Introduction Rumah Jagaan Kasih Bestari is an Islamic orphanage centre that is currently housing 50 children. The centre provides shelter, schooling equipment as well as academic and religious education. It was established in 2007. The centre is located in Lot 5930, Jalan Jati Kg. Melayu Subang, Shah Alam, Selangor. It is in a form of a small single-storey detached house with a reasonable amount of outdoor space.

Identifying Issues Based on our observation, the organization suffers from numerous issues, firstly there is no adequate area for the children to place their bicycle, and the bikes are placed on the side and sometimes at the front of the porch. Secondly, the greenery of the area lacks care. The lack of space in the area makes it difficult to store hardware and gardening tools. The condition of the rehal (a small table specifically made for the al-Quran). Solutions From our numerous discussions with the guardian of the house, we have decided to tackle the issue of the lack of bicycle storage by constructing a bicycle rack. This in time will help the organization to be able to store their bicycles in a unique and systematic manner, and at the same time increases the organization awareness towards the environment. We also designed the bicycle stand to be completely portable , this is because the unit will be placed outside of the house , therefore when it rains the guardian has requested us to make it portable and easy to use . For our second project we decided to convert a space underneath the water tank into a storage room for equipment ranging from gardening tools to hardware. We did this by using 0.16 mm diameter PVC pipe, and gluing them on top of another. With this in place equipments ranging from gardening tools to hardware are kept away from children thus avoiding unnecessary accidents. Last but not least we decided to fix the rehal that were broken and unusable, we did this by cutting, sanding and replacing the wood.

Design Idea Floor plan

The floor plan shows the outdoor area of the compound and a partial part of the building, the bathroom. All dimensions are in meter.

Original Condition

Unorganized bicycles.

The area we want to construct the storage area for the tools.

Poor condition of the rehals that needs restoration.

Design Execution

Old vs. New Floor Plan

Bicycle Rack (Initial vs. Final)

Bicycle Rack (Initial vs. Final) Initially, the bicycle rack was designed to be a permanent structure therefore no handle and wheels were included in the design, on top of that, a strip of long wood panel is placed behind the tyres for support. During the development process, we were told by the guardian that he wished to have the rack to be movable, therefore we went back on the design and made a numerous changes such as adding handles at one end of the rack and a pair of wheels at the other end, on top of that we were advised by the workshop technician that the wood panel is not effective to be a supporting unit therefore we decided not to include the panel in our final design.

Store Furniture PVC Tool Shelf (Initial vs. Final)

Store Furniture PVC Tool Shelf (Initial vs. Final) Initially the design of the tool shelf is to have 3 layers of large PVC pipes stacked on top of each other to create a multiple rounded space for the storage of small gardening and hardware tools. As for the bottom half, the initial plan is to have a multiple storey of wooden planks stacked a few centimeters apart from one another to create a multiple of flat shelves in additional to the rounded ones. During the development process we came to a decision of minimizing the number of the wooden flat shelves due to eliminate the additional weights that could weaken the PVC structure.

Store Furniture Wooden Tool Rack (Initial vs. Final)

Store Furniture Wooden Tool Rack (Initial vs. Final) Based on the initial design, the wooden tool rack consists of three vertical wood planks that act as the structure with a number of horizontal wooden planks. Based on that design, the design will be anchored down to the wall. During the development process after the site were being revisited and analyzed, in addition to a further dialogue with the guardian, we came to a conclusion of having the rack unanchored and moveable instead. In order to achieve that, two additional support were added into the design to act as legs.

Sustainable/ Environmental Strategies

The world is facing many environmental problems including climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss and water shortages. As an architect student we need to understand how our design will affect the environment in the future to avoid more damage. In order to minimize the damage onto the environment, we adapt sustainable strategy into our design. We want to ensure that our product is made out of recycle material and also durable to serve the

A) Wood Pallet. Wood pallet is a basically a deck board that support goods by using forklift in most warehouses.

