My Fellow Anglers & Friends, February has been exciting and a very busy month with the Chinese New Year celebrations and Valentines. Suddenly Kuala Lumpur felt emptyafter the balik kampong exodus. I took the opportunity to drive around the city and soak up the changes. Whilst driving around aimlessly in KL city I chance upon an old supercar of which instantly reminded me of a reel that I have seen last year. With that in mind I decided to share with you some of the reels that caught my attention in 2012 and early 2013 in this issue under a new section called Hot & Spicy. The Asian Anglers growth has been phenomenal and I take this opportunity, on behalf of The Asian Angler, to thank you for your support. It has been a pleasure meeting up with readers for tea and chat. Makes the hard work fun. Also thank you for your emails of encouragement and feedback. Have fun and enjoy this issue. Thank you and have a superb month ahead. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief Email: phil@theasianangler.com

Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner

By Philemon Foo

heavy duty Penn Spinfisher V. This time we put the Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner to task. For those who do not know what a Live Liner reel is, it is actually a spinning reel more appropriately used for fishing with live baits. The more popular term used is actually Bait Runner.

Last issue we test drove the

A Bait Runner or in this case a Live Liner reel is a spinning reel than comes with a secondary drag other than the main drag. The secondary drag is lighter than the main drag and is used to allow the brute that took the bait to swim freely, giving it time to swallow the bait without feeling that something is amiss. Some anglers also call them dual drag system reels.

10

11

Turning off the secondary drag by turning the reel handle or by simply switching off the switch of the Live Liner automatically engages the main drag of which signals the beginning of the battle between the brute and angler.

Power Packed
The Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner, like its siblings the Spinfisher V is a powerhouse of a reel. It packs good amounts of muscles and cranking power to subdue the brutes.

12

13

It also comes with the famed Penn Slammer Sealed Drag System (main drag), a powerful drag system that is sealed and protected from the elements. This gives the Spinfisher V Live Liner a more consistent drag during the battle.

Live Liner Smoothness

The one difference between the Spinfisher V and the Spinfisher V Live Liner is the Live Liner Drag itself. Like all drag system, smoothness is very important. It is one of the components that could make or break the fight.

14

15

I had the opportunity to test out the Live Liner drag at my favourite testing ground in Rawang. I used a live tilapia as bait with the Live Liner drag turned on. After a short wait the line from my spool started shooting out. The smooth Live Liner drag was doing its work well. I picked up my rod, gave it about two and a half seconds before turning of the reel handle and thus engaging the main drag. I was onto a fight with an exotic brute. Getting drenched (it was pouring cats and dogs) and I meant really drenched I had to subdue the brute as fast as I can. I turned the drag up a notch and felt instantly the increased resistance that the drag is putting on the fish. It wasnt a long fight and brute surrendered knowing that it couldnt have out fought the power of the Spinfisher V Live Liner, and my tired arms.

16

17

Sturdy Construction
The Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner is one very sturdy reel that gave me the extra confidence (knowing I had 30lb braid on helped as well) to put muscle against muscle. The reel didnt even flex throughout the fight or at least I didnt feel a hint of flex even if it did.

18

19

Consistent Drag
The Penn Slammer Sealed Drag System felt smooth and consistent even under the rain. We fished for three hours of which two of them were crazy wet and throughout the wet rainy conditions, the drag held its worth.

More Abuse
You may have come across reels that are sadist in nature. With that I mean, they keep asking for more. They just want to be tortured and they smile while they are being tortured. There are not many reels like that around but this is definitely one of them. I intend to put it through harder fishing and perhaps from there we can see how far it will really go.

20

21

FEATURES
New thicker heavy duty aluminum bail wire adds strength and durability 5 Shielded stainless steel bearing system Infinite anti-reverse (back up ratchet on 7500-10500 sizes Friction trip ramp prevents premature bail trip when casting Stainless steel mainshaft and alloy main gear Enhanced gear ratios on smaller sizes Live Liner Drag System

My Thoughts
This is a reel that could very well go on even when the angler has had enough surrendering with aching arms and a bruised abdomen. If you are going for some big game fishing, this will definitely be a great reel to have.

