Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is a set of beliefs that I want to incorporate into my classroom I believe that a teacher is obligated to enter the classroom with only the highest of expectations for each and every one of his or her students. Thus, as an educator I will maximize the amount of time on task in the classroom while promoting good citizenship. With dedication, perseverance, hard work, and effective leadership students will rise to the occasion. I believe that as a teacher I will need to bring an open mind, a positive attitude, and high expectations to the classroom each day. I believe that I owe it to my students, as well as the community, to bring consistency, diligence, and warmth to my job in the hope that I can ultimately inspire and encourage such traits in the children as well. I believe that as a teacher I will need to adjust my teaching style to fit the needs of my students learning styles. I understand that not every student learns the same way and that I need to have a classroom that is open to helping students learn in the best environment that they can. I believe that as a teacher it is imperative to be there for my students. I will need to be accessible in many different forms; email, phone, in-person. I will need to show my students that they can trust me and that I will be there for them. I need to be an active part in their lives at school. It is important to show that I care and that I have their best interest at heart. I believe that as a teacher I need to show compassion and empathy. Every student that I will have will have a different background. I need to have an understanding of cultural diversity and cultural assimilation. There may be some circumstances that are difficult to handle and I need to put compassion and empathy first. I believe that as a teacher the classroom environment should be interactive. There should be many opportunities for the students to learn in student-directed teaching versus teacher-directed teaching. I want students to have the opportunities to be able to demonstrate what they have learned and how important it is for them to come up with their own ideas and thoughts. I believe that as a teacher I will be a leader and a role model. Teaching isnt just about standing at the blackboard and dictating but utilizing the whole classroom and being an active participant in the classroom. If I make a mistake, I must own up to my mistake. I also will show respect to my students and ensure that I receive respect back. I want the classroom to be an environment of warmth but also mutual respect between teacher and classmates. I realize that I will also learn from my students and that learning is a lifelong commitment.
