Dear friends,

God is so good! I feel as if our cup is full and about to run over! So many good things filled the first tv/o months of this year that I want to share th^ with you. At a pre-birthday par*^'/. Sharon .before she went back to school at raith Academy in January, I was pleased to hear ABS graduate Wilson Lopez bring a fine
devotional. It's exciting to observe progress in the faith of one's students.

As classes began January 5 and I practiced with the choir and quartets for our special program, 1 marvelled at the young people who could sing with me an a half, and then go to their own special practice for the Rhetorjcal_program held on January 30one of the best I've ever seen. January was also full of planning meet ings, preparing for closing events in February and the summer. Amazing hart much time is swallowed up in such meetings. Once I asked Carolyn to go tell a ccrtain woman to come, and Carolyn, thinking it was one of cur all-inclusive women's meetings, went around telling all the Seminary women to attendwe had a full house and a good laugh.

Hello friends,

Alot of events have taken place since our last newsletter.

like to share some of them with you.

We!d

The Gospel Travelaires, composed of six young men plus Scott and ABS professor Federico Bueno, launched out on their summer evangelism March 1 by journeying to our Christian high school in Calinaoan for Religious Emphasis Week. Twenty-one accepted Christ at NIA, Since

then the Gospel Travelaires have been at Pudtol (5 baptisms), and

Bagu (15 baptisms). I think perhaps I learned more than the 26 young adults who attended our first Retreat for that age group March 26-28, Nervous
because I was the initiator^ planner, and director, I learned that God is more than able to handle ALL my needs, and keep me calm, loving, and wise beyond my capabilities. According to their comments, many of

the young people also experienced growth in Christ (our theme).

Immediately following the Retreat was the Senior Camp, with 79 campers. The Gospel Travelaires were in the camp as advisers, teachers, and some as campers * it was a fine week although there were no confessions made. Last week was Intermediate Camp with 50 campersi Junior Camp is
now going on under Dennis McKinney, Our DVBS Clinic was well-attended by over forty girls and women

studying the lessons for "Jesus-I'm HisHe*s Mine," I hope you'll send us your VBS leftover materials so we can use them in our teaching clinic next year, I brought.devotions each night to the girls, and we shared personal requests and tears in our small group prayer sessions. and look forward to his wife Janie joining him soon, Ernie and Janie will be working in the area of building at the student center in Echague and Lal-lo, and the offset printing ministry. Please pray that Janie

will be able to come soon (they must>sell their mobile home), and that
their adjustment to life here will be smooth.

Sharon's departure is close. Thanks to each of you who have given for her travel expenses and school costs. Although we've received generous gifts recently, these expenses are not quite covered, but we're
confident the Lord will provide. I can hardly prepare myself for the

empty place she will leave behind. But it's a comfort to know Sharon will be staying with Berta and Rob and attending OBC next fall. We ask your prayers for the things we've mentioned, Thank you
for your support of us, ours in Christ,

Dear folks,

I address my parents as '-dear folks'* and since you are all a part of our family,

I'll use It with you. How are you since we last wrote? Our tempo has slowed down considerably, with camps all finished, convention over with, and only school to plan for.
Our last few weeks in Manila with Sharon seem like a dream now. Everything we did together had a 'Hast time" flavor--shopping, visiting friends, preparing her to leave. 'Je'll see Sharon next year when we come on furlough (the Lord willing), but it's not likely that she'll return to the Philippines soon. Having arrived in the Philippines at the tender age of 19 months, Sharon looks on this country as her home. In her yearbooks she was voted as "one who relates well to Filipinos," and I consider that a tribute to her. In mall that came just today, Berta reported Sharon's safe
arrival and acquisition of a Job! Praise the Lord! The Lord has blessed Scott and the evangelistic team with 91 baptisms through

May 2^. He's lost weight, but maintains good health. He says they eat a lot of "grass and flowers" Filipinos cook banana blossoms and squash blossoms (flowers)

with sweet potato tops and kangkong (grass) greens.

To the team members who have

spent a full day calling in the mornings and playing basketball in the afternoons, such food lacks the substance they want. But they all look healthy enough, lean and trim. The team will be in Isabela for another two weeks. After that Scott plans to travel with Dennis McKlnney, holding evangelistic meetings, before he returns to the
U.S. In July.

Our Seminary and other Filipino schools will start June 22, later than usual because of the presidential election June 16. Marj Is working to finalize the class

schedule and prepare for registration.

Student files must be brought up to date, etc.

Carolyn will begin her 2nd grade course in June, also, l/e expect Harvey and Helen Beard In AparrI the second week in June, bringing Carolyn's workbooks with them. We're getting the textbooks for the course from a family in Tuguegaraoa big savings. Carolyn reads to herself and Is always asking the meaning of words. This week she is attending DV3S at the Aparri church. Susie, who works in our home, came back from her two weeks of teaching with great enthusiasm. They had 50 children in one place, and 6^ In the other. Multiply that by the fifteen or so teams we have out teaching all summerIt's exciting to think of
that many children being reached for Jesus.

Thank you for your part in reaching children, men, and women for Jesus here in the Philippines. V/orking through our Seminary to train Filipinos to reach their own people, in the local church and our home to live the way of Christ, In the printing work to feed hungry souls, through the Christian high schools to teach God's Viord -In every phase of our work YOU are behind us with your prayers and gifts. Praise the Lord for what He is doing through you and us. May He multiply your efforts for Him In your home and local congregation. Yours In Christ,

As the weeks went by we saw the Lord work in our lives to unite,us as a team. Time
after time when trials camesuch as the jeep getting stuck, or the radiator hose break ing; or when differences of opinion arose; or when Ill-feelings came up between us, the Lord taught us to stop right then to pray that He would fill us with HFs spirit of love
and understanding.

