The Big Foot Lions Club
will host its 30th annual
Lobster Boil and Steak Fry
on Saturday, July 27. Known
as the biggest social event
in Fontana, the celebration
takes place at the lakefront
Read Park.
The event kicks off at
noon with lunch fare served,
including hot dogs, ham-
burgers, chips and soda.
Its a great place for family
and friends to gather to en-
joy live music all day long,
beginning at noon with Als
Blues Band. At 3 p.m., Mr.
Myers will entertain and at
7 p.m. the Eddie Butts band
will take the stage. In be-
tween these acts, Rock Cen-
tral will play.
In addition, there will
be a childrens activity area,
a beer tent serving Miller
products and wine coolers.
New last year was white and
red wine, which was a suc-
cess and will be repeated
this year. New to this years
lineup will be Leinenkugels
Summer Shandy and a
chance to meet one of the
Leinenkugel brothers.
Serving time for dinner
is 2 to 9 p.m., with drive-
through service at the park
house from 2 to 8 p.m.
Last year, the Lions
Club served more than 2,400
dinners with 400 sold at the
drive-through.
Advance tickets are
available at Sentry Foods
in Walworth, Chucks in
Fontana, from any Big Foot
Lions club member or by
calling Andy Pearce at (262)
215-5550. Advance ticket
prices are $32 for lobster,
$20 for steak; and at the
event for $34 and $22 for
steak.
Typically, the cooks run
out of dinners at about 7:30
p.m. Each dinner is served
with peas, boiled red pota-
toes, boiled onions, drawn
butter, rolls and a dessert.
The lobster boil was
started in 1983 at the old
red Eye inn in Linton, with
about 150 dinners served.
The Lions Club moved it
to Reid Park to accommo-
date the growing number of
guests. all the money raised
at this event goes to support
the Lions Clubs public en-
deavors, such as playground
equipment at the Little Foot
Playground Reid Park, Duck
Pond Park, Toynton Park
and a new pavilion in Linn
township.
The club also supports
area rescue squads, sports
teams, 4H programs and
scholarships.

Masters of the grill know
which cooking methods pro-
vide maximum avor and op-
timal tenderness, no matter
the grill in use. Nearly three
out of four American grillers
say the one meat they most
often grill is beef.
The Wisconsin Beef
Council, along with the
meat experts at Lake Ge-
neva Country Meats, offers 3
simple grilling steps to make
your steaks a standout this
summer:
1. Choose your cut.
Some of the best cuts for
grilling include: Strip, Flank,
Ribeye or Flat Iron Steak.
2. Prepare your beef.
Remove beef from refrig-
erator and avor beef with
herbs and seasonings as de-
sired. Dont forget to mari-
nate! Tender beef cuts can
be marinated for 15 minutes
to 2 hours for avor; less
tender cuts, such as ank,
should be marinated for 6
hours, but not more than
24 hours. Prepare grill (gas
or charcoal) according to
manufacturers directions
for medium heat.
3. Cook Your Beef.
Place on the cooking grid.
Grill, covered, according to
suggested grilling guide-
lines. View a short grilling
video from LGCM showing
the secrets to a great grilled
steak. The video highlights
a newer beef cut, the Flat
Iron steak, rich in avor for
a great value.
Start with Lake Geneva
Country Meats to get every-
thing you need to load your
grill this summer.
Lake Geneva Country
Meats does all meat cutting
on site, under Federal in-
spection, providing consum-
ers the safest, highest qual-
ity sausages that families
have come to trust for fresh-
ness and avor.
Master Meat Crafter,
Jeff Schmalfeldt, person-
ally makes sure that every
meat cut and stick of sau-
sage made at Lake Geneva
Country Meats embodies the
hand craftsmanship of age-
old meat crafting tradition,
guaranteeing wholesome-
ness in every bite.

