Sport Central also offers students the use of three glass-backed squash courts and a 25 metre, six lane swimming pool, equipped with a floating floor that enables the depth of the water to be adjusted. This makes the pool the perfect environment for both beginners and performance swimmers alike. If the swimming pool doesnt really interest you, perhaps the 12 metre climbing wall with 18 different lines, each with 3 routes, will seem like more of a challenge! Available to free climb or for those who have never tried climbing before, our Start Climbing course might be the best approach. Not really a climber but a golfer? No problem; why not use one of our two highly sophisticated golf simulators allowing you to practice your swing and play some of the worlds best courses whatever the weather.

Sport Central
In September 2010, Sport Central, a 30 million complex located in the heart of City Campus, was opened to wide acclaim. This new centre of sporting excellence has been built to the highest standards and contains a variety of different features. The centrepiece of this landmark building is the Sport Central arena. The arena has been designed to cater for international competitive fixtures and has hosted the GB Basketball qualifier against Macedonia. It is also the home of the Newcastle Eagles basketball team, the most successful team in the British Basketball League.

Facilities and opportunities that can truly be described as world class.

The Northumbria Language Centre

The Northumbria Language Centre (NLC) provides a range of pre-sessional and in-sessional English language programmes for international students. These programmes help you become an independent, reflective learner and will equip you with the skills required to successfully continue your English language and academic development at Northumbria University and beyond.

Our staff are highly qualified and experienced in English language teaching and we offer a supportive and friendly environment in which students will improve their English language and academic skills. All our English language programmes are accredited by the British Council.

Summer school pre-sessional programmes

The summer school English and Study Skills and International Pre-Masters programmes are similar in content to our year-round provision. Depending on your requirements you can attend either the full 11-week programme beginning in June or a six-week programme beginning in July.

Pre-sessional programmes
The English and Study Skills programme helps you improve your English language level so that you can meet the entry requirements of the course you want to join. By the end of the programme you should be confident to work with academic texts, lectures and seminars, and discuss your studies with academic staff and fellow students. The International Pre-Masters English programme is suitable if your academic qualifications meet the entry requirements for your chosen Masters course, but your English language level falls below the entry level. You will improve these skills in an intellectual context in which critical thinking, questioning, discussion and analysis are developed.

Summer school social programme

The summer school also provides a programme of visits to key tourist attractions such as Edinburgh, York, Hadrians Wall and Northumbrian castles. The countryside and coast of Northumbria are extremely beautiful and have a rich heritage, whilst Newcastle is a vibrant city famous for its culture and for its shopping and nightlife.

I chose Northumbria... because it is located in a very vibrant city. It has newly-built facilities and buildings such as the refurbished Students Union and Sport Central. It has collaboration with my university in Singapore so I had an option to come to Northumbria to complete my course.

Newcastle... is beautiful. The people are really friendly and it has a lot of Chinese supermarket stores, so whenever I miss food from back home I can always go to the Chinese stores or restaurants to get food. I like the accessibility here. Everything is in or around the city centre; the University, hospital, supermarket, shopping mall everything that a student would need.

Research at Northumbria

At Northumbria we place research at the very core of our academic community.

Research is what is so very special about a university and at Northumbria we pride ourselves particularly on research that makes a difference; research that has application and affects peoples lives, as well as driving forward new knowledge and understanding across all our disciplines. Postgraduate students are a vitally important part of our research landscape. With over 500 students studying for research degrees (MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate) across the University, we have a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers, supported by excellent facilities in the Graduate School, which oversees all aspects of postgraduate research programmes and provides resources to support them. The University has invested significantly to improve support for postgraduate study, with dedicated high-quality spaces and facilities available throughout the University. Financial support for postgraduate study comes from a number of sources, including Northumbrias own research scholarships, scholarships funded by the Research Councils, and scholarships funded by external sponsors. Details of current opportunities can be found on the website www.northumbria.ac.uk/ researchstudentships Opportunities for postgraduate research are available in all parts of the University, with supervision provided by acknowledged experts. In the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), more than two-thirds of our research was judged to be of an international standard, with almost half of this assessed as excellent or outstanding. In recent years we have further strengthened our research base through the appointment of almost 100 new, research-active, academic staff.

Types of degree
Northumbria offers several types of research degree programmes. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Professional Doctorate degrees are designed to develop research and enquiry skills to the highest level, and advance career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development. The PhD programme allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that will enable original research in their chosen field of

research

study, including practice-led research. The Professional Doctorate is equivalent to a PhD, but with a clear focus on developing professional skills and practice. It is the logical choice for experienced professionals who wish to continue their lifelong learning. In addition Northumbria also offers the Master of Philosophy.

Programme structure
Usually a research degree will involve a programme of active research typically three years full-time or five years part-time, with the support of a supervisory team.

