Students Activity

Answers may vary. My mother is more understanding than my father. My eldest brother is the tallest among us. My sister is smart. B. Focusing on the structure What do you see, class, in the first set of pictures? What are the names of those mountains? Very good! How about the second set of pictures? What do you see? Youre right! And what are those gadgets? Correct! In our first set of pictures, what is the specific height of each mountain? Very good. How do you describe Mt. Apo? Okay. Let us compare it to Mt. Fuji. How do you describe Mt. Fuji to Mt. Apo? Why do you say so? Very good. Let us try to compare the three mountains. How do you describe Mt. Everest compared to Mt. Apo and Mt. Fuji? Exactly! What is the height of Mt. Everest again? Okay. Let us go to the second set of pictures. How do you describe the price of the cell phone? Let us compare the price of cell phone to the price of digital

expensiv more most e expensive expensive - Okay, class. What adjective is used in describing Mt. Apo? - Why do you think the base form of modifier high is used?

The cell phone is expensive.

Excellent! So what degree of modifier high is? Correct! How about Mt. Fuji? Why is there a need to add suffix er to the base form of the high? What degree of modifier higher is?

The digital camera is more expensive than the cell phone.

Laptop is the most expensive among the three.

mountains

(Students will do so)

Those are Mt. Apo, Mt. Fuji, and Mt. Everest. Different kinds of gadgets

Those are cell phone, digital camera and laptop. Mt. Apo has a height of 9,692 ft.

The adjective high is used.

The base form of the modifier high is used because it is only describing the noun Mt. Apo and there is no comparison. Positive degree There is a need to add suffix er to the base form high because there is a comparison between Mt. Fuji and Mt. Apo. Comparative degree

Why is it that in our first example the suffix er is used and not the intensifier more?

Very good. What degree of modifier more expensive is?

Correct! How many objects did we compare?

You are right! Let us go to our next example Mt. Everest.

Why is there a need to add suffix est to the base form of high instead of adding suffix er?

Let us observe the next object. We compared the laptop to the cell phone and digital camera, right?

Why is there a need to add intensifier most to the base form expensive?

Okay. So what degree of modifier highest is? What degree the modifier most expensive is? Why not adding suffix est to the base form of modifier instead of most?

Very good! Let us take a look at the second box on the chart.

How do you describe the price of the cell phone?

Very good.

What form of modifier expensive is?

Why do we have to use the base form of modifier expensive? There is a need to add suffix est to the base form high because we compare Mt. Everest with Mt. Apo and Mt. Fuji. We add suffix est and not er because er is used in comparing two things only. Superlative degree.

Alright. How about digital camera? Why is the intensifier more added to the base form expensive and not the suffix er?

Expensive

Comparative degree with intensifier more forms the superlative degree most.

base form

The base form of modifier expensive is used because it only modifies the cell phone and there is no comparison. The intensifier more is used because the modifier expensive has three syllables, thus, it is a long word.

C. Forming Generalization Again, class, take a look at the chart and identify which column is positive, comparative, and superlative degree of modifier.
higher more expensive highest most

high expensive expensive

The suffix er is used because the modifier high is of one syllable, thus, a short word.

With the help of this illustration, what generalization can you formulate?

Comparative degree

Correct. What else?

We compared two objects: the cell phone and digital camera.

Yes, thats right. But how do we form comparative degree?

Yes, Maam.

What if the adjective has three or more syllables?

The intensifier most is added to the adjective expensive because there are three objects being compared.

Very good! How about superlative degree? When do we use it?

Superlative degree

How do we form superlative degree?

Very good answers, class.

D. Exercises Note the adjectives listed in the following chart. In the blank write the correct comparative or superlative form of an adjective. -
