Introduction to PAF
The word PAF nowadays, requires no elaboration. It has become a legendary phenomenon due to its glorious history. It is renowned for its good name both within and outside the country. Aviators of the PAF have carved out history for themselves in the past and are exerting hard to maintain the standards set by their forerunners; rather augmenting them with excellence in future. We hope this brochure will give you some idea of the Pakistan Air force, its selection system and subsequent training. The first thing to be said is that our standards are high, and we insist to apply them. We make no apology for that. We are in the business of selecting the next generation of officers for a service, who must be conversant with the latest technology, ready to defend our motherland in the event of conflict. Those who are selected for the task would be given an expanded and extensive training, leading to a very challenging and demanding job. Not only are they likely to be responsible for sophisticated equipment worth millions of rupees, but also for the security of the country and the well being of their countrymen. Wrong selection on our part would be very costly and may prove fatal to the interest of the nation: hence we cannot take chance for such a grave lapse. Despite this, it is not a part of our policy to discourage or make you nervous or catch you with tricky questions. The test and interviews at PAF I&S Centres / ISSB are carried out in a relaxed and informal way. After all we need to know you as a person. To achieve this objective, we do encourage you to feel at home and think and act naturally. We are confident that you will enjoy the time you spend with us if you come in the right spirit. Whether you are successful or not, you should learn something about todays PAF and people in it, and above all about yourself.

PAKISTAN AIR FORCE Quality is the hallmark of Pakistan Air Force. In order to maintain its traditions of professional excellence, the PAF is quite selective in choosing suitable young candidates to fly, maintain and support its sophisticated aircraft and equipment. Those who are selected and successfully complete PAFs exhaustive and strenuous training can look forward to a rewarding, noble and honorable career. PAF offers a wide variety of these careers to the citizens of Pakistan. Life in the PAF is undoubtedly disciplined and demanding but then, there are many incentives, like handsome salary, accommodation, free medical facilities for self and family, generous leave and air/rail passage at concessional rates. Moreover, the Air Force environment is dynamic because one is always in the company of cheerful, energetic and dedicated colleagues ready to do their best for one another. This privileged camaraderie can only be appreciated by those who serve in this elite force. Pakistan Air Force is comparatively a young service. It was established in 1947 with only a handful of personnel and with scant resources. The PAF has undergone many evolutionary changes in the short span of its history. It has matured rapidly and its pilots have successfully contested numerically superior enemies in the air; both in the sub-continent and elsewhere. Today, it stands as one of the most well organized and well maintained forces in the region. Its command and administrative structures have been refashioned from time to time to keep pace with its expansion and modernization programmes. ORGANIZATION The overall operational and administrative control of the PAF vests in the Chief of the Air Staff who exercises this function through Air Headquarters. He is assisted by Vice Chief of the Air Staff and six Deputy Chiefs of the Air Staff who control and administer the disciplines of Operations, Administration, Training, Engineering, Support and Personnel in the PAF. 03

The flying operations of the Air Force are carried out and supported by a number of operational, training and maintenance Air Bases located all over the country. The respective Base Commanders are responsible for the operational readiness and combat efficiency of their Bases. These operational Bases are placed under three regional Air Commands, viz, Northern, Central and Southern, each commanded by an Air Officer Commanding (AOC) who is responsible to the Chief of the Air Staff. The field command structure is designed to ensure coordination among the various fighting elements of the three services as well as understanding of one anothers role in the defence of the country. Each Base embodies a wellknit community of officers and men who operate and maintain the various weapon systems of the Air Force and is well equipped to cater for all the needs of the personnel deployed there. An Air Base is not only a place of work but a home for its personnel. The Air Defence Command (ADC) maintains a year-round 24 hours surveillance of the national Air Space and controls all Air Defence activities of the PAF. The Air Defence Command exercises the operational control over all the Air Defence elements (Interceptor Fighters, Surface to Air Missiles and Anti Air Craft Guns etc) which are fully integrated with other weapon systems of the PAF to form a cohesive and potent deterrent force. Geographically, the Air Defence of the country is organized on a regional basis for greater efficiency, each region being looked after by a Sector Headquarters. TRAINING SYSTEM The most important peacetime activity of a fighting force is training for war, but this aspect has unique significance for the PAF. The mission of service compels the PAF to train for combat with adversaries whose numerical strength and resources it cannot match. Accordingly, the PAF has traditionally organized its training programmes with a view to achieve maximum utilization of men and material. Its training programmes aim at making up in quality what it lacks in quantity. Theses programmes draw heavily on the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the personnel who are entrusted to shoulder this onerous responsibility and who see to it that they prove equal to the task. The PAF always strives to employ the most scientific and advanced techniques for training its manpower. It trains to outwit, outfight and outshoot the enemy.

