0 TASK ONE : ESSAY WRITING

TASK 1 Social Networking Sites (SNS) are websites with applications which allow users to create a personalized profile and connect with others including friends. Nowadays, social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Blog, and the newest one is Marshable.Com are the communications of technology all around the world which the people can communicate and sharing information each others. George Rodman (2010) said blogging became a cool thing to do in 2002, and by 2008 there were more than 100 million blogs online. Diary-type blogs were at first written primarily by teenagers, but social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace took over that function in 2007. Michele (2008) said that these communications tools are fast becoming a favorite among teenagers. A 2007 report by the Pew Internet and American Life Project reveals that 55% of youth 12 to 17 years of age use social networking sites and seventeen percent of youth reported social networking sites as 1 of the 2 most common activities that they engaged in when using the internet. Based on her opinion, we do not agree with the statement Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as blogging have destroyed communication between friends and family because in our opinion, this kind of communication can strengthen relationship between friends and family as well as others. As a people who also involve in social networking sites, we admit that social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Blog and so on make our communications between friends and family become more closer and these social networking sites do not destroyed communications but it make the connections become more easier and more faster. Mr. Gboyega Adelowore said in George Rodman (2010), Social networking sites are platforms that make social engagement a lot easier. It is not just about making friends but also engaging brands for products and services. If we stay to use the conventional communication in this twenty-first century that create many updated technologies, people will say we are outdated about social networking sites and the most pitiful part is they will laugh at you because you do not have Facebook, Twitter or Blog. According to George Rodman (2010), an inability to use the internet puts an individual at a distinct disadvantage in today globalization world. According to the importance of using the internet, we cannot blame the social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Blog which are created to connect relation between family and friends. It proved that the social networking sites do not destroyed the communications between friends and family but these sites make the communications among them become more firm and persistent. Not only that, Social Networking Sites (SNS) can be the best place to all people from all over the world gather to find new friends, especially students to exchange their idea and 2

experiences with other students whether their same course or different course of study. According to University of The Pacific, social networking sites can be the best way to create ties between students with similar interests and goals including staff, faculty and even alumni. These connections will bring benefits if they can use the social networking sites for a good purpose and try to avoid making the social networking sites as a space to people make sexual solicitation and harassment. Based on measure that carried out by Michele and Kimberly (2008), two types of online interpersonal victimization were queried: unwanted sexual solicitation and internet harassment. We always hear about prevent is better than cure in order to prevent this internet victimizations become more severe, it is better for us to take precautions. So, the SNS can bring us positive effects if we see it based on its advantages in making communications between friends and family more effective even though face-to-face communications more suitable for close distance. In addition, SNS is one of the medium for us to keep in touch with old friends in primary school, secondary school, college, as well as other friends. With this kind of facilities, we can know their latest news, activities, relationship and other information that they share on their profile or their page. We can access their information everywhere from different various places in this world whenever we want and as well as communication with them either video call or online chatting such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and so on. Some people like to use the social networking sites as their diaries to make other people know about their life or their experiences towards something that they have been through either sweet or sad memories that can give other people inspirations or motivations. One of the young blogger in New York in 2006, Emily Gould updated her personal blog everyday and described her blog as a way to let a few hundred people know what she was reading and watching and thinking about. Through this, she was offered the job of editor at the gossip blog Gawker. Not only that, she found that technologies just enables us to overshare on a different scale (Emily Gould, 2006 in George Rodman, 2010, page 274). In conclusion, we should realize the important of SNS in making our communication between friend, family and others more effectives and faster in this modern century. A social networking site does not destroy the communications between us and them based on its role in making a world of instant communications to our fingertips but it just reduce the communications between friend and family. Through the evidences that networking site does not destroy the communications, we are sure that the SNS can bring more advantage rather than disadvantages. So, as a modern generation, we should realize the revolution that take place in our world and we cannot overlook about this phenomena if we do not want to be left behind from this kind of technology. 3
