16 Projects Receive Support
From CBTs Social Grants Program
Sixteen projects that support social well-being and address
social issues in Basin communities have been approved to
receive $500,000 from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).
Tese projects tackle diverse social issues and will afect
people of many ages across the region, said Neil Muth, CBT
President and CEO. Tey will complement and strengthen
the social supports already in place within our communities.
One of the successful recipients is the Advocacy Centre
of the Nelson CARES Society. Its project involves deliv-
ering a legal support program aimed at assisting individ-
uals dealing with family law and child protection issues in
the West Kootenay region.
Tis program will deliver much needed services
throughout the West Kootenay to families working
through dif cult family challenges, said Jenny Robinson,
Executive Director, Nelson CARES Society. Were excit-
ed about the potential impacts of this project.
Te Social Grants Program is a three-year pilot with an
annual granting budget of $1 million. Granting decisions
are made by the Social Grants Program Selection Com-
mittee, a volunteer group of Basin residents that includes
individuals who have experience and expertise in the so-
cial sector and individuals who have broader commun-
ity development experience. For more information, visit

Water Conservation
Measures
Did you know...?
that lawns require only 3 cm of water,
equal to about an hour of sprinkling
per week?
The City of Nelson would like to remind residents to
conserve water and is asking residents to:
Water every other day only.
Premises with even numbered civic addresses may sprinkle
on even numbered days (ie: 2nd, 4th, 6th etc) and premises
with odd numbered civic addresses may sprinkle on odd
numbered days (ie: 1st, 3rd, 5th etc).
Water in the early morning before 10 am, or early
evening after 6 pm.
Premises with underground sprinklers should have the sys-
tem checked for leaks and the timer set to only give the lawn
about one hour worth of water each week. Ensure that water
does not over-spray onto sidewalks, driveways or roads.
**City employees may speak with you, or leave a note
concerning water over use.
Water conservation tips and videos are available to view on the City
of Nelsons website (under Public Notices) at www.nelson.ca. Dur-
ing the summer season, daily residential water use is 50% more
than winter season consumption primarily because of lawn and
garden watering, and car washing. Excessive water use during
summer months draws down the reservoir level reducing stor-
age capacity. Storage is required for frefghting purposes and
for backup supply. The City of Nelson thanks
Water Smart residents for their cooperation.

Early in the morning of June 16
th
2013, an act of vandalism
occurred at the Nelson Hydro Six Mile Substation on the
North Shore. Tis caused a power outage of over three
hours for approximately 2900 Nelson Hydro electricity
customers. Te vandals tossed a steel tape measure into the
25,000 volt electrical wires. Being highly conductive the
steel tape initiated a fash-over fault between wires, and the
resulting arc cause considerable damage. Over fve feet of
the tape measure was vaporized in the arc.
We are highlighting the efects of this vandalism for two
reasons:
Firstly, actions like this are extremely dangerous. Although
the culprits may have been at a distance from the fault arc,
there is a high possibility of injury from fying debris and the
arc fash, which can cause severe burns and vision damage.
Nelson Hydro staf are required to observe strict safety
procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment
when inside substations or working with high voltage.
Individuals purposely causing equipment failure from
outside the fence are creating, and exposing themselves to,
extreme hazards that the design of the substation could not
reasonably protect against.
Secondly, these wilful and malicious actions cause
unnecessary power outages which result in unneeded
expenses for emergency response call-outs and equipment
repair. Tese actions also reduce power reliability and may
cause unsafe conditions for home and business owners
which leads to increased power rates for customers.
Nelson Hydro apologizes to those customers who
experienced this outage. We hope that by highlighting this
incident, it will encourage individuals to reconsider before
taking part in this extremely dangerous type of activity to
electrical infrastructure and property.
If anyone witnessed this event, or has information about this
incident please call the RCMP at -250-352-2156. Trough
the RCMP, Nelson Hydro is ofering a reward to anyone
supplying information to the RCMP that leads to the arrest
of the vandals involved in this incident. Please report
anything that you feel may assist in their investigation. For
anonymous tips, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Munro Art Show
At Te Nelson Library
Brush meets bluster in a series of colourful, weather-in-
spired acrylic landscapes by Yvonne Vanens Munro, now
showing at the Nelson Library. Its a dramatic exhibition
that celebrates the power of nature in the Kootenays.
When Munro was six months old her parents, recently
emigrated from Holland, drove from Nova Scotia to Brit-
ish Columbia in a Volkswagen truck with a bottle warmer.
Te truck broke down in Nelson, where
Munro and her mother stayed for six
weeks while her father carried on to the
West Coast to fnd work and a home.
Munro was raised on the coast with
two sisters and a brother, in what she
describes as a rough and tumble, tu-
multuous childhood. Tere, when she
wasnt exploring the woods at the foot
of the Garibaldi mountains, she drew.
In high school and college, she says,
art class was my little place of peace,
away from the angst of growing up.
As an adult, Yvonne returned to the
Kootenays with her family, where her
own two kids enjoyed a rough and tum-
ble, tumultuous childhood. She took
classes through the Oxygen Centre and
the Kootenay School of Arts. Studying
art is fantastic, she says, but painting
is the best way to become a painter.
About this exhibition, Munro explains, I want to cele-
brate the Kootenays and mountain weather with this show.
So I took the Osprey across the Kootenay Lake with my
camera and took several hundred pictures. Tese paint-
ings are the result.
Munro is one of four Nelson Public Library bookmark
artists, along with Lainey Benson, Rick Foulger, and Keira
Zaslove. Bookmarks are available at the Library. Munros
exhibition continues through July and August.

