A
t one of the frst meet-
ings to introduce the
proposal of a joint health
care facility for Minnedosa
and Neepawa, it was stated
that while Minnedosa had
a full slate of physicians at
the time, a shortage would
be coming in the next
few years. Tat statement
has become a reality and
Minnedosa has now joined
many other communities
in the province facing a
shortage in medical physi-
cians.
Earlier this year,
Minnedosa lost Drs. Roche
and Bishay, leaving Drs.
Khandelwal, Onyshko,
Hussain and Sulaiman to
pick up the extra workload.
Last Tuesday, July 2nd, our
community welcomed Dr.
Lysack to f ll one of the
physician vacancies; how-
ever, after only one day in
practice with Minnedosa
Medical Group, she deter-
mined this posting was not
in her best interests and
moved on.
Adding to the lo-
cal shortage is the recent
verbal notice Prairie
Mountain Health has re-
ceived from Dr. Sulaiman
that she will be ending her
practice in Minnedosa at
the end of August. She has
also chosen to no longer
participate in emergency
room on-call at the hospi-
tal efective immediately.
Tese recent change
of events has really left us
with a huge loss, stated
Michelle McKay, Director,
Medical Services Admin-
istration for Prairie Moun-
tain Health. It essentially
means that we have three
physicians currently par-
ticipating in Emergency
Room on call hospital work
and four providing prima-
ry care services which will
reduce to three as of Sep-
tember 1st. It is a very dif-
fcult situation and it does
provide a huge amount of
workload for the remain-
ing physicians.
With these recent
changes, the fear of a tem-
porary Emergency Room
closure for Minnedosa
becomes a very real and
frightening possibility. ER
closures have already be-
come a reality for many ru-
ral communities and just
last week, the community
of Killarney experienced
its ER being closed due to
the resignation of two of its
physicians.
To address the phy-
sician shortages in
Minnedosa, Prairie Moun-
tain Health will be hold-
ing a meeting with com-
munity leaders and local
physicians. We have to
determine what plans can
be put in place to assist
the physicians during this
time, said Michelle. We
will be working with com-
munities and providers to
determine what services
can be maintained and
where we may need to look
at possible changes in the
short term.
We are obviously in a
pretty dire situation here,
mentioned Minnedosa
Mayor, Ray Orr. We have
been in constant touch
with the RHA and I believe
they are doing the best that
they can do under the cir-
cumstances. I think one
of the ways we can help is
to get our facilities up to
date.

One of the things that weve been looking at,
with some encouragement from the RHA and our
own doctors, is perhaps building a new medical
clinic, indicated Mayor Orr.
As for recruitment for new physicians, this pro-
cess continues throughout the health authority.
Much of Manitoba is dependent on international
medical graduates and RHAs are only able to re-
cruit those individuals when they become available
to them. For Prairie Mountain, that occurs once per
year in February.
Tere are really no additional resources avail-
able until February at the earliest, said Michelle.
Even then, we have only three physicians who will
become available for all of Prairie Mountain Health.
Minnedosa would be a fairly signifcant priority for
new physician placement but we have a signifcant
shortage in terms of what our needs are throughout
Prairie Mountain.
Te current situation in Minnedosa strengthens
the fact that physicians today are looking to practice
in larger, modern centres with bigger challenges
than one small rural community may ofer. Tis
helps support the proposal of a joint health care fa-
cility for Minnedosa, Neepawa and area.
Maybe this is an indication of the direction that
small, rural centres are going to end up going if we
dont get our facilities up to date, stated Mayor Orr.
Te joint health care facility remains a top priority
for the RHA and it will continue to encourage the
provincial government that this is something that is
needed to provide quality health care services to ru-
ral residents in our area.
Tis reinforces the need that rural Manitoba
is always extremely vulnerable with the amount of
health care providers we have, not only physicians
but also nursing staf, lab and x-ray and all of those
areas that are required to operate an acute care fa-
cility, explained Michelle. A joint hospital does not
illuminate this problem but certainly is expected to
reduce it. Tis makes a stronger case for the need.
However, you need providers on board to move
things like this forward and right now Minnedosa is
really lacking that leadership at the medical level.
Prairie Mountain Health plans to set up a meet-
ing with community leaders and physicians within
the next couple of weeks to determine the best way
to address the physician shortage while striving to
provide reliable, quality health care services for
Minnedosa and area residents.

