Field Experience Volunteering my time at the Humane Society of North Texas was absolutely life changing and a great

experience. I am not going to stop here but continue doing a good deed and volunteer there during my free time. I now have something else to look forward to in life and that is getting some time with animals that just want love and your short time of attention and care. 1. I learned more about animals in the shelters and their individual back story of where they came from and their past experience. Working with the animals is a lot of hard work caring for another feeding, walking, bathing and cleaning after them. They are selfless, wanting your love and attention for the few minutes you have with them. There is a lot more work to care for another person or animal than I first thought. You have to look after them, be flexible to their schedule and gain their trust. It is just like a student in a classroom setting. When they first meet their teacher, they dont know who the person is. They have to slowly warm up to him/her and get to know them for who they are along with the other students in the class. The student is usually shy at first and not sure of their environment, though after a few days you become one of their best friends. 2. I learned this on my very first day of volunteering. There was a dog named Pixie; she was a miniature chiwawa mix that would bite when she was nervous. The dogs are walked every couple of hours and it was Pixies turn to go on a walk. I sat with her for a little while to see if she would get use to me before taking her on a walk. I slowly picked her up and she bit me on my hand. I think this a natural reaction for Pixie and dogs like her that are scared of people. After a couple of days working at the Humane Society, I tried and tried to walk her but she would always bite and begin to shake nervously. Finally one day I took her for a walk and was okay with me holding her. She gained trust with me and I just soaked it all in. I accomplished a lot more with her and now we are best buds. 3. I believe that this is an important lesson because, the students come into the classroom not knowing anyone, not real familiar with his/he surroundings and dont know what to expect from the class or the educator. We as teachers can create a learning environment that is fun and enjoyable for all the students so they feel comfortable and confident in themselves at school. Introduce yourself to the class and have the students introduce themselves as well. Show all the children around the classroom so they know where things are when materials are needed. Slowly gain the students trust and have a successful learning experience for both the children and the teachers too. 4. I would personally make sure that all the students have knowledge of where things are located in the classroom so they feel some independence. Have a reading center where the children can choose a book to read. Have a game center where they can play games with other students and enjoy some free time. I would constantly remind the students ask questions if you dont understand and I will always answer to the best of my ability. I would do my best to build some relationship with each student like I did with the dogs at the shelter so they feel comfortable with me and feel like they can come to me for anything.