Simple Ways To Cut Calories
People take a variety of approaches when attempting to
lose weight. Some try fad diets that may or may not produce
results, while others commit to a daily exercise regimen.
One of the more popular ways men and women attempt
to lose weight is to cut calories from their diets. Cutting
calories can be an efective way to shed extra pounds, but
it should be done in a way that does not compromise your
overall health for the sake of a slimmer waistline. Any
changes adults make to their diets should be discussed
with their physicians prior to going forward, but the fol-
lowing are a handful of healthy ways to cut calories.
Put away the potato chips. Potato chips are a favorite snack
of many people, but those delicious chips could be a reason
your belt size is getting bigger. Instead of potato chips, opt for
air-popped popcorn, which contains roughly one-fourth the
amount of calories as potato chips. Popcorn also is a whole
grain, which means youll be adding fber, minerals and vita-
mins to your diet while decreasing your caloric intake.
Add healthy favor to your pasta. Perhaps because its
become increasingly available in recent years, whole grain
pasta has risen in popularity. But men and women looking
to cut calories can go even further when cooking up some
pasta for dinner. When making whole grain pasta, cook
about half the amount you normally would, and then add
fresh or even frozen vegetables to the mix. Reducing the
amount of pasta will reduce the amount of calories you
consume, and the vegetables will add nutrients to your
diet. Another way to cut calories from your favorite pasta
dishes is to leave the parmesan cheese on the sideline.
Parmesan cheese can be loaded with in calories, and the
vegetables should add all the favor you need.
Choose the right condiment for your sandwich. Many
people love a good deli sandwich slathered in mayonnaise.
But while that sandwich might be delicious, that mayo
could be adding a signifcant number of calories to your
meal. One tablespoon of mayonnaise can have as many as
57 calories, while an alternative like mustard can be just as
favorful while containing far fewer calories.

Tey may be colourful, but theyre
seriously out of place! What? Invasive
weeds which we all see, and may enjoy
when blooming. Whats the problem?
Tey were NOT originally in the West
Kootenay ... or even on the North Amer-
ican continent, and having been brought
or found their ways here, are prolifer-
ating either by scattering their seeds, or
spreading their roots (some very deep-
ly!) and taking up soil where native spe-
cies otherwise would grow. Tey also lef
their natural predators behind.
We each can help such invasive plants
as these from spreading further! Before
they go to seed, cut the blooms from
Colourful Orange Hawkweed in yards,
beside trails ... most anywhere we look
right now. Scotch Broom with its bright yellow blooms
now is busy producing seed-heads, but the whole plant
can be cut of just under the soil surface, before the seeds
spread further. Its also very fammable and may harbour
deer ticks. Japanese Knotweed (no, not Bamboo) is now
considered hazardous waste and/or afecting European
real estate, needs removing, curtailing wherever found
asap! Spotted Knapweed, Cleavers, Common Tansy (hu-
man and pet allergen), Burdock, Tistle, Hoary Alyssum
(poison for horses), Bindweed (commonly called Mor-
ning Glory) and many others of lesser terrestrial priority
are threatening our local economy, native habitats, and
food sustainability. Also of urgent concern are aquatic
species. All need to be handled very carefully, especially
seedheads and roots. Te RDCK transfer station will ac-
cept small quantities, double bagged, free of charge, larger
amounts with prior notice only. DO NOT include with
garden waste.