The Graduate School

The Graduate School is a dedicated facility which supports the postgraduate research community. It provides research training, organises conferences and events and administers projects to enhance the student experience. A key responsibility of the School is the arrangement of research degree examinations and awards. Northumbrias excellence in supervision and skills development is evidenced by the results of the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 2011, a national survey administered by the Higher Education Academy. Northumbrias extensive training programme provides support to students throughout their programme. It includes sessions covering: Academic writing Publishing and presenting Ethics and governance. I chose Northumbria... because of the location. Id heard from friends that Newcastle is a nice place to be. I got in touch with some of the lecturers while I was going through the application process. They were very friendly and helpful, which I think is important if youre going to be working with someone for three years. I chose this course... because Northumbria is renowned in Nigeria and some of the people in the Department are well known in industry. Northumbria is accredited by all the relevant professional bodies, which is good for employment prospects. My first week in Northumbria... was great. I felt very new when I got here, but I was welcomed by people around me. The people I met were friendly and it was easy to settle down. Some UK students even took me to an African shop to buy African food. My favourite thing about the course... is that its very well designed, and the support I get from the tutors and the Graduate School is fantastic. They encourage me and give me financial support to go and present my work at conferences, and to network with researchers from other universities. Ive also been given the opportunity to teach, and to use my research to influence teaching. My projects... include my research work. Ive also been involved in organising seminars and workshops. Theres an annual Quantity Surveying workshop which is held at a different university each year and this year was hosted by Northumbria. Ive been involved in inviting delegates, marketing, making flyers, organising registration, as well as presenting my own research and networking with other delegates. When I am not studying... I like to relax in the pub with friends and colleagues. Theres lots of good places to go in Newcastle; the cinema, the BALTIC art gallery, the Sage Gateshead. Its important to relax and wind down. After I graduate... Ill have lots of options. Id like to go back into the construction industry to work again as a quantity surveyor or as a construction manager, but maybe Ill do some consulting, or go into teaching.

I worked for the Singapore Housing Authority for about three years after graduating. I entered the airline industry in 1986 and held various positions including expatriate postings to South Africa, Japan and Canada. In 2000, I joined the airfreight industry with Singapore Airlines Cargo and worked in a range of areas before being posted overseas to manage the airlines commercial operations in Hong Kong and the United States, based in Chicago. I am currently the Regional VP for Singapore Airlines Cargo in Europe. My job involves management of the commercial and operational functions of Singapore Airlines Cargo in Europe and Russia. I enjoy managing in a cross-cultural work environment and dealing with the challenges of the airfreight industry, promoting global trade between Europe and the rest of the world. Studying Business at Northumbria prepared me well for work, it gave me a tertiary education that was well recognised and enabled me to pursue enriching career opportunities when I returned to Asia. It was a great experience.

I am the Staff Conservator for the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. I oversee the care and handling, and conservation treatment of the collections of Canadas oldest museum, which comprises humanities, natural sciences and archival holdings. I enjoy the great diversity that comes from my work day-to-day, as well as the fact that I work with an interesting collection and with co-workers who come from a variety of academic fields of expertise. Northumbria allowed me to explore some areas of conservation in more depth than I previously had done, and it was interesting to get an international perspective. Achieving an MA degree has enhanced my credibility as a professional, particularly among those outside of my field of expertise.

Building Management BSc (Hons) BEng Mechanical Engineering Brunei Year Graduated: 2008
Completing my degree was an achievement that I am very proud of. I had a hard time completing my final year project. Thank goodness for my colleagues and lecturers at Northumbria, they helped me through. I completed my project successfully and learned some important lessons along the way. I am now an Education Officer, teaching at National Diploma level in Plant Engineering at Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering in Brunei and I was recently appointed to the committee of the research department. I enjoy my work as a teacher. I enjoy the satisfaction it brings me when the students graduate with flying colours. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I help a student realise their dreams. I originally planned to work in the private sector after graduating and changed my mind after doing some voluntary work and attending workshops. When considering career options Id advise anyone to keep an open mind. Dont be afraid to change your mind. With mechanical engineering, you will never know where you will go. It is a big world out there. Northumbria is the best place to study, it has the best facilities I have ever seen, the friendliest support I have ever experienced, all within an internationally-friendly environment. I would definitely come back to do my postgraduate qualification.

MA TESOL Vietnam Year Graduated: 2010
After graduating from Northumbria, I worked as a teacher at Equest Academy, an English learning centre specialising in IELTS and TOEFL. I now work as a linguistics lecturer at the University of Languages and International Studies in Vietnam. What I liked most about my MA TESOL course was the wide range of available resources for learning and researching. The library system is really good. I was also impressed by the Student Services at Northumbria. All the staff were so nice and helpful to me. My tutors were effective facilitators for my study, I have learnt a lot from them. The city of Newcastle is a great place to live and study. The life here is not too busy and noisy as in some big cities, and not too boring or quiet either. The cost of living is quite affordable for international students like me. There are a lot of interesting places to visit such as gardens, parks, and historical sites. Travel links are good so its easy to get to other places with tourist attractions. Having the opportunity to work at the University of Languages and International Studies in Vietnam is a great achievement for me after leaving Northumbria. I think I will have a long teaching career. Im planning to do a PhD in the next two years so that I can progress in my profession.

