resorter notes
This weekend, Delavan
will be celebrating its long
and unique history with a
4-day extravaganza includ-
ing music, dance, fun and
food. The event will begin at
7:00 PM on Thursday, July
25 with a concert by local
R&B favorite, Cedric Square
singing Gospel at the Phoe-
nix Park Bandshell. Cedric
is mostly known as the lead
singer for Kings Highway,
which recently wowed the
crowds at Delavans 4th of
July celebration, again.
Heritage Fest will con-
tinue all day Friday, and
Saturday with music and
dance at the bandshell,
plus food and fun activities
throughout the park, along
2nd Street and downtown.
Fridays stage performances
will begin at noon with Jeff
Bianchi, a classical guitar-
ist coming all the way from
Georgia to play Renaissance
& Baroque Lute works,
popular Catalan and Cuban
Folk melodies. At 1:00, The
Brothers Quinn, a 4-piece lo-
cal, acoustic folk group, will
play an eclectic collection of
celtic, bluegrass and rock.
Michael Suess will bring
back his wide collection of
drums for a hands-on, audi-
ence participation, Drum-
ming For Peace event at
2:30.
Dangerous Folk will
take the stage at 3:30 with
their Blowing in the Wind
tour of familiar classic folk
songs from the 60s.
At 5:00 the Wisconsin
Dells Singers and Dance
Troupe will perform a tra-
ditional, colorful, Native
American drum & dance
ceremony, followed at 7:00
by modern, Native American
blues singer, Jamie Brace.
Jamie has performed for the
last few years on the Dela-
van stage to rave reviews,
and its always a joy to have
her return.
Special Childrens
Events on Friday from 12:00
PM to 4:00 will include Ad-
ventures with Ma & Pa, a
super cool museum right on
the front lawn of Aram Li-
brary. At 1:30, participants
will actually work together
to construct a 5 x 6 log
cabin!
Later, from 6:30 PM-
8:30 the library will host an
Art Reception, featuring the
great art of Delavans art
colonists Adolph and Ada
Schulz.
View the librarys his-
toric paintings while enjoy-
ing refreshments from Brick
Street Market.
Activities on stage will
begin again Saturday morn-
ing at 11:00 AM with the
Dixie Doodlers, a top rated
1920 style Jazz Band, fol-
lowed at 12:30 by the big
hats, big horns, and big
guitars of Mariachi Latino.
The Squeezettes a very fun,
group of three accordion
squeezing ladies and two
backup rhythm guys doing
traditional Milwaukee Polka
mixed with comedy will be-
gin at 2:00.
Next, prepare for some
more bright colorful cos-
tumes and ying feathers
from 2 south-of-the-border
Native American dance
groups. Tierra Colombiana

bia, by way of Chicago at
3:30, and Ballet Folklorico
Nacional (5:00) will depict
Mexicos diverse culture
and folklore with an array
of dances from different re-
gions of their country.
After watching all this
great international danc-
ing, its time to kick back
and get on the oor your-
self. At around 6 p.m., Todd
Schnell, a life-long dancer
and occasional teacher, will
teach swing dancing just in
time for the Jack Farina Big
Band at 7.
While playing the Big
Band favorites, Jack will
discuss the important role
of Delavan in the ballroom
dancing era.
Saturday still has lots
more activities for the kids.

