PICTURES OF ENGLISH TENSES FOR YOUNG LEARNERS Using PICTURES OF ENGLISH TENSES FOR YOUNG LEARNERS
Photocopy Side A of the page to provide oral practice in the target structure, and Side B to provide written follow up. The Teaching Notes on the following pages give you prompt questions to generate the correct structure for each tense, and also example conversations and answers. Pictures of English Tenses for Young Learners concentrates on providing practice in the selection and use of 5 principle tenses. Each of these 5 tenses is consistently linked with a colour. Present Simple (Dark Blue) & Present Continuous (Light Blue). Past Simple (Brown) ... Autumn leaves ? Burnt Toast? Present Perfect (Green) like a peppermint the taste stays after the sweet has gone ... Future (Yellow) a nice bright sunny future for everyone! Use these colours consistently so students quickly become familiar with them. The names of the characters in the picture drills, reinforce this association. Students now have a right hemisphere, colour based, visual system for identifying tenses.
It is easy to make a colour choice between, say, Present Simple and Present Continuous. Is it Dark Blue or Light Blue? The teacher can correct by simply holding up the appropriate coloured pen and the colour prompts the student into self correction.
TEACHING NOTES A
Coloured pens/pencils for students to pass around to do their own colour coding will be very useful.

Young Learners
For ages 714. 20 units with pictures for oral practice, and written follow-up exercises for consolidation. Similar in format to the successful Pictures of English Tenses with more examples of grammar for elementary learners at Council of Europe language level CEF-A1. Uses a brilliantly simple colour coding system to differentiate between the tenses. Has clear illustrations giving lots of class / pair practice.
Each lesson has a Brain-friendly rationale, using the logical left brain hemisphere and the more intuitive, creative right hemisphere to learn and practise the target language. Very simply: i) there is a logic and a purpose in each activity which appeals to the left hemisphere. ii) we use lots of visuals and pattern work to engage the right hemisphere. iii) activity opportunities keep the reex brain alert. iv) memory and emotion are linked to language by the limbic system through visualising and role play. v) there are opportunities for the new brain to take target language and use it creatively in new situations. vi) language is presented using different learning styles and worked on by the ear (auditory), the eye (visual) and with movement (kinesthetically).