European Business Administration MA Germany Year graduated: 1996
I acquired a Masters in European Business Administration at Newcastle Business School as part of my dual degree studies at Accadis Hochschule in Germany. I met some of my best friends on the course and Im still in contact with many of the people I met even though they are now based all over the world. I really value having studied in Germany and in Newcastle, because what I learned was quite different. In Germany, the focus was on knowledge acquisition. At Northumbria I found a stronger emphasis on management skills, personal development, strategy and visionary thinking. Both together were a perfect blend and Ive used the skills on my course throughout my career. My degree opened the door to my first job, with Accenture, the start of a 15 years long career. Later, I led IT strategy projects at McKinseys Business Technology Office and was a Director with Microsoft Germany until Spring 2011. I then fulfilled a dream and founded two companies. fempower.me helps board room members and women managers to break glass ceilings in their organisations. opengov.me helps politicians and public administrations make government more open and transparent. I learned in Newcastle, that you should follow your passions. Thats what I did and I love it.

BA (Hons) Mass Communication China
I chose Northumbria because it was highly recommended by my university in China. Also what appealed the most to me about the University was the Students Union because it has won several awards and is one of the best in the UK. I chose BA (Hons) Mass Communication because in China I studied communication for three years and I found it very enjoyable. This course covers some really interesting topics like celebrity and culture. These topics interest me a lot so this course seemed like a perfect choice for me. My first week at Northumbria was fascinating for me. I found many exciting things here. During our induction week there were many activities and informative sessions that I attended. It helped me a lot. I met the tutors and students and it gave me a chance to get information about my course. My favourite thing about University is the Students Union. When I first came to Newcastle they helped me a lot. I always went to the Students Union and Student Support and Wellbeing to seek help and they always guided and helped me. I like the IT facilities as well; desktop ANYWHERE in particular. It helps students access teaching materials very easily and I love how there are computers everywhere in the University - even if you are in the canteen, you can log in to your personal University space and access anything you want. My tutors are very friendly and helpful. I like the teaching style here. They make learning fun. They always help me with my essays and no matter how many questions I come up with during my lectures they always try their best to help me.

Student services are outstanding. The Careers and Employment team has turned out to be very helpful for me because when I came here I didnt even know how to write a CV but the careers advisor helped me to create a good CV. I also like the library because you can find any book you want. The most important thing I have learned here is not to be afraid of making mistakes. I saw the other students here were very confident and never reluctant to learn new things. So I also adopted this habit and it really helped me with my studies. I learned how to accustom myself to a different environment and at the same time I also learned how to be confident regardless of what situation I was faced with. For me, Northumbria is diverse, amiable and vibrant.

MA Media Cultures Pakistan

I chose Northumbria... because of its ranking in different university guides, its growing recognition in research and the fact that it offered a course perfectly catered to my needs. I chose Newcastle because... the North East of England is a beautiful place. I love the size of the city everything you need is around you. The student community is also great. Unlike some other major cities, it isnt very congested. It is a well developed city with affordable living expenses. My first week in Northumbria... was better than I expected. Being thousands of miles away from home, for the first time, can be quite a daunting experience but surprisingly Newcastle felt like home because of the friendly environment and so many exciting events arranged by the Students Union. I chose MA Media Cultures... because it offered me the ability to gain a thorough

understanding of media, culture and their interrelationship with society. Its structured to help students learn about all aspects of the media. The course not only offered me an opportunity to expand my knowledge but also broaden the horizons of my career opportunities facilitating my research, learning and career choices. My research... during my undergraduate course was one of the finest works I have ever done in my life. Studying here really helped me polish my research and communicational skills. It really motivated me to work harder this year in my postgraduate studies. When I am not studying... I work. I am currently working part-time in Northumbria University as the international marketing communications assistant. Its a lovely place to work. The rest of the time, I like

being at home, spending some quality time with family. The other things I do on campus... includes volunteering. I have been chosen as the International Rep and the Postgraduate Taught Rep. The roles mean I have to attend meetings and carry out discussions for improving the experience of students. For leisure, I sometimes go on trips with the Universitys One Planet programme and explore different towns and ancient cities in England. Tutors... are the best thing about the University. They are friends when you need help, mentors when you need guidance and the most knowledgeable people when you want to learn. It truly impresses me to see how knowledgeable they are they are experts in their fields. Northumbria for me is... inspiring, exciting and full of life-changing experiences!