Quantum Hayai Pitch Rod

By Philemon Foo

The fishing rod, a device invented

to make fishing more fun. Technology has played a part in turning the simple fishing rod into a technically advanced device engineered with different materials of which impacts the rods and fishing directly. Here is the Quantum Hayai Pitch rod that I paired with the Quantum EXO PT Spinning reel (February 2013 Test Drive) and used it against the red-tailed monsters of the Exotic Pond in Rawang, Selangor. The Quantum Hayai Pitch was a pleasant surprise.

26

27

Hey good Lookin

One look at the Quantum Hayai Pitch and you instantly get a whiff of an island nation in East Asia somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Yes, with that I meant Japan. Japanese designers have this ability to conjure good looking rods that may seem extreme to some, but a work of art to others.

28

29

The Quantum Hayai Pitch comes with a rear cork handle that is split in between with a piece of metal tube with holes that highlights the Quantum brand. The end of the handle, the section just before the rubber stopper, is adorned with carbon fibre and metal washers.

30

31

The fore handle is EVA with a metal washer giving it a kind of a mixed up look and it works. The contoured fore EVA handle is made with high quality EVA which gives the Quantum Hayai Pitch its quality feel.

32

33

Fuji Components
The rod comes with Fuji components and one of them is the reel seat of which also has holes in it of which reduces some weight and at the same time makes the rod look good. Guides are also Fuji with gun-smoke colored frames that goes well with the matt colored rod blank.

Power In The Blank

The blank of the rod is very important. You can have all the best components but if the blank is not good, everything else fails. The Quantum Hayai Pitch comes with a good high modulus carbon blank of which is strong and also very sensitive. Playing soft-plastics I could easily feel the jig-head searching the bottom of the pond.

34

35

The rod tip is also well engineered. It helps cast out lures and baits, even lighter lures with relative ease. When it comes to playing the fish, the tip springs back into action again. I do literarily mean springing back as the tip helps to play the fish as well.

Balancing Of Weight
Having more metal components at the butt section increases the weight of the rod and one would ask why Quantum did so. Surely the weight factor, less being more (if you know what I mean), is more important than cosmetic factors. Well, the way I see it, a balance rod is more important than one that is light but unbalanced.

36

37

Putting on the reel and dropping the rod to a horizontal position answers this question. Holding the rod in an upright position with or without the reel makes the rod feel heavy. Dropping it to the horizontal position makes it feel tip heavy (even with metal washers). Adding the Quantum EXO reel to the rod balances the rod nicely.

39

My Thoughts
If you are looking for a good rod and have a budget to match, the Quantum Hayai Pitch is one to consider.

Abu Garcia Tournament Rod

By Philemon Foo

Test Drives

The Abu Garcia Tournament rod series have been a strong hold of the Abu Garcia brand here in Asia. It is one of those rods that anglers just cannot have enough of. I have used quite a few of them before and recently had the opportunity to use the latest one.

Mafia And Not Yakuza

The new Abu Garcia Tournament rod looks good and modest. Not too flashy and shouty but with a more subtle mature kind of look. If it were to be a gangster, it would be the sleek Italian Mafia in black suit, dark glasses, and maybe a shiny earring, and not the funky tattooed Japanese Yakuza.

44

45

It comes with high quality fore and rear EVA grips of which feels good in the hands of the angler. No flashy metal washers or carbon fibre components of which is a good thing; as not having those things help bring the cost of the rod down making it more affordable to more anglers.

Deceiving In A good Way

When I first picked up the Abu Garcia Tournament spinning rod I was wondering to myself if there had made a mistake. I wanted a rod that could cast well and handle brutes, a gangster but more of the runner not the bouncer. I was handed what looked like a boat rod but with a short, casting handle, the bouncer.

46

47

I looked at it a while and decided to give it a try. The reason I wasnt sure is because I was about to fish in a place where I had to cast little 3 inch live baits and battle brutes like groupers and mangrove jacks that are relatively big in size. A boat rod will not be able to cast light baits well and a lighter rod may not be able to handle the brutes (obstacles in the form of other anglers). Anyway, I did use the rod and was pleasantly surprised.

Casting Abilities
We fished at a saltwater paypond in Klang, a pond that I have not fished at in years. We were using mullets as live baits. I paired the Abu Garcia Tournament rod to the Penn Spinfisher V Live Liner reel of which had 30lb monofilament lines in it.

48

49

Imagine this rig; 30lb monofilament lines, 3 inch mullet, and a small swivel linking the mainline to the leader. No sinkers or split shots to aid with casting. I was rather worried. All my worries came to an end the moment I made the cast and saw the little mullet gliding towards the middle of the pond, where the fish cages are located. A deceiving rod indeed.