nn Grasby won silver
at the April provincial
spring games this year.
Seven athletes, includ-
ing Cameron Schmidt,
Wes Couto, Orville Cool-
ey, Devrin Fondal, Corey
Bouchard, and Cam Farr
went to the provincial
games to compete in the
5-pin bowling category.
Each player played well
throughout the competi-
tion, but Grasby was able
to snag second place in her
category.
Te players are divid-
ed into categories depend-
ing on their handicap.
Tis method is designed
to place everyone on the
same playing feld. Tere
were approximately 150
bowlers that attended the
provincial games. Anns
scores ranged from 135 to
130 and 162, fnishing the
day with 52 points over her
average.
Ann will not be alone
as she ventures to Van-
couver next year. Two
others from the Neepawa
area have also chosen to
compete in the Summer
Games. Trudy Adamson
was given the position of
Assistant Coach for Team
Westman. She will also be
accompanying the team
as they head to the 2014
Special Olympic Games.
Most of the costs for the
trip to Vancouver is paid
for by the Special Olym-
pics Committee. Ann had
to come up with $125 out
of the $1,500 per athlete.
In the future, Trudy and
Ann plan to do some fund-
raising to help cover these
costs.
Every time you go
there, you are lined up into
your teams and then called
out to carry the fags into
the crowd. It is enough to
make you feel like you are a
celebrity, Trudy described
after her journey there
once before. Tere will be
fve days of solid competi-
tion for the competitors.
All of the athletes from this
region had to commit to
three practices a week, in-
cluding two nights of bowl-
ing and a night of yoga, un-
til the games next summer.
Brock Johnson and
Andrew Dinsdale are also
becoming local celebri-
ties after winning silver
and bronze respectively in
this years provincial Sum-
mer Games. It is safe to say
that Westman has done ex-
tremely well this year.
As for right now, Trudy
is also going to start a golf
program located out of
Minnedosa.

T
he Honourary Parade
Marshal for the 2013
Fun Fest Parade was an-
nounced as Ruth Delmage.
Ruth is a woman many of
you may know through
the various groups she is
involved in and the events
she has helped to orga-
nize. Ruth Delmage will
be the Honourary Marshal
for the Funfest Parade this
year, commented Beth
McNabb on behalf of the
Minnedosa Chamber of
Commerce. It is a position
that recognizes a persons
contributions to the com-
munity. She will be riding
at the front of the parade
in a Classic Ford Convert-
ible, driven by Monica and
Leonard Curle.
I know my husband
did it a few diferent times,
so I thought I should try it
as well. I have taken part
in the parade every year
for quite a few years. Last
year, I was on the Legion
foat but now I get to be
at the very start! Ruth ex-
claimed.
Ruth came to Canada
in May of 1946 with her
19 month old son in tow.
She rode on Te Aquitania,
from England across the
Atlantic Ocean to Halifax.
From Halifax, she was to
take the train to Winnipeg
and meet her husband at
the train station. However,
when she got there he was
nowhere in sight. After
waiting in Winnipeg until
11:00 p.m., she was fnally
able to get to Minnedosa.
Ten someone told us
that my husband had ar-
rived. He was in civvies,
with a fedora and a pin-
striped suit. He looked like
a gangster! Ruth remi-
nisced.
After her arrival in
Minnedosa, Ruth was ac-
tively involved in many
dif erent associations,
such as the Manitoba War
Brides Association, 4-H
Club, Legion Ladies Auxil-
iary, Canadian Army Mili-
tia, Rife Junior Club, East-
ern Star, as well as the 18th
Armoured Car Auxiliary
to the 12th Manitoba Dra-
goons. Nevertheless, she
still fnds time to serve tea
for Grandmas in the com-
munity, take school kids
and church goers out for
picnics, and read In Flan-
ders Fields on Remem-
brance Day.
Ruth has also been in-
volved in Fun Fest from the
time when it was still called
the Farmers Festival.
She organized the Credit
Union Float, sold tickets,
and organized a wine and
cheese event. Being asked
to become the Parade Mar-
shal for this years Fun Fest
Parade is just a small way
for the community to show
their recognition and ap-
preciation for all Ruth has
done for our town.

