LEADING THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

IMPROVING PLANT PERFORMANCE

Through experience, continuous research and the development of state-of-the-art products and technologies, Alstom has rightfully earned its position of leadership in the world of power generation. From 25 development centres and 13 laboratories around the globe, we focus on the improvement of plant performance, overall efficiency and helping our industry to reduce its environmental impact.
Significant improvements in performance and cost-effectiveness can be achieved by applying technology solutions to existing plant development. For example, material research has led to the construction of turbine blades from a large coated single crystal to enhance performance and minimise corrosion. Similarly, advanced engineering simulation systems, such as thermal modelling, have greatly extended the life of mechanical components in steam turbines and significantly increased power output.

IMPROVING PLANT EFFICIENCY

Alstoms technical expertise helps to improve significantly the efficiency of power plants. Today we offer advanced, high efficiency supercritical boilers operating at steam parameters of 600/620C and 275 bar. In addition, we are currently developing a prototype for an ultra supercritical (USC) power plant which will operate at 700C and 350 bar. This higher operational temperature will enable greater plant efficiency than ever before! Our turbine technology guarantees high efficiency even in combined-cycle power plants operating at part-load.

RESEARCH IN ACTION
In addition to our own research & development efforts to develop new emission control technologies and improve existing techniques, we are also involved in a number of public projects and partnerships, notably in the field of CO2 capture and storage. Within the ENCAP programme (funded by the European Union), research is under way to develop new CO2 capture technologies The Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP) technology platform (launched by the European Commission) aims at enabling European Fossil Fuel Power Plants to have zero CO2 emissions by 2020.

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Alstom has been able to reduce the environmental impact of power plants in many ways and integrates environmental impact analysis into the design process. This has a direct effect on lowering cost during the plant life cycle.

Overall efficiency improvements help to reduce CO2 emissions, while specific technologies minimise the emission of specific pollutants. For example, our high efficiency pulverised coal combustion system minimises all traditional pollutants. Circulating Fluidised Bed (CFB) technology inhibits nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, while flue gas desulphurisation technology can capture as much as 98% of sulphur dioxide emissions from conventional suspension-fired boilers. Similarly, advanced emission control systems are able to capture remaining emissions from pulverised coal and CFB units while also reducing mercury emissions. Our aim is to achieve near zero CO2 emissions through the application of efficiency, our Plant Integrator approach, and carbon capture technologies.

CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE

READY FOR CARBON CAPTURE: NOW AND TOMORROW

Of the main technology paths leading to the capture of CO2 emitted by burning fossil fuels, Alstom Power is concentrating on post-combustion technologies and oxy-combustion. One reason is that capture technologies must be adaptable to existing power stations. Secondly, they must serve as built-in components of the numerous power stations, mainly coal, that will be built by 2030, to meet the growing energy demand of developing countries. Applying this new technology to the global installed base, is a key challenge to which Alstom is fully committed.

POST-COMBUSTION CAPTURE
Post-combustion capture is the most readily available technology today and the most easily adaptable to the large installed base of coal and gas units. With this technology, the CO2 is selectively removed from flue gas in the power plant through a capture unit. The most widely developed post-combustion capture solvent is amine. The major problem with amine capture is the high cost: due to the heat required during the stripping phase to separate the amine solvent and CO2. This would lead to a 25% decrease in plant output. In February 2008 Alstom signed a joint development and commercialisation agreement with Dow Chemical Company, the global gas treating technology leader and the worlds largest producer of amines. This agreement aims to develop the most economic and environmentally conscious, amine-based carbon capture solutions. Alstom is also pursuing a very promising new post-combustion process involving chilled ammonia. This technology potentially has much lower energy requirements, significantly reducing the cost of CO2 capture. Alstom has a clear strategy to develop chilled ammonia both on coal and gas effluents and has announced numerous partnerships with EPRI, Statoil, WE Energies, AEP and EoN in order to validate the process on an industrial level before the end of 2011.

CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE

OXY-FIRING TECHNOLOGY
Oxy-firing technology involves burning solid fuel with high-purity oxygen rather than air. The combustion is controlled with a recycle stream of CO2. The flue gas obtained from oxycombustion is mainly composed of water and CO2, the latter of which is easily captured at the back-end by water separation. Oxy-firing applies to new units but may suit some retrofits as well. Alstom is playing a key role in developing oxy-fired PC and CFB techniques. We have been selected by the power producer, Vattenfall to set up the first steam power plant using the oxygen combustion of brown coal. Based on its CFB know-how, Alstom is also investigating breakthrough technologies such as chemical looping. This unique system replaces the traditional boiler with a two-stage chemical conversion process, using an oxygen 'carrier' to transfer oxygen to the fuel. The exhaust gas is similar to oxy-firing, enabling easy CO2 capture. Preliminary testing at the 10kW Chalmers unit (under the EU ENCAP programme) and continuing research on the chemical looping process development unit of Alstom in Windsor CT, in the USA and in Meudon, France are very promising.