calendar of events
By Jessica Franzene
Six years ago, Chad Carper enjoyed a meal at a lakefront restaurant and
while dining, remarked to his mom, Wouldnt it be great to have a restaurant
at a location like this?
Today, hes enjoying running his new restaurant Nuvo, creating seasonal
menu items and specials, welcoming locals and visitors and collaborating with
his staff to bring a new feel, look and taste to that same lakefront location he
admired years ago.
And new is indeed a key word for what Chad is bringing to the former
Kirschs at the French Country Inn. There are several ways to spell nou-
veau, he said, but I chose Nuvo because in Creole, vo means again. So its
new combined with again.
In this spirit, Chads menu brings classic techniques and ingredients to-
gether with the unexpected elements of southern and southwestern cuisine.
And its all brought to the next level by the entire kitchen staffs attention to
detail and insistence on fresh ingredients.
We dont hold sauces, for example, Chad said. We prepare everything
fresh to order. He brought his sous chef from his former restaurant (Georgie
Bs in Fontana). Hes meticulous and productive, and those are two great
qualities to have in a sous chef.
Besides the energy and synergy in the kitchen, Nuvo has a lot more to rec-
ommend it. Patrons of the former Kirschs at the French Country Inn know the
location offers unbeatable views of the lake from inside and out. A multi-level
lakeside deck is the site for live entertainment Fridays through Sundays, of-
fering guests the option of dining in the great outdoors. A comfortable bar also
overlooks the lake, with a staff led by Mitch Gibson, who is quickly becoming
renowned for his signature Hurricanes.
Nuvo also features a private room for events, and the restaurant is taking
reservations for both private celebrations and dining. We especially recom-
mend calling for reservations if you want to dine outdoors, Chad said.
To make the most of the season and enjoy fresh, unique cuisine along with
live entertainment and classic libations, call (262) 245-5105. Nuvos is located
at W4190 West End Road, adjacent to the French Country Inn.
Nuvo menu highlights
Blackened crab cakes: dusted with Cajun seasoning and served with roasted vegetables and a
Cajun remoulade.
Fried calamari: lightly fried and served with lemon and peperocini.
Filet Oscar: served on a blackened crab cake with roasted asparagus and a chipotle hollanda-
ise.
Steak au poivre: tournedos of beef topped with cognac peppercorn sauce.
Fresh seafood specials.
Real South Florida key lime pie.
Nuvo cheesecake (avors vary according to season)

oday, Lake Genevas
summer sounds
include car horns,
music blaring from open windows
and occasionally, the squeal of
tires as someone tries to beat a
yellow light.
But if you listen beyond that,
youll hear some of the same noises
that lled the air in the summer of
1871. A steam yacht whistle. The
clip-clop of horses hooves on a
journey through town.
Youll have to imagine the train
whistle, though.
In 1856, the Wisconsin Cen-
tral Railroad built a line from Rich-
mond to Lake Geneva.
But Lake Geneva was not a
summer destination yet, and the
railroad, in spite of bringing pas-
senger service down to Elgin, Ill.,
didnt have an impact on Lake
Genevas economy. Rail service
to Lake Geneva languished until
1871, when the Chicago and
Northwestern system resurrected
the Richmond line.
It was just in time for the
crowds. Two events transpired
to lend the passenger line his-
torical importance: the develop-
ment of the Geneva Lake shore-
line, with mansions like Shelton
Sturges Maple Lawn; and the
Chicago Fire. Suddenly, summer
homes became a refuge for Chi-
cago families whod lost their pri-
mary residences and the train
was vital to keeping the families
together. Mothers, household help
and children would take the train
up to stay during the week, and
fathers would join them on the
weekends.
Even after Chicago had recov-
ered from the re, the pattern
continued. By 1885, the Lake
Geneva Herald was issuing casual
reports on the state of summer
transportation in the city. Most of
the lakeshore mansions were only
accessible by the water, so fami-
lies took hacks, or carriages to the
shoreline, where they boarded pri-
vate or public steam yachts.
The C&NW Railroad wanted
to cash in on the trip all the way to
the waters edge, though. In May
of 1885, the Herald published the
city charter, which drew a line in
the sand when it came to the rail-
road companys desire:
Unless we are willing, the
railroad companies cannot occupy
... that most beautiful and desir-
able portion of our territory the
lakefront, with their unsightly
buildings, ther long strings of cars,
their noise, their all-pervading
smoke and dust. Railroad compa-
nies are great powers for good if
they choose ... but they are much
greater powers for evil when they
override the rights of individuals.
(One) shall say to them, You can
have so much, and no more.
The controversy surrounding
a lakefront railway depot drew
this editorial comment in June
of the same year: Our hackmen
evidently do not believe that the
railroad lakeshore spur will do
their business much harm, or why
would they indulge so extensively
in elegant rigs. Last week we
noiced that Sherman had a ne

the facility is a historic Main Street, which includes a log cabin, a blacksmiths, a general store, dentist, residences,
a school and more. A hands-on approach makes history come alive for all ages. Exhibits also highlight yachting and
sailing on Geneva Lake, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway and some of the lakeshore estates.
Shorepath Walk Public access to the Geneva Lake Shorepath, which circles the entire lake and is a public right-
of-way, is located at the west end of Library Park, West Main Street, and at the eastern end of Baker Park off Wrigley