BA (HONS) Performance Thailand
I chose Northumbria... because I heard that Newcastle is a really nice city and has a lot of nice theatres which I wanted to regularly visit during my course. I read some profiles of Northumbria graduates who studied performance and they really inspired me. Newcastle is... a fantastic city and there is so much nature all around. Its not very crowded or busy like most of the other cities in the UK. Its also cleaner and the people are friendlier. There are a lot of art galleries here and the architecture of Newcastle is also very interesting. I chose this course... because I have always been interested in performance and I have been doing drama all my life. Its what I am good at and I like it. When I was getting information about my course, I found out that Arts and Social Sciences is really nice and big. The performance space seemed good as well so it made my decision easier. I live in University accommodation... I love the location; its just two minutes walk to the library and the Students Union. The town is near too its close to everything. I really like living here because I have met so many people and my flatmates are also very nice. When I am not studying... I work part-time in a coffee shop. I visit art galleries and watch theatre in Newcastle. I just walk around the city to explore new things. I go to the gym in Sport Central which is really well-equipped. The facilities I like... include the library and Sport Central. The library is open 24 hours so its really convenient for me when I want to work late at night. I like how there are different floors for group and silent study. As for Sport Central, I simply love it because there are so many things to do there. I regularly go for boxing, yoga and swimming because it helps me stay relaxed. My tutors are... really nice, helpful and friendly. They are very welcoming and they always help me with anything I ask them. The important things I have learned so far in Northumbria... includes teamwork, handling different situations and communication skills. I have learned that its important to speak your mind and communicate with other people because it helps you to get a clear understanding of every situation. Northumbria for me is... exciting, knowledgeable and spontaneous.

I chose this course because of my interest in the construction field. The course is very well designed and the ranking for Built and Natural Environment is high as well. My first week in Northumbria was good. The welcome week really helped me settle down. People were very friendly and they helped me a lot. Newcastle is a vibrant place. I like the fact that its a historical city. I also like the cinemas and the social life here. My projects help me gain practical experience. Recently, as a part of my course, I went to Tyne Bridge with some civil engineers and took the measurements of the bridge. It was an interesting task for me and the experience was very good. The facilities I like include the library, IT facilities and other student support facilities. The eLearning Portal gives access to teaching material 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Its a great facility. The University has ASK sessions for international students which helps them develop their communication and academic writing skills. I have used the careers centre as well and they helped me to make a very good CV and cover letter. So the overall support from each department is great! After graduation I would like to stay here and do my postgrad at Northumbria.

I chose Northumbria... because it was among the few universities offering the specialist course I wanted and it has a good reputation. I chose this course... because I have always wanted to learn more about disasters, what causes them and how they can be prevented, especially after Hurricane Katrina. During my first week... I felt welcome; the students and staff were very helpful and accommodating. In my spare time... I try to visit different parts of the city and go to the gym for a fitness session. My accommodation... is comfortable

After I graduate... I would like to get a job within my area of study where I can apply the skills I have acquired and get more exposure and experience. My tutors... are very helpful. I chose this course... because I believe as you go through your career you should pick up a range of skills to keep your employability high. I was originally an architect, but I wanted to get into management so this course was ideal. During my first week in Northumbria... I found myself really enjoying studying despite the fact that I left university after my first degree 10 years ago so I wasnt used to studying. I really enjoy it. The relationship I have with the tutors, and the way Im doing my own research, I feel like Im working for myself, rather than working for my MSc. My research... is about sustainability in construction and how this is impacting

on architects in the UK. I think its an important subject for my own professional development. My tutors... are very good, very experienced and have a good practical background. In my spare time... I enjoy spending my time in Newcastle, its a nice city. Newcastle has all the services you need, good shopping and good people. I like the

PhD Mechanical Engineering Nigeria

I chose Northumbria because... after majoring in BEng Mechanical Engineering, I had the opportunity to go for further studies to the UK. I was assessing universities on factors such as academic excellence through high-quality research and teaching, and also, location. I was particularly interested in student friendly and low cost cities. Northumbria University was the only university that met my demands. Mechanical Engineering is... professionally accredited and has great industrial links, from concept formulation to the finished products. My friends who have graduated from this course are all highly placed in industry all over the world. The laboratories are well-equipped with modern facilities and up-to-date engineering software. The computer laboratory is specifically designed for numerical modelling and simulations. During my first week at Northumbria... I felt greatly motivated with the high level of modern learning equipment and facilities. More importantly, the attitude of lecturers inspired me and gave me the assurance of getting help whenever I need it. What I like the most about my course... is the fact that its well structured to accommodate both experimental and numerical study with fantastically experienced laboratory technicians to assist with laboratory work. The Graduate School encouraged and financially assisted me to present my research findings at conferences.

In my spare time... I spend quality time with my family in the beautiful landscape of the North East of England. I also like going to Northumbrias Sport Central. After I graduate... I am aiming to find a prestigious position in research and development, with the hope of becoming an investor in the education sector. My tutors are... fantastic! My supervisory team have been very helpful and understanding. We meet at least once a week in order to monitor progress and their help and support is always great. My favourite thing about University... is the postgraduate research development training programme. Favourite thing about Newcastle... is the fact that its a student-friendly city with beautiful countryside. The most important thing I have learned... is professionalism.

