One Hour Test (OHT)-2/Fall-2012 P-01: GSM Architecture and Implementation

Good Luck (20 minutes) [6+4=10 Points]

[a] We have discussed GSM signal processing in detail. Explain the initial three steps including GSM speech encoder, channel encoder and interleaving steps. (Do make use of diagrams.)

[c] Consider an FH-SS system using 50 kHz channels over a continuous 20 MHz spectrum. It is using fast frequency hopping with two hops for each bit. If the system deploys binary FSK as modulation method, determine the following; - the number of hops per second if each user transmits at 25 kbps. - the probability of error for a single user operating at an Eb/No = 20 dB. - the probability of error for a user operating at Eb/No = 20 dB with 20 other FH-SS users which are independently frequency hopped.

[b] A centralized network providing a maximum of 10 Mbps and services to a large set of user terminals with pure ALOHA protocol. 1) What is the maximum throughput for network? 2) What is the offered traffic in the medium and how is it composed?

Solution: 1) Smax = 18% Network throughput = 0.18 X 10 = 1.8 Mbps 2) At S = Smax, G = 0.5, Offered load = 0.5 X 10 = 5 Mbps i.e. 1.8 Mbps of delivered packets + 3.2 Mbps of collided packets