Ruth Delmage -
Honourary Parade Marshal
Longtime community volunteer, Ruth Delmage
will be riding in style during Saturdays
Fun Fest Parade. Ruth has been chosen as
this years Honourary Parade Marshal.

E
ach summer, Minnedosa has a few action-packed
weekends of celebration. Te f rst was the recent
Canada Day long weekend, this coming weekend is
the second with Fun Fest and the Fair and the third
will be the August long weekend when Rockin the
Fields and the Rodeo return.
Every one of these popular attractions have ex-
perienced their own unique struggles along the way
but their longevity is a direct result of dedicated vol-
unteers who give their time to ensure our community
has such summer attractions, not only for locals but
also for visitors who travel to Minnedosa to take in the
festivities. While here, they hopefully take in other ac-
tivities and attractions our community has to ofer, as
well as spending a few dollars in our business district.
Tese events are prime examples of the impor-
tance of volunteers within a community. None of
the organizers for these events get paid any fnancial
reward, their payment is simply being involved with
something they love as well as the satisfaction of doing
something for their community for others to take part
in and enjoy. Everyone involved with these attractions
deserve a huge round of applause.
As with anything else, there is always room for
more people to get involved to help out. Without the
dedication and hard work of volunteers our commu-
nity would not have a Canada Day celebration, the
many Fun Fest activities, a summer fair, a rock festi-
val or a rodeo. Tese enjoyable attractions dont just
happen it takes people to make them happen; from
the months of planning and organizing, to the clean
up and tear down following the event, hundreds and
sometimes thousands of volunteer hours are spent.
While there are always many positive comments
about the festivities taking place during these sum-
mer events, from time to time there are some who
voice their opinions that the quality and quantity of
activities is lacking. Some of these concerns may ring
true but like anything else, with only small groups of
people volunteering to help out, only so much can be
done. I think each of these events ofer a great amount
of variety for participants. Tey are all working with
very limited budgets and small, but dedicated pools of
organizers and volunteer workers. Overall, a great job
is done by all to pull of these successful events.
As we approach another Fun Fest and Fair week-
end, I encourage you all to get out there and take in
some of the many attractions these events have to of-
fer. You will fnd something for all ages.
Did You Know?
Tis year marks the 50th anniversary of Fun Fest.
Te f rst was a fve day extravaganza held in July 1963
and was known as the Manitoba Farmers Festival.
Meanwhile, our fair is celebrating its 130th anni-
versary this summer. While the local Ag Society was
formed in 1882, the frst fair is reported to have been
held in 1883. Happy anniversary to both!

ada has only ever gotten
5th place. We can now tell
everyone that we went
down there and did it,
and we almost pulled it
off, but it just wasnt there
for us, Galbraith said.
The team did not go
without challenges to
face either. I had a blood
infection that put me in
the hospital for ten days.
After I got out and came
back to Manitoba, I got
sick again and had only
a week and a half to get
back into the shape I was.
I just wanted to get back
on the field and show the
guys that I was still able to
compete, Galbraith com-
mented
Roche will be tak-
ing some time off after
an exhausting year. He
is now looking towards
University of British Co-
lumbia and will be play-
ing rugby there in the
upcoming fall. Glabraith
will be going to University
of Manitoba and is taking
a few years off to get his
diploma and work on his
degree.
It was pretty cool
that we were like celeb-
rities. Honestly the best
part was getting that sil-
ver medal in front of that
crowd. It was great to be
there with Tom and it was
pretty cool that the two of
us from Minnedosa were
able to go, Galbraith
commented.
The scores for the
event were: Canada 24-6
Tonga, Canada 39-15 Ja-
pan, Canada 36-15 Uru-
guay and Canada 23-42
Italy.