lmost every-
one knows
about the Chi-
cago & Northwestern Railroad
which ran its famous trains,
including the Millionaire Spe-
cial, between Lake Geneva to
Chicago for nearly a century,
starting in 1871.
But Lake Genevas desire
for rail connections started
long before the C&NWRR
came here.
By the early 1850s,
Lake Geneva, then known as
Geneva, longed for a rail con-
nection to anywhere.
James Simmons, author of
Annals of Lake Geneva, Wis-
consin, noted that 1852 and
1853 were times of great
excitement over railroads.
Geneva residents were per-
haps feeling a bit jealous when
the Racine, Janesville & Mis-
sissippi Railroad (predecessor
to the Milwaukee Road) built
an east-west rail line to nearby
Elkhorn.
Then Delavan secured a
charter to run a rail line south
to Beloit.
Geneva stood a chance to
be a part of the Delavan con-
nection, Simmons wrote.
Lake Genevas rst railroad a forgotten failure
However, the Delavan line would require the city residents
to put up a subscription, amount unreported, to lure the rail
line here.
From the south, a group of businessmen approached Geneva
about making it a stop along a planned road line running from
Elgin to Richmond, Ill., through Genoa (subsequently Genoa
Junction, and then Genoa City), to Geneva, Elkhorn and White-
water to then connect to a spur of the Chicago & Galena Rail-
road to the northwest of Whitewater.
The alternative railroad called itself the Wisconsin Central
Railroad, which is not to be confused with the later Wisconsin
Central Railroad, chartered in 1871 by the Wisconsin State Leg-
islature.
Simmons reported that most residents of Geneva preferred
connection to Racine and Kenosha, but the old Wisconsin Cen-
tral was the best chance for any kind of rail line.
A connection to Chicago was considered better than no con-
nection at all.
A new state law allowed any towns along any proposed rail
lines to issue bonds to aid in railroad construction.
On Aug. 21, 1855, at a town meeting, the electors voted to
issue a $25,000 20-year bond at 8 percent interest to pay for
construction of the Wisconsin Central rail line.
The bonds were to be exchanged for stock in the railroad.
In fact, it looked like Geneva residents would get something
for nothing.
The townsfolk were told that, while the bond would secure
construction of the railroad through stock, the value of the stock
would pay for the bonds and dividends would pay the interest.
The bonds were issued Feb. 27, 1856.
In June 1856, the long-awaited railroad from Genoa was
completed. The line ran to the eastern border of Geneva, which,
just three months earlier, had been chartered as a village.
According to Simmons the historian, the depot was to be
located at the head of Broad Street. He was not specific as to
THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE 19 July 18, 2013
location. But years later, the
Chicago & Northwestern rail-
road, whose rails generally fol-
lowed the same rights-of-way
as those used by the old Wis-
consin Central, established its
depot at 500 N. Broad.
Its unknown if this is where
the old Wisconsin Central
planned to put their depot.
The old Wisconsin Central
depot was never built.
Simmons records himself
as one of the businessmen
who invested in a warehouse
near the endpoint of the Wis-
consin Central on the eastern
end of the village.
The old Wisconsin Central
rented the warehouse owned
by Simmons et.al. and used it
for offices and a station.
The 1,500 residents of
the newly-minted village of
Geneva rejoiced as Wisconsin
Central trains began arriving
daily from Elgin and Chicago.
Construction of the rail-
road, however, was not top-of-
the-line.
The railroads rails were
wood covered with strap iron.
This kind of rail didnt stand
up well to regular use.
And then an economic
slowdown hit.

The railroads, both freight and passenger, brought changes to
downtown Lake Geneva. The inux of summer visitors and residents
was one of the most visible. Carriages and steamer yachts waited to
whisk them to their destinations, crowding the lakefront and streets
all season long.
And those streets, which initially had been lined with wooden
homes, began to be lled with more substantial buildings, some
made of bricks that had been brought in by railway.
Cream City bricks were manufactured in Milwaukee of clay red
lacustrine, which was extracted along Lake Michigans shoreline Be-
cause the railroads and ports of the city made it easy to move the
distinctive product, it began to catch on regionally, then in Chicago,
and nally internationally, all the way to Hamburg, Germany in the
mid-1800s.
Closer to home, the new trend in building materials brought a
change to the complexion of downtown Lake Geneva. One of down-
towns most impressive structures is made of these distinctive buff-
colored bricks--the Metropolitan Building at the southeast corner of
Main and Broad streets.
Built in 1873 as the Hotel Clair, the Landmark Center is made of
Racine pressed cream bricks. According to Chicagos Clay Record
report of Feb. 14, 1901, Racines brickyards referred to their color
as Milwaukee Cream. (Like Band-aid and Jello, Cream City was
actually a brand name, not a generic term, by that point.) Lack of
railways, A. W. Wilker reported in the Clay Record, were holding
back the Racines competitiveness in the regions brick market. In
spite of that, by 1873 tens of thousands of Racine handmade bricks
had made their way to Main Street, Lake Geneva.
In 1874, the Potter Law was passed, setting freight rates for
shipments by rail. The president of Chicago & North Western Rail-
way, Albert Keep, wrote to Wisconsin Governor Taylor announcing
his intent to out the new law and keep charging the
same rates as before.