Muscles & More Muscles

The rod had power like that of a bodybuilders arm. The 24 ton graphite blank is indeed powerful and I always love a tip that would help me to play and control the fish. I was on to a brute and the power of this Tournament rod was what I needed. I managed to pull the brute away from the water wheel with much ease and confidence.

50

51

In all honesty, I lost the fish to some unseen underwater structures. That was due to me being over confident and thus allowing the fish to make a last dash towards some underwater structures.

52

53

Conclusion
I would say that the Abu Garcia Tournament rod is a value for money, no frills rod. If you are looking for a rod that is good and will not burn a hole in your pocket, the Abu Garcia Tournament is one rod that I recommend you consider.

Fishing Reels Are Getting Hotter

With anglers wanting better

looking reels, lighter reels, and if possible made by Martian engineers kind of reels, the humble fishing reel is not humble anymore. There is beauty in maturity and the Revo MGX flaunts this by taking mature designs and giving it elegance, like what Volkswagen did to their legendary and iconic Beetle. The Revo MGX fits into the role of the secret agent like James Bond double O seven; unassuming, mature, and elegant. If the Helios Spinning reminds
you of the Green Hornet, this Helios low profile baitcasting reel confirms it. If both Reid and Kato (The Green Hornet and his side kick) were to be anglers, the Helios would be their signature reel. The Helios low profile baitcasting reel is a sleek looking mean machine with green highlights on its spool and star-drag, matt black body (side plates), and a carbon fibre handle stem with EVA handles. New Okuma Trio baitfeeder Spinning Reel

This here is a reel that was probably designed
by the same designer that designed the Lamborghini Reventon and or the Lamborghini Aventador. It is difficult to actually find a sporty looking spinning reel but the New Trio is close. The design of the new Trio seems to have gotten some of its cues from the esteemed Apache assault helicopter (The Lamborghini Reventon got its cue from the Stealth fighter F-117). It is adorned with carbon fibre body and spool, and what is known as Crossover Construction Technology (Okumas proprietary) of which utilizes lightweight graphite that is bolstered with solid aluminium in critical areas.

Green Lantern. The Quick Toxic RD is one D.A.M reel (forgive pun) that could drive D.A.M into the future with fresher and better designs. This reel caught my attention although I must clarify that it is not the best looking of the lot, but because D.A.M has not been up there battling at the design smack down. I do like its design with the use of carbon fibre making the Quick Toxic RD a sportier. In the world of cars, the Quick Toxic RD would have been a Volkswagen Golf with standard bodykit. Not as sexy as the thoroughbreds but will give one heck of a run. Germans being Germans, technology and engineering are their strong points both of which can be found in the Quick Toxic RD.

I am not sure if the designers really did use cues from shoes but I do know that the Accurist looks pretty darn good. The monster of all spinning reels. Americans tend to love monsters and when they set out to create the ultimate monster reel, they came out with the Torque. Anglers who have tested the Torque claim that this reel turns most monster fishes into sissy softies. One comment I remember well is this: have you ever seen a GT (Giant Trevally) on a jetski? That is the power of the Penn Torque and that is why I like it.

Pflueger Patriarch
One of the spinning reels that have captivated me for a long time is the Pflueger Patriarch. It could very well be the culprit that started the weight lost competition amongst reel brands.

When I first laid eyes on the Patriarch it was floating on air tied to a balloon. My mouth automatically uttered, What the heck and then it came my turn to have a closer look and feel. It was love at first sight. It was the sexiest spinning reel at that time with carbon fibre being used here and there. I was amazed.

I have since had the opportunity to use it and have landed tomans (giant snakeheads, sebaraus (Hampala macrolepidota), and the Amazon red tail catfish on it without much fuss. Of course monster fishes are not in its sight. It does have its limits but for most of my fishing, it performed superbly well. I miss the Patriarch.

ed is the Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG. It is a good looking reel but I will not rank it amongst the best lookers. Only when it comes to performance, the Aldebaran BFS shows off its talents. It turns into this graceful dancer, with close to zero mistakes, and smooth silky flows. I have likened the Aldebaran BFS XG to the Audi A8 and the Beemer 7 Series (in the January 2013 issue); expensive, quiet performer and smooth. It is after all a reel for finesse fishing and casting small lures of which it does extremely well.

