New year brings online, innovation opportunities
Dear Stoughton Area students, parents and community, On Sept. 3, more than 3200 students, age prekindergarten through 12th grade, will walk through the front doors of their schools to begin the school year. In doing so, they will be taking advantage of a multitude of wonderful educational opportunities provided by the taxpayers in our district. The start of each school year is exciting because of the energy our students, staff, parents and community members bring to it - and all the possibilities that working together provide. Our school district excels because our parents, teachers, staff and community do a remarkable job of supporting our students and setting high expectations. A lot of activity has been taking place over the summer to ensure that we have a safe learning environment, and that our facilities are well maintained. At various schools we have put in new ceiling tiles, new heating and ventilation systems, and new carpeting. The custodial and maintenance staff has done an excellent job of preparing our facilities for the start of the new school year. In addition, I am pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of the Stoughton Community, our students will have access to a Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) at Stoughton High School. The Stoughton High School Fab Lab is an innovative environment that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art and math. The Fab Lab utilizes equipment like laser cutters, 3D printers, milling machines, CNC routers, and vinyl cutters to provide our students and community an opportunity to create just about anything! The concept of the Fab Lab was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is shared with learning organizations all over the world. We are proud and excited that the Stoughton Area School District has one of the few high schools in the United States with a functioning Fab Lab. This initiative, along with all the opportunities that our students have, helps strengthen our commitment to provide an innovative and excellent education so that

all students are career and college ready. I encourage parents to attend the Open House scheduled at your childs school. Preparing for a new school year can be a little unnerving for parents and students. We encourage parents to ease the transition from summer break to school by attending open house and meeting with your childs teacher to learn what he/she has planned for this year.
As the year progresses I look forward to seeing and meeting you in the community, at various community events, and at school functions. I look forward to working with you to make this an exciting and rewarding year for all. All the best as we begin a new school year! Dr. Tim Onsager District Administrator

The Stoughton High School sports program had one of its better seasons in sports for 2012-13 in school history with several state appearances and a few firsts in school history. Boys basketball continued its winning ways this season, not only making its third straight sectional final but also making state for the first time in 74 years. The girls track and field team also added a sectional title, its first in school history, and the boys golf team made state for the first time. The baseball teams state appearance and a heavyweight wrestling state title by Jessie Nelson also highlighted the year.

Continued from page 1 installing a new gym floor at Fox Prairie Elementary School. The summer before that was marked by work on the heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, repaving parking lots and remodeling restrooms at Kegonsa Elementary School and the high school. Along the way, the district has also been able to do some projects that it had not been expecting to do, notably the new weight room and remodeled entrance at the high school. Part of the reason for that was the construction market, but part of it is also that the district acted as its own construction manager, selecting and working with the subcontractors itself as opposed to hiring a general contractor to do that work.

TAG programming has its foundations within classrooms. The basis of effective education in Stoughton schools is rigorous classroom instruction, a positive learning environment, and school-wide support. All students are expected to receive instruction that meets state standards and district benchmarks (goals). Classroom teachers recognize that each child learns at a different depth and pace, which may require curricular adaptations. Differentiation of instruction is a tool used by teachers to meet varying student needs. In most cases, differentiation strategies are integrated throughout the curricular areas rather than occurring as special events. Our Talented and Gifted model is grounded in the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instructions (DPI) Comprehensive and Integrated Model for Gifted Education, also referred to as the Pyramid Model. This model grew out of Wisconsins Standard (t) legislation which outlines compliances for K-12 gifted education that all public school districts must meet. For more information see the Stoughton Area Schools District TAG Brochure.
