MPS administrator named new superintendent for Kohler Schools

The Kohler School Board has selected Martin Lexmond, 46, to be the new superintendent for the Kohler School District. Lexmond will leave his current position as Director-Curriculum and Instruction at Milwaukee Public Schools to succeed Dr. Robert Kobylski, who will be leaving the district to become superintendent of the Menasha Joint School District, effective July 1. As reported on kohlervillager.com on April 21, Lexmond was one of three finalists that included Susan Alexander, District Administrator for the Markesan School District; and Kathleen Williams, retired superintendent from the East Maine District 63 in Cook County, Illinois. All three finalists came to Kohler to meet with board members, school staff, and community members who were invited to attend three separate meet and greet sessions where they were encouraged to pose questions to the candidates and leave comments on provided forms. Approximately 15-20 community members were in attendance for each session. The most asked question and comment posed velopment of a science, techto each candidate centered nology, engineering and around whether they planned mathematics leadership team to reside in, and be involved aimed at preparing students in, the community as a whole, for high-tech careers in the fuaside from their role as school ture. Mr. Lexmond brings a passion for teaching and learning, experience in leading schools and communities to educational excellence, and an authenticity that touched our parents, our students and our board in the interview process, said School Board President Jane Bishop. The Kohler School Board believes he has demonstrated throughout his career his ability to work effectively with staff, teachers, community partners, boards and most importantly, students. We are pleased to have found such a talented educator and inspirational leader to bring to our students and parents, said Bishop. Input sought on Village transit bus service

Kohler residents Joan Scheppmann and Donna Sanders are spearheading an effort to slightly alter the Sheboygan Transit System bus route through Kohler to make it more accessible to residents who desire alternative transportation, do not have a drivers license, or are physically unable to walk the distance it takes to meet the bus. The current route brings the bus from Sheboygan Falls on Greenfield Drive, turning right onto Valley Road for one block before turning left on School St. The two women would like the route slightly altered so the bus enters Kohler by turning right on School St. in the West 4 area near Aspen Ct. (see map at right), bringing the route closer to homes and shortening the walking distance for many residents to catch the bus. After traveling the length of School St., the bus turns left on Highland Dr., takes another left on Upper Rd., and turns right on Church St. which takes it past The Shops At Woodlake via Woodlake Rd. The bus then leaves the Village on the north end by going right on Willow Creek Dr. for the short distance to Highland Dr. where it turns left and heads for the County Rd. Y exit onto Highway 23 East into Sheboygan. Scheppmann and Sanders would like to see the bus continue on Woodlake Rd. through the Willow Creek Dr. intersection and loop around past homes and condos before reentering Highland Dr. from Woodlake Rd. Public Works Superintendent Bruce Neerhof said this alternate route would not increase costs to the Village and would only require a phone call to the Sheboygan Transit System if there is enough interest generated. The two women also hope to convince Transit System authorities and the Village to further expand the route to the south section of the Village (see shaded area on map), and even potentially continuing on directly to the Deer Trace Shopping Center. This would allow residents faster and easier access to Deer Trace by eliminating the ride to downtown Sheboygan to transfer to another bus destined for Deer Trace. Neerhof said this route change would increase the yearly cost to the Village and requires further study. The bus makes four stops in Kohler, at 6:00 a.m., 9:20 a.m., 1:20 p.m., and 3:35 p.m. It also stops at 6:05 a.m. and 3:05 a.m. to accommodate Kohler Co. employees. Seniors currently pay 85 cents to ride the bus. A special transportation service is provided for elderly and disabled residents needing transportation to doctor visits, but each trip must be reserved weeks in advance. A change to the bus route must increase ridership for it to be viable. Interested residents are asked to call the Village Hall at 459-3873 to express interest and support.

KOHLERVILLAGER.COM

From the Village Board President . . .