MSc Computing and Information Technology India
I chose Northumbria because it was recommended by a lot of people. It is also relatively cheap to live in Newcastle; it is a well-established student city so it seemed like a perfect package for me. My first week in Northumbria was good. I was a little homesick but meeting so many nice and friendly people here made me feel better. The teachers were very helpful as well. And with every passing day Newcastle felt like a home away from home. The most interesting part of my course is my professional project. I have to develop a database system along with doing some research work and I am really looking forward to starting to work on it because after coming here I have learned so many things and now I want to apply them to my professional project. My favourite thing about Newcastle is the nightlife! I always have a very nice time with my friends. My second favourite thing is the medical services. Unlike India, it is mostly free and easy to sign up. They provide very good health support for students. When I am not studying I am working. I have got a part-time job at McDonalds. Apart from that, I like exploring new places so I mostly just go out and see new places. I like going to the beaches and parks. My most memorable moment in the University is when my group came top for a presentation. We really worked hard for it and the appreciation made it worthwhile. The most important thing I have learned so far is time management. I learned to multi-task and manage everything. I do my household chores, my University assignments and manage my work as well. I have learned to live independently and make my own decisions. My time in Northumbria has been really great. I made really nice friends from all over the world and I am experiencing new and exciting things every day.

What do you like most about the course? Before I came here I thought design was everything, but Ive learned that I need to take a wider view. I still believe that design is the key to a more logical world, but its part of a wider strategy. The course has also opened my eyes about research and innovation. Can you give an example of a piece of work youve been involved in? Weve been doing some work for Newcastle City Council, looking at conditions of signage related to parking problems. Its good, because we get the chance to work on live projects with different kinds of clients, which gives us a flavour of working in the real world. What do you do when youre not studying? Ive been doing some volunteer work through a group called Northumbria Student Community Action (NSCA). I help out designing software applications for disabled people to improve accessibility. Volunteer work has given me a chance to meet people who are already engaged with the technology. Its also good socially, to meet people from different backgrounds. What would you like to do when you graduate? Im interested in product development so ideally Id work as part of an R&D team. Eventually Id like to do a PhD, looking into new innovations. How do you get on with your tutors? All of the tutors have good industrial experience. Theyre good at engaging the students I never feel like Im just sat in a classroom. Its easy to get one-to-one time with them if I ever have problems.

Whats your favourite thing about Newcastle? Its a very multicultural and studentorientated city. Its at the centre of a host of different environments you can see city life, countryside and the seaside too.

Xiaoyu Chen

Master of Education (MEd) with Teaching and Learning china

I chose Northumbria because... I did some research on the ranking for education in UK universities and Northumbria came out near the top. I wanted to study my Masters qualification outside China and my parents had already recommended that I look at the UK for the history, the language and also because it is a safe country in which to study. I knew that it would be intense study because a Masters at home in China takes three years rather than just one but I thought this could also be an advantage. As it turns out I now feel that it is a disadvantage because I like it so much here I wish I was staying for longer. I really like Newcastle because... it seems familiar to me. My home city in the north of China has a number of churches and cathedrals so I am used to seeing these kinds of buildings. The shopping here is great and the people are really kind, polite and helpful. I live in University accommodation which is very near the city centre so its very easy for me to go out shopping as often as I can, but because there is a free bus to Coach Lane Campus it is also easy for me to get to my lectures as well. When Im not studying I like to... use the Universitys sports centre, especially the swimming pool and the running machines in the gym. Sport Central really is amazing, and has everything in one place which I wasnt expecting after my experiences as an undergraduate at home in China. One of my greatest achievements since arriving is... making a cake for my roommates birthday. We are a group of Chinese students that share the kitchen so I decided that I would make tiramisu for a special occasion. It was my first attempt at making things using unfamiliar kitchen equipment. I think I have adapted pretty well! In fact so well that I now love fish and chips and sausage rolls. British food is pretty good really. Im really pleased with my choice of course... although like everyone else, I found the research skills tough at first after my previous learning experiences.

I chose Northumbria because I talked to a family friend who told me about Northumbria University. I had a look on the internet and when I saw the modules available for the MPH programme, I knew immediately that it was Northumbria I wanted and I made no hesitation in applying for the programme. My favourite part of the course every bit of my experience at Northumbria was exciting and thrilling. The serene and relaxing atmosphere of Coach Lane Campus was the best. Add to that the cooperation and assistance of the staff of my department, the IT facilities and vast resources in the library, all of which made the programme very easy and exciting. I savoured every moment of my stay at Coach Lane Campus. I was able to attend so many health programmes and conferences and this experience has given me more confidence in my field. The best things about Northumbria for me would be the location of the University coupled with the warm welcome received by international students from arrival, through your course of study, graduation and even after graduation with the alumni foundation. For me it was a great experience. When I graduated I went back to Nigeria because my mission was to get a foreign experience and relate it to the Nigerian experience. As a medical doctor I commenced my residency training immediately in a general hospital back in Nigeria and it has been a very rewarding and fulfilling experience. My degree from Northumbria University has given me the edge over my colleagues here in Nigeria. I have been able to relate everything that I learnt to my residency training programme. All the academic materials and information I collated during my programme has given my career back here in Nigeria a headstart.

