OBJECTVE
Objective of the site visit: Understand the basics of the construction process. Improve the understanding of the theories and applications from the practical

construction works. Exposure to actual working environment on site. Improve the ability to communicate with the construction team and explore the

importance of teamwork. Explore and identify various types of building materials and technology on site. Awareness of the importance of safety on site. Recognize the item measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works. Adopt a systematic approach to take-off quantities from drawings for the preparation of

Bills of Quantities for substructure and reinforced concrete frame works. Demonstrate a systematic and orderly mind and be able to visualize the drawings and

details given for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

TECHNICAL OBSERVATIONS
On the 21st June 2013, Ms. Ang, lecturer of our Measurement 1, brought us to a construction site near Subang Jaya. We reached the site around 9am morning as the site will be hot during afternoon depends on the weather. We were asked to wear the safety helmet before we enter the construction site as the contractor requested for our own safety. The first thing after we entered into the construction site, we were asked to gather in front of the temporary office in the site to have a short briefing about the safety precautions. Mr. Peter, who was giving us the briefing about safety, told us that we are supposed to wear safety boots in the construction site as we might step on something sharp or dangerous or to protect our foot in case if anything drop down and hit our foot. However, we still able to visit the site without a proper safety boots but we were asked to be careful with every steps when we walk in the site. Besides, we were also asked not to stand below the construction works. And still, the safety helmet is a must in the construction site in order to protect ourselves. After the briefing, we guided by the contractor slowly go through every process in the construction site. He showed us the bar bending yard, we witnessed the bar bending process and also the process of cutting the bars. There are a lot of different bars with different bends were been processed on site for columns and beams before it been installed. There are also carpenter yard for the timber works like formworks for the concrete. We also saw the spacer for the reinforcement bars and the process of making it. About the reinforced concrete pile, the contractor told us that it is 300mm Gr. 45 and the standard length is 12m, but they have 9m, 6m and 3m as well. For the lighter loading, the pile is reduced to 200mm . The piles are all precast and the rest are cast in situ. The cost is lower if precast pile is used. The size of the column is

700mm . For the beams, the deepest beam is 1750mm with 650mm width. The size of the land is the merge of 2 lots and its around 5 acres. The highest floor difference is 11m, the rest will be around 9m. The project is owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, TNB. It was designed by SoonChai Architect. TNB then hired the contractor from KP Synergies Berhad to construct the works. The project started on 18th October 2010 and will be completed around 14th October 2014. It is the first power station for the transformer, which also known as Pencawang Masuk Utama. There will be consisting of total 5 transformers. Each of the transformers has 87,000 litres of transformer oil and the range is from 90mv to 240mv. The depth of transformer is about 1.5m. Total cost of this project is around RM 130 million.

CONCLUSION
As the first time of visiting to the construction site, I felt exciting and interesting before the visit. After the site visit, I felt that it was an awesome experience although the hot sun is torturing us. I have learned the importance of wearing a safety helmet and boots in a construction site. After I witnessed the practical process of bending a bar, I realized the process actually required a lot of preparing works like tighten the bars in the bar bending machine and also measuring for final check before bend. For cutting the reinforcement bars, it is much easier and faster than the bending process as bending machine allows one bar once while cutting machine can afford for two; and the process of cutting a bar is just placing the bar in the provided space and it will cut it in a second. Besides, I have learned to communicate with the construction team and understood how important the teamwork is. Moreover, I have learned to recognize some of the materials as some materials I could not imagine during the lecture and caused some confuse in my studies. Lastly, I really appreciated the opportunity of this site visit as I really learned a lot of things in it which I could never learn it from books. I would like to thank our lecturer, Ms. Ang and also the construction team at the site who were patiently lead us and taught us the knowledge that are important to us for our future as to be a qualified quantity surveyor.