perks!
Tough interrupted
by hecklers, and lots of
laughter, all enjoyed Marc

Birthday Marc!) Class
Valedictorian, Brian Nich-

speech from Grad and
shared it once again; this
time with more laughter
and the occasional mos-
quito slap.
Many stories were
shared, some of which we
had forgotten, and some
we wish we could forget.
Even though some had
not seen each other since
school days, all agreed
how easy it was to talk

K
eira Dragan has re-
turned to Minnedosa
after spending a year par-
ticipating in Te World
Race. Trying to summarize
her experiences is a little
like trying to explain how
a spacecraft operates in
one sentence, because for
Keira, this wasnt just a trip
that can be summarized in
one sentence. It was life-
changing.
Te World Race is a
Christian Mission trip that
lasts 11 months and visits
11 diferent countries. It is a
challenge for young adults
to abandon what they know
in search of a diferent per-
spective and to help those
in need.
After arriving for a
launch in Washington
DC, she was assigned to G
squad. A group made up
of 54 people that were also
participating in the Race.
She was then told to go to
Central America, followed
by Europe, Asia and Africa.
Te countries within these
continents included Hon-
duras, Guatemala, Nicara-
gua, Costa Rica, Romania,
Moldova, Tailand, Ma-
laysia, Cambodia, Uganda,
Rwanda, and Kenya.
We had to do a lot of
manual labor, which is not
my favourite thing! It was
really challenging actu-
ally, after day one, you just
wanted to fare up and say
I dont want to do this any-
more, Im hot and tired! But
then you realize that you
are here to serve the peo-
ple, Keira explained. She
was also able to braid girls
hair, teach math and Eng-
lish to students, and give
door-to-door Ministry. In
some places, the Minister
in charge would let them
decide where their time
would be best spent.
Every second month
they would all have a few
days of to debrief and ev-
ery third month the teams
would be switched around
so that you would be able
to meet new people. My
frst team meshed so well
that we were able to do ex-
actly what we were called
there to do. After Costa Rica
I got three new teammates
and stayed with three of my
original team mates. Noth-
ing was ever the same after
that. But I learned a lot be-
cause I saw what it was like
to be on a healthy team and
one where we had to fght
for unity.
Troughout the com-
petition, the racers also
worked through many
emotional struggles. Te
hardest three months I
went through were in Eu-
rope. I discovered so much
about me and my relation-
ship to the Lord. However,
it was hard for my team-
mates because they were
so used to seeing fun and
joyful Keira, it was a change
to see serious and solemn
Keira.
One of the biggest
lessons I learned is to fght
everyday to know that what
I have is a luxury. It isnt
bad to have things, but it is
bad to ignore that you are
blessed and to ignore that
you are in the top percen-
tile of people.
I was able to discover
that out of all of their noth-
ingness, they gave us ev-
erything. Te people that
we saw of ered us their
best, even when they really
couldnt aford it. To sum-
marize some of the com-
mon questions that are
asked Keira told us that her
favourite month was Nica-
ragua while her favourite
country was Cambodia.
Te most impacting month
was in Cambodia, and the
worst month was Moldova.
I found that living with
so many people was very
hard as well. You always
saw someone out the cor-
ner of your eye, and the
only time you were alone
was when you were in the
bathroom. It was the worst
thing, but honestly, it was
also the best thing.
Keira f nished her
presentation by saying,
Whats next is right now,
right here. It is being in
Minnedosa because it is
where I am supposed to
be. Ten in January I am
going to Georgia for a year
to do an internship with
CGA (Center of Global Ac-
tion), an organization that
also sponsors the World
Race.
In other news, Robyn
Dragan, Keiras sister, is
also preparing to go on
the World Race. She is now
busy raising $15, 000 in or-
der to sponsor her travels
and the activities she will
do.

