Medicine at Monash University

Our Faculty is unique among its Australian counterparts. We provide an education that takes intellectual, social and ethical development beyond theory, into clinical and research settings, and out into the broader community. Although Monash University is barely 50 years old, the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences is ranked at 33 in the Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health Universities category of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In 2013 the authoritative QS rankings placed our Medicine program at 29 worldwide, and our Psychology and Pharmacology programs are ranked at number 27 and 7 respectively. Monash is also the only Australian university represented within the prestigious M8 Alliance of academic health centres and medical universities. This elite grouping includes Johns Hopkins University in the United States, Imperial College London, the Sorbonne in Paris the Charit in Berlin and Universit de Montral amongst others. And we are highly prominent at the pre-eminent global forum for global health, the annual World Health Summit in Berlin that sets the future direction for health care policy and public health. Monash University offers a five year, direct entry, undergraduate medical course compared with the minimum of seven years for an accelerated program in Canada. This course is only offered to students that have not undertaken any university study. Applicants with a Bachelors degree in any field degree are eligible to apply for our graduate entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The graduate entry MBBS is a four year course delivered at the Gippsland Medical School.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

The curriculum is designed as an integrated program incorporating four themes, within which semester-long units are taught by staff from a range of departments across the Faculty, in an interdisciplinary fashion. During the early years of the course, the basic medical and behavioural sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology) are introduced within interdisciplinary units. In all of these units there is a major focus on clinical issues through clinical case studies. Students participate in community-based practice placements where they spend time working in community settings with clients of welfare agencies. In the first clinical year, students study integrated medicine and surgery, conducted in a full-time hospital setting in conjunction with a series of problembased and case-based learning sessions led by experienced clinicians.

The next year is largely comprised of core clinical rotations in Womens and Childrens Health, General Practice and Medicine of the Mind (psychiatry) which is delivered as a hospital or community-based medical education program. The final year of the course is structured as a series of clinical rotations, where students gain hands-on experience in a variety of disciplines and specific areas of interest in a range of metropolitan, rural and overseas settings.