Greetings, Spring is here! The flowers are blooming, trees are budding and grass is growing. Spring also signals the beginning of the construction season in Wisconsin. With the completion of the Lost Woods Park Shelter, the Village of Kohler has two capital improvement projects planned, with a third currently going out for bid. The first project, which is already underway, is the replacement of the current outdoor childrens pools with a new zero entrance pool. The new pool will have water park features and will enhance the safety of our children. The existing outdoor pools served the community well for over fifty years. However, repairs and safety enhancements were no longer feasible and the outdoor childrens pools were shut down due to those concerns. The new pool will serve the community well for many years to come and provide much enjoyment for our youth. At the April Village Board Meeting, the contract was awarded to Neuman Pools from Beaver Dam. There is an incentive clause in the contract for the completion of the pool by June 11th. The Village Board and Neuman Pools believe this completion date can be met, thereby affording the greatest amount of use possible for this exciting new childrens pool this summer. The second project, which you will notice soon, is a continuation of one that began last summer. A final top coat of asphalt for School Street, from Highland Drive to West Park Lane, will complete the rebuilding of this section of road. Completion for this segment is expected to take only a few days. Additionally, School Street will receive new asphalt from West Park Lane to Valley Road. Resurfacing of this portion of School Street will take slightly longer. Lastly, at the April Village Board Meeting approval for the bidding of the reroofing of Memorial Hall, which includes the pool, theater and Youth Center, was approved. The Kohler School Board is also pursuing the possibility of re-roofing the schools roof system, which does not include the new addition. The Kohler Village Boards intention has always been to coordinate this project with the replacement of the roof system for the Kohler School building. Both roof systems have exceeded their life expectancies and are in need of replacement. The current building environment is still favorable for

competitive bidding and should be an advantage for the Village and for the School District. A final decision on moving forward with this project will take place after a review of the bids and confirmation of the Kohler School Boards intentions for this year. Those that utilize the Village of Kohlers walking path system may have noticed more waste receptacles along the paths. The additional waste receptacles were added for Village Residents that like walking their dogs, but not carrying dog waste. Play Ball! Dont miss the Greenbush Dead Citys defend their home turf against the Milwaukee Grays in the teams first Base Ball game of the 2010 season. Catch all the nostalgic action of authentic 1860s Base Ball on Sunday May 16 at Wade House Historic Site in Greenbush. Game time is 1:30 p.m. The fast-growing sport of vintage base ball (1860s spelling) celebrates the heritage of Americas pastime by playing according to rules and customs of the 19th century. Rules of vintage base ball are considerably different from those that 20th century fans (rooters) are used to, as is the games terminology. Among the major differences in rules, according to Betsy Urven, Wade House Lead Interpreter and Greenbush Dead Citys Manager, are that the pitcher, or hurler, throws the ball underhanded to the batter, or striker, there is no strike zone, foul balls do not count as strikes, balls caught on the first bound are outs, and players do not use gloves. Vintage uniforms and bats are used, and base balls are wrapped and stitched by hand, states Urven, and the rules of 1860 base ball are followed. In the game, the hurler (pitcher) must deliver the ball as near as possible over the center of the home and for the striker (batter) to hit. Hands (outs) are made when the ball is caught on the fly on the first bounce, or if the ball is in the hands of the tender (baseman) before the

runner steps on the base. Scouts (outfielders) and the rest of the players catch the ball without gloves and the behind (catcher) has the job of catching without any protective equipment or glove. Be there on Sunday May 16 to enjoy an authentic game of vintage Base Ball as it was played over 140 years ago in Sheboygan County. Join in the fun as the teams transport fans back to a day and age when the sport was in its infancy. Following the game, fans will be invited to join team members in a rousing pick-up game. Kids, you wont need to bring your gloves for this game! Wade House Historic Site is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; game-only tickets for the Base Ball game are $5 per person. Concessions are available before and during the game. Admission to the entire site (including the base ball game) is $11 for adults, $9.25 for seniors 65 and older, and $5.50 for children ages 5-17. For more information about vintage base ball at Wade House Historic Site and other special events, call (920) 526-3271 or visit the web site at www.wadehouse.org. Increasing public awareness of waste dumping in storm drains in the Village of Kohler
By Peter Cope Some citizens of Kohler may not realize that any materials dumped into the storm drains run directly into the Sheboygan River. If hazardous waste is dumped, this can be a serious pollution problem for the watershed in Sheboygan County. Here in Kohler we are part of a state wide project aimed at keeping our environment clean and educating the public about hazardous dumping into local waterways. In order to assist Kohler on accomplishing these goals, the pavement next to all the storm drains in the Village of Kohler were spray painted with the statement: DUMP NO WASTE - DRAINS TO RIVER. This work was done as an Eagle Scout Service Project last August by Boy Scouts of Kohlers Troop 831. This project will hopefully help residents to understand that any substances and materials dumped into the storm drains do not go through a water treatment plant.

