Sierra Providence El Paso Hospitals Ranked Top in Texas Patient Engagement Index

Halina, 21, is another lady that attends Roca. She is also self-taught and is proud to do weight workouts that were previously thought to be male oriented. Ive improved because Ive actually gained weight, going from about 100 lbs to 120 lbs. Though she is a bit more toned than a typical lady her age, she works out for strength and definition, boasting a 135 lb bench press and 185 lb deadlift. She states that she has had problems with others understanding her enthusiasm for fitness. Guys can be more understanding of a girl being fit, though it has taken away some potential dates. Girls sometimes think Im too strong and I dont fit the feminine stereotype. She says that, in the end, ladies have to love who they are, but also take care of themselves. An option that is geared more towards women is the Zumba studios that deliver a cardio workout based on dance. Vanessa Marquez owns Dance Life Studios, and has also lost weight using Zumba methods. Women in El Paso are beginning to feel empowered to better themselves.
Zumba incorporates dance which many women may already be accustomed to. When you have fun with your workout, your self-confidence is boosted and the improvements will come. Continues on next page
Continued from page 3 Vanessa, like the other trainers interviewed, espouses the need for a lifestyle change, rather than a quick fix, like crash diets. Sofia is one of Vanessas clients and an exam-
ple of that lifestyle change that incorporated Zumba. Sofia has lost 80 pounds over the last year, though she says she wasnt good at sports or even dancing. She says even though she was forced to go her first time to Zumba, she is now an instructor. Theres been more
awareness about diabetes and heart disease, so theres more of an incentive to begin exercising. Women, I think, gravitate towards dance, so its easier to come in and start right away. Vanessa and the other instructors are real good to emphasize an overall fitness plan,
but having fun makes it easier to do stick to the plan. Jason Brison, a trainer at PUSH Fitness, looks over his clients and, with a smile, gently corrects and encourages them. Jason trains his clients in Crossfit, a high intensity workout that combines calisthenics with weight training. He has seen the recent upsurge in fitness activities and believes that the key to success is education. El Paso is starting to see the value of a gym membership. We have dedicated clients who support one another. Jason has a UTEP degree in Kinesiology and believes that helps him with his clients. Properly educated trainers help prevent injury and debunk myths. One of those myths is that weight training for women will make them bulky, but the ladies who train at PUSH know thats just a misconception. Yvette, 41, says that when she first came in, she couldnt do a single push up. Now, a set of 100 pushups can be incorporated into a single workout session. Clients like Jesse, 26, say that part of the reason she came to this gym was not necessarily to be athletic, but merely to learn and to feel accomplishment. Crossfit at any other time might have been a male dominated, but more women see it as an option. Suracy, 20,

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults receive a booster every ten years, and that they get a Tdap vaccination at least two weeks before coming into close contact with an infant. The concept is referred to as cocooning and is meant to ensure that a child who may not be old enough for immunization is surrounded by individuals who are protected. Pertussis is a respiratory illness that is very contagious and caused by a bacteria. It can cause violent and rapid coughing until the air is gone from the lungs and you are forced to inhale with a loud "whooping" sound. So far this year, the Department has received 40 confirmed cases of Pertussis. Thats compared to 55 cases in all of 2012 and 6 cases in all of 2011. We want to make sure everyone knows that vaccination is the number one way to prevent

Now, I can do pullups and many other things I couldnt do before. I think fitness in El Paso has evolved. People are tired of the heart disease, tired of being overweight, tired of being sick. People have seen the benefits of exercise. As a by-product of her training, Suracy is now also training as an amateur MMA fighter, another male dominated spot, something she says would have

For ladies who are starting out, I would at least invest in a trainer at the beginning. By Sharon Mosley If the summer heat wave makes you want to roll over in your bed every morning and wake up in October, \ you may need to swallow hard and take a chill pill. Or take a deep drink of one of these fashion coolers. Here are a few ways to beat the heat of summer in style:
building mousse before your hair is dry, according to the experts at John Frieda. Then spray with an all-day hold hairspray. And so what if it's all a little messy with a few strands of hair sticking out here and there? The look of these "deconstructed" chignons are loose and easy, perfect for a hot summer's day or night. Headscarves are another hot trend to keep tresses at bay in hot weather.
jeans in your closet during the hot summer months can give you a heatstroke. Instead, opt for a pair of printed denim shorts or Bermudas. Even cropped pants can be a lifesaver that won't drag you down like those full-length boot cuts you wore last winter. Stick to lighter washes of denim. Now is the perfect time to try a pair of distressed jeans slashed with instant built-in air-conditioning. Check out the selection of denim shorts at Old Navy.