PAF ACADEMY RISALPUR The selected candidates proceed to the PAF Academy, Risalpur to fulfill their cherished dream of becoming the future Fighter Pilots, Aeronautical Engineers or other support branches. The PAF Academy is located at Risalpur which is a small town in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. It is situated about 8 Km from Nowshera, across the green bank of Kabul River, on the main road to the beautiful valley of Swat. The legendary Khyber Pass, the gate-way to Central Asian Republics, lies to the north at a distance of about 90 km. PAF Academy comprises of two premier institutions of the PAF, the College of Flying Training and the College of Aeronautical Engineering. Both these institutions are well-equipped with modern workshops, laboratories, libraries, class-rooms and other academic facilities to classify them as distinctive institutions. The vast parade ground, immaculate cadets mess and living-in accommodation presents a spectacle to behold. These institutions have bred generations of Fighter Pilots, Aeronautical engineers and Officers of other branches for the PAF and other friendly countries. COLLEGE OF FLYING TRAINING (CFT) In CFT, Aviation Cadets go through flying/academic training of three years. Over the years, the College has developed a modern, scientific and systematic programme of pilot training. It aims at equipping the aviation cadets with basic flying skills along with sound academic/professional background which eventually leads to the award of B.Sc Degree by Peshawar University. The College has three types of trainer aircraft namely MFI-17 Mushshak, which is being produced under license Pakistan, T-37 a jet trainer of American origin and another jet trainer K-8 a joint venture of Pakistan and China. Training on these aircraft is designed to produce pilots for Pakistan Air Force and friendly countries. Aviation Cadets who successfully complete their flying training on training aircraft are awarded flying wings. The college is also entrusted to conduct regular courses of Engineering, Admin & Special Duties, Education, Logistics, Information Technology, Meteorology, Accounts, Legal Officers and Branch List Permanent Commission. 05

COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING (CAE) The College of Aeronautical Engineering came into being after independence when an acute shortage of technical maintenance officers was felt in the PAF. In order to meet the immediate requirements of the engineering officers, a plan to establish an Aeronautical Engineering College was mooted and speedily implemented. The college was initially established at Korangi Creek in 1965. In 1986, the college was shifted from Korangi Creek to PAF Academy, Risalpur. The Aviation Cadets of Engineering Branch go through 4 years training in the College of Aeronautical Engineering after which they get their BE degree in Aerospace or Avionics disciplines from NUST. At CAE, the Aviation Cadets go through a system of education on the lines of United States Air Force Institute of Technology. The college is known not only for its excellent academic training but also for its well-designed leadership training programmes. Its graduates today lead most of the aerospace related departments of PAF, Pak Army, PIA and other civilian sectors. CADETS WING The most distinguishing feature of a fighting force is its personnels high standard of physical fitness, discipline and leadership qualities. To achieve this objective, PAF strives not only to impart professional/academic knowledge but also to inculcate these qualities in its future commanders. At the PAF Academy, Risalpur, the cadets wing is entrusted with the most important task of developing personal qualities like integrity, courage, determination, initiative and patriotism of officers through elaborate programme of character building. Here, the command and leadership qualities of cadets are brought into sharp focus and assessed individually. Debates, drama and public speaking are encouraged. Para jumping, Skiing, techniques of jungle, desert, sea and snow survival are also added to the list of activities cadets look forward to. THE CADETS MESS The Cadets Mess is the living accommodation of all cadets of PAF Academy. It is a grand complex which is designed to provide facilities of messing, accommodation, recreation and social activities. When a cadet reports at the college, he is provided a dormitory which he shares with three of his course mates. As he progresses and becomes senior, he moves to a twin bedded/independent room where he stays for the remaining period of his training. All possible measures are taken to provide a balanced diet to the cadets so that they maintain good health during their training period. The affairs of the cadets mess are entirely managed and controlled by the officers of the Cadets Wing. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS Cadets are provided with adequate facilities to pursue games and sports of their choice. Field and courts for the following games are available:( a) ( e) ( j) Hockey Squash Fencing (b) (f) (k) Football Athletics Cricket (c) (g) (l) Basketball Riding Swimming (d) (h) (m) Tennis Golf Volley Ball