The British are coming Kohler swimmers qualify for back to the Village in YMCAs state championship World Cup Year
Eleven Kohler swimmers swam with the Sheboygan Chinooks through some tough meets to qualify for the YMCA State Swim With an estimated 18 million players, the sport of soccer is certainly a mainstay of the American youth sports culture. The US Mens National team has qualified for this years World Cup in South Africa and the Womens National Team remains as one of the powerhouses in world soccer. As the game continues to develop here, the number one soccer company in the United States, Canada and Australia Challenger Sports has been invited back to hold one of their nationwide program of British Soccer camps right here in the growing soccer community of the Village of Kohler. It forms part of a local initiative to celebrate the worlds most popular game during the FIFA World Cup year. The Village of Kohlers Parks and Recreation department has again teamed up to host the week long British Soccer camp during the week of June 14th 18th at Lost Woods Park and Roosevelt Park in Kohler. Last years camp was a complete hit and this years is sure to score with budding soccer players in the area. The camp will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challengers British coaching staff flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs. Challenger will hold over 2,500 British Soccer Camps this summer and will coach over 100,000 players between the ages of 4 and 18, as well as completing FREE coach education clinics for over 20,000 parents and coaches. Challengers British Soccer Camp is more than a week of drills and skills. In addition to taking part in a daily regimen of foot skill development, technical and tactical practices and daily World Cup tournament style plays, each child will be treated to a rich cultural experience and lessons on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. The most popular part of each camp is the Camp World Cup. The coaches use this daily tournament to teach the players about life, customs and traditions of other countries. The campers are asked to make up cheers, bring flags, dress up and learn as much as they can about the country they represent Teams are also welcome to attend and receive a week of focused instruction to prepare them for the fall season. Each camper will receive a FREE camp T-shirt, soccer ball, soccer poster and an individual skills performance evaluation. In addition, any child who signs up online at least 45 days prior to camp will receive a genuine British Soccer replica Jersey valued at $39! Space is limited so parents are advised to sign up online in advance at www.challengersports.com to avoid disappointment. Nick Rundell, a Regional Director for Challenger Sports remarks, We are looking forward to a long lasting partnership with the Village of Kohlers Recreation Team in which we know we can help them grow and achieve their goals on and off the field. We hope that our camps, clinics, tournament and tours not only help players develop their skills, but also encourage them to develop a passion for the sport that goes beyond their organized team activities. We want them to do all of the things that their counterparts in Europe, Asia and South America are doing. We would love to see more kids playing with soccer balls in the front yard, more kids watching professional games on television and more kids dreaming that one day they can be playing for the USA in the World Cup.