year that they have been
present and active in Clan-
william. Te event was
a success with hundreds
focking to Clanwilliam to
participate in the festivi-
ties.
Te afternoon started
at 2:00 p.m. and was fo-
cused on carnival games
and hayrides. Some of
the games included the
boot toss, hole-in-one,
frisknock, lawn curling,
and face painting. Tere
was also a large assort-
ment of prizes up for
grabs, from an iPad mini
to a weekend in Elkhorn.
In addition to the games
and prizes, Clanwilliam
also held a best pie contest
with a whopping total of 42
entries. Locals competed
against one another to de-
termine who had the best
pie in Clanwilliam.
After the carnival
games ended, there was a
baseball game, followed by
a tug of war tournament in
which Te Minnedosa Val-
ley Cruizers also came out
to show Clanwilliam their
support. Many were seen
mingling between the vari-
ous cars and admiring the
engines.
Clanwilliam also
closed of an entire street
for the night due to the
Street Dance that took
place. Te entertainment
was provided by Smith and
Wesson, as well as Te Bad
Marleys. Even a short bout
of heavy rain could not put
a damper on the festivities
as some used the espe-
cially wet grass as a slip n

Boots 4-H Rodeo
Club held their year end
achievement at Rapid City
Rodeo Grounds on Sun-
day June 16th when 15
members had their riding
skills evaluated by Jolie
Bootsman. A BBQ lunch
was served to 60 mem-
bers, friends and family
and then awards and cer-
tifcates were presented to
members. An afternoon of
fun games were planned,
but unfortunately the
weather didnt cooperate
so we had to stop after the
egg stomp and the juice
box race .
Despite being the
youngest 4-H club in Man-
itoba we have been very
busy at all levels over the
4-H year and have partici-
pated in many diferent ac-
tivities. We have been carol
singing and raised money
and food for the local food
bank; we participated in
Rivers Christmas parade
with our horses; we went
for a sleigh ride followed
by skating in Brandon
and our Christmas party
took place at Ski Valley,
Minnedosa where we skied
and snowboarded. We also
went to Fun Time Pottery
in Brandon and painted
4-H memorabilia mugs
and plates to celebrate 100
years of 4-H
March saw the begin-
ning of club speeches in
which everyone participat-
ed the highlight of com-
munications was that three
of our members Sara
Hunter, Lauren McKee
and Charlee MacLaughlin-
Ventnor went all the way
through to compete at Pro-
vincial Communications
in Portage.
To help with our fund-
raising we assisted at vari-
ous events which included
manning the 4-H stand at
the Winter Fair, working
the doors at Horse 3, sell-
ing 50/50 tickets at Rapid
City Rodeo and catering
for a barrel clinic.
Due to the late thaw
it was awhile before we
could start riding our hors-
es, but at the beginning of
May we started ride nights
with Tara Hofer coming to
teach our members good
horsemanship skills we
have learned a lot and
everyones riding has im-
proved greatly.
In mid May our club
hosted a very successful
Area Rally, known as South
Parkland Fun and Recog-
nition Day. Forty-three
members from 13 clubs
in the area took part in a
full day of events which
included equine and beef
clinics, a ceramic work-
shop, cookie decorating,
judging , and an Amazing
Race in and around Rapid
City. A number of senior
members also took part in
interviews for three bursa-
ries and three gold watch
awards throughout the
afternoon and one of our
members, Katie Hunter,
was successful in receiv-
ing a bursary. Te day cul-
minated in a 100 year quiz
and a supper was served to
95 members and family.
Another highlight of
our year was participat-
ing in a national 4-H video
contest sponsored by the
FCC. We submitted a video
about what farming meant
to us and then had to get
votes we placed second
overall in Manitoba which
meant winning $750 as a
result of this our members
agreed they would all like a
buckle each to commemo-
rate our club and 100 years
of 4-H.
Although we have
achieved, we plan to keep
riding through the sum-
mer as much as possible
and a number of our mem-
bers will be attending the
4-H Fun Fest event in Car-
man in July.

