Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Sacraments of Reconciliation and first Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

PASTORS CORNER

Dear Parishioners,
While I am away on my vacation, I leave the following Reflection for your consideration.

Msgr. Richard

How could Moses have been more explicit in what he asked of those who followed him on the long pilgrimage to the Promised Land? He invites them to keep Gods commandments and suggests that they return to God with heart and soul. Did he ask something beyond their capability? No. He adds, For this commandis not too mysterious and remote for you. Rather, is is something very nearalready in your mouths and in your hearts. They must only carry it out. Jesus may well have been pondering this moment when he answered the scholar who asked him how to inherit eternal life. Jesus demonstrated his Jewish credentials by reciting part two of the Shema, the central prayer of Judaism from the book of Deuteronomy, recited twice daily by observant Jews: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind. Jesus may or may not have surprised his questioner when he added a second commandment to the first: and your neighbor as yourself. It is evident that the questioner could not have known to whom he was speaking, as he replied to Jesus: You have answered correctly. Imagine not only giving Jesus a quiz, but then grading him on it! His next question to Jesus was: And who is my neighbor? Jesus answers by telling the tale of a victim of robbers. There are many features in this story that we should note. Consider first the injured man was passed by the priest and the Levite, who no doubt were on their way to the Temple in Jerusalem. If they had encountered or assisted the bloody victim, they would have been rendered ritually impure and thus incapable of making the sacrifice as they intended. But then a Samaritan travelerwas moved with compassion at the sight. Remember the Samaritans were outsiders; Jews and Samaritans did not even speak to each other. But it is a Samaritan heart that is moved with compassion. What had to astonish those who heard Jesus tell the tale of the Good Samaritan is that an outsider, not a priest or a Levite, is the one who first makes his heart like the heart of Jesus. Notice next that Jesus quizzes the one who first quizzed him: Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers victim? The answer is simple: The Samaritan. But instead the answer came: The one who treated him with mercy. The speaker avoided even speaking the word Samaritan, the name of the group he despised. But Jesus tells him to Go and do likewise. Imagine the consternation that scholar must have felt, as he was commanded to imitate the virtue of the very one he had despised. The challenge is ours as wellto make our hearts like the heart of Jesus, moved with compassion to act in love. William C. Graham

LIVING GODS COMMANDS

The Book of Deuteronomy is a series of sermons addressed to the people of Israel by Moses right before they were to enter the Promised Land. Moses had led them from the slavery of Egypt and was with them for many years as they traveled through the Sinai Desert. Moses knew he would die before the people could enter their Promised Land, so he is in a sense giving them some last words of wisdom before he would have to leave them. Todays first reading begins with an incomplete sentence: If only you would heed the voice of the LordThe sentence implies that God would bless them greatly if only they would heed the voice of the Lordand the passage goes on to stress that people do not have to guess what God wants of them. God has been very clear as to how he wants us to live. Its no hidden mystery. This concept connects with todays gospel, the story of the good Samaritan. When a scholar of the law asked Jesus what God wants of us, Jesus reply to the man shows that the man already knew the answer to his question. Almost instinctively, we all know what God wants of all of us. Knowing it is not the problem, but living it is. Fr. Joe Robinson

Backpack & School Supplies for St. Francis Center (SFC)

While youre out and about, watch for sales and pick up a few items for this very needed collection for the inner city poor. Collection boxes are located in the Vestibule. The drive ends on Sunday, August 4.

What happens when abuse is reported? Most people who hold positions of trust in Catholic institutions are mandated by California State Law to report child abuse. Teachers, teachers aides and counselors in our schools, therapists and social workers in our counseling agencies, nurses and doctors in hospitals, and clergy in parishes or other ministries all have the obligation to report the reasonable suspicion of child abuse to the local police or to child protective services. When any of these people know of or have reasonable suspicion of abuse, they report it to the appropriate institutions owned and operate privately by religious communities.

For particular help you may call:

Suzanne Healy Director of Assistance Ministry 213/637-7650

Pleaseno used items. A flyer listing the needed

items is available in the Vestibule.

Would you like to help?

Andcan you help with some of your time? We need volunteers to take the items from the Vestibule to Gara Hall (after each week-end Mass); to help us sort the donations weekly; and finally to prepare everything for the SFC van pick-up! For more information or to volunteer