Tour of Americas Dairyland Offers Bicyclists Opportunity to Race on Closed Road

Milwaukee, Wis. Competitive bicyclists will have the opportunity to race on one of North America's premiere closed road courses during the 2010 Tour of America's Dairyland Pro Bicycling Series presented by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, held June 17-27, 2010. Day 5 of the omnium bicycle race, which will travel to 11 Wisconsin cities, will take racers to Elkhart Lake's meticulously paved four-mile, 14-turn Road America race track, which has hosted auto and motorcycle races including the American LeMans Series and vintage car events since 1955. The Elkhart Lake Road Race at Road America will take place on June 21, the day after the track hosts a NASCAR Nationwide weekend. We're all going to be like big kids at Road America...such a rare opportunity to race two wheels on a track where so many historic four-wheel moments have been made, said Paul Weaver, co-founder of Midwest Cycling Series, LLC, the Tour's promoter. The road surface is in impeccable condition, and the course will be safe and completely closed off to public traffic. Last TOAD [Tour of Americas Dairyland], everyone was talking about the massive inclines at Blue Mounds, continued Weaver. This year, the bragging rights will be tied to the challenging Road America course, complete with its three-quarter mile climb to the finish. The course features numerous elevation changes and unique twists including the infamous kink turn on the backside. Interested racers are encouraged to sign up early as there are caps on registration and some categories are nearing capacity. Advance registration will remain open on SportsBaseOnline until June 13, 2010. Riders who have already signed up should take note that the start times have moved up: http://www.tourofamericasdairyland.com/sc hedule/elkhart-events.php Spectators can take in this rare opportunity to watch men and women pro and amateur cyclists compete on the Road America Track for free. Concession stands will be open and offering a wide variety of palate-pleasing selections. The second road race of the 2010 Tour of Americas Dairyland will take place June 24, in Greenbush, Wis., partially through the scenic Kettle Moraine State Forest. Pro and amateur racers of multiple categories including Women Cat 3/4, Pro Women 1/2, Cat 4/5, Cat 3, Masters 1/2/3/ 35+, Masters 4/5 35+, and Pro Men 1/2 will compete for over $105,000 in cash and primes in the 2010 Tour of Americas Dairyland. Opening night on June 17 at the Shorewood Criterium Cycling Classic will feature Men and Women Pro races only. In addition to Greenbush and Elkhart Lake's Road America, other Wisconsin communities hosting criteriums in the second year of the Tour of America's Dairyland include Shorewood, Thiensville, Grafton, Appleton, Sheboygan, Waterloo, Fond du Lac, Downer Avenue on Milwaukees Eastside, and Waukesha. The high energy of the bicycling action will be complemented in most communities by family-friendly activities, entertainment, official Tour merchandise benefiting Racers Against Childhood Cancer (RACC), plenty of food and drink from local vendors, and much more.

Laura Kohler appointed to school board, new members sworn in

Newly elected school board members Marlene Yang and Diane Kelly were sworn in at a special meeting on Monday, April 26. Yang and Kelly were to replace outgoing members Diane Venn and Laura Kohler, but the stepping down of Jim ODonnell created a third vacancy. With the hiring of a new superintendent and election of two new board members, Laura Kohler felt the school would be best served by retaining an experienced board member, so she challenged Kohler resident and Sheboygan School District teacher Lisa Kraus for the vacancy. After a brief question and answer period conducted by School Board President Jane Bishop, the board voted unanimously to appoint Kohler to resume her role on the school board. Kohler will be sworn in at the June meeting.

Biotechnology and Kohler students test Molecular Biology the waters

College Prep Biology students at Kohler High School have recently completed the biotechnology component of the biology curriculum. Biotechnology is the technology of using living things to create useful products. Biotechnology has historically been used in the making of bread, wine, soap, the treatment of waste, and the production of cheese. Selective breeding of agricultural animals and selective practices in crop planting have occurred for hundreds of years. Biotechnology has changed due to the advancements of technologies such as computers and software in the 1970s to include the development of human insulin for the treatment of diabetes, human growth hormone for children, and identification of specific genes responsible for genetic disorders, and in some cases treatment for those disorders. College Prep Biology students learn and then use the steps necessary to move a gene from one organism to another. The process involves the isolation of plasmid DNA, using endonuclease restriction enzymes to cut DNA at specific sites in the DNA sequence, ligation of the plasmid fragments, transformation of bacteria, preparation and casting of agarous gel, electrophoresis of restriction enzyme digested DNA, staining, viewing, and photographing the gel, and learning the process by which scientists determine DNA fragment size. Ask any College Prep Biology student for more information on this experiment. They will be happy to share details of their successful experience! The Testing the Waters Program is a science enrichment program that allows students to participate in a community service project and also encourages them to use some of their biology and chemistry skills. The students listed participated in this years water testing program at Kohler High School. These students were actively involved in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting biology and chemistry data related to the water quality of the Sheboygan River. The Kohler group is responsible for testing the river near Black Wolf Run Golf Course. Some of the tests included dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total phosphates, nitrates, turbidity, Seniors: Kevin Beine Meghan Case Peter Cope Danielle Dyksterhouse Lauren Drury Dominic Gischia Stanley Kaymen Peter Ladwig Emily Miller Matt Ollmann Ashley Sobecki Kelsey Stefanczyk Patrick Stillwell Douwe Vander Schaaf Holly Zehfus Sophomores: Jacob Hart Melyssa Louwagie Rachel OKeefe Lily Zehfus