Officers and trained instructors supervise the cadets sports activities. Bi-annual Inter Squadron Competitions are held in different games. Cadets show great zeal and fervor to win trophies for the prestige of their respective squadrons. The squadron excelling in games and sports is awarded the Championship Trophy. An Academic Trophy is also awarded to the squadron achieving best academic results. All such activities are aimed to engender healthy competition and instill esprit de corps among squadron members. Besides outdoor games, a number of facilities and clubs for indoor activities like Body Building, Table Tennis, Billiards, Snooker, Chess and Drama are also available in the Mess. Additionally, the Academy also provides ample opportunities to inculcate and develop the personal hobbies of cadets. A well-equipped Hobbies Club is housed in an independent building and provides facilities of painting, aeromodelling, para gliding, photography, electronic model designing, wood works and music. 07

LITERARY ACTIVITIES After Dinner Literary Activities (ADLA) is a regular feature of cadets training. It aims at developing the art of public speaking in the cadets. Apart from ADLA sessions, debates, declamation contests and other similar literary activities are also regularly held to develop and broaden the intellectual horizon of the cadets. To increase their general awareness, guest speakers are invited to speak on their subjects of specialization. EDUCATIONAL VISITS Educational visits to industrial enterprises, technical institutes and civil organizations are regularly scheduled in the curriculum of CFT/CAE. The purpose of these visits is to familiarize the Aviation Cadets with scientific and engineering techniques and to apprise them with the kind of technical work being done in Pakistan. STUDENTS COUNSELING A tutor is appointed from the Faculty for each Aviation Cadet of CFT/CAE. He is the local guardian and academic counselor of the cadet. Moreover, a psychologist is also deployed in cadets wing who meets the cadet frequently to discuss his academic performance as well as helps to solve his personal difficulties and problems. CAREER OPPORTUNITY IN THE PAF In the PAF, the career of General Duties Pilot is very exacting and demanding. Everybody cannot come up to its rigorous standards and sometimes Aviation Cadets are withdrawn from flying due to air sickness or lack of flying aptitude. Earlier these suspended cadets were withdrawn from academy and they tended to lose crucial time in adjusting to the life in civil. The PAF has now realized that these stringently selected candidates possess great potential to become assets in the other branches of the PAF like Logistics, IT, Air Defence, Admin & Special Duties, Education and Meteorology. Therefore, the new training scheme now offers a commission in the PAF, even if one fails to make a Fighter Pilot. PAF Academy, Risalpur now ensures that a suspended cadet gets his B.Sc Degree and is offered a commission in either of the above quoted branches. However, they may express their choice of ground branches in order of preference. The Air Headquarters give due consideration to the preferences, indicated by suspended Aviation Cadets, in the allotment of ground branches.

GENERAL DUTIES (PILOT) The candidates who are able to meet the standards of general service training, flying and academics are commissioned as Pilot Officers in the GD(P) Branch of the PAF. The graduation parade, a memorable experience for the Aviation Cadets, marks the end of their training at the Academy. They are now ready to join the Fighter Conversion Units where they further develop their flying skills on more demanding and advanced jet aircraft. After successfully completing the conversion, the budding pilots are taken a step further; through Fighter Conversion Unit (FCU) and Operational Conversion Unit (OCU), where they learn to master the frontline combat aircrafts of the PAF. In these units, the pilots are subjected to most critical and formative stages of training. Here, for the first time, they are taught skills without which they cannot survive, an eagle-eyed ability to search the sky of the enemy, dogfights with simulated enemy aircraft, and the skill to shoot accurately. After achieving the desired standards of proficiency in the fighter and operational conversion phases, the officers are now qualified to join the forntline combat squadrons of the Air Force as young operational pilots. It is in these squadrons that they truly grow into air warriors, a closely knit combat team, getting airborne in their highly lethal supersonic machines to practice air combat maneuvering, weapons delivery, tactical air support to land forces and many other types of wartime flying. In these squadrons, they continue to strive day and night towards higher level of professional skill so that they may remain ready to follow in the glorious footsteps of their predecessors. The profession of a combat pilot in the PAF is challenging and thrilling. The young men/women, we require must possess a high level of intelligence, sound judgment, awareness, alertness, strong nerves, self-confidence and relentless determination to become combat pilots. If you have these qualities, join the PAF and we shall train you to achieve your goal. The complexity of modern air warfare can only be mastered by those who can understand, interpret and aggressively utilize the advantage of sophisticated devices and weapons. We broaden your mental horizon by training you on the best of the equipment using the finest training aids. ENGINEERING BRANCH (CAE) An Engineer in the PAF is no longer a behind-the-scene worker. He is very much in strive with his colleagues to shoulder the combat responsibility. He plays a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the operational efficiency of the Air Force. He leads a team of highly skilled technicians to ensure that all the weapon systems operate to their optimum capacity. A promising engineer will also get ample facilities for higher training abroad and to carry out research and development. The training we impart is the best available and the syllabi are designed to bring out the best in you. Regular Courses The regular courses for the Engineering Branch of PAF are inducted through CAE, PAF Academy, Risalpur. SUSPENDED AVIATION CADETS Suspended and withdrawal cases will be dealt with as follows:(a) The Aviation Cadets suspended / withdrawn from GD (P) / Engg Courses would be absorbed in other branches, in accordance with the policy in vogue or as decided by the CAS regarding the change of branch (b) The trainee officers when relegated at PAF Academy, while on probation, would suffer permanent loss of seniority. (c) The officers suspended / withdrawn from GD(P) / Engg Courses, during the probation period, would be absorbed in other branches in accordance with the policy in vogue or as decided by the CAS regarding the change of branch. (d) An officer shall be liable to have his commission terminated at any time during the probation period if his retention is not considered desirable in any respect, in accordance with Rule 16 of PAF Act Rules 1957. 13