The new Daiwa Exist is one reel that gives me a mixed reaction. It is one of those reels with a design that could keep my up for days just looking at it but color wise, at least to me, it is not all there. It is like a Ferrari in matt dull grey color of which is nice design wise but to look at for long periods of time would be another matter. However, whats lava hot is the technology inside. Imagine opening the bonnet of the dull matt grey Ferrari to see this glowing nuclear powered cylinder surrounded by a carbon fibre tubes leading to an engine that came from the USS Enterprise in Star Trek. How lightweight can a reel go? Here; three cheers to ZAION, a distortion proof material that is ultra-lightweight. There is also the distortion proof AIR rotor that has been on a diet and managed to lose some 15% of weight. Even the AIR spool is lighter. Daiwa claims that ZAION is lighter than magnesium. I honestly do not know but who cares. The word ZAION is cool enough to make this reel lava hot.

The T3 SV at an angle has very similar design cues to this fast road munching car. With matt black body and orangey gold color, the T3 SV surely had el Diablo in its sight. Whatever it is, the T3 Air is Daiwas answer to an incredible looking finesse bait casting reel. Fishing Lines: Monofilament
By Philemon Foo

There are many things that have an

effect on your fishing. One of them is the fishing line that you are using. It is not just about break strength and how thick or thin lines are, there is so much more to lines that affect your fishing.

Important? How Important...

Well, for starters, what is the main link between you and the fish? Oh yes, that would be your fishing line. If it breaks you lose the fish. If it holds, you land the fish. That is how important your fishing lines are. It is the main link between the fish and you. Not only does your fishing line determine whether or not you land the fish, it also plays a role in the effectiveness of your fishing. To be better at our sport, it is very important to understand the different characteristics of fishing lines and how they affect our fishing.
134

Monofilament the most widely used fishing line in todays fishing.

135

Types Of Lines
There are various types of fishing lines in the market such as monofilament lines, braided lines, fused lines, PE lines, fluorocarbon lines, uni-filament lines, etc. All these lines have their own characteristics.

Monofilament Line
Let us begin with the monofilament line, one of the most widely used lines in the world. Monofilament lines are made of a single strand of plastic and in different colors. They are used by anglers for all types of fishing from saltwater to freshwater fishing.

What makes monofilament lines so attractive?

Well, they are the cheapest lines to produce and thus they also come with a lower price tag. Almost every angler use monofilament lines either as both main lines and leader lines, or leader lines; braided line users also use monofilament lines are leaders.

136

137

All types of fishing lines have their own characteristics although these days, the lines are blurred. The type of fishing that you do should be one of the factors that determines which type of line to use.

138

139

Characteristics Of: Monofilament Lines Stretch / Shock Absorption

Monofilament lines are known to have this shock absorption quality also known as stretch. Stretch is an advantage as it absorbs the shock of the sudden pull of the fish thus saving your line as well as Stretch is also a disadvantage as it makes the line less sensitive. Another problem with stretch is that if you have a lot of line out, setting the hook could be a problem especially if the fish has a tough jaw that is difficult for the hook to penetrate. Stretch weakens the force of the strike. These days there are monofilament lines that have very little stretch and thus making them the favourite lines of many anglers. One such line is the Berkley XL Armor.

140

141

Silent Line
All fishing lines make some kind of a sound underwater from a low hum to a sharp sound. These sounds are seldom heard by us anglers but underwater they create waves of which the fishes pickup. These sounds can be heard by anglers as well especially when you have your line out on a windy day. It could be a humming or a whistling sound depending on the type of line as well as diameter of line that you are using. Monofilament lines are one of the quieter lines in the market (not including fluorocarbon). This is one reason why some anglers say that monofilament lines catch more fish as compared to super-lines. They are not wrong nor are they absolutely right. Perhaps super-lines may not be the best or rather most appropriate line for their type fishing.

142

143

Lower Visibility
As compared to super-lines, monofilament lines are less visible under water especially those with low glare also known as lower refractive index. The lowest being the fluorocarbon lines, of which has a similar refractive index to that of water. This means that monofilament lines would be less spooky to timid fishes.

Better Abrasion Resistance

When it comes to abrasion resistance, monofilament lines win hands down. They are better at handling resistance and that is why one of the mainstay materials for leader lines.

Absorbs Water
Monofilament lines absorb water and thus they become heavier the longer you fish. Having heavier lines mean reduced casting distances. The absorption of water also changes the quality of the line and that would affect knot strength, line strength, and sensitivity.