New Staf Ready For Visitors
Now that summer is here, the Kokanee Park Visitor
Centre is open once again to inform and entertain visitors.
For the second year, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks
have hired 2 full-time students to assist the EcoSociety in
keeping the Visitor Centre open from 9 am to 9 pm. Tis
year, Sabrina Schoch from Nelson and Alexandra Kack
from Verdun, Quebec will be helping visitors with every-
thing from cofee to questions about local parks. Sabrina
is a second year student at UBC Okanagan in History and
Alexandra will be entering McGill this fall to study An-
thropology. Alex-
andra was hired
with the help of a
partial grant from
the federal Young
Canada Works
program which
assists French
speaking students
in fnding jobs
across Canada.
Te BC Parks
Park Enhance-
ment Fund is pro-
viding most of the
funding for the
other position.
Te Friends
were formed in
1988 when Inter-
pretive Services
in BC Parks were
privatized. Until
interpretation was
axed by the Liber-
al government of
the day in 2001,
the Friends hired
one or two stu-
dents on partial
grants to assist
the interpreters
and ran a sales desk to help fund their portion of the wage
package. From 2003 to 2005, the Friends hired a manager
and staf to run the facility in the hopes that the polit-
ical winds would shif in favour of returning funding to
interpretation. For the next 5 summers, the Park Facility
Operator, with the assistance of a staf position from BC
Nature, kept the Visitor Centre open on a limited basis.
Since 2011, the West Kootenay Ecosociety has taken on
the job of providing services.
Continuing the success of last year, the Visitors Centre
will present the RedFish Festival on Sunday, August 25 to
celebrate and learn more about the spawning kokanee sal-
mon. New this year is a week long Eco day camp for 8-12
year olds at the park. Naturalist educator Monica Nissen
and Aboriginal educator Toni Appleby will ofer hikes,
nature studies, native crafs and more. Senior Naturalist
Joanne Siderius will be on hand fve days a week for even-
ing presentations and lots of Jerrys Rangers kids activities
during the day. Storytelling continues on Saturdays. And
of course, Natures Notebooks and Drawing from Natures
for kids will be back along with three morning yoga class-
es for adults.
In addition to BC Parks, funds have been granted by
RDCK Areas E and F, Columbia Basin Trust, and the Os-
prey Foundation for 2013 to help keep this vital attraction
open in Kokanee Creek Park.
Local Film Debuts At
Civic Teatre
A Kootenay-made short flm, which has screened at over
ffeen festivals in Canada and internationally over the past
year, will make its long-awaited Nelson debut next week.
Eyes In Te Forest: Te Portraiture of Jim Lawrence ofers a
rare and stunning look into the world of well-known Koo-
tenay wildlife photographer Jim Lawrence. Te flm will be
screened at the Civic Teatre on Wednesday, July 17 at 7
pm, along with the with feature documentary Manufactured
Landscapes, as part of Touchstones Nelsons Art & Activism
event series. Filmmaker Miriam Needoba and photograph-
er Jim Lawrence will be on hand afer the screenings for a
question and answer period with the audience.
Eyes in the Forest interweaves the startling imagery of
Jim Lawrences still photography with Needobas sublime
cinematography of the West Kootenays. Te flm is both a
restrained study of landscape and wildlife, and a conver-
sation between two artists and their art forms.
We are excited to be able to have the Nelson premiere
at Te Civic Teatre with its new digital projector, says
Needoba. We will be screening a DCP (Digital Cinema
Print) of the flm, so it will be shown in the best possible way.
Nelson-based Needoba is hoping to fnd a broadcast-
er for the flm, which has already screened at Planet In
Focus Environmental Film Festival, and is currently in
competition at DOCUTAH flm festival. Needoba had
some local help with this, her frst documentary flm,
working with sound editor Luke Martin and sound de-
signer Adham Shaik. Te flm was produced with the as-
sistance of the National Film Board of Canada, Columbia
Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Columbia Basin Trust.

Fundraising Event For Pat Henman
And Her Daughter Maia
On June 9 Nelson residents Pat Henman and her daugh-
ter Maia Vezina were critically injured in a head on colli-
sion. Afer three weeks in intensive care they were recently
moved to the trauma unit at Foothills Medical Centre in
Calgary. Tey face months of recovery and rehabilitation.
Some of Pats closest friends have come together to plan
a fundraising event to help the family. Raising the Curtain
for Pat and Maia will take place at the Capitol Teatre on
Wednesday, July 31.
Doors open at 6:30 pm, show time is 8 pm. Guests are invit-
ed to come early and get their photo taken in the photo booth
(photos will be shared with Pat and Maia), bid on some great si-
lent auction items and videotape a personal message to the girls.
And thats just for starters!!! Te show promises to be a night
to remember with performances by Allison Girvan, Bessy
Wapp, Lucas Myers, Shenango, Hiro Ido, Michael Graham,
Jenny Craig and many more!!
According to Kim Adamson, one of the event organizers,
the response from the Nelson community has been over-
whelming. Tere is so much talent in Nelson and so many
of the performers have worked with Pat, who is an accom-
plished singer and actor, that the line-up for the show was
flled within days. Te response to the request for auction
items was just as immediate and the planning team has al-
ready confrmed over 60 auction items with more coming
in every day.

Tickets are now on sale at the Capitol Teatre and can
be purchased during box of ce hours (12 pm to 4:30 pm,
