VOICE LESSON SYLLABUS New World School of the Arts

Linda Considine Assistant Professor of Voice/Diction Room 4104 (305) 237 3842 Studio (305) 905 2017 Cell lconsidi@mdc.edu COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will be trained in the classical style of singing. Goals for the course will include development of technical proficiency, growth in artistic interpretation, and building of repertoire in art song and aria from the baroque period to the present. Additionally, students will be coached in foreign language diction and the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). GOOD HEALTH AND SINGING: The student MUST notify the instructor IN ADVANCE if he/she is unable to attend a scheduled lesson for whatever reason. A failing grade will be given for each unexcused absence. Lessons canceled less than 24 hours in advance will not be rescheduled. Students who cancel their lessons must notify the accompanist. Lessons missed due to illness will be excused only when documented by a letter from a physician. Students who do not get enough sleep, who eat improperly, smoke or otherwise abuse their vocal health prior to a lesson should not expect a passing grade for that lesson. LESSON ATTENDANCE, PRACTICE AND ACCOMPANIST REQUIREMENTS: 1. Lessons must be scheduled during the first three days of classes. Each student must attend 15 lessons per semester beginning Tuesday after Labor Day. If lesson times are changed or swapped, the student must make arrangements with both teacher and accompanist. 2. Please arrive at your lesson warmed-up and ready to sing. If you are more than 15 minutes late, the lesson will be forfeited and a failing grade assigned. 3. Students are expected to be present with two copies of their assigned repertoire at each lesson, and to practice all assigned exercises and repertoire FOR A MINIMUM OF ONE HOUR DAILY. 4. Each student must arrange a coaching time with an assigned accompanist and must sing any repertoire for any public performance or juries with that accompanist at a lesson prior to that performance. Failure to do so will adversely affect the studio grade. 5. It is not my responsibility to teach you the music. Coaching is provided to help you. You are also expected to listen to recordings of professional singers. 6. Students are encouraged to bring recording devices to lessons. Please have a pencil ready to notate corrections and IPA transcriptions. 7. Students who must be absent from lessons because of religious holidays should notify the instructor well in advance.

EVALUATION: 1. A grade will be assigned for each lesson. All unexcused missed lessons will receive a failing grade. Students will be responsible for rescheduling lessons with excused absence. 2. To receive a grade of A in this studio, a student must demonstrate consistent and exceptional preparation and performance. 3. Jury performance will count as 25% of the final studio grade. Musical mistakes, poor diction, and memory slips will be reflected in the jury grade. Students must view the jury as a final exam and be prepared accordingly. Dress as you would for an audition. Ladies: no short skirts.

75% of the final grade will be based on attendance, attitude and preparation for 15 lessons, and consistent progress in vocal technique. 25% of the final grade will be the results of the jury at the end of the semester.