total solids, fecal coliform, and macroinvertebrates. The water test results were sent to the Maywood Environmental Center, and also to the local Department of Natural Resources. Other Sheboygan County schools tested different parts of the river and the results were shared at a county forum. Students have the opportunity to suggest explanations for their findings, and work together to explore possible action plans that might have a positive impact on the areas land conservation and the environment. Ms. Krejcarek is the science teacher leading this group. This years team included: Juniors: Maren Bogard Dan Chen Sarah Chung Lizzy Diehl Christian Ertel Kaitlin Esche Hannah Fenton Carissa Gartman Danielle Hart Lauren Henderson Brenna Hogan Kaylie Ladwig Christine Leffel Erin Lammers Meghan Long Alex Mauer Mary Molepske Austin Neerhof Jenna Peters Kara Saemann Michaela Tures Vicky Von Vajna Shawn Vroom

Students Alex Romanoski, Angela Sjolund, Lily Proudman, John Benishek, and Andrew Goodell prepare DNA for electrophoresis.

Global Learning and Observations to benefit the environment

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is when students collect environmental data and interact with the scientific community. Kids around the world collect and enter data like the Kohler GLOBE members do. GLOBE supports students, teachers, and scientists as they investigate the Earth system while working with NASA (National Air and Space Administration), NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), and the U.S. Department of State. It is the first and only international environmental monitoring program that involves students around the world. Who participates in GLOBE? Students in over 109 countries participate in the GLOBE Program. There are more than 36000 GLOBE-trained teachers representing 19000 schools around the world. Students enter about 16 million measurements to the GLOBE database for use in their science projects and for scientists use. GLOBE brings together students, teachers, and scientists through learning and research. The teams of College Prep Biology students collect atmospheric data daily while the juniors and seniors in College Prep.Chemistry, Advanced Honors Biology, and College Prep Physics, collect hydrology data during the fall and spring. Some of the atmospheric protocols include; cloud type, water vapor, relative humidity, precipitation measurement and pH, current, maximum, and minimum temperature, and more. Each week we enter the data into the international GLOBE web-site data base. The atmospheric data that is collected by participants in the GLOBE Program is used by scientists to help them in their research. It is important because we need to know what is going on in our atmosphere so that we can predict the weather and learn more about our Earth. When we know more about our atmosphere and how it changes throughout time, we can find ways to protect, monitor, and understand our atmosphere. Students involved in the GLOBE Program this year are: John Benishek, Andrew Goodell, Garrett Griswald, Claire Hillstrom,

Christina Lindstrom, Megan Mascipinto, Eric Mehoke, Sarah Molepske, Peter Nebel, Danielle Neese, Charles Olmsted, Lily Proudman, Alex Romanoski, Philip

Samuels, Ryan Tengowski, Nick Tesmer, Alex VanderSchaaf, Ray Venn, Kendall Wolf, Lily Zehfus, and Ryan Zittel. Science teacher, Jessie Good, serves as the advisor.