The public carriages-for-hire,
along with estate owners private
hacks, met millionaires and day-
trippers alike at the depot, which
was located on the 500 block of
Broad Street.
The location wasnt ideal for
an end-of-the-line: not enough
real estate for a turntable. Local
railroad historian Ed Yaeger has
unearthed literally, at times
information and evidence about
the turntables remote location off
Sage Street.
But for visitors and summer
residents, taking a hack or head-
ing downtown on foot got them to
the next leg of their journey: the
lakefront.
Steam yachts, both public and
private, lined the shore on summer
days. They took visitors on tours,
just as their replicas and restored
originals do today. They blew their
whistles as they departed, just as
they do today.

order has gone out all along the line for the steam-
ers to whistle no more than is absolutely necessary.
There is very little need of whistling at all, and it
is terribly annoying to those living along the shore,
as it wakes everybody up too early in the morning
and is forever breaking the babies out of their naps.
The pilots of the private boats are just as bad if not
worse than those on the public steams, about tooting
whistles.
So who owned those private boats who were
the millionaires who took the express? The Herald
re-ran a story from the Chicago Evening Post called
A Load of Big Men: the 3:15 oclock Lake Geneva
Train Carries it Every Day in the Week.
Quite a gang, the story quotes a Northwest-
ern commoner about the group of regulars on the
train.
There was some money represented in the little
group. There were George Sturges, president of the
Northwestern Bank ... and R.T. Crane ... They all
have beautiful villas on the lake.
On Saturdays it is loaded down and running
over with women with elegant gures and pretty
faces, and with men whose names are good at all
the banks. The story details the various big mens
business holdings and homes, and then ends on a
literal note: Nobody ever started for Lake Geneva
who did not see a man itting about the train puff-
ing and blowing, his fat sides shaking with move-

ment. This is Colonel Lippincott, manager of a hotel
at Fox Lake and the fattest man probably outside of
a museum ... nobody ever sat in the same seat as the
colonel and nobody ever will.
The colonel, however, gets through the ordinary
car door without difculty.
Big men and other passengers continued riding
the line to Lake Geneva, which never did extend to
the shoreline. (C&NW did put a depot on the Wil-
liams Bay lakefront, though.) When cars became the
new normal, the hacks and train became an alter-
nate source of transportation. The train line held its
own until 1975, by which time service had become
so slow and the passenger count so small that the
railroad eventually cut its losses. The depot and turn-
table were no longer needed, and even the bridge
that crossed over Main Street disappeared.
Today, steam yachts still whistle (though appar-
ently not with the reckless abandon of the 1800s),
and youll still see horsedrawn carriages taking visi-
tors downtown. But you have to know where to look
to see evidence of the Millionaire Express.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE July 25, 2013
The Delavan and Delavan Lake area is one of the most popular resort locations in
Wisconsin with exciting water sports, golf, horseback riding, and winter activities.
The citys park system contains more than 100 acres of natural preserves, parks, picnic
areas, and playgrounds. Included in Delavans beautiful park system can be found a
swimming pond, ice-skating and hockey rinks, sledding hills and a Memorial Arboretum.
Over two miles of winding waterways are within the city; Lake Comus is a favorite spot for
children. Along the north shore of Lake Comus, beyond the arboretum, is the Dibble Nature
Trail where many varieties of trees, shrubs, marsh grass, birds and small animal wildlife
can be observed in their natural habitat.
The new Rotary Gardens on the east end of the city highlights a seven-rock fountain
representing the seven continents.
The city owns and operates the 27-hole Delbrook Golf Course rated as one of the finest
public courses in the area. It includes a man-made lake, a modern irrigation system, and
modern clubhouse. A golf pro is available to help with all your golfing needs.
