The Delights of Coudenberg

Paulo Martins Oliveira
____________________________________________________________________

In the Garden of Earthly Delights, Jheronimus Bosch actually addressed different issues, which were carefully encoded and accurately superimposed by means of compromise solutions. Thus, among other issues, the artist satirized the degenerate courtiers in the luxurious gardens of the Palace of Coudenberg (Brussels), that is to say the local Flemish-Dutch elites being defiled in the headquarters of the Habsburg domination. Despite its renovations the site survived as a garden (currently the Parc de Bruxelles/Warandepark). The historical and artistic context is presented elsewhere 1; the following comparative examples illustrate the Palace of Coudenberg and its joyful surroundings, i.e. the elusive Garden of Earthly Delights.