NON GD COURSES (PC & SSC) Engineering Branch (SPSSC/SSC) Candidates holding BE/B.Sc Enginering or higher qualification and Master Degree in respective subject are also inducted in PAF as SPSSC Officers. Such candidates are offered higher ranks and ante-date seniority depending upon their qualifications and experience. The demand of SPSSC Officers is advertised through mass media whenever there is a specific demand for the same. The candidates inducted under this scheme may be offered Permanent/Extended Service Commission subject to their suitability in the PAF. In some of todays aerial battles, the adversaries may never see each other. An Air Defence Officer operates sophisticated radars and acts as the far seeing eyes of a fighter pilot; whom he guides from the ground. The Air Defence Controllers alertness often gives the fighter pilot the edge to come out victorious in aerial battles, a challenge worth meeting indeed. EDUCATION BRANCH (SPSSC) All officers are exposed to multifarious challenges and ever changing demands. PAF CAREERS E-TESTING


E-Testing 1. PAF has introduced e-Testing programme for the selection of officers in various Branches of Pakistan Air Force Initially intelligence and Academic Test are administered through e-Testing; however, we are planning to extend this project to assess the personality of candidates as well. Candidates would undergo e-Testing according to the modern system of selection. The computer literate candidates would have slight edge over the candidates who do not have any exposure to computer.

Procedure of e-Testing 2. When the candidates report to the I & S Centre for the tests, they will find a computer ready for e-Testing. All the instructions will be displayed on the computer screen alongwith some examples. The instruction are as follows: (a) It is an easy and short test to find out how quickly and accurately you can answer a series of simple questions in specified time limit. (b) All questions have five options as A, B, C, D, & E. You are required to click on the most appropriate answer. (c) It is necessary to pass every subject in the Academic Tests. (d) You will be given a separate blank sheet for your rough work. You will submit the same at the end of test to the invigilator. (e) Method to Correct your option:- If you want to correct your answer which you think is the right option, click it which would remove the previous option. After instructions, some examples are displayed on the screen to make you clear about the nature of the tests, so try to understand the examples. After that, actual test would be administered.

FILLING PAF THE CAREERS ANSWER SHEET


In case of non availability of computers. The procedure for filling he answer sheet is as follows:u u u u Extreme care is to be taken in filling out the answer sheet. This sheet should not be folded, stapled or damaged. The rectagles on the sheet are to be filled completely with black 2B or 3B pencil. All the candidates are to bring 2B or 3B pencil and eraser alongwith them or Intelligence and Academic Tests.

Procedure for Filling the Answer Sheet If your Registration Number is 13215, you will blacken the rectangle 1 in first row, 3 in the second row, 2 in the third row, 1 in the fourth row and 5 in the fifth row under the Registration number. Each number or alphabet is to be marked (blackened) on a separate horizontal row. A line must not contain more then one blackened rectangle. For a space between two words, leave a row unmarked. Each answer contains five choices, A B C D & E. Each answer also contains the answer number next to it for each reference. Only one answer is correct. For the answer which you think is correct, blacken out the appropriate rectangle. If you discover that you have blackened an inappropriate rectangle and you want to change it, erase the wrong answer and blacken the correct choice. If you mark more than one rectangle in one answer, it will be read as incorrect by the computer.
