March 2003 – The Baltimore Sun Baltimore, MD

Present Education reporter. Cover the 82,000-student Baltimore school district, routinely writing about state and
national trends in K-12 education as well as test scores, special education and school violence. Write
daily for the InsideEd blog, drawing an average 10,000 page views per week. Spent 18 months following
the Baltimore superintendent for a three-part series published in February 2009. Earlier stories exposed
inaccuracies in the school system’s budget and school repairs that were paid for but not done. Wrote a
five-part series during the 2005-06 academic year about teachers from the Philippines. From 2003 to
2005, covered Baltimore County schools and reported on issues involving care for the developmentally
disabled. August 2004 article on the death of a profoundly retarded woman led to the closure of a group
home provider and a Medicaid fraud investigation. August 2003 article on a problem Baltimore nightclub
led to liquor board sanctions.

June 2000 – San Jose Mercury News Palo Alto/San Jose, CA

March 2003 Education reporter. Covered 22 school districts on the San Francisco Peninsula, writing a weekly column
on school news and contributing to statewide education stories. Reporting on corruption and substandard
education in East Palo Alto’s Ravenswood City School District prompted community mobilization and
the ouster of a school board majority in the November 2002 election. June 2001 project about
Ravenswood’s problems led to a county investigation of district finances and won the Mercury News
Managing Editor’s Award for the best journalism of the quarter. Also uncovered cheating on standardized
tests and the submission of fraudulent documents by Ravenswood officials to a federal court, leading to
sanctions and ethics training.

Fall 1996 – The Daily Northwestern Evanston, IL

Winter 2000 Managing editor, 1999 to 2000. Supervised a 100-person staff, selecting desk and section editors, leading
budget meetings, and editing copy. Promoted from city editor, assistant city editor, beat reporter. Covered
Evanston police and fire departments and city council.

Summer 1999 The Boston Globe Boston, MA

Metro desk intern. Covered general assignment news, feature and enterprise stories in Boston and
throughout New England. Contributed to several breaking news stories, including the death of JFK Jr.

Fall 1998 Newsday Queens/Long Island, NY

Reporting intern in Queens bureau. Wrote stories daily throughout New York City as part of university
internship. Spent three weeks on the copy desk.
Summer 1998 The Virginian-Pilot Norfolk, VA

Military-team intern. One of five reporters to cover world’s largest military base.