We extend happy an-

OBITUARIES
Donald Norman Taylor
March , - June ,
Donald Norman Taylor of
Minnedosa passed away
peacefully June 21, 2013 at
Minnedos a Hospital at the age
of 73 years.
Don was born in Minnedosa
Manitoba on March 31, 1940.
He spent his early years at
Riverdale on the family farm
with his eight siblings. As a young
man he had many jobs related to
farming but followed his interest of
mechanics which led him to working
at Stephenson Motors and later Jim Brown Implements in
Minnedosa. After receiving his mechanics licence at Red River
College, Don went to work in places such as Kettle Rapids,
Tompson, Hay River and eventually the Beaufort Sea where
he helped build the frst manmade island for an oil company.
Don, his wife Brenda and three small children moved back
to the area and settled on their family farm in the McBride
District. Tey had one more child and Don spent the next 25
years following his true passion as a farmer and continuing his
mechanics in his own shop.
Don spent many years as a 4-H leader working with young
kids in the community and their horses. He spoke often of the
memories of the exceptional kids he had the privilege of working
with. Don and Brenda moved to Minnedosa in 1997 where they
started a daycare. Many kids remember him as Grandpa Don,
who joked with them and created relationships that lasted well
beyond their daycare years.
Don was predeceased by his parents Bert and Ruby Taylor,
brother Keith and sister Joyce.
Don will be fondly remembered by his wife of 48 years
Brenda, his children Sherri (Ken) Sharpe, Sandy Taylor, Cathy
(Darren) Woychyshyn, Stacey (Ron) Cook. He will be missed
incredibly by his eight grandchildren Brett (Nadine), Jacey,
Katie, Jake, Josh, Ryan (Emily), Tyler and Amanda, and three
great grandchildren Ainsely, Lucas and Bryson.
Also surviving are one brother and fve sisters.
Funeral services were held on Tursday June 27th, 2013

Katherine McFaddin
August , December ,
Surrounded by the love of her family, Katherine McFaddin
passed away peacefully at the Minnedosa Personal Care Home
on December 13, 2012, at the age of 93 years.
Lovingly remembered by her children, Sandra (Richard)
Clark, Robert (Eneida) Reichert, James (Janice) Reichert.
Grandchildren, Colleen (Brian) Evenson, Karen Clark,
Marla (Andrew) Archbold, Scott McCord (Crystal). Great
grandchildren, Erin (Adam) Woodcock, Kathleen (Justin)
Hopkins, Victoria Evenson, Eiddwen Archbold. Great-great
grandchildren, Ava & Olivia Woodcock. Sisters, Mary (Lex)
Duncan, Elma Klaassen, and their families, also many cousins,
nieces & nephews. Her extended family, Neil (Lorna) McFaddin,
Diana (Skip) Wright, Phil McFaddin, and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Katherine
Giesbrecht, frst husband, Robert Reichert, second husband,
Donald McFaddin, sisters Helen Dyck, and Susan Cyr, two
sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law.
Mom was born August 26, 1919 in southern Manitoba.
In May,1938 she married Robert Reichert of Plum Coulee,
and they raised their family there. She was a member of the
Womens Institute, and a 4-H leader for many years. After Dad
retired from the post of ce in 1973 they moved to Winnipeg,
then to Minnedosa in 1975, where Dad passed away in 1981.
Mom married Don McFaddin in 1989, and they enjoyed many
happy years together, until Don passed away in 2005. When her
health declined Mom resided in the Legion Apts., and fnally at
the Minnedosa care home until the time of her death.
Mom was kind, gentle, non-judgemental, a good listener, with
a generous and caring nature. She loved music and dancing,
and was always ready for a game of scrabble, cards, or bocci.
She was happiest when surrounded by her family, and we were
fortunate to have her in our lives for so many years. We miss her
dearly, but take comfort in knowing she is at peace.
A private family interment will take place on July 20th, 2013,
followed by a memorial service for friends and family at 2:00
pm at the Minnedosa United Church Hall.