144

145

High Memory
Having high memory is great if it is a hard disk but for line, not so. Memory has been a problem with monofilament lines for the longest time. However, newer monofilament lines seem to be addressing this problem. High memory means that the line retains it shape. An example would be how these lines curl when they have been sitting in a spool for some time. Spinning reel users that frequently use monofilament lines almost always encounter this issue. Having curly lines comes with some problem as well such as reduced casting distance, entanglement of line to parts of the reel or rod, further reduced sensitivity especially on low weighted sinkers (due to additional line slack), and they look awful.

146

147

Bigger Diameter
Monofilament lines are thicker (bigger diameter) than super lines. This means that they have higher resistance to air, water currents, etc. They will also take up more space in your spool and knots will be larger in size.

Ideal Usage
No doubt that monofilament lines can be used for all types of fishing. Many of us have been doing so for years. However, they are best suited or rather most appropriately suited for certain types of fishing and not all types. They are best suited for bottom fishing since they are amongst the quieter lines and they are less visible.

Payung Guesthouse, Cherating

All by Queen? We tend to want it all as the songs title suggests but most of the time we just cannot.

Have you heard this song before, I Want It

Here is a place where you can almost have it all. A little village like guesthouse in a place called Cherating, located in the Kuantan (State of Pahang). This place is called Payung Guesthouse.

Payung Guesthouse Reception

152 153

Almost Having It All

Here is a place where you can bring your family for a vacation, enjoy good food, enjoy the beach, and indulge in some fishing. Best of all, you can do all these without burning a hole in your pocket. As far as fishing is concerned, you can cast your bait or lure into the sea or you could cast them into the river. How nice is that.

Journey To Cherating
It only takes about two and a half hours to get there from Kuala Lumpur and the drive is not too stressful. This journey will take you through the Titiwangsa Mountain Range via one of Malaysias most haunted highways; Karak Highway, of which would probably be the most stressful part of your drive, and the rest is a long straight highway to the east coast, exiting just after Kuantan, closer to Cherating.

154

155

The Payung Village

I call this place the Payung Village because it is actually built in a way that resembles a Malaysian village. Each chalet is built to look and feel like a local kampong house. From the outside, the area looks like a natural paradise kind of a resort (not really nature resort). Walking through the front steps and you will find yourself in a little kampong (village). The difference would probably be that your neighbours are tourist from other parts of the world. Checking in was fast and within minutes we were in our own little kampong house (chalet). Our chalet is fully air-conditioned, has a television, built in bathroom and toilet, and a kitchen plus dining area.

156

157

To those with sensitive noses, the first thing to do when you get into your chalet is to slowly remove the mosquito netting that is above the bed and place it somewhere that you will have no contact with for the duration of your stay. The dust from the mosquito netting landed me in hospital with a lung infection.

158

159

Dont get me wrong, the chalet is actually quite clean. Anyway, it is a low budget, basic type of accommodation, so dont expect standards to be like those of the Hilton or Ritz Carlton.

Activities For The Family

There is nothing much to do within the guesthouse compound thus you will most likely be spending more time at the beach building sandcastles, indulging in sea sports activities, doing some beach fishing, going on a mangrove tour or perhaps driving to nearby towns such as Kemaman or Kuantan during the day.

160

161

Kitchen and dining area.

162

163

Another place of visit that is great for families would be the Turtle Sanctuary that is situated right outside Club Med Cherating, of which is some 10 minutes drive away from the Payung Guesthouse. Entrance is free but I do suggest that you place a couple of Ringgits into the collection box in support of their efforts. At night you can go on a firefly watching excursion on the river by boat, party at the beach bars, or just sit outside your chalet and chill for a bit. We were there on Christmas and there was this party going one with fireworks at a nearby resort.

164

165

Wetting Your Lines

Well, for us anglers you could either fish off the beach if you decide to do some surfcasting, or fish in the river. Cherating beach is about five minutes walk from the guesthouse. You could drive to the beach areas nearby the Turtle Sanctuary to do some fishing. There is a river right behind the guest house where you could do some fishing. There is a small narrow wooden jetty at the back of the guesthouse and you could fish from there. The other option is to speak to the resort operator on rental of boat to do some fishing.