MSC PHYSIOTHERAPY STUDIES india

I chose Northumbria because A friend of mine had studied here in the past and it sounded like a great university. I looked at the course options for study in the UK. I was already working in a Rehabilitation Centre and I wanted to learn more about current and future physiotherapy practice. Studying at Northumbria I am really glad that I came here to study. The way that we study is so different to what I have been used to in India. I really value the personal responsibility I have been given to research the facts myself and then to discuss them with my classmates and the teachers. I had never really thought about things before I had just written them down because thats what the teacher said. Now I am able to really analyse all aspects of my own practice as well as that of other people. It was a real honour for me to have been selected as the best project of the whole course and I am glad that my hard work was recognised by the University. I was presented with a cheque for 600 and this really was a very nice surprise! Now that Ive graduated I plan to stay on in the UK and work in physiotherapy. I applied for professional registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and have been looking for physiotherapy assistant jobs. I got my registration so I am now allowed to work as a qualified physiotherapist in the UK. I really hope that I can use the knowledge and skills I have gained to work as a physiotherapist for the National Health Service (NHS).

be to come here and find out for yourself. I absolutely recommend Northumbria University! If you work hard on your course and project you may end up getting a nice surprise like I did at the end.

Andrew Toh
LLB (Hons) Malaysia
I chose Northumbria... because Northumbria is one of the leading modern universities in the UK. For my course it is ideal to be involved in a lot of practical experience and what appealed to me about Northumbria was how they have incorporated the opportunity to gain practical experience in the course structure. The law clinic here gives students a very real insight into their future professional lives. Newcastle is... a student city and all the students are very helpful towards each other. The environment is really good and you will feel like its one of the safest cities in the UK. My favourite thing about Newcastle is... the weather. I really liked the winter here and now Im looking forward to spring and summer. My favourite thing about the course is... the timetable. It gives you a lot of gaps in between the classes and seminars so I get time to revise, work on my assignments and learn more things. Also if I ever miss a lecture, I can use this time to catch up on the topics I have missed. When I am not studying... I work in a restaurant in China Town. I also like sports and I play ultimate frisbee in the University. At the moment we are setting up a frisbee team for Northumbria. My tutors... are highly qualified. They have a deep understanding of the subjects they teach. Their guidance for me is always very helpful. The different student services... have always been very beneficial. Initially I was helped by the Meet and Greet staff who picked me up from the airport and helped me on my first day here. Afterwards I have used the Careers and Employment Centre and Student Support and Wellbeing quite a lot of times. They are always willing to give advice. The career events that I have attended were very informative. All the firms that visit the University are very prominent in the industry and they provide a huge range of career opportunities. Favourite thing about University... is the library. The environment in the library is very encouraging for studies. During my time here, I learned... that if you want something, you can always achieve it with hard work. Its important to set goals for yourself and then to work hard to achieve those goals. My advice to the prospective students... would be to stay in the University accommodation for the first year at least. Its easy to settle into University life and there wont be any worries about bills, different facilities and finding flatmates. My time in Northumbria so far has been... challenging, inspiring and rewarding.

LLM International Trade Law Nigeria
I chose Northumbria... for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because Newcastle is very student-friendly and beautiful and secondly, because Law has a team of experienced staff who provide excellent support and insight on career choices. I chose this course... because the International Trade Law course modules allow for routes in either public or private international commercial law. The structure of the course has helped shape the kind of legal practice I want to be involved with in the future. It covers legal and practical issues that are very relevant in international trade. The knowledge I have gained will definitely improve my opportunities back in Nigeria. My first week in Northumbria... I must commend law on the reception provided. There was a Meet and Greet team who welcomed us to Newcastle and a schedule of events was planned to acclimatise us with the city and University. My favourite thing about the course... is that it provides real knowledge that will be most relevant in my country. The lecturers are very competent and have practical experience in the legalese of global commerce. My tutors... are very friendly and experienced. One of my recent projects... was a paper on trademark (intellectual property) and the research materials are fantastic. Law has a portal of legal data that allows its students access to huge resources like Westlaw, Lexis library, Heinonline, etc. The library is well-equipped and open 24/7. When we need books that arent held at the library, an inter-library loan request can be made. When I am not studying... I go to the University gym Sport Central and it is absolutely amazing! It is well equipped with almost every facility. I enjoy working out there. I also enjoy watching football at weekends in Habita, the student bar. My favourite thing about Newcastle... is that it has a very rich history. There are lots of places to explore from the Angel of the North to Hadrians Wall. The people are always polite, nice and friendly. I remember when I first came into Newcastle I never had any problems with directions because people were always happy to help point me in the right direction. My time in Northumbria has been... enlightening, interesting and fun.

Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) Malaysia
I chose Northumbria... because of the 160 million state-of-the-art campus redevelopment. I was attracted to Laws updated image as it showed their dedication in keeping ahead of the times for the benefit of the new generation of students like me. It even has its own mock court rooms to give students a realistic feeling of being in court besides the implementation of new technological developments to assist in teachings. I chose this course... because it was recommended for those after their undergraduate law degree who plan to practice as a barrister, and for those who plan to be a lawyer back home in Malaysia. It is a tough and intense course but there are many practical skills you learn such as advocacy skills that you wont learn outside the course. My first week in Northumbria... was very exciting as I had taken a gap year after my Law LLB undergraduate and was ready to get back to studying. My favourite thing about the course... is that although it is a one-year course and is intense, I like the challenge! The hard work pays off and its a great feeling. I like the way the course is designed; it prepares

students for what to do and expect in the real legal world. My projects... Im working in Northumbria Universitys award-winning Student Law Office (SLO) which works like a proper legal firm. I have had real clients come in regarding their legal problems. Its been really interesting meeting people from different walks of life. It involves interviewing the client regarding their problem and conducting legal research and providing practical advice. It is timeconsuming but the skills learnt working in

the SLO are priceless. Ive always believed in giving back to the community and helping provide legal advice to those who need it. When I am not studying... its important for me to relax. As the BPTC is a very intense course one needs to be mentally prepared to do hard work. After I graduate... Id like to travel around Europe before I go back to Malaysia. Besides that, Ive always had an interest in human rights law and I hope to work in the United Nations one day.

