What Causes Earthquakes?

That so unds like a silly questio n. An earthquake is o f co urse when the gro und is shaking. In my life I have experienced do zens o f earthquakes. So me are mere jo lts, so me are quick shakes, so me are gentle ro ller and a few (thank Go d no t to o many) are lo ng shakers. So metimes a large truck go es by and rattles the windo ws and even that will get my heart po unding. So , again, what is an earthquake?

An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip o n a fault. The tecto nic plates are always slo wly mo ving, but they get stuck at their edges due to frictio n. When the stress o n the edge o verco mes the frictio n, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel thro ugh the earths crust and cause the shaking that we feel. In Califo rnia there are two plates the Pacific Plate and the No rth American Plate. The Pacific Plate co nsists o f mo st o f the Pacific Ocean flo o r and the Califo rnia Co ast line. The No rth American Plate co mprises mo st the No rth American Co ntinent and parts o f the Atlantic Ocean flo o r. The primary bo undary between these two plates is the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault is mo re than 6 50 miles lo ng and extends to depths o f at least 10 miles. Many o ther smaller faults like the Hayward (No rthern Califo rnia) and the San Jacinto (So uthern Califo rnia) branch fro m and jo in the San Andreas Fault Zo ne. The Pacific Plate grinds no rthwestward past the No rth American Plate at a rate o f abo ut two inches per year. Parts o f the San Andreas Fault system adapt to this mo vement by co nstant creep resulting in many tiny sho cks and a few mo derate earth tremo rs. In o ther areas where creep is NOT co nstant, strain can build up fo r hundreds o f years, pro ducing great earthquakes when it finally releases. My most terrifying earthquake experience

My mo st terrifying earthquake experience did no t happen in So uthern Califo rnia where I have lived almo st my who le life and have, there, experienced do zens o f earthquakes. The first earthquake I remember was the 6 .6 Sylmar quake which jo lted So uthern Califo rnia at 6 a.m. February 9 , 19 71. I was at a friends ho use getting ready fo r scho o l when the ho use started shaking vio lently. I recall running do wn a hallway and bo uncing o ff the walls, side to side o n my way o ut o f the ho use. The mo st terrifying earthquake experience Ive ever had actually happened in Las Vegas o n January 17, 19 9 4 at 4:30 a.m. I was staying at the, then, luxurio us Excalibur Ho tel with so me friends. We were asleep o n the 22 flo o r when we were awo ken by the ro cking and swaying ho tel ro o m. It was so stro ng I panicked, leaped fro m bed and bo lted to to wards the do o r. I quickly remembered where I was and realized that I was no t go ing to get do wn 22 flights o f stairs in time to save my life if the ho tel to wer fell. The ro o m was still shaking as mo ved to the windo w to see what was go ing o n o utside and o n the Vegas Strip belo w. I saw the water in the swimming po o l splashing o ut o n to the deck but no thing mo re. There were no falling buildings o r crashing cars and peo ple were no t running aro und in a panic. At this time an interco m speaker came to life and so meo ne in the ho tel anno unced that there had been an earthquake but everything was safe. The shaking sto pped and so o n after I went back to sleep with no further incident. The next mo rning we learned that o ur ho tel was shaking, no t due to a large quake in the Las Vegas area but fro m a 6 .7 temblo r lo cated in No rthridge, Califo rnia. Only 30 miles o r so fro m my ho me! We all called ho me to see if there was any damage o r injury to o ur ho me o r lo ved o nes. Thankfully everything in Orange Co unty was fine but in Lo s Angeles there were fires, buckled ro ads and emergency perso nnel wo rking hard to rescue affected citizens. In all, 57 peo ple died in this quake. Oddly, many peo ple we spo ke to in Las Vegas the fo llo wing mo rning did no t feel anything. I guess it was stro ng eno ugh to ro ck tall buildings but peo ple o n the gro und co uld did feel anything. I still amazes me that the quake was no t clo ser to Las Vegas with the amo unt o f ro cking and swaying I felt that night. I ho pe that I am no t in a high rise ho tel o r building when the BIG ONE hits.

Invention of the Richter Scale

Charles Francis Richter created the Richter Scale as a fo rm o f seismic earthquake measurement in Califo rnia in 19 35. It was designed fo r a particular study in Califo rnia and using a Wo o d-Anderso n to rsio n seismo graph. Measurements were taken at a distance o f 10 0 kilo meters (6 2 mi) fro m the earthquakes epicenter with the go al o f quantifying medium-sized earthquakes (between magnitude 3.0 and 7.0 ) . The Richter Scale has an upper limit o n the highest measurable magnitude and the magnitude beco mes unreliable fo r measurements taken at a distance o f mo re than abo ut 6 0 0 kilo meters (370 mi) fro m the epicenter

Richter Scale Replaced as Earthquake Measure by MMS

In the 19 70 s a new scale was develo ped to replace the Richter Scale. This scale was called the Mo ment Magnitude Scale o r MMS. Mo st co untries no w the MMS scale to measure medium to large earthquakes. The scale is based o n the seismic mo ment o f the earthquake, which is equal to the rigidity o f the Earth multiplied by the average amo unt o f slip o n the fault and the size o f the area that slipped. It is co nsidered a far mo re accurate measurement o f larger earthquakes than the Richt e r Scale , but breaks do wn o n smaller size earthquakes. The scales used are the same fo r bo th MMS and Richter meaning that a 4 measurement is 10 x sto nger than a 3 o n each scale.

Another Scale Improves Upon The Richter Scale

Ano ther scale that is uses is the Mercalli Intensity Scale. This do es no t measure the magnitude o f an earthquake rather, it quantifies the effects o f an earthquake o n the Earths surface, humans, o bjects o f nature, and man-made structures o n a scale fro m I (no t felt) to XII (to tal destructio n). The co rrelatio n between magnitude and intensity is far fro m to tal, depending upo n several facto rs including the depth o f the earthquake, terrain, po pulatio n density, and damage. On May 19 , 20 11 an earthquake o f magnitude 0 .7 in Central Califo rnia, United States 4 km deep was classified as o f intensity III by the United States Geo lo gical Survey (USGS) o ver 10 0 miles away fro m the epicenter (and II intensity almo st 30 0 miles fro m the epicenter), while a 4.5 magnitude quake in Salta, Argentina 16 4 km deep was o f intensity I. Large st Re co rde d Quake using Richt e r Scale , MMS and Me rcalli The largest reco rded earthquake using bo th the MMS and Mercalli Intensity Scale was the 19 6 0 Chilean earthquake that Mo ment Magnitude Scale measured 9 .5 o n the Mo ment Magnitude Scale and XI o n the Mercalli Intensity Scale.
