SYSTEM STUDY Existing System The existing library management system is automated for monitori ng and controlling the

transactions in a library. It mainly focuses on the bas ic operations like adding a new member or book, updating new information, search ing of books or members and the facility to borrow, return or reserve books. The library staffs are the users of the system. Drawbacks of the existing system ? For renewing a book the students/staffs have to contact the librarian in person with the book he/she needs to renew. This is inconvenient to the student s/staffs. ? Users do not have provision to know their fine details until they conta ct the librarian. ? The members need to contact the librarian each time to know the status o f the books they have reserved. ? The students/staffs need to remind about their book s return date. So ther e is a great chance of getting fined in case of a delay in returning the book at correct time.

Proposed system The proposed system is an enhancement to the existing system that allows the stu dents/staffs to use the existing system more conveniently. It is a mobile applic ation that provides the members with an option to renew and reserve a book throu gh their smart phones. Using the proposed application the students/staffs can lo gin to their library accounts with a valid username and password and access the details regarding the books they hold. Advantages of the proposed system ? The proposed system allows the staffs/students to access certain feature s of the existing library management software. ? Since it is a mobile based application most of the library services are accessible by the user on the go. ? The members can view their book holds through the proposed application. ? The members also have a search option to find the book of their taste an d to know whether the book is currently available in the library. ? For book renewal students/staffs need not to go to the library in person . It can be performed easily with a single button click. ? The proposed application allows the members to reserve a book or cancel a book reserve request they had already made through their mobile phones. Thus m aking this service available even during holidays. ? The members will get notified if the reserved book is available in the l ibrary so that they need not visit the library each time to know about the book status. ? Since the book holds details are accessible at anytime, the students/sta ffs need not to remind about their book s return date and the chances of getting f ined can be avoided to a great extend.
