Andre Powell Mid-term 1.

At the beginning of the semester I asked myself, I wonder if i'll actually be able to adjust to the college life style smooth and quickly? I wasnt sure if I would be able to adapt to the college life because I was always used to getting things. Not exactly handed to me because I did have to work for things, but just not a lot I can admit. I was afraid that because they were so lenient in high school that I wouldnt be able to do that well in this English class. Surprisingly, Ive been able to manage my own and stay on top of my school work, not only in this class, but in all my classes. I was also skeptical about how I used my time in college, and if I would be able to make it to class, or how I would do with the absences because I was borderline in high school. Ive been doing pretty well with that actually. Ive never actually been late to class. So all in all, Ive been really good with adjusting to the whole college life. I still have a lot to learn, but I have the basics. (201) 2. What are the differences between high school and college? This answer can be so long and can go on forever. Some of the differences are the responsibility ones. In high school, everythings always so easy to get away with; you dont need to worry about not turning in a couple of assignments or just not coming to class for a few days. If you knew your material enough to pass the tests, you were good regardless if you didnt come to class. In college its a whole different set up. Youre expected to come to class every single day, whether you know the material or not. With attendance in college, you have two unexcused that usually count, after that the rest start counting towards your final grade. So yes, it is possible to fail the class just by not coming. You are always responsible in college for turning in your work on time. In high school they usually let you bring it in late with a note, but in college, even if youre still sick, you should still go. You have to manage your time a lot more in college as well, because you want to get involved in different things. (405 3. In College, I have started to notice that there is more discussion rather than it being lecture based like it was when I was in high school. I like it how it is in college. Because I feel like I learn better and learn more when we discuss rather than just sitting and listening to the teacher talk about a subject. When you discuss something, there s more than one teacher to hear from. You have multiple people which mean more and multiple views to hear on a certain subject or topic. When you have discussion you have the chance to enter the conversation with an open mind. When you do that you can change the way you think because youre not just listening to one person. But also with the change from lecture-based to discussion is more responsibility. You have to now be able to do your part and pull your own weight. You cant rely on others to give the information all the time. The teacher will expect you to put out information just like you are taking it in. Its not that much of a bad thing though because as youre putting it out, youre giving others a chance to get some information. (612)

4. Well, if I looked at the Differences between College and High School list and noticed that something was not on there that should be on there is that you are most likely not living close to your home. This is a really big change. I was one of those people that thought, eh, I wont miss home. I just want to leave. But when you actually get to college, it is a huge change. I actually started missing home the second week of UTOP. Being away from home means you probably will not get the little things that you took for granted a while ago. You do not get to sleep in your own bed anymore. You also have to start wearing shower shoes to wear when you are showing, which completely loses the homey feeling. When you go away from home, some people go away as far as across the country. That is a real drastic change. I am only 3 hours away from home and I miss it. Although phone calls, texting, and skyping are great, there is nothing better and nothing that comes close to those hugs from your mom or when she rubs our hair to bed at night. (818) 5. As I look at the list of many key concepts of this course, I find that the intellectual growth and maturity choice is the one that fits me best. I feel like this choice can be all the other choices as well, just in one general topic. I feel like I am starting to grow and mature from the high school-minded Andre. I am starting to adapt better with how college works even though I still have a lot to work on. I feel like I have gained more responsibility and understand my responsibilities as well. This can go along with maturity because I think that as you mature, you gain more responsibility. I have started to adapt to not being able to rely on my teachers as much to tell me what work is due when. I am now responsible for when I get to class, whether it is on time or late. I have grown intellectually by adapting to the change in the different college atmosphere. I have learned new methods that I did not know before. I have taken in more knowledge about inquiry and what questions to ask. I feel like I apply to this one the most. (1,022) 6. As I look at the list of many key concepts, not only do I see things that I am very capable of, but I also see things that I find myself struggling with. Not doing bad or not impossible, just struggling with and finding it harder to do than others. That would have to be the writing process and revision concept. When I was back in high school, I always noticed that I did not score as well as others when it came to writing essay and writing prompts and such. In college I fear that that habits going to stick with me. Ive noticed that you have to use inquiry a lot in the writing process here. I am afraid that I have not yet grasped the full concept of how to inquire the right things and if Im asking

the right questions, or what even should I ask. I never really had a Writing process when I was in high school so I fear that that might come hard to me. Ive never had to use so much detail in a paper, and now thats like the main focus. I feel like thatll be tough as well. (1,222) 7. Well reviewing the questions one through six, I can conclude that they are all reflecting my experience so far in college. These questions are making me think about my weaknesses and my strengths that Im having. My strengths and weaknesses have connection just by themselves. They make me realize the changes that happen between the transition between high school and college. Theyre making me adapt to my new college atmosphere. If I didnt have the syllabus, I wouldnt be able to really know what this course was about. I guess you can say that these questions all have reflection in common. They really make you think about how the how college life and new changes apply to you. These questions all make you think. Another common thing that all these questions have that connect them are that that make you inquire. 8. As I finish up this mid-term, there are a few questions still in the air. I want to know how much Ill adapt and change by the end of the semester. I would like to say that my inquiry skills will improve greatly by the end of the course. I still question how Ill carry out the rest of this semester. With this whole new different atmosphere I am living in. Its pretty stressful, this new change in study habits, responsibility, living and such. I wonder if I will start to like it more, maybe even better than at home, as I adapt to it more and more. There are a lot of questions I have about myself and how I will do throughout this course, I just cannot grasp them at the time. I am not worried that you wont be able to give me the knowledge I need, I am worried about how I will be able to cope with them though.
