QUADRATIC EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES:
THE CONICS

A quadratic equation in two variables contains at least one

term with an exponent of 2. The graph is a conic section ,
the intersection of a plane and a cone or two cones placed
vertex to vertex.

A circle is formed when the cutting plane is parallel to the

circular base of the cone.

An ellipse is formed when the cutting plane is not parallel to the

base, but cuts the cone at an angle.

A parabola is formed when the cutting plane intersects the cone

at an angle parallel to the side.

A hyperbola is formed when the cutting plane cuts through both

cones perpendicular to the bases. (A hyperbola always has two
branches.).

The conic sections have applications in optics (lenses), acoustics

(auditorium design), astronomy (orbits of planets and comets),
physics (paths of projectiles), and engineering (bridge design).

THE PARABOLA EQUATION: y = ax + bx + c (a ≠ 0)

Determine the a, b, c values for the following equations:

y = 2x2 - 3x + 4; a= b= c=

y = x2 - 6x - 7; a= b= c=

y = -8x2 + 4; a= b= c=

y = -x2; a= b= c=

THE GRAPHING CALCULATOR
Compare the following sets of equations on the graphing
calculator.

1. What effect does the coefficient of the x-squared term

(a) have on the graph?
y = x2
y = -x2
2
y = 8x
y = -¼x2

2. What effect does the constant term (c) have on the

graph?
y = x2
y = x2 + 2
y = 2x2 - 1
y = -x2 - 3

3. What effect does the coefficient of the linear term (b)

have on the graph?
y = x2
y = x2 + 2x
y = -3x2 - 4x
y = x2 - 4x + 4

CONCLUSIONS FROM PARABOLA GRAPHS
(y = ax2 + bx + c)

1. y = ax2 + bx + c
If a > 0 Parabola opens up
Parabola has minimum point
If a < 0 Parabola opens down
Parabola has maximum point

If a > 0 (positive) If a < 0 (negative)

minimum turning point maximum turning point

➠Curve is infinite in two directions (has arrows) if no

interval is stated.

CONCLUSIONS FROM PARABOLA GRAPHS
2
(y = ax + bx + c)
2. The smaller the |a|, the wider the parabola
The larger the |a|, the more narrow the parabola

2
3. The constant term (y = ax + bx + c ) is the y-intercept,
the y-value where the graph crosses the y-axis.

2
4. The coefficient of the x-term (y = ax + bx + c) gives
information on the location of the axis of symmetry.
➠ If b = 0 (y = ax2 + c), axis of symmetry is y-axis.
➠ If b ≠ 0, parabola moves left or right of y-axis.

AXIS OF SYMMETRY
Axis of symmetry acts as a mirror line for the parabola.
The two sides are mirror images.

**EQUATION OF AXIS OF SYMMETRY IS:

(y = ax2 + bx + c)

Each point on left has a corresponding point on the

right at same distance from axis of symmetry

GRAPHING A PARABOLA
1. Prepare a table of values , usually 7 points, one on the
axis of symmetry , 3 on either side. If the interval for
the x-values is given, use that interval. If no interval is
given, use the equation for the axis of symmetry to get
the middle x-value, then choose 3 values on either side.
Substitute into the parabola equation to obtain the
corresponding y-values.

2. Plot the 7 points

3. Connect the points with a smooth curve. Write equation

on the graph.

-5

• Find coordinates of turning point (vertex) from

the graph.
• Write equation of axis of symmetry from graph.
• Add axis of symmetry to graph as a dotted line.
x-value of vertex or turning point is always used
for the axis of symmetry for all parabolas that
open up and down.
• Find x-intercepts (x-values where graph intersects
x-axis, remember y is zero). Write in solution set.
• Find y-intercept (y-value where graph intersects
y-axis). Remember it is the constant term.