WALLACE: As you know, backpacks are a normal accessory for both grade and high school students. I'm going to buy two backpacks, one for my 10-year-old son and one for my 12-year-old daughter. I want the best in making sure the backpacks are helpful for my children and will not cause any harm. Any information on backpacks will be appreciated. Mother, Brookhaven, Miss. MOTHER: Many (more than 5,000) hospital-treated injuries are yearly occurrences associated with backpacks, and the most vulnerable age group is 9to 16-year-olds. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a loaded backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of a child's total weight, though their experts recommend staying closer to 10 percent. The pack should be worn about 2 inches above the waist and with both shoulder straps close to the body. Straps should be shortened (and the excess length fastened securely out of the way) so that they can't get stepped on or caught in doors. Reflective trim added to the back and sides of the pack adds visibility in the fall and winter months, when students might travel to and from school in near-darkness. I was paddling my kayak the other day, creeping up on my local loon family, trying to be invisible as I watched Mom and Dad (Claire d' and Lorna) teach their chicks how to dive. I let the daydream take me. I imagine myself in the sustainable bathroom of my new Delos condo in lower Manhattan, about to take a shower infused with vitamin C and aloe. (The C neutralizes the chlorine. The non-toxic aloe nourishes the skin.) I am barefoot, as always, walking on a heated path of stones that stimulate all my favorite reflexology points. Best of all, given my current state of paranoia about cellphone radiation, I can feel an extra layer of protection because, according to the Delosliving.com site, "Electromagnetic field panels block electrical currents that could be bothersome." For now, the WELL building condos are pie in the sky, way out of reach of ordinary folks who feel lucky to have a working kitchen, let alone one with anti-bacterial counters. That's OK. It's wildly expensive, but creating and building healthy houses, workspaces and schools is exactly the way to go. And Delos is already developing hotel rooms, offices and schools that follow their WELL certification standards. New ideas often take hold at the top first. Eventually, costs come way down. I secretly hope the 1 percent do migrate to houses, workplaces and schools that make them healthier and happier. Then they can be more compassionate, less
greedy and more generous with the rest of America. ENERGY EXPRESS-O! HOPE LIVES "People want health and healthy status more than anything in the world. Now I'm in my Delos-designed kitchen with the built-in juice bar and herb garden, admiring my well stocked 78-bottle wine cooler. I am standing on cork-rubberoak composite floors that keep my legs happy and promote good posture. I have access to "advanced nutrient tracking software," which I am certain I will never use. I am breathing the cleanest air possible and drinking the purest water. I am surrounded by beautiful green plants that give off extra shots of oxygen all day long. Dear Mrs. Mary Hunt: My name is Abby. I am 13 years old. So, my mom got your book, "Raising Financially Confident Kids." She is on Chapter 9, and she wants to do that give your kids money and make them buy their clothes, shoes, etc., each month. Well, I didn't really like the idea. I actually thought it was stupid. But I didn't say anything. So later on my mom went to bed, so I picked up the book and read it. Then I knew that it wasn't stupid. It was about teaching your kids how to handle money. I don't know how this will work. But I can at least try. My mom thinks you read her mind. Ha! Ha! Ha! I don't know if you have ever had a kid my age write to you, but you have inspired me and my family. Thank ya!
Abby, I'll bet you're a great swimmer. How did you learn to do that? Did your mom sit you in a chair and tell you all about water and how, when you swim, you have to hold your breath and kick your feet? Did she say that when you grow up you can go into a pool, but until then you just cannot be trusted in water?

