One set of talks (Talk Nos 114 & 116) are an outline of what happened, and The second lot of talks (Talk Nos 117 to 119) is a description of the reaction of the Muslim world or the Muslim Populace to the changes or the social tribulations that were taking place right throughout this history. 3. The main objective of these talks (and therefore the scripts of these talks), is to stimulate thinking. Sensible, rational and logical thinking. So, my message, think, think & think! Be sensible, be rational and be logical.

The Quran is in Arabic. A large percentage of us Muslims in Sri Lanka cannot understand Arabic; However, most of us can read or recite the Aayaths in Arabic. So then we could ask the question, How do we understand what the Quran instructs us? The answer is that we dont. It is really an unusual set up. We take a lot of trouble to teach our children to recite the Quran with proper Tajweed and Qiraath. There are also a fair number of our youth who have memorized the entire Quran and they recite it beautifully. But then many of these Huffaaz cannot understand Arabic. All of us have memorized a few small Surahs from the Quran which we use to recite in our daily prayers. Some of us have memorized a few of the larger Surahs like Surah Yaseen, Surah Mulk, Surah ALM Sajdha, Surah Waqia and so on. But then we just do not know or cannot understand what those Aayaths mean or even instruct. Is this not very very unusual? Let me read to you a few Aayaths form the Quran that instruct us about the Arabic language, the language of the Quran. S Yusuf

(12:2) We have sent it down, as an Arabic Quran, so that you may use your AQL.

The instruction, we have sent a Quran in Arabic so that you would use your AQL (Usually translated as intelligence) Does this not indicate that the operating system of our Aql is in Arabic? Let me read to you another Aayath. (2:44) Do you enjoin righteousness upon others while you ignore your own selves, although you keep reciting the Book?

Afalaa ThaghQiloon? (Do you not use your AQL?)

S Al Anbiya (21:10) Surely, We have sent down to you a book having a good counsel for you. Afalaa ThaghQiloon? (Do you not use your AQL?) S Al Furqaan

(25:44) Or do you think that most of them listen or use their AQL?

They are but like cattle.

Rather, they are even farther astray from the (right) way.

S Muhammad (47:24) Then, do they not give serious thought to the Qurn, or do they have locks on their hearts? S Al Qamar (54:40) Indeed We have made the Qurn easy for seeking advice. So, is there one to heed to the advice? S Jummah (62:5) The example of those who were ordered to bear (the responsibility of acting upon) the Torah, then they did not bear it, is like a donkey that carries a load of books. Evil is the example of those who have rejected Allahs verses. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

We read the Quran, we listen to the Quran being recited. We are very particular about the Tajweed and selective about the Qari. But then we do not understand the Quran. 2

Why? Because, we cannot understand Arabic. Are we not like the donkey carrying a load of books? Is it not time tht we made attempts to learn this wonderful language. Isnt Quran the language of the AQL? Remember;

(12:2) We have sent it down, as an Arabic Quran, so that you may use your AQL.

1. I have had the great privilege, (since Aug 2010), of presenting talks on the weekly Radio Program Culture of Islam [Friday 5.30 to 6.00 am, Radio Sri Lanka - FM 97.4] 2. Since these are Radio Talks, I refer to, or address the audience as listeners 3. I am well aware that the audience to these talks would consist of people belonging to a variety of faiths. So as to make people of all faiths feel included, I very often use words and names that are common to all religions. 4. For these reasons, I use the name GOD, as well as Abraham, Moses, Jesus etc as well as the names Allah, Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), Moosa (Alaihis Salaam), Easa (Alaihis Salaam) etc 5. Muslims by habit usually say Sallallahu Alaihiwasallam, when the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned, and Alaihis Salaam' when the name of a Prophet is mentioned. However, in these series of talks I have reduced the use of these prayers & sayings to the bare minimum. 6. Muslims, also by habit, use a number of Arabic prayers or sayings, such as Alhamdulillah, Insha Allah and so on. Again, I have reduced the use of these prayers or sayings to the bare minimum. 7. Sometimes I have to write Arabic words in the English script. I have devised my own way of writing Arabic in English, as follows;