166

167

Rating Payung Guesthouse

In my opinion, the Payung Guesthouse is a low budget, no frills place of accommodation. It is not the best guesthouse I have stayed it not is it the worse. If I should rate it from 1 to 10, I would give the Payung Guesthouse a 6.5. Why a 6.5? It meets all my basic needs. It is air-conditioned and that is something that I need. It is cosy and the environment is nice with chickens running, birds and butterflies flying about. It also meets my need to fish. My only complains would be the dusty mosquito netting, leaky toilet sink, and flat pillows.

168

169

Things To Bring
Mosquito repellent is a must. The compound around the guesthouse and the jetty at the river is also home to mosquitoes. Water spray to spray a light layer of mist onto the mosquito netting before removing it. This ensures that only a very small amounts of dust escapes. Your own pillow if you are unable to sleep on flattened pillows. Beach wears and beach toys for your kids. Suntan lotion as the sun can get really hot. Light fishing gear for river fishing. My recommendation would be a bottom fishing set if you are fishing from the jetty. A casting set would only make sense if you are fishing from a boat. Beach casting or surfcasting equipment if you intend to fish from the beach.

Food Wise
For seafood lovers, Cherating is indeed a paradise. There are a few seafood restaurants within the Cherating area. But if you are on a budget and would prefer a simple meal there is a place that is a few minutes walk from the guesthouse. At the entrance of the guest house, cross the road, and walk right. Walk till you reach the gerai-gerai makan (small food stalls) just before the parking lot. The corner shop just before the parking lot serves good ikan bakar tiga rasa (three taste barbeque fish). Chilli lovers would love it. On your next holiday you could give the Payung Guesthouse a try. Oh yes, do make bookings in advance as the place is almost always full (limited chalets).

Advanced Baitcasting Part III

By Philemon Foo
glers, picking up new skills is very important. Have you ever been in a situation where you see the fish, want to cast to it, but do not do so because something or someone is in your way? Learning different casting techniques will help you in situations as such. Not only does it help you cast, it also helps you catch more fish. The more skills you have the better your chances of catching fish. Last issue we did the side cast, a cast that is done from the side of your casting hand or dominant fishing hand. Now let us look at the backhand cast of which is the total opposite of the side cast.

Skill Enhancers

As we journey through life as an-

174

175

I am assuming that you are already an above average user of the baitcasting reel and thus will not go into the basic details here. For basic details please refer to earlier issues of The Asian Angler.

Backhand Cast
If the side cast simple means casting from the side of which your hand holds the rod, backhand cast being the opposite, means doing the cast from the opposite site of the hand that holds the rod. It is like taking a backhand shot in badminton or making a backhand serve in badminton. Say for example you are right handed and you hold your fishing rod in your right hand. Doing a backhand cast simple means that you do a cast from your left.

176

177

The Mechanics Of The Backhand Cast

In this article I will assume that you are right handed and that you are holding the rod in your right hand. Imagine doing a backhand serve in badminton. Step 1 Adjust the brakes and spool control to a setting that you are comfortable with. Step 2 Hold the rod as if you are holding a badminton racket and move it to a similar position as if it were a badminton racket and you are preparing to do a backhand serve. This simply means that your rod is crosses your body with the tip pointing to the left. See picture on the left.

178

179

Step 3 Practise this over and over: Using your wrist, draw the letter C with your rod. Do not release the line and keep your spool locked. Keep doing the letter C using your wrist and not your entire arm. Feel the force of the casting plug as it wants to shoot out due to inertia. Keep doing this and soon you will be able to catch the timing of release. Step 4 As in Step 3, draw the letter C with your rod but this time release the line allowing the rod tip to flick the lure or casting plug out. If it goes too high, you will have to release the line sooner. If it goes too low, you will have to release the line later. Step 5 Reel in your casting plug and try again. Practise these few steps over and over again until it becomes second nature to you. As you get better, slowly loosen the spool and brakes to achieve better distance.

180

181

Give it a try and if you are still unable to do so, send me an email at phil@theasianangler.com and I will see how best to help you. Remember, practise, practise, practise.

Sporting Fishes

Haruan: Channa Striata (Striped Snakehead)

By Philemon Foo

When the Americans got wind of a Fran-

kenfish terrorizing farm stocks, and other small animals that got the country into panic mode, they were faced with a snakehead that they aptly named Fishzilla, of which is a very close relative to the striped snakehead. Probably one of the most fished predators here, the haruan or Striped Snakehead is one fish that can live out of water and crawl from one body of water to another. They have been seen crossing roads, fields, muddy tracks, and also on forest route towards grandmas house to eat the wolf before Little Red Riding Hood got there.