You are an anorexia nervosa sufferer if the following criteria apply to you: 1. A tremendous fear of becoming obese that does not go away even if you are losing weight. 2. If you claim to "feel fat" even when skinny. 3. If you continue to lose weight even when reaching the minimal weight for your height and age. 4. If you are losing weight and suffer from no known physical illness. If you can identify with any of these situations, you should seek professional help. It's very difficult to eliminate anorexia nervosa without the guidance and help of a professional therapist. Dr. Robert Wallace welcomes questions from readers. GET A MOVE ON
By Gina Spadafori Universal Uclick The joke in dog training these days is that when you get two trainers together, the only thing theyll agree on is that a third trainer is doing it wrong. But theres something else that the fiercest advocate of a no-punishment training approach will find in common with the trainer who believes that a dogs actions need consequences: Theyll both agree that your dog is likely not getting enough exercise, and that sedentary lives are at the root of a lot of canine behavior problems. Look at the big, active dogs we adore, such as the Labrador retriever and the German shepherd. You dont have to go far down the popularity list to find other active breeds, such as the always-in-motion dog commonly known as the Jack Russell terrier. Factor in the countless retriever, shepherd, husky, hound and terrier mixes, and you have a lot of dogs whose genetics have prepared them to work nonstop for hours at a time. Instead, many of them spend their lives in small, boring backyards. To burn off all that natural energy, theyre

For men, too, concurred Kim Palmeter of Pantone, who added that the pink-tocome will not be your cliche baby shade. Think of a pink that's "less sugary and more faded," she explained. It's also fashionable to be tickled pink, according to Cassandra Tsaknis of Stylesight. Among the future trends she cited is "Rapture," because "life is better when you are laughing." There's even an app for it, she said. It's called the "Serendipiter." Rose Bennett Gilbert is the co-author of "Manhattan Style" and six other books on interior design.

Q: Our heirloom couch is long and low. It dates back to the l960s, when people must have liked their seating closer to the floor. Anyway, the couch used to look fine in our old house where we had it under a big window. In our new house, there's no window wall, and it doesn't work. It just looks lost against the bare wall. What to do? A: You've got to accentuate the negative. Put something important on that bare wall so it forms a unit with your low couch. Give it stature, if you will. A couple of easy suggestions: Stand a tall, attractive screen behind the couch (you can make one yourself from wood shelving boards hinged together and then wallpapered). Closing ranks above a tufted sofa, a dozen framed woodcuts turn a wall into the focal point of this red-white-and-blue sitting room. Photo: Courtesy Continues on next page Pearson Furniture
Q: How come you never talk about redecorating a bath? We have one so tiny my husband can touch both sidewalls with his elbows! We're thinking of remodeling, keeping the same floor space (5 x 7 feet) and changing fixtures and maybe the tile, which goes a half-wall up over the tub. We need inspiration and information. A: A dose of experience wouldn't hurt either. Who would have rehabbed more tiny baths than a designer working in New York City, where every square inch of space is precious? So I've picked the talented brain of designer John Buscarello (buscarello.com), who specializes in making more of less.
The bath we show here is as space-deprived as yours, a weenie 5 x 7-ft. But John has waved his magic shoehorn and made it feel both larger and quite elegant in the process. Among of his professional suggestions: Get rid of your tired old tub. Ditto whatever "dreary" shower curtain goes with it. That space is better spent on an updated standing shower behind a stationary glass panel (a 30-inch opening lets you not splashes out on one side). Think tile allover. Tiling right up to and often, over the ceiling, European-style, will put your old-fashioned bath in a sleek, contemporary mood. Here, John has used subway (rectangular) tile but stacked, instead of staggering, it "to create a more modern feel." Work magic with mirrors. Not only are mirrors de rigueur in any bath, they double the space you see. John also doubled their usefulness, installing a pair of matching mirrored wall cabinets over the pedestal sink. Aggrandize the floor. Never mind that it's A once-ordinary small bath makes quite a splash with aqua tile, glass shower wall and a doublehelping of mirrored cabinets. Photo Courtesy of John A. Buscarello, Inc. Interior Design. small. Laying oversized tile John used 12 x 24-inch porcelain tile will make the space look much larger. Other tips from the pro: "Don't be afraid of color in the bath," John counsels. The owner of this apartment was looking for tranquility in her new bath, he reports. Hence his choice of cool, calming aqua tile. Another colorful idea: Create a feature wall with tile. Or opt for a paint color that speaks to you. "Just be sure to choose a paint that has a sheen finish" for both practical and esthetic reasons, he advises. COPYRIGHT 2013 CREATORS.COM