The Lord worked even in cases where we thought the situation was Impossible.

In the

town of Sto. Tomas where 99^ of the people speak Ibanag (our team .was 99^ Ilocano),
the Lord broyght about victory in spite of the language difference. We were all quite

discouraged the first day because we found we couldn't communicate with anyone except a few of the elderly people. Before v/e went to bed I called all the guys over and we prayed that God would lead us to people we could really communicate with. After pray ing, we all felt relaxed and renewed with zeal, re^dy for the coming day, and excited about the opportunities ahead. Fortunately our team leader, Federico Bueno, knew some Ibanag; the rest of us found that a combination of Ibanag, English, Tagalog, and Ilocano worked In our personal calling. Perhaps the greatest victory was the seed p>1anted through our testimonies between the 1st 6 2nd half of our i?asketball games each after noon to crowds averaging 400-500 people. When the week came to a close, we were able to look back and rejoice over the 5 who accepted Christand look ahead to next year when we'M begin to harvest from the seed planted. Federico is looking for an Ibanag
Bible so he can preach fluently in Ibanag then. So although I came home a little gaunt (15 lbs. lighter) I can say with joy that "Through It all I learned j:o trust in Jesus; I learned to trust in God"; and that truly He did great things In the lives of eight young men committed to serving Him. For it was certainly the Lord who caused 136 people to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior through our preaching and teaching this summer. PRAISE YE THE LORDS

Hello!

Let me tell you about an afternoon that really shook me up. Actually, it was just a simple DVBS program. I walked down the street a couple blocks, turned left, walked a couple more blocks, and there in an elementary classroom I watched the DVBS program prepared by two girls wlyj had just finished their first year at the Aparri Bible Seminary. "I just keep trusting my Lord," two junior-age girls sang earnestly. Tears came to my
eyes, and I wanted to stand up and shout what came to me so forcefully:
ARE HERE FOR!

THIS IS WHAT WE

THIS IS WORTH EVERYTHING WE EVER SACRIFICE AND ALL THE EFFORT WE EVER PUT

OUT!Just to see God's Word at work in the lives of these children,

"He's a faithful

friend," the girls sang on. And I thought again: oh, girls, I hope you are really trusting in Him as a faithful friend. Without these two Seminary girls to work in Punta, inhabited mostly by poor fisherman and over-run by children, these two girls and the other children would never have known how Jesus can change their lives.
The program wasn't the end of the matter either. Even now on the weekends the Punta children walk down to the girls' house and call for themj Janet and Luz come out and sing and tell them Bible stories and then walk home with them, showing such love that the children are learning about Jesus in more than one way.

The whole summer has brought exciting victories for the Lord. Three separate evangelistic teams of 3rd $ kth year ABS students were preaching, In addition to the

B-man team Scott worked with.

136 accepted Christ and were baptized by Scott's team;

the other student evangelists report 17 converted to Christ. The girls who went out for DVBS reported 955 children taught in 30 different Daily Vacation Bible Schools.

What makes It even more exciting Is the mood of the returning students. As registrar In the past I have had students ask for as few classes as were absolutely necessary to

graduate.

The young men and girls coming back in 1981 are begging for 20 and 2k hour

loads so they can learn all they can. One young man said, "I am so eager to study because I want to teach the people out there." Another put It this way: "I was assigned subjects to preach on this summer and I had to research very hard in my Bible; I want to know the

Words of God better."

The same Luz mentioned above (a working "Student) wants to take;

Old Testament History II, Acts, Galatians-Ephesians, English II, Greek II, Christian

Education II, and Choir.

(Sorry, Luz, English II will have to wait for next year!)

You can believe such attitudes make us eager to teach such enthusiastic learners! I have had no response to our request for a Choir director, so you must pray hard that I'll have strength necessary to lead Choir and teach three morning classes, plus a quartet. It doesn't seem possible that I can do that, but I'll have to believe along

with those girls: "I just keep trusting my Lord." Enrollment Is not yet complete, but 71 have registered so far, for the 1981-82 school year.

Another matter for trusting is the departure of Scott back to the U.S. this month. His being here has lifted our hearts, particularly as others tell of the way heonlnlsters and teaches. Federico Bueno, our ABS faculty member on Scott's team, told us that Scott was a real blessing to the team. In addition to his teaching, preaching, playing basket ball, giving testimonies at half-time, Scott worked at unifying the team. When feelings were hurt, Scott asked the fellows to pray together. When discouragement hit, Scott gathered them for prayer. One of the young men told me he really learned to depend on God because he saw Scott turn to Him for solutions, and He answered so wonderfully. We pray God will continue to bless Scott and make it possible for him to enter Bible college as he wants to do. Since he spent all his savings on plane fare, he has no reserve, but

God does.

Praise His Name!

We're glad we can trust our other children to the Lord, too. Rob and Berta recently celebrated their third wedding anniversary by buying a house and moving In. Jamie looks forward to re-entering OBC this fall, as does Sharon, who is gaining valuable experience in her work preparing for school. Carolyn started second grade under Mrs. Beard and Is

reading quite advanced materiale

(Praise the Lord for Mrs. Beard, I say over and over!)
Thank you for making our work

Dear friends,

with lots of hard work, there comes the excitement of teaching God's Word and seeing the light dawn in our students' minds. As we open our home to visiting missionaries, we have the joy of meeting new friends; this past month a Canadian cuple originaUy from the Netherlands, a German girl, and three Americans were in our home several nights (nt all at the same time!).
