Introducing the XYZ family of Vertical Machining Centres

XYZs VMCs are all built on the well proven model of a solid Meehanite ribbed casting with induction hardened and ground slides with Turcite-B coated ways. This combination gives optimum vibration absorption and rigidity. All of the VMC range have optimised digital servo motors and automatic lubrication to slides and ball screws to provide fast rapids. The simple conversational programming of the Siemens ShopMill control means the sequence from blueprint drawing to finished part takes the minimum of operator keystrokes. Canned cycles cater for common machining functions such as contour pocketing with islands and once written the program can be throughly checked using the graphical simulation, with the finished component displayed as a 2D or 3D image. These Vertical Machining Centres have proved their worth in the toughest of sub-contract machine shop environments, so you can be assured that any XYZ VMC is a workhorse you can rely on well into the future.

47

Box Way versus Linear Slides The XYZ range of VMCs use Induction Hardened Box Ways and Turcite-B coated anti-friction slide ways. This design offers the maximum rigidity and vibration absorption far exceeding what is possible for machines using linear bearing slides. Machines using linear bearing slides are fine for light work but subcontract shops and companies who machine a wide variety of materials (from aluminium, to cast iron, stainless steel and even Inconel) need a machine that will perform on all of their work. Linear way machines are cheaper to produce and can have faster rapids and acceleration, (although on short moves they seldom achieve the rapid rates quoted) but we think these advantages are far outweighed by the superior cutting performance and longevity of Box Way VMCs.

Fully protected All XYZ VMCs feature steel concertina guards on all axes to protect the solid ribbed castings, hardened square slides and precision ground ballscrews. Box Way construction on three axes The wide box type slideways on the three axes are hardened and precision ground assuring superior vibration dampening and rigidity. Slideway surfaces are coated with Turcite-B for improved wear resistance and this provides superior performance, faster machining times and improved longevity.

Induction Hardened Box Ways and Turcite coated anti-friction slide ways as featured on: XYZ 560, 710, 1020 and 1510 VMCs Please note we fit NSK High Precision High Quality linear ROLLER bearing slides on our XYZ 1060 HS High Speed Machining Centre which is designed for cutting at high speed - an appropriate application for this technology. For more on the XYZ 1060 HS see pages 59 to 62. Hand scraped Turcite-B slide Automatic Lubrication The automatic lubrication is controlled by the CNC system that meters and distributes oil to the guideways and ballscrews to ensure all critical components are lubricated with the correct amount of oil at all times. Swarf Management Wash down facilities are standard on all VMCs. Swarf from the machining area is washed down to the swarf removal area. An optional conveyor can further reduce the time spent cleaning.

Direct drive on three axes The three axes traverse are driven by high performance servomotors which drive ballscrews with couplings assuring high positioning accuracy under any load condition. The optimised ballscrews are preloaded to minimise backlash. As featured on: XYZ 560, 710, 1020, 1510 and 1060 HS VMC

Spindle air blast All XYZ VMCs feature spindle air blast to remove any contamination from the spindle and tooling during toolchange operations

Laser inspection The laser equipment inspects positioning accuracy. This is then used by the control to compensate for ballscrew pitch error so ensuring machining accuracy and repeatability.

49

Ball bar testing Ball bar testing is performed to ensure circularity precision and accuracy . Test values are used as a reference for adjusting the machine to achieve optimum condition. The test items include backlash, lateral play, mismatched servo gains in the CNC and geometry errors such as squareness and straightness.

Tool release device Tool release is designed with a buffer to prevent spindle bearing damage. The floating tool clamp/unclamping feature ensures lifetime accuracy and long service life of the spindle. During tool change an airblast automatically cleans the spindle taper.

Spindle oil cooler Controlled by digital electronics the spindle oil cooler offers high accuracy temperature control of 1 C. The screen displays setting temperatures and actual temperatures for easy use. This optional extra is best suited to high speed machining.

High Performance Spindles 8,000 rpm Spindle. This spindle is fitted as standard on all the XYZ VMCs. The advanced design provides high axial thrust capacity, generating minimum heat and has P4 class angular contact high precision bearings with standard spindle speed up to 8,000 rpm. The Labyrinth sealed design on the nose of the spindle prevents coolant or fine particle contamination during machining and are pressurised to 1 bar to stop ingress of coolant. These spindles are dynamically balanced to give smooth and accurate cutting performance even at high speeds and the high rigidity of the bearings makes them perfect for machining all types of materials. Spindles are driven by non-slip toothed timing belts and pulleys.

12,000 rpm Spindle option The 1020, 1510 and 1060 HS all have a fully sealed oil circulation system within the spindle jacket to dissipate heat from the bearings. The smaller 560 and 710 both have 12,000rpm ceramic bearing spindles. Both these spindle types are dynamically balanced to give smooth and accurate cutting performance even at high speeds and are driven by non-slip toothed timing belt and pulleys.

Optional on: XYZ 1020 VMCs when fitted with the 12,000rpm spindle Program storage and retrieval All XYZ VMCs are fitted with the Siemens 828D control and have 3Mb onboard program storage capacity. Extra memory can be gained by fitting a compact flash card or memory stick into the standard CF and USB slots which are mounted on the front of the control panel. Also as standard is the RJ45 (CAT5) connection which provides fast transfer speeds to a laptop or PC and with the free software provided it has never been easier to set up a network connection.

Optional on: XYZ 560, 710, 1020, 1510 VMCs Standard on: XYZ 1060 HS VMCs Through Spindle Coolant option Both the 8,000 and 12,000rpm spindles have 20.4kg/ cm2 high pressure coolant to efficiently dissipate swarf and heat from deep hole machining. XYZ 1060 HS - The High Speed VMC

The XYZ 1060 HS has a solid Meehanite ribbed casting with superb damping capability. NSK linear roller bearings give a strong vibration free machine that can traverse at 43 m/min. High traverse rates are kept in perfect control via the Siemens 840SL and the 1060 HS unique air damping of the Z axis. Block processing times of 4 milliseconds ensure the machines movements are both accurate, controlled and when used along side Siemens Compcad spline interpolator function (see page 37) make certain that even when machining complex 3D forms a superior surface finish will always be achieved. The dynamically balanced spindle, fitted with ceramic bearings and oil cooled will run up to 12,000 rpm as standard or can be increased with options of up to 15,000, 18,000 and 24,000 rpm. High feedrates are further enhanced with the pre-selection of tools enabling the 24 station side mounted arm toolchanger to achieve 2.5 sec tool to tool change times.

Hand scraped Turcite-B slide The XYZ range of VMCs use Induction Hardened Box Ways and Turcite-B coated anti-friction slide ways.
