The Demand for Maritime Personnel

The labour situation within the maritime sector is a topic that attracts much attention worldwide. Many fear we are entering a period where a massive shortage of qualified personnel can, among other factors, represent a possible threat to both quality and safety standards. At the same time, customers, authorities and other stakeholders constantly increase their demand for higher quality, precision, safety and corporate social responsibility. Based on this complex situation, the maritime industry worldwide is expected to have a strong focus on recruiting new, qualified personnel in years to come.

High Quality Training: a Necessity

For ship owners and operators, competence is the key to safety, reliability and economy. Safety reduces the risk of injuries to personnel and minimizes the risk of damage to the environment. Reliability minimizes the ever increasing cost of being off-hire. A well run engine room managed by competent people improves economy. Onboard training using real equipment presents a number of challenges. Increased risk to personnel and equipment combined with limited access to required marine assets and related escalating costs are creating increased demand for simulation technology. Simulation under highly realistic circumstances presents a safer and more cost-efficient training alternative. Simulation has already proven its effectiveness and is, without doubt, the future of maritime training. Due to the almost unlimited possibilities provided by simulation, better results can be achieved in a safer, more efficient manner, which in turn produces higher quality personnel.

The Need for Simulators in the Maritime Industry

Different tasks different needs
Investment in maritime simulators is no longer limited to just the largest academies and organizations. Todays simulator customers represent a broad mix of different organizations, from public training academies and universities, training centres and vocational schools, to shipping and oil & gas companies, as well as military training organizations including Navies, Coast Guards and Maritime Police. Accordingly, engine room simulators must be flexible to meet the users various needs. Simulators today can be delivered tailor-made, ensuring that both functionality and cost meet the exact requirements of the user. Main switchboard panels at STC Rotterdam, the Netherlands

The importance of realism

The importance of process understanding is crucial for optimum engine control and for handling crisis and abnormal situations. Proper simulator training will reduce accidents and improve efficiency, and give the engineers experience and confidence in their job situation. To avoid negative learning, it is a necessity that the simulation training is highly realistic and adaptable to real life situations. The latest maritime simulation technology provides impressive integration between engine room simulator and real vessel control systems, which gives a new level of realism, as engineers can train on exactly the same equipment that they will find onboard a real vessel. Educating the best personnel

Compared to conventional training, simulators offer a more structured method of building high levels of competence. During simulation training, one can isolate and freeze each sub-system to understand and acquire knowledge, perform critical operations over and over again to train skills, and test and develop attitudes by training in situations that demand complex decision making. Through use of advanced assessment systems, simulator training can help isolate areas requiring improvement, and allows the instructor to tailor training exercises. In this way, the training will focus on bringing out the best in each student.

Customer Feedback

Kalmar Maritime Academy, Sweden

Kalmar Maritime Academy has since 1977 used maritime simulators from KONGSBERG. Since then, our simulator park has grown continuously with the system developments from the company. We have a very close and professional relationship with the supplier and when KONGSBERG developed the solution of interfacing NEPTUNE engine room simulator to the K-Chief automation system, Kalmar Maritime Academy was the first site to install this system giving the possibility to train students on actual integrated automation systems, taking simulator training a huge step forward. Being in a position to offer training on real on-board, hands on systems with the latest available simulator technology will put the students in an environment identical to what they will meet as officers, once graduated. This simulator gives us unique possibility to offer more realistic training to both existing students and shipping companies. Jan Snberg, Head, Kalmar Maritime Academy, Sweden

Georgian College, Canada

A visionary product from KONGSBERG, BigView has not only replaced the mimic panel, but represents a quantum leap forward in cost-effective visualization functionality for full mission training. With the new NEPTUNE Instructor based full mission and desktop systems installed and operational, we have come to appreciate a number of the finer features that have made development of course material and instruction more streamlined then ever possible. As an instructor, I have the flexibility of developing exercises at any PC, whether in the office or at home. I recently developed on the order of 30 exercises in a record period of four hours. Previous to NEPTUNE, this was an impossible feat. Further, by having the simulation software installed on my notebook computer, I have the flexibility of taking the simulator into a traditional classroom setting, freeing up precious full mission simulation time for other instructors. As part of the simulator upgrade, it became evident to us that the Long Term System Support Program (LTSSP) represented piece of mind. We view our LTSSP as a longterm investment in both our system as well as the long-standing relationship we have enjoyed with Kongsberg. I would challenge anyone in the world to do a better job in engine room simulation than what is currently offered at our facility. Bryan D. Gelyk, Senior Engineering Instructor, Georgian College, Canada

Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research (STAR) Center, USA

We are pleased to report that the NEPTUNE engine room simulator desktop systems have met our high expectations and are currently a part of US Coast Guard approved training programs conducted at STAR Center. The NEPTUNE operating system is very impressive and gives the instructor significant flexibility in building and running challenging simulation exercises. Unique scenarios can be developed using pre-programmed embedded faults, and student performance can easily be monitored and assessed. The ability to replay the exercises is also a very valuable tool for the instructor. The graphic user interface on the instructor and student stations is very intuitive and easy to use. We also find the e-Coach capabilities very useful and have taken advantage of this feature to develop tutorials for introduction of certain topics. The most important factor in selecting Kongsberg was the extensive modeling that backs up each of their simulation programs. The years of development work shows in the accuracy and realism of the simulation models. Brian Long, Director, STAR Center , USA
