Vertical Grade

Indian Railways Permanent Way Manual Indian Railways Schedule of Dimensions 1676mm Gauge (BG), Revised 2004
Horizontal distance from centre of track to face of passenger platform coping Maximum 1680mm Minimum 1670mm Height above rail level for high passenger platforms 840mm maximum 760mm minimum 5. Maximum height above rail level for low passenger platform 455mm 6. Maximum height above rail level for goods platforms (except horse 1065mm The length of a passenger platform should be not less than the length of the longest passenger train excluding the engine, booked to stop at the platform. Minimum height above rail level for a width of 1 600mm on either 6250mm side of centre of track, of a signal gantry or a foot over bridge in a passenger station

Grades shall not exceed the following limits: (i) Station maximum 0.1% (ii) Midsection normal 2% (iii) Midsection exceptional 4% Grades shall be kept as flat as possible.

Vertical curves shall be provided where algebraic difference of change in adjacent gradients exceed 0.4%. A parabolic curve provides a constant rate of change in grade and should be adopted for vertical curves. Ruling Grade (Block section) (1 in 100, 1 in 150 or 1in 200 depend on terrain) Station yard Existing station 1 in 400 New station 1 in 1200 Min 1 in 270 guided by engineer in-charge
It may not be possible to provide yard gradients of 1 in 1200 while executing works in connection with gauge conversion, doublings and new crossing station etc. Railways should, however, make effort to provide grades as flat as possible in the station yards but not steeper than 1 in 400. In case of gradient steeper than 1 in 400 are required to be provided in exceptional cases, condonation for the same should be obtained from Railway

Board. Major Bridge Level or (1 in 1200) On curve Portion Compensated grade ( more than Ruling Grade)

Grade Compensation at Curves

The effect of a curve on the gradient is to, in effect, make it steeper. To compensate for this, ruling gradient on curves shall be made flatter so that the gradient effect along with curvature effect will not exceed the resistance due to ruling gradient. Factors for fixing Grade Difference between Existing and proposed Rail level in Case of doubling (due to drainage) Level Crossing (Rail and road level should be same) Point & crossing ( No grade change around 50 meter of point or crossing) Bridge Design factors Box Bridge (Free board 1 m, clear height) Slab Bridge (Clearance clearance is decided based on discharge) Frequent grade change not permitted Vertical curve If arithmetic difference of grade change is less than 4%

The track monuments include: (i) Kilometer boards; (ii) gradient posts; (iii) curve reference markers; (iv) LWR/CWR/SEJ reference markers; (v) fouling point markers; and66 MANUAL OF SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS (vi) turn out markers.