184

185

No, not really. Yes, this fish is an air breather and have indeed been seen crossing roads, fields, and muddy tracks. I have seen this personally; that is one of the ways they migrate from one pocket of water to another. However, they are not known to pose any form of danger to livestock or farm animals, farmers, and sheriffs with dogs. Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf are in no danger of the Striped Snakehead. The average size these days are about 500g to about 2kg. Larger specimens of 3 to 3.5kg have been caught but not often. There are larger specimens but they are almost never caught or seen these days.

Just look at its head, no wonder the Americans thought they saw a monster.

186

187

Palate
Haruans are meat eaters (carnivorous) and they would wait in ambush and hunt for other fishes as well as frogs, lizards, crustaceans, etc. They have also been caught on insects such as grasshoppers and crickets, as well as the wriggly earth worm.

Territorial Loners
Haruans are generally loners and would attack to protect their territory. However, when it comes time to spawn (which is frequent), the solitary loner goes in search of a mate and soon both become proud parents to a hundred or more young little red babies. Both parents would then guard their young attacking intruders or predators that lurk in for a meal.

188

189

A Place To Call Home

Haruans can be found in freshwater streams, lakes, ponds, rivers, swamps, paddy fields, as well as in slightly saline and or brackish waters. They prefer weeds and underwater vegetations but they have been caught in open water as well.

190

191

Haruans burrow in mud during the very dry seasons and can live in such conditions as long as the mud remains damp. This has been a frustration to commercial pond owners who farm fish for the restaurant trade. I have seen ponds emptied and dried by fish farmers to rid their ponds of unwanted predator fishes such as the haruan. When they refill their ponds with water (which could be a month or more later) the haruan population would magically return.

192

193

Fishing The Haruan

Haruans can be caught on a variety of baits and lures. They are not as shy as some predators are or as some say, lacking in quality education. The most popular bait for haruan would be frogs (about 2 to 2.5 inches) followed by live fish such as tilapia. My choice of baits would be soft baits (rigged weedless), spoons (with and without trailers), and spinners, all of which have been very successful in catching the haruan. Being air breathers, haruans have got no choice but to surface for air. One of the ways of catching them would be to cast your lure or bait to them when you see them rise. If there are no rises, the next best thing will be to fan the area with your lure or bait. Bottom fishing works as well for the more relaxed angler. Haruans do hunt for food such as live fish, certain insects, prawns, etc.

194

195

Recommended Tackle
Rods: Medium action casting or spinning. For the extreme angler a medium light action rod will be fun and definitely a challenge. There are places that warrant the use of heavy rods too depending on the type of the pond or lake. Reels Spinning: Sizes 1000 to 2000 will be good enough. Reels Baitcasting : Low profile low speed. Lines: 10lb to 15lb braided (monofilaments can be used too but I prefer braids) in clearer waters. In waters with dense vegetation and snags, higher poundage of 25lb to higher can be used. Leader Lines: 20lb to 25lb fluorocarbon. Spoons: Various types and colors. The cicada spoon has been one of my favourites. Spinners : Various types and colors, but my favourite color would be a silver spinner with black skirts. Lures : Crankbaits, minnows, etc. There you have it. Fishing for haruan is like hunting and is an adventure in its own way. Do email me at phil@theasianangler.com should you need more information about fishing them.

Fishy Tales
Going Ultra Light In Malim Nawar
By Text & Photos By Guvnor Lures By Guvnors Gears

I had a weeks worth of work in Malim Nawar, a small quiet town

in between Tapah and Gopeng. The place is filled with old mining ponds; such an opportunity to fish daily after work was just too good to pass up.

The area is nearby hot peacock bass spots such as Air Kuning, Clearwater Sanctuary and Tg. Tualang where anglers go do battle with good size of peacock bass.

198

199

Ok the title is a little misleading, I must admit that I was trying for a prized catch but the fish had other ideas. Good thing I had my ultralight set as backup and that saved me from the dreaded mangkor! (empty handed). You can find old mining ponds at almost every turn. Some have been claimed and fenced with barbed wire, but many can be accessed by anyone hoping for a catch or two.

