Housing Market Expected to Rise in both Canada and the U.S.
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC), housing starts should regain momentum later this year and into 2014. It is expected that come 2014 housing starts will range between 166, 500 and 211,300, and Multiple Listing Service sales should vary between 435,800 and 501,400 units. This is a significant improvement compared to the 2013 housing starts which were lower than the 2012 levels. The reasons for this are said to be because of moderation in the first half of [2013] according to the CMHC. Still, the CMHC have stated that the average monthly growth rate of MLS sales has been increasing. Therefore, this change in the trend of the resale market is expected eventually lead to a similar change in the trend of the new home market. In a separate article published in Canadian Forest Industries magazine, the U.S. housing market should experience double-digit growth for housing starts near the end of 2013. The recent projections are based on the recent improvements in house prices across a broader number of markets according to the report. There are concerns, however, over the supposed premature increase of the housing sector relative to the overall economy. Suppliers of building materials may not be prepared for a swift demand in housing products. Furthermore, builders are feeling the effects of added costs for key building componentswhich in turn have caused construction costs to rise at a faster pace than expected. White River Sawmill, 2010 White River Forest Products, as it is being deemed, is expected to be fully operational by October 1 st. The companys estimated value is somewhere between $20 million and $25 million according to Ian Ross of Northern Ontario Business. Moreover, Ross also adds that the company is negotiating a plan that would see an additional 150, 000 cubic metres added to the existing 500, 000 cubic metres softwood supply of spruce, pine and fir. This addition would allow the company to produce 150million board feet of lumber a year and between 100,000 and 110,000 tonnes of chops the following year. Dottori expects that a total of about 90 jobs will be created as a result of the re-opening of the mill. To begin, however, 40 to 50 workers are expected to start the first shift in October. The Use of Technology in Canadas Forest Industry

The Canadian forest industry has been increasing its use of technology in its daily operations according to Natural Resources Canadas monthly publication Spotlight. The article goes on to describe the various innovative ways the forest sector is using technology from aerial, terrestrial and computerized tools. For example the aerial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology scans a particular area and provides foresters a way to accurately measure specific tree characteristics. Similar technologies are being developed for on the ground scanning which would also assess road geometry and help road construction. In addition, FPSuite is software that provides foresters important information regarding production volume, as well as revenue and costs associated with harvesting, transportation and silviculture. Ontario Wood Export member, OvrX Manufacturing Inc., has been featured in a special article in Northern Ontario Business. The article describes how the companys innovative Barricade basement insulation system has become a highly sought after product being sold in major hardware stores like Rona, Home Depot, and Lowes. OvrX was making strides to export the product to the United States but was slowed down as a result of the recession. Still, according to part-owner Howard Drew, OvrX is at the point right now that people from the states are starting to talk to us again and look at us. Moreover, sales manager Rick Ksiezopolski says the product has been well received at U.S. trade shows. They like it because of what it offers and because it is a Canadian product, and not made offshore. We focus on sound building science cold air on the floor and warm air on top creates condensation but our insulation prevents that condensation. Source: Liz Cowan, Northern Ontario Business

OWPEA joins NRCan led mission to Saudi Arabia

In June, OWPEA committed itself to joining Natural Resources Canadas (NR Can) mission to Saudi Arabia. The mission will take place between November 1st and 8th of 2013. NRCan believes that the market in the area will be expanding in the coming years. As a result, there is enormous potential and opportunities for not only Canada but its individual provincial and regional members of the forest industry. The mission is intended to explore and assess these opportunities and hopefully establish long-term links with the region. Ontario Wood Export is excited to be participating with the NRCan mission and expects the event to be a valuable experience for the organization and its members.