I chose Northumbria... because the University has a strong international impact based on its external network, partnerships with reputable organisations, research and innovations that make a difference. I chose Northumbria... because of its good reputation and the sports centre. As I was intending to study sports, it was important for me to consider the sports facilities of the University and since Northumbria has invested a lot of money in the sports centre, the facilities are really up to the mark. Newcastle... is nice. I used to study in a small town back in Hong Kong, so I chose Newcastle because its not too big but its still big enough and is a really good change for me. I chose this course... because I always wanted to study this subject. The structure of the course is really good and it gives me an opportunity to learn more about the human body and the affect that exercise has on our bodies. My first week in Northumbria was... a new experience. It was different and good. I loved how big the campus is and I met my coursemates and a lot of new people. My favourite thing about the University is... Sport Central. The equipment in the sports centre is really good and so is the facility. When I am not studying... I work part-time in a restaurant, hang out with my friends and play badminton at the sports centre. I am in the Universitys badminton team. Sometimes we also have a night out for our hall of residence which I really enjoy. After I graduate... I would like to look for a specialised course that will benefit my future aim of becoming a nutritionist. My tutors are... really nice and helpful. They are always there to help me with my problems. My favourite thing about Newcastle... is an entertainment complex called The Gate. It has the most wonderful night life. I sometimes also go there with my friends to watch a movie. My most memorable moments in the University... are the ones where I have spent time training with my badminton team.

Diploma in Medical Sciences/Medical Degree canada
I chose Northumbria... because I wanted to study with a group of students who would be globally minded like myself. My motivation to become a doctor stems from my desire to help others who lack access to medical care around the world. It seemed very fitting to join a programme geared towards others with similar interests. Medicine appeals to me because of the opportunity to make a very tangible difference in peoples lives. During my first week in Northumbria... I was excited to be in a new place, a bit nervous about starting a new programme, but really pleased to finally be beginning my journey towards becoming a doctor. My favourite thing about the course... was the tutors. They were really excellent, teaching in a clear and memorable way, and caring about the students and the quality of doctors they would become. Many of the students in the term ahead of us were also very inspiring and were great models of what the rest of us should be striving to become. In my spare time... whenever possible, we made trips to the coast, and also explored the countryside. We also enjoyed the proximity to Scotland, and did some hiking there. During the term, I facilitated a weekly anatomy session. What I liked about Newcastle... is the surrounding countryside and also the old buildings and the history which is evident everywhere. After I graduate... I would like to practise in developing countries, either as a general surgeon, or as an obstetrician.

Mikhail Shebalkov
BA (Hons) Finance and Investment Management Russia
What I like the most about my course is the opportunity to practice what we learn. We use Bloomberg terminals which is a great facility for finance students. By using these terminals, we gained some really valuable experience and it made learning easier. The teachers are also highly qualified, they have a lot of practical experience so their approach to teaching always makes the subject interesting. Newcastle is a lively city and is also known for its social life. I like the size of the city; its not too big and crowded so its nice living here. And the people are very friendly. My favorite thing about University is the library. There are plenty of computers and all the books and journals I need. There are dedicated rooms for private study so I can go and work there any time I want. I can find anything I need, not just related to my course but also related to my other interests. A piece of work I have recently been involved with was developing a website and programming special tools to prepare articles for the website. The aim was to educate people about the financial models they can use. Its an entrepreneur project. The most important thing I have learned during my stay here... is the importance of team work and how it helps you to develop different useful skills. Northumbria inspires me to work harder and be there to help others. Some people from Russia who came here for a PhD are now professors. They inspire me to work hard and achieve my goals. Also, the people here are very helpful and its really nice to see how they are always there for you. Northumbria for me is experience, opportunity and community.

