Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia's "Sunshine State", is located on the Brisbane River and has a wonderful climate all year round. Attractions such as beaches and rainforests are only an hour away. The riverside parklands, markets selling a fantastic range of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood, timber houses, and cultural centres are favourite attractions within the city. LSI Brisbane is centrally located in a heritage building in the heart of the city close to public transport, shops and restaurants. It is only a short walk to the sophisticated Queen Street Mall and the heart of Queensland's retail and financial districts. The riverside Botanical Gardens are within easy reach of the school. We have pleasant air-conditioned classrooms, a computer room with free internet with wifi and e-mail access and a learning centre with resource materials. Our leisure program allows you to practise your English while you enjoy the attractions of sunny Brisbane. We offer afterschool activities three days a week, sightseeing trips, sports and weekend excursions, and many of the activities are free or low cost.

Director of Studies

Hi. My name's Chris and I am responsible for academic matters at LSI Brisbane. On your first day, I make sure you are placed in the class which is best for you. I regularly talk to the teachers about your progress and ask them if they think that the class is still the best one for you, or if you should try a more challenging, or easier, class. We have a knowledgeable, talented and dedicated teaching staff, whose aim is to help you understand the English language. They watch your progress carefully and help you with your individual language problems. My aim is for you to have the best experience possible in your class while you are here, so I am always available to answer any questions you have and to help with any problems you might have with your studies. I look forward to meeting you!

ACCOMMODATION
ACCOMMODATION IN GENERAL All the accommodation offered by LSI Brisbane is carefully selected to ensure that it meets our quality standards. HOST FAMILIES JOIN IN! Many students who attend classes at LSI Brisbane choose to live with host families during their stay. The greatest advantage of a homestay experience is the opportunity to communicate and interact with Australians outside the classroom. Our host families are welcoming and helpful, and staying with them gives students the opportunity to see how Australians live and to make new friends. Our hosts provide a comfortable private room, completely furnished with all the amenities of a home. We offer two types of homestay accommodation to our students: Half-Board, which includes breakfast and an evening meal Monday to Friday and three meals per day on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays; Bed and Breakfast, which provides breakfast every day. Bed and breakfast is not a self-catering arrangement and students do not have the use of the host familys kitchen. Details about our other accommodation options (student residence, guesthouse or hotel) are available upon request. Host families normally live within a 30 minute commute by public transportation to LSI Brisbane. Our Accommodation Coordinator carefully selects every host family to ensure that the student's stay is comfortable, enjoyable, safe and that it feels just like at home. Our families homes range in size from an apartment to large houses. Brisbane people are fairly casual and will treat a newcomer almost like a family member, so students should not be surprised if their host encourages them to join them in the kitchen to prepare a typical dish from their country, or to "help yourself" to breakfast, rather than being served. Extra weekly supplements are charged for executive homestay with a private bathroom special diets such as vegan, gluten free, halal or where foods are limited; full board underage student guardianship. Underage students must stay with a host family unless their own family is in Brisbane. RESIDENCE ACCOMMODATION We are delighted to offer a range of residence accommodation suitable for all budgets. This type of accommodation will be particularly useful to those who are seeking more independence. The student residences are located within easy reach of the city. They offer various combinations of meals for five or six days per week. Some offer twin share rooms and others offer single rooms only. All residence accommodation is subject to availability.

STUDENTS ARRIVAL ORIENTATION DAY Welcome! On the first day of school, new students will be evaluated for level placement and given an overview of our programs. From the results of the placement test and oral evaluation given before the orientation, students are placed into the appropriate level for them. OUR SCHEDULE FOR THE FIRST DAY Welcome and registration 9:00. Placement test: English level evaluation 9:30 10:40. Coffee break: 10:40 11:00. Orientation Session: Introduction of staff and information about LSI Brisbane 11:00 11:35 Tour of LSI Brisbane and the city 11:35 12:40. Standard 20 students will then be free to pursue their own interests. Their classes will start at 9:00 on Tuesday morning. Intensive 30 students begin the afternoon portion of their course at 1:30, finishing at 3:10.

In the classroom, teachers use a communicative approach to teach English. The students develop language skills which they can use in the situations they find themselves in while living in Brisbane. The entire curriculum is structured to follow a progression from level to level. New skills are introduced, while existing skills are reinforced. ARRIVAL AND AIRPORT TRANSFER All flights to Brisbane land at Brisbane International or Brisbane Domestic Airport. After exiting the plane, simply follow the signs to Arrivals, where students must present their passport and a declaration card to an immigration officer. Next, students should proceed to the Baggage Claim Area to pick up their bags from the baggage carousel corresponding to their flight number. Then they go through Customs, where the staff check if students have anything to declare. Australian Customs regulations are strict about food and animal products. From the airport most students take a booked airport transfer or taxi to reach their host family, residence, or hotel. BOOKED AIRPORT TRANSFER If the student has booked an airport transfer, and LSI has received accurate flight arrival information with the name of the airline, flight number, and arrival time (at least one week prior to your arrival), LSI will arrange for the students to be met by a driver. Please advise students to look for the uniformed driver with a welcoming sign displaying the blue LSI logo and the students name, after they have been through Customs. If for some reason the student does not see our representative, they should phone 3393 0986 and wait next to the information desk until they are located. In case of delayed arrival, please phone +61 (0)7 3393 0986. In case of emergency, please contact an LSI staff member on +61 (0)405 550 651.

Getting around
PUBLIC TRANSPORT In Brisbane there are three main means of public transport, the buses, the trains and the boats (cross-river ferries and up-river catamarans). The city is divided into zones, and LSI Brisbane is located in Zone 1 in the centre of the city. Most of our homestays are in Zone 2, although we may place students in Zones 3 & 4 if there are special requests. It costs AUD$36.80 per week to travel from Zone 2 to the city and return on a weekly ticket. The single fare is $3.11 using a Go Card and $4.60 using a paper ticket. There are no transport concessions available for LSI Brisbane students. Check www.transinfo.qld.gov.au for all public transport information in Brisbane.

TAXIS Taxis are a very convenient way of traveling, and there are always taxis waiting outside the Airport Terminal to transport passengers to their destinations. Students should allow about AU$60 for the taxi fare to their homestay.

TRAIN SERVICE

There is a train from Brisbane International Airport to Central Station in the city, where you will probably need to change trains or go to a bus stop. LSI Brisbane does not recommend coach and bus travel on arrival.

AIRPORT BUS CoachTrans has a coach service from Brisbane Airports to the Transit Centre in the city. Passengers then have to walk for about thirty minutes to the bus stops to catch a bus to their destination. There are very few buses at weekends, and LSI Brisbane does not recommend coach and bus travel on arrival.
