Franziska Schmidt-Dengler CSP talks about the 22nd International Conference on S ports Rehabilitation and Traumatology "With thanks

to Physiopod UK Limited, who were one of only forty invited exhibit ors at the event, I was recently able to attend and have provided my feedback fo r the interest of others wishing to attend the Conference in Milan in 2014" Nottingham, England, July 25, 2013 -- "Mary and Julie had kindly offered me a gu est pass as I am working with the DEEP OSCILLATION Sports in my clinic in Putney. The other two were given to Simon Crampton, MSc MCSP SRP, Head of Sports Medic ine, MK Dons, who successfully uses DEEP OSCILLATION at the club and Matthew Pain , PhD Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University, who is using a new device in t he PhysioPod range of equipment, the Contrex, which is used for biomechanical tes ting, training, rehabilitation, sport and research. In total there were 130 keynote speakers ranging from Medical Staff, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Rehabilitation Specialists, Technical and Coaching Staff, all lecturi ng on topics of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Fifteen hu ndred delegates were in attendance at the Congress and it was spread over three floors. We could choose from three lectures that were going ahead at the same ti me. There were two auditoriums and one suite. Unfortunately I was not able to follow all of them! My choice was as follows: Saturday Muscle injury prevention Roald Bahr (NOR), Muscle injuries: developments over th e last 30 years Hans Wilhelm Mller-Wohlfahrt (GER), Muscle injuries: the proposal of a new classification system Peter Ueblacker (GER) Function is the key James Calder (UK), Biotechnology in the tendons healing Albe rto Gobbi (ITA) The prevalence of hip abnormalities in soccer players Bert Mandelbaum (USA), doe s the Sportsmans hernia exist? Chris Bradshaw (AUS), Return to sport following gr oin pain/ pathology Bryan English (UK) Imaging muscle and tendons Current trends and the future Simon Blease (UK), Groi n pain and FAI imaging Mario Padron (ESP), The role of the ultrasound for the sp orts physician Pierpaolo Zunarelli (ITA) The rehabilitation of a football player with quadriceps femoris trauma Tohaneanu et al (Romania), Delayed proximal rectus femoris reconstruction in three high-l evel athletes Bajwa AS et al (UK), Su Jok Acu therapy. Non invasive treatments f or musculotendineous injuries in football Benson M (UK) Sunday The use of platelet rich plasma: current scientific evidence Nicola Maffulli (IT A), PRP experiences in muscle and tendon injuries: clinical experience with foot ballers Ramon Cugat (ESP), PRP in patellar tendon pathology Elizaveta Kon (ITA) Differences in musculotendineous injuries between Dutch amateur and professional soccer players Van Beijsterveldt AMC et al (NL) Differences in musculotendineous injury rates between soccer clubs: a prospectiv e study Stubbe et al. (NL) Young female football players Elvire Servien (FRA) Overuse injuries in young footballers Piero Volpi (ITA)

Injury prevention in football: FIFA 11+ and more Nicolas Mathiey (SUI) The prevention of recurring muscle injuries Kyriakos Tsapralis (ITA) Perfecting the rehabilitation process Holly Silvers (USA) The role of the chiropractor Franco Cento (ITA) Lessons from Track &Field Juan Manueal Alonso (ESP) Lumbar instability, videoflyoroscopic analysis and prolotherapy injections in fo otball Simon Petrides (UK) The role of spinal stability in the prevention of musculo-tendineous injuries of the extremities in soccer Clive Lathey (UK) Soft tissue injuries of and around the spine Michel Mayer (GER) The importance of physical therapies in the management of a complex tendinopathy Karen Hambly (UK) Physical therapies in rehabilitation Steve Kemp (UK) Which modality to choose and when Phil Glasgow (UK) My personal favorites: Mller-Wohlfahrt For his ability to diagnose the severity of a muscle injury using his palpation skills. Secondly for the emphasis he placed on the importance of team spirit. (Although he created some controversy for his use of infiltration of Actovegin (a deproteinized hemodialysate from calf blood), he left an impres sion. Tohaneanu for taking into account psychological aspects of the player for injury prevention, although he was criticized for not training in the sand to over sti mulate the Quadratus femoris muscle. Bajwa for his honest answer to my question if he would consider MLD post surgery? (Although it was no) Benson achieved amazing results with the alternative, non-invasive Su Jok Acu. If she can do it, Im sure MLD practitioners can also climb up to the next Isokinetic Conference (if you havent already done so). Cento (Chiropractor), because he admitted that some players like to be touched b efore a game, but when he is unsure how the player would react to a profound tre atment, just before the play he would give a sham treatment. (Just to point out the importance of touch). Holly Silvers, because the rehabilitation process she proposes is amazing Kemp, because he is so honest and shows that even if everything is perfectly wel l planned, even in elite sport the therapy doesnt always follow the therapy plan, mistakes are being made and Kemp offered everyone the opportunity to learn from them. What I personally take away from this Conference and Im sure you could pass on to your patients are the following: FIFA 11+ injury prevention for injuries: http://f-marc.com/11plus/home/

Please look it up, it is a really good tool and emphasizes on the quality of mov ement, not on quantity Team Spirit Elite Sports people are also human There really was not a lot of talking about MLD. However, I believe strongly sur geons should consider MLD post surgery and post injury. It was a sports doctor who made me take MLD courses as he wanted his patients to benefit from MLD and I still use MLD as one of my most preferred techniques. And my wish is to have ML D more represented. (But I have a slight feeling, they might use MLD already anywa y and just dont want to give their little secret away?)"