I chose this course because they make sure you get work placement opportunities if you perform well. Northumbria University really helps students gain international experience. Theres a lot of choice; we can go to South Korea, Japan, USA, Australia; you can go anywhere you want but you need to work hard for that. You need to pass the interview and maintain good scores. A lot of universities had the same course but the fact that Northumbria gave the work placement appealed the most to me. What I like most about Newcastle I love the people here because they have been really nice to me. Ive made some really good friends here. I love the Quayside, its really beautiful. I like Newcastle city centre and visiting Durham. Newcastle is really good for students and unlike other popular cities in the UK its not crowded and expensive. University accommodation I lived in university accommodation in my first year. I was in Quay Point. I liked it; I felt very safe. My tutors Its really easy to get along with the tutors in seminars here because you can communicate directly with them. Whenever I need help I email them or arrange a tutorial they are always there to help! Work placement opportunities Last summer I went to Disney Orlando, USA for my work placement for three months and I had a great experience. I have also been offered a work placement/degree programme for next year in France. I will get my second degree there and following graduation Ill stay there for a work placement opportunity during the summer, which to me is simply amazing! Coming here has given me opportunities that I never had before! When I am not studying I have a part-time job in a store. Besides that I volunteer for different projects. I work as a group leader for Global Mania, a group created by Newcastle Business School for international events and festivals. We are planning to arrange lots of exciting events this year! I also volunteer for the Friends International scheme to help international students settle in. My best friend is an ambassador for Volunteer Northumbria, working with children so I also help him out with things.

MSc Business with Management Pakistan
I chose this course because it gave me the option to study a more diverse range of topics. I am studying HR, marketing, finance and supply chain management, so all these subjects will help me in my career. I will have better employment prospects because I will have knowledge about all aspects of business. What I like most about Newcastle... is the accessibility. I have been to other cities in the UK but when it comes to Newcastle, the transportation, access to the malls, access to any store, to any place, is a lot easier. Its mostly within walking distance or bus travel. There is also a very good student environment in the city. I love the history and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it. What I like most about the facilities... the library is open 24/7 so I have never had any problems in accessing research materials or books. The IT facilities are up to the mark. Everything is accessible online and the support service is good as well. The Students Union is great. They are always there to listen to your views and help you out. My most memorable time... is the time I have spent making friends here and, of course, the day of my undergraduate graduation. My parents came from Pakistan for my graduation and I could see I had made them proud, that was my biggest achievement. The most important thing I have learned here is how to be a really good team player and how to be a good role model. During my time here I became more confident. Studying at Northumbria has really helped me open up more and has made me able to confidently face challenges. Northumbria inspires me The way it has developed during the few past years is totally remarkable. It inspires me to work hard and be honest because thats when the success comes. Its an honest organisation because its evident from the development that whatever we are giving to the University, the University is also giving back to us in the form of better education and facilities. Northumbria for me is... exciting, practical and approachable.

Fees and savings

Value for money
Why studying at Northumbria makes academic and financial sense
Cost is an important factor for most students and we fully appreciate what a big investment you are making in your future. Fortunately the cost of living in Newcastle compares very favourably with many other parts of the UK. We also have a number of measures in place to help make your study more affordable. International students can save money on our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees by paying early. In addition, our undergraduate tuition fees are frozen from your start date, meaning you will know exactly how much your full course will cost with no inflationary increases in subsequent years. If you decide to go on to study at postgraduate level, either immediately or in the future, you will benefit from our Alumni Discount where we reduce your tuition fee by 10%.

Some frequently asked questions about fees

Why is the overseas fee more than the UK fee?
This is because students classed as home students (which also includes EU students) have a proportion of their fees funded by the UK Government. For international students, the University receives no UK Government funding and students are responsible for the full cost of their tuition. This is reflected in the overseas fee paid by international students.

Will I save money if I pay early?

Yes, for the majority of courses there is an early payment discount if you pay your full annual overseas fees in advance. This ranges from 500 to 260. For international students starting in January 2013 there is a 500 reduction if the full fees are received before 1 October 2012 or a 260 reduction if full fees are received before 1 December 2012. For international students starting in September 2013 there is a 500 reduction if full fees are received before 1 June 2013 and a 260 reduction if full fees are received before 1 August 2013. Please note that as the discount is applied when the funds are processed in the UK we recommend you allow at least 12 days before the dates above if you are paying via one of Northumbrias Regional Offices.

What is included in your overseas fees?

The fees cover your tuition and a range of extras. These include: Our Meet and Greet Service which runs at busy times of the year. Here we pick you up from Newcastle Airport and we take you to your University accommodation. You will also receive a welcome pack. Our International Induction Programme, to help you settle in*. Free English language in-sessional tuition during your degree course (if required). Access to a huge range of student welfare services and facilities. These include our Careers Centre, which has dedicated support for international students, and our award-winning libraries.

Visit our fee calculator: www. northumbria.ac.uk/coursesearch

Am I rewarded if I stay with Northumbria?

Yes, for postgraduate courses there is an Alumni Discount of 10%. Our Alumni Discount means that if you have previously completed a degree at Northumbria, or are progressing onto a postgraduate taught or research course, you will qualify for a 10% discount on one years tuition fees**.

This will provide an estimate of the fee you will pay, including any discounts you may be entitled to. From our course search feature on our website, select a course then click on the fees tab to access our fees calculator. All courses are priced in UK pounds, however, we have added a currency converter to help you get an approximate idea of cost in your own currency.

Will my undergraduate tuition fees go up each year?

No, if you start an undergraduate course the overseas tuition fees will be fixed for each year of study, so you can be sure of what the actual cost will be with no inflationary increases.
* There may be some small additional charges to cover excursions or travel on optional parts of the international induction programme. ** Terms and conditions apply, visit our website for further information.