Advantages: The advantages of using wood to build our products are its properties and characteristics such as hard, reasonably strong, durable as well as aesthetical value such as the texture and the wood grains. In terms of financial, the wood planks were taken from a small factory where those wood planks came in a form of used pallets, which is result does not cost anything. Wood is a material that is easy to work with, shaping, cutting and assembling wood can be done using readily available tools from the workshop. The most vital advantage of all is its impact towards the environment. It does not require a great amount of energy to process, on top of that it is an organic material therefore it is biodegradable. Disadvantages: Despite the great amount of advantages of wood, it does come with a number of disadvantages which are its vulnerability towards pests, mites and parasites, its dangers such as untreated woods can cause minor injury such as splinter penetrating skins. The condition of some of the wood planks is also vary due to it being used for heavy duty purposes prior to this.

Why do we decide to use this material? Wood is a type of material that can be recycled. Recycled wood is free and it can be found in factories and warehouses. Although the woods are old, it has an exquisite and unique appearance, which is rarely seen in new woods. Some recycled woods are also strong and durable despite its age and its undergone of abuse. Recycling the wood can extend the lifetime of the wood and reduce the old woods from being thrown away to the landfill. In present day, cutting down trees are more rampant than recycling them. Instead of buying new woods, which came from logging, recycling the wood would be much relevant to create new furniture and use in construction industry. By recycling, we contribute to save the environment from using new wood, which came from logging that affects the environment in the long run.

B) PVC PVC pipe or Polyvinyl Chloride pipe is a type of plastic that are widely produced plastic pipe.

Advantages: Advantages of using PVC are that it is a reasonably strong and long lasting material, easy to work with simply using basic tools that are readily available from the workshop. In terms of characteristic, it is light in weight, and it does not deoxidise or lose its strength even under constant contact with water, therefore making it durable. The market price is reasonable. Disadvantages: The weakness of this particular material is that it cannot be exposed under a great amount of UV light as it will change its strength, it will become brittle. Why we choose this material? The reason why we decide to use this material for the PVC rack is mainly because it is cheap and durable. The material characteristic suits our need which we wanted to make the PVC rack to withstand the climate because it is placed outdoor.

C) Tyres Advantages: Advantages of using recycled tyres are mainly due to its characteristics such as waterproof, durable, reasonably high enough in strength for it to say in its original shape but at the same time but not too solid, instead it is elastic which means its a good material to absorb impacts. It terms of expenditure, no money were spent on the tyres. Disadvantages: Minor disadvantages of using used tyres are as such; each and every single one of the tyres were being used for quite a long period of time, which caused it to be in a very worn down condition on top of it being dirty. In additional to that, the tyres came is generally similar but not exactly identical in size. Why we choose this material? There are many reasons why we chose to use tire. First of all we can get it for free and its a used one and there we already save the cost and at the same time we as well contributed to the environment by using recyclable material. Tires are also easy to work with. The tire is easy to work with because it did not take much of our drilling the tires and all and there we have safe the energy and time, for that we could focus on the other parts of the project. The best part is the tyres do not need finishes. Furthermore, tyres are water resistant so it can be use outdoor. By using tyres it can lower down the number scrap, because the tyres are hard to dispose. Even though it is not good looking after going through some process it looks fine and nice with our structure.

Conclusion

In conclusion after working on this project in the last 3 months we realize how important is it to be able to reuse and recycle the materials, recycling saves energy, reduces raw materials extraction and combats climate change. The vast majority of studies have found that recycling our rubbish is better for the environment. We also have understood the importance of helping the less fortunate. In order to be able to create an awareness of the importance of creating environmentally sustainable products, designs and also services. On top of which we were made to understand the principles of being sustainable for the environment and public by exploring the current environment circumstances. After having thoroughly discussed the issue concerning responsible consumption, we have reached a conclusion that we believe is quite valuable. Although the problem of waste is one of the most worrying ones concerning environment, we do think there is a way to solve or at least to minimize the effects of rubbish in Nature. It is in our hands to assure a better future for our children, and leave the world as it was before we arrived. Last but not least we would like to express our sincere gratitude to out tutor Mr Sanjay Raman for guiding us towards the right direction, and also we would like to give our sincere appreciation towards Mr Fendi for helping out with labour intensified work which we were not use to.