As Simmons wrote:
For several years they (the railroad) con-
tinued to visit us regularly, the travel and freight
constantly increasing, notwithstanding the gen-
eral stagnation of trade through the country,
and the failures of crops, and we began to con-
gratulate ourselves on account of our increased
facilities for intercourse with the world outside;
but some time in the fall of 1860, they ceased
to appear.
The strap iron rails were worn and out of
repair. The old Wisconsin Central, through
either a bad economy or bad management, did
not repair the line and stopped using it.
Simmons wrote that for about two years, a
flat car pulled by horses or mules, or by small
steam engines operated by residents who had
railroad experience, continued to carry goods
and passengers south to Genoa.
After a while, the strap iron rails were
beyond repair and the line fell out of use.
But the story didnt end there.
In October 1867, the holders of the bonds
issued by the town for the now-defunct Wiscon-
sin Central Railroad, came to the town electors
asking for half the value of the bonds as settle-
ment.
According to Simmons, village residents,
who knew they hadnt received full value from
their bond issue and believed themselves nei-
ther morally nor legally bound to pay them,
rejected the offer.
That decision came back later to haunt the
village.
Simmons wrote that the old Wisconsin Rail-
road bonds subsequently fell in the hands
of unscrupulous parties, who have succeeded
in overcoming all our defenses and recovered
their pound of flesh.
Simmons doesnt elaborate. But it may be
that the former bond holders sold their bonds
to financial speculators, who then took Geneva
to court to force it to meet its financial com-

CONCRETE BRIDGE #712 was constructed in 1908 for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. It con-
nected the tracks from Main Street near Wells Street over the outlet of Geneva Lake to Sage Street

bicyclists and hikers a scenic path for recreation.

mitments so the speculators could redeem the
bonds for cash.
Its probable that a court or courts upheld
the investors right to cash in the bonds.
On that bitter note, and perhaps because of
it, little more is said or known about the old,
departed and unlamented Wisconsin Central
Railroad.
For several years, Geneva struggled on, rail-
roadless.
But but money and serendipity changed
things for Geneva in 1871.
That year, Shelton Sturges a Chicago indus-
trialist, found the shore of Lake Geneva an
attractive site for a second home. He began
to spread the news to his wealthy friends in
Illinois.
And then the Chicago Fire brought flocks
of the Chicago wealthy to the shores of Geneva
Lake, where, in previous summers, they had
camped out or built cabins.
Now, they would use their wealth to build
palatial summer homes along the lakes shore-
line.
The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad took
notice.
The C&NW established a subsidiary line, the
Lake Geneva & State Line Railroad The rail line
was constructed on the old Wisconsin Central
line using state-of-the-art steel rails, restoring
Lake Genevas connections to Chicago.
By the 1880s, trains were a regular fea-
ture in Lake Geneva, bringing vacationers and
summer homeowners to Geneva Lake.
(Some notes also from Phil Fogles Grass
Roots - Lake Geneva Big Foot Publishing Co.,
Williams Bay, Wis., 1986., and When the Rail-
road Leaves Town, by Joseph P. Schwieterman,
2004, Truman State University Press.)
Story by Chris Schultz
FROM LAKE GENEVA IN VINTAGE POSTCARDS
THE LAKE GENEVA PASSENGER DEPOT once stood off of Wells and North Streets. The newer building
was constructed in 1890, over the site of an old wood frame building that served the same purpose. Chicago
& Northwest steam engine service through Lake Geneva ran nearly one hundred years from 1871 to 1975.
History is not clear on where the rail depot for the predecessor, Wisconsin Central Line, was located.