DJ Spotlight | Classixx
Music Releases
Music comes naturally to L.A. duo Classixx, childhood friends who began recording together in 2007, united by their mutual appreciation for shimmering melody, punk rock, disco and French house. When Classixx DJ, they do so with exceptional comprehension, a clear affinity for the music they play. Theres a kinship between the songs they select and their own original works, at once beaming, breezy and wistful, descendent from similarly pop-minded melancholics like Fleetwood Mac, Prince, and Alan Braxe. Now one of the worlds most universally respected DJ duos, Classixx have headlined everywhere from the famed Paris Social Club to New Yorks Webster Hall, touring constantly since releasing their exuberant 2009 single Ill Get You, which featured Lady Gaga songwriter Jeppe. Following their breakout single with acclaimed remixes for Phoenix, Holy Ghost, Mayer Hawthorne, Groove Armada, Yacht, Major Lazer, Gossip and others, for the last two years Classixx have been intent on their debut Hanging Gardens, whittling the LP down from hundreds of sessions to a svelte 12 songs. Their musical background is substantial. Michael David fronted a major label-signed rock band in high school, and he and one-time Berklee School of Music student Tyler Blake play a wide array of instruments on Hanging Gardens. It's a very gear-heavy record. We pretty much played everything in here on it, Tyler says, surveying their Venice beach studio, a cottage which houses six or seven guitars, a piano, various analog synths and a drum kit. One of their favorites is an indigenous Central American drum with a fuzzy hot pink mallet, which was used frequently throughout the album. "We used a lot of Prophet 08, Voyager, Juno-106, a lot of [Yamaha] DX-7, the Vermona drum synth, we have a LinnDrum, a [Yamaha] CP70, which is a famous stage piano, Mike adds. Tyler's dad has an old American Fender Telecaster that was played a lot, and then my old man, that's his Ibanez Stratocaster. The album begins with nostalgic title track Hanging Gardens, a reference to the Seven Wonders of the World, one of which was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The opening songs reverie continues on haunting collaborations with Active Child on Long Lost, Superhumanoids singer Sarah Chernoff on the ethereal A Stranger Love, and the coastal, dreamy A Fax From the Beach. Hanging Gardens concludes poetically with Valley Vacation, a reference to their latenight escape from their old studio, nestled in the seedy heart of L.A.s porn industry, to their current Venice beach sanctuary. If the quieter moments of the album are inspired by the beach, then the upbeat tracks are clearly primed for the dance floor, from churning slapper Relight My Fire and gleefully catchy Nancy Whang-featuring All Youre Waiting For, to the French Touch-inspired anthem Holding On sublime chords of Dominoes and grooving bass and live drums of Supernature. Classixx excel at cutting impossibly sunny grooves, blithe melodies bred by the coast, coaxed out by the surf, expertly crafted for road trips, pool parties and dance clubs. I really think this is a product of the Los Angeles experience, Mike says. Which is also part of the reason we called it Hanging Gardens. For some reason that image just reminds me of Los Angeles. I feel like most people would agree that it sounds like California, Tyler concurs. When we're working on a song and I look out the window it just seems like the soundtrack of this city. This beach.