The Smith Panish lure is one of the firm favourites of local PB hunters

200

201

I was lucky to have a local guide, abang (brother) Ibrahim, a cousin of a friend, to show us the good spots. Without which, Id probably just try my luck at any pond that I see. Frankly speaking, just stabbing in the dark at all the mining ponds available would have taken me ages to find a decent spot.

It was a case of casting every day after work. A quick change of clothes, a quick call to abang Ibrahim, grabbing our rods, and heading off to his secret spots.

Fish can be funny with their mood swings, for when they shut off; there is really not much you can do. However, the general rule is to always try to scale down your tackle whenever the fish are finicky and try to tempt them on lighter lines and smaller lures.

Catching Ikan Patung & Temperas on small streams with worms is great fun!

210

With the big boys being unimpressed with my presentation of the favourite traditional topwater lures such as Megabass DogX, Jackall Mudsucker and Lucky Craft Sammy, I scaled everything down.

212

213

It was fun trying out my collection of small lures, many of which have been sitting idly in my tackle box for many years now. I happily found that other traditional lures such as Lucky Craft Wander and Smith Panish still delivered the goods, although the sizes of the catches were nothing to shout about. Some small spoons and tiny pencil-baits also fared very well with the cichlids.

A Knot A Month
Sponsored by Penn Fishing Tying good knots is one of the most important things that any angler must learn. Certain knots should not be used on braided lines as braided lines are known to cut or damage themselves. Certain types of fishing requires thicker lines and yet smaller knots. There are knots for connecting lines to lines. There are knots for connecting lines to hooks. There are knots connecting lines to spool. There are knots everywhere in fishing. While there are many knots that you could use, you will probably stick to your favourites. Anyway, it is good to learn all of them. For this issue we will show you one of the simpler but effective knots, the Palomar Knot.

An Initiative By Penn

The Blood Knot

The Blood Knot is a great choice for splicing two lines of similar diameter. Ideal for attaching leader lines such as fluorocarbon or monofilament leaders to a braided mainline. 1.Cross the two sections of line to be joined and then wrap one tag end around the standing part of the other line five to seven times depending on line diameter. 2.Pass the tag end back between the two lines. 3.Wrap the other tag end in the same manner and bring it back through the same opening. 4.Moisten the line and pull the standing lines to tighten knot.

Fishin-Tech

Fishing Kings
By Philemon Foo
Developer : Gameloft Devices : Apple and Android devices Size : 462 MB Version : 1.0.5 Rated: 4+

This month we take a look at another

fishing game for mobile devices. This month we look at a game called Fishing Kings. It is a game that allows you (the angler) to catch different varieties of fish species using different types of fishing tackle.

220

221

In Game Experience
Fishing Kings will not give you a real live feel of fishing nor is it close, but it is a lot of fun to play with especially during the rainy season when one is not out fishing sebaraus. It allows you to cast your lure, play your lure either by moving your mobile device or turning the reel. It also allows you to purchase equipment.

222

223

Imagine casting your lure out and being able to see how it swims, how fishes are reacting to it, what terrain it is swimming past, and how deep it is at; something every angler would love to have. Well, it is available here (unfortunately not in the real world).

224

225

It is one of those games that give you credit for catch and release as well as keeping the fish. Catch and release gives you better experience points but lower coins. Keeping the fish gives you more coins but experience wise, you dont score as much.

226

227

Fishing At Different Areas

You start fishing out at sea in the Bahamas (how nice) and then in time progress to different places. This is the right kind of game for those that love adventure and want to see what fish species would be opening up next. However it does take time and patience is indeed a virtue. Note: Moderate intake of coffee is good for you but too much may turn you into a zombie.

228

229

Different Fish Species

Fishing Kings brings along with it 30 fish species for you to catch from both freshwater such as the Amazon River, and saltwater (Bahamas for example). So far I have caught groupers, bonefish, barracudas, king mackerels, and ruby snapper. I have seen sharks and sailfishes swimming around as well as tiny eel like fishes.

230

231

Good Graphics
What I like about the game is the graphics. The Developers have put in considerable amounts of effort to ensure that we love its graphics. Imagine swimming out at sea and looking underwater. Well, the graphics are not that real but almost everything is in 3D. You will be seeing fishes swimming, corals, and debris, all in 3D.

232

233

So would it be a game worth downloading? Well, yes if you have time and patience to play it. It certainly is a nice game to play and you can also share on social media what youve caught and how much youve earned, if you like that sort of thing that is. Why not give it a go? You may get addicted to it.