Pledge of Allegiance Communications/Announcements/Schedules/ Presentations Board Presidents Report Jane Bishop reported on the resolutions at the WASB Convention in Milwaukee. She discussed resolutions of interest: 1. Arbitration 2. Health Insurance 3. Arts and creativity Education. Jane announced the resignation of Jim ODonnell. Certificates of Honor MS students: Cal Stefanczyk, Evan Koross, Billy ONeill, Lily Hart, Katie Ruelle, Dominic Bocchini, Annika Lee, Grace Lofgren (Spelling Bee Champion of Kohler) Carson Schneider HS students: Katie Anderson, AJ Bocchini, Danielle Hart, Jacob Hart, Abby Lee, Alex Mauer, Julia Mauer, Angela Sjolund, Tim Valicenti, Danielle Dyksterhouse, Mary Molepske, Greg Suralik, Rachel OKeefe, Malin Ottander Announcement of National Merit Scholarship Finalists Bob commended both Stanley Kaymen and Jordan Kusel and congratulated both their families. Wellness Day Activities Laura Multer and Heather Reader-Schubert are working on the 2010 wellness day. Laura worked in November to find the keynote speaker for middle and high school students. The presentation for parents is: The Dark Side of Digital Technology: the Internet, Cell Phones, and Social Media by Eric Szatkowski, Special Agent with the Department of Justice/Division of Criminal Investigation March 10, 2010 from 6:00 8:00 p.m. in the Kohler Memorial Theatre. Heather wished to do something in the DLC with behavioral studies students. The class is participating in a 2 part collaboration with other school districts regarding cyberbullying. All the schools will create a public service announcement. Bullying.org will run the psa over the internet at no costs to the districts. Dr. Kobylski read the following statement: Neither I nor the members of the Board of Education will disclose or discuss in a public session, confidential pupil record information related to any student enrolled within the School District. This also means that we are not in a position to comment on confidential pupil record information which might further inform the community with respect to reasons upon which particular students may have elected to enroll in another school district. I will say that the reasons for students enrolling in other districts have not been as simple or clear cut as may be claimed or believed. The School District has a comprehensive policy on bullying. The policy is supplemented by ongoing training for faculty and staff, as well as academic instruction for students. If the School District is to undertake a disciplinary response, bullying behaviors must occur on school premises or when students are under the supervision of school authorities. If the schools are to respond, students must communicate their experiences. Students must also be willing to confirm having been the recipient of bullying behaviors, when those behaviors are observed by a faculty member or school official. Each year, more students seek to enroll in the School District of Kohler, than to leave. As was recently reported on the front page of the Sheboygan Press, 120 students chose to open enroll in the Kohler school system for the 2009-2010 school year compared to 38 students who decided to open enroll out of the Kohler system. Just nine days into the open enrollment/school choice application period for the 2010-2011 academic year, 33 students have applied for entry into Kohler, with just 4 current students submitting applications to other districts. With regard to the five families who have recently elected to enroll their children in other school districts, only one has suggested that their decision was based upon an issue of bullying. Any assertion to the contrary has either not been communicated to, or confirmed by School District officials. The school District of Kohler has a long history of providing a welcoming and tolerant environment to all stakeholders. Neither students nor parents should hesitate to communicate incidents of bullying, or other sensitive information, to school principals, members of the faculty, or members of the Board of Education. The School District will promptly respond. Review of District Finances Dr. Kobylski reported that the district is approximately 2% below 2009-2010 expenditures. As a result of Feb 2 expense summary, the district is approximately 3% below expenditures from last year. There were, however, extraordinary claims with regards to unemployment claims. . Superintendents Report New website update The on-switch has been flipped. Its a process, not an event. Wendy thanked the parents and community members for their patience and ideas. Turn-it-in software (Anti-plagiarism) Allows teachers to manage plagiarism. Students submit papers electronically and the software can identify language. The English department will be using it next week. Other high school departments will follow suit. Thank you notes to school district for performances and generosity A particular family is going to enroll their children in Kohler after looking at schools across the state; the teachers received a thank you note from KSF for donating their time with the craft fair; Kohler students brought in 300 of the 1200 coats collected for Coats for Kids program; hats for childrens cancer research raised $672; Souper Bowl collected 4000 cans of soup for Sheboygan Food Pantry; Madrigals sang at Sargento Retiree Christmas luncheon and received a $200 bonus. High School Report Bob is working on the master schedule for the high school. Mr. Benish is convening a group of individuals to work out an equitable solution for a band trip. The trip proposal will be finalized by the next board meeting. Lee will also meet with the village residents and come up with a plan on how to manage the weight room. The district needs to protect itself from liability issues, safety issues, and security issues. Distance Learning in Science

Distance learning has many forms and applications in education. In fact, distance learning may mean something very different to different individuals depending on their experience and knowledge base. In its position statement entitled, The role of E-Learning in Science Education, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has clarified e-Learning and suggests that it should significantly enhance science teaching and learning. Students at Kohler have the opportunity to experience e-learning in the new Distance Learning Center. Some students involved in the academic extracurricular Testing the Waters Program participated in an e-field trip on Wednesday, March 31. The presentation was entitled Watershed Ecology and was presented by a scientist at the Cranbrook Institute.