Sprint Cup drivers look back at Brickyard 400 wins, history at historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway
In the beginning, many old-school open-wheel fans resented the presence of NASCAR racers at the Brickyard. Columbus, Ind., native Tony Stewart, who grew up following events at the Brickyard and initially raced in the Indy Racing League and was a series champion before moving to NASCAR, was among them. The first time they came, Ill be honest, I was 100 percent against it, Stewart said. When you grow up in the in 2005 and 2007, now has no problem with other circuits invading his home track. Now with Formula One coming in, Moto GP, the Grand-Am Series, Nationwide cars running here, I think the mindset has changed that its too historic of a speedway to run one race a year on it, he said. To be able to bring so many great different series and divisions here, its pretty neat that a lot of people get the honor to race here at Indy now. Stewart, who started from the pole in his first Indy 500 in 1996 and had a best finish of fifth the next year, makes no secret of his love for the Speedway or his desire to win there. This is an event that I definitely circle on the schedule, he said. Emotionally, I have a lot invested in it. To us, its definitely not just another stop on the schedule. You dont just pull in and say, Were going to go in and try to win the race, then pull out of here. When youre here, youre amped up because youre at Indianapolis. And for Stewart, kissing the bricks in the traditional Indy winners ceremony is about as good as it gets. It was everything to me, he said. My whole life, since I was a kid, thats what I wanted to do. Not that I had some fascination with kissing bricks as a child. But my fascination to do it here was pretty obsessive.
Tony Stewart kisses the bricks a second time at Indianapolis following his 2007 win.
This weekends Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard marks the 20th running of a race many thought would never happen. For years, the only race run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the world-renowned Indianapolis 500. NASCAR was considered by many Indy fans to be a lesser form of racing, not worthy of competing on the hallowed oval that had been the focus of motorsports since the turn of the 20th century. Legend has it that NASCARs founder, the late Bill France Sr., was denied credentials to the 500 in 1965 and had to buy a grandstand ticket to watch as one of his NASCAR teams, the Wood Brothers, led Jimmy Clark to victory in the race. But that all changed in 1994. The Sprint Cup Series ran the Brickyard 400 before crowds that rivaled the throngs that had been showing up for the 500. Rick Mast won the pole for the inaugural Brickyard 400, and Jeff Gordon, who had lived for a time in nearby Pittsboro, Ind., won the race. Simply racing on the

historic track meant it was a great race for anyone involved that day. Everybody relates racing to either Daytona or Indy, said Bill Elliott, who finished third in the first Brickyard 400 and won it in 2002. Having NASCAR and Cup being able to go there was very important. To pull off a win there, along with Daytona dont get me wrong, all of them were big wins but that was definitely a great place to win a race. And Ive always enjoyed racing there over the years that I did race there.
state of Indiana, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the Holy Grail to you. I didnt want to see anything different come to it. To me, it was the Indy 500 and thats all it was supposed to be. But after watching the first race, the second year, I was kind of on the fence, and by the third year I was a fan of it. Luckily, my career path allowed me to come race here every year. Stewart, who has raced in the Indianapolis 500 five times and run there in the Cup Series 14 times with wins

Large number of variations key to Ford F-150 staying on By Christopher A. Randazzo top.
Ford has been at the top of the truck game for the last 37 years and for many of those years its hot seller, the F-150, has been the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. What keeps Ford and the F-Series ahead of the competition? There is no single key ingredient, but one thing that helps is the wide variety of variations that the F-150 can be had. Basically there is a Ford F-150 to fit everyones needs. Like Baskin-Robbins, Ford offers the F-150 in many different flavors. There are three cab styles to choose from, three bed lengths, four engines, two drive configurations and ten yes ten distinct trim levels. Starting with the entry-level XL, the line climbs up to the STX, XLT, FX2, Lariat, FX4, King Ranch, Raptor, Platinum and the economy numbers, which are 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. But whats a pickup truck with out a V8? Well the entry level V8 in the F150 will really catch your attention. Borrowed from the Mustang GT, this V8 is an all-aluminum DOHC 5.0 liter (or as some of us like to refer to it as the five-oh). While not the 412 horsepower it makes in the Mustang GT, in the F-150 it makes a still powerful 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. The next available engine is probably the most interesting engine ever to be placed in an F-150. The EcoBoost V6 is slated as the premium engine for the F-150. Continues on next page

