Bsma: WHaTs IT aLL aBOUT?

Hello fellow BSMA students! This is your local reporter Adam Chutek here with another issue of the BSMA Tribune, your quarterly source of fun and information! Now, some of you may ask what this thing we call the Biosciences and Medicine Academy is all about. The BSMA is geared for those who are seeking higher education in both math and science. The academy also provides students with Project Lead the Way courses. These classes focus directly on the broad subject that is bioscience and medicine. Project Lead the Way provides students with educational experiences that will grant them excellent preparedness for the medical field. The Biosciences and Medicine Academy here at Francis Tuttle is not for the faint of heart, as it only offers Pre-AP and AP courses. As my fellow futurehealthcare professionals, I want to wish you good luck in all aspects of your life. Meet your challenges head on, and you just may find how successful you can truly be.

Letter From the Editor

Hey guys! For those of you keeping score at home, this is our third installation of the BSMA Tribune. In this newsletter, well give you a bit of a heads up on HOSA NLC (National Leadership Conference) by Abigail Jebaraj, your Oklahoma HOSA State President. National President-Elect David Kelly will also enlighten us as to our planned HOSA Week activities. Aamr Hasanjee, Oklahoma HOSA Social Chairman, is also going to inform us about a latebreaking innovation known as CatheterBased Renal Denervation. I will also be talking about a new technology known as SGLT2 Inhibitors which may be the future of diabetic treatment.

Hosa NLC
As the excitement of
State Leadership Conference approaches, and you put the finishing touches on your competitive event, you may be wondering what exactly National Leadership Conference is and why everyone is so excited about it. All of the students who have attended before are pushing themselves to the limit, working for that first place and free ticket to Orlando. But why? Obviously, you get to take your competitive event to the next level by competing against the top students in the country. What better setting to do so than by spending several days with your academy friends and awesome teachers in beautiful Florida? Also, you will get the opportunity to go to the Disney. On average, students get about two halfdays to explore all Disney World has to offer. There will be some additional time to explore Downtown Disney, which is Disney Worlds free admittance shopping complex. HOSA members from all over the nation attend NLC, even from states like Hawaii, so be sure to mingle and get to know other members! One way to meet other members is by trading Oklahoma HOSA pins with other states pins. Its pretty easy to get caught up in, trust me. Finally, there are three exciting sessions that all of the members

attend. The opening session will excite and motivate you as you prepare to compete at the national level. The recognition session is a great time to cheer on your state recognition winners. And at last, you will attend the awards session. It can be nerve-wracking, but the whole atmosphere of the room is so electrifying that a loss doesnt feel like a loss and a win is that much more exciting. Whether you place in your event or not at NLC, you will still be able to leave with amazing memories and even with some new friends. So, are you ready to show your stuff and win at SLC? I thought so!

Plans for HOsa week by David Kelly

Thinking of becoming more
involved in HOSA but not sure what to do about it? Welcome to HOSA Week. HOSA Week is the epitome of fun and fundraising for HOSA chapters. Traditionally held during the first full week in November, HOSA Week was opened up for any week by National HOSA last year. The BSMA PM chapter plans to celebrate HOSA Week in March. Potential activities include dress up days, fundraising during lunch and after school, and innovative activities that bring the BSMA community together to raise awareness about HOSA, health professions, and especially JDRF. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is this years HOSA National Service Project recipient, and is working to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. If our chapter receives a national commendation for our work during HOSA Week, we will be recognized at this years National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, in front of over 7,000 HOSA members. How do you think we can raise money? Contact Callie Osmus, HOSA Week Chairperson for our chapter, to learn more, suggest an idea, or get involved. HOSA week is coming. Are YOU ready?

sGLT2 InHIBITOrs: a CUre fOr dIaBeTes? by Adam Chutek

Did you know that, in the
United States alone, 26 million people are living with diabetes? Thats a whopping 8.3% of our total population! Diabetes, as I am sure you already know from your experience in the BSMA, is a serious medical defect in which the body is unable to convert glucose into energy for the body to use. This problem results from a malfunction of insulin, the hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. Scientists have long since noticed the need for a more effective treatment of diabetes. In the past year, they have discovered their solution: SGLT2 Inhibitors. SodiumGlucose Co-Transporter 2 Protein Inhibitors (SGLT2 Inhibitors) work in a radical new way to lower blood glucose levels by ridding the body of excess glucose via urination. The kidneys, the organs responsible for the filtration of urine, naturally retain as much glucose from the urine as possible. All of the glucose that the kidneys retain, the body then reabsorbs back into the bloodstream. This function of the kidneys, if overridden, could potentially be lifesaving for those with diabetes. So what is different about SGLT2 Inhibitors? What sets them apart from previous diabetic treatments? Well, as anyone with diabetes would know, keeping up with daily medications can be a real hassle. With the addition of SGLT2 Inhibitors, this hassle is eliminated. The medication is only taken once daily, thereby eliminating the daily struggle that is diabetes.

Catheter-Based Renal Denervation by Aamr Hasanjee

Hypertension is a common disorder known in lay terms as high blood pressure. Upon reaching blood pressure levels of 140/90mmHg or higher, patients are diagnosed with hypertension. One third of the U.S. population suffers from hypertension, a condition that increases risk of heart attacks, kidney failure, and strokes. Up until recently, hypertension has been easily treated with a daily drug regimen and a healthy lifestyle adjustment. A new threat has arisen, however, in the past few years: resistant hypertension. This new version of hypertension is extremely hard to treat and the blood pressure remains high, until recently. Debuting at the 2011 Medical Innovation Summit, catheter-based renal denervation promises to be one the most effective treatments for resistant hypertension. The 40-minute procedure involves the careful insertion of a catheter-based probe that delivers low-power radio frequency that disrupts the nearby sympathetic nerves. These nerves play an important role in regulating blood pressure levels. The disruption of these nerves cause a significant drop in blood pressure. In a recent study, 39% of patients with resistant hypertension who were treated with catheter-based renal denervation returned to normal blood pressure levels. These effects even lasted for four years in most patients. Catheter-based renal denervation is an innovative medical intervention that can change the lives of thousands of patients around the globe.