it off the turf with your 9-iron or pitching wedge. Sweeping
the ball compresses it, makes crisper contact and provides
a higher trajectory, all of which are needed to increase
distance.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE July 18, 2013
Lisa Berg joins Rauland Agency
Lisa Berg has joined The Rauland Agency team of Realtors. She stated,
Having a career in real estate has been a goal of mine for many years. I
chose to partner with The Rauland Agency because of their exceptional
reputation in our community, their friendly, family-type atmosphere in the
ofce, and their willingness to share their knowledge not only with their
clients, but also with their co-workers which results in great team-work.
I am so excited to pursue my career in this area because it has so much
to offer. People are drawn to our area for the opportunity to reconnect
with family and friends, and enjoy the many spring fed lakes and beauti-
ful beaches, nature and conservation recreation areas, golf courses, shops,
restaurants, churches, and community events.
My family and I moved to Walworth in 2005 for the excellent reputation
of the school systems. We have been very pleased with our decision and are
proud of our place we call home.
Whether you are a rst-time home buyer, in need of more space for a
growing family, considering the purchase of a second home, down-sizing,
or selling your home, lets work together to fulll your goals. I am a hard
worker and will do my best to meet or exceed your expectations.
Clean windows make good impression
Dirty windows are unsightly, and they can
prevent benecial sunlight from entering a
home. Cleaning windows need not be done every
week, but it shouldnt be overlooked completely,
either. While it certainly may be a chore to clean
windows, there are ways to make the task much
more tolerable.
Curb appeal can be very important when
selling a home. Even a home with a perfectly
manicured lawn and the newest roong and sid-
ing can seem unappealing if the windows are
dirty.
Keeping windows clean requires a good deal
of work. For the acrophobics, cleaning second-
story windows can test the nerves. Having the
right tools on hand and a strategy in place will
make the job easier to manage.
Cleaning windows wont necessarily be
easy, but the following nine-step process can
make the task less difcult and time-consum-
ing.
1. Choose a day when it is overcast so you
will not be blinded by the sun while cleaning.
This also helps prevent streaking. Begin by
gathering what youll need to get the task done.
Having everything at the ready will enable
you to move from one window to the next.
Here are the basic supplies you will need:
* cleaning solution
* cloth, newspaper or squeegee
* towel
* spray bottle
* extension pole to reach high windows
* vacuum
* ladder or step stool
* garden hose
2. Take down and clean drapery or blinds
when cleaning the windows. Remove the cur-
tains so you will have an unobstructed surface
with which to work.
3. Start with the interior side of the win-
dows, as they are easier to access. Place a towel
on the sill to catch any drops so the sill or the
oor will stay dry.
4. Spray a lint-free cloth or the window di-
rectly with the cleaning solution. The edges and
corners of the window tend to accumulate the
most grime, so begin by cleaning those areas
rst. Once they are clean and you will not ex-
change dirt to the center of the window, work
on the middle. Wipe the windows in a horizontal
direction to help alleviate dripping.
5. To create a streak-free surface, some
people prefer to use a squeegee to drag out any
pockets of moisture for more even drying. Be
sure to wipe the rubber strip of the squeegee af-
ter each pass on the window. You may choose to
buff out any other streaks with newspaper.
6. Vacuum the window sill and frame after-
ward to catch any dust and debris.
7. Repeat the process for all interior win-
dows.
8. Move outdoors and start off by spraying
the window with a garden hose to loosen any of
the accumulated grime. Use your cleaning so-
lution to dissolve the rest of the dirt. You may
want to let it sit on the window if there is stub-
born grime. Repeat the cleaning process used
indoors for each window.
9. If exterior second-oor windows are hard
to reach, consider using a ladder and extension
pole to extend your reach. Upper windows will
not be scrutinized as closely as lower windows,
so you may have a greater margin for error. If
the windows are simply too high up, rely on a
professional window cleaner to get the job done
rather than risk falls or other injuries.
Mix your own cleaning solution
It may take trial and error to nd a solution
that works.
Here is one recipe you may want to start
with.
1 cup white vinegar
11/2 cups rubbing alcohol
2 drops of dish soap
Pour into a clean and empty spray bottle.
Remember: Never mix bleach and ammonia
together to create a cleaning solution, as toxic
fumes will result.