Limited. There is no doubt that the four available engines make the F-150 very de-
sirable. The base engine is a 3.7 liter Duratec V6. It makes 302 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. Not bad for starters. Just as important are the EPA fuel

Ford F-150...
Continued from page 29 Displacing 3.5 liters, direct injection and a pair of turbochargers, this is its first appearance in a rear-where drive application. Power ratings for the EcoBoost are impressive 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. Ok, so you plan on using your F-150 for serious work, huh? Well Ford offers a second V8 engine for the F-150 this one being 6.2 liters. Working as the base engine in the F-250 Super Duty and optional on the F150, it is rated at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque making it the most powerful gas engine available in a light duty pickup truck. All engines are mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission. So if you want to shift gears yourself, you will have to look elsewhere. Buyers can choose between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive with any engine. The interior of the F-150 is very functional and purposeful. And in the case of the SuperCrew, it is simply huge. The back seat is limo-like which is perfect for carrying passengers but its also great for hauling large objects like TVs with its completely flat floor and large opening doors. I know the EcoBoost engine works well in car applications like the in the Ford Flex and the Taurus SHO, but in a truck? No worries my EcoBoost equipped F-150 felt strong and never lacked power. With tons of torque and no trace of turbo lag, I could hardly tell that there were two turbos under the hood. Listening carefully and getting the throttle just right, I could hear them spool up, but for the most part they go unnoticed. The numbers they deliver wont go unnoticed, though. 060 mph comes and goes in just 6.5 seconds making it one of the quickest trucks on the road. And it feels it with 90 percent of the EcoBoosts torque being available under 2000 RPM. Those are not the only impressive numbers. The EPA rates the EcoBoost F-150 at 15 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the highway. Those numbers improve to 16 in town and 22 on the highway for two-wheel drive EcoBoost models. And this truck is no wimp either it can still tow up to 11,000 lbs and has a 3,000 lb By The Numbers: payload capacity. On paved roads the F-150 drives and handles as one would expect like a real truck. It bumps and bounces, but its tough and never lets you forget it. Hit a curb? So what. A pot hole up ahead? Run through it. Its characteristics like these that Ford buyers continue to like and another reason the F-150 tops the truck list. Pricing for the Ford F-150 start at $24,000 for the base XL model and can top out near $60,000 for a nicely decked out Limited model. Ford claims that more than 30 percent of F150s crest the $35,000 mark. Being Americas top-selling pickup truck for almost four decades, the Ford F-150 remains a must-see when shopping for a full-size pickup.

Jeff Gordon looks to regain his winning form in this weekends Brickyard 400
Jeff Gordon, whose 87 career Sprint Cup victories include four at the Brickyard, said hes looking to regain his winning form as he returns to the track where he, like Tony Stewart, grew up following the Month of May activities down the road from his home. Gordon heads into this weekends race 12th in the standings and in contention for a Chase berth with seven regular season races to go, but he likely would be safely in the top 10 if not for five DNFs (Did Not Finish) in the first 19 races of the season. He said that for the most part, hes been competitive, even if the results dont show it. Competitiveness versus results are two different things for me right now, he said. Weve really struggled this year. Earlier in the year with the competitiveness, and then we started to get into competitiveness in the cars just driving better and more to my liking and the speed being there. Hes been uncharacteristically off in qualifying, with an average start of 13.1, largely due to poor results on the intermediate tracks, but hes heartened by his 12th-place start and eighth-place finish at Kentucky Speedway three weeks ago. Qualifying, weve struggled, so thats something that weve been working on, and I was very pleased with what happened at Kentucky,
and I hope we can see some more progress there on the mile-and-a-halves, he said. But its at the Brickyard where he hopes to make the biggest gains. Im very much looking forward to Indianapolis, he said. We tested there, which is always great and beneficial, but things have evolved since that test, and I think our cars have improved since that test, and well be trying to apply that when we get there. All signs of that test and things that we have planned, Im very excited. We had a shot of winning that race a couple years ago, and I always go to that track with confidence and feeling good.
