Control characteristics
Digital control Analogue control

The patented 2-gear drive permits automatic torque measurement and differential speed control. The main motor drives the bowl and simultaneously the housing of the secondary gear via the housing of the primary gear. The speed-controlled secondary motor drives the input shaft of the secondary gear. Due to the extremely sensitive analogue control a relatively small and hence cost-saving differential speed control range is sufficient for normal applications. The position of this control range can be selected by changing the belt drive transmission between the main motor and the housing of the secondary gear. Due to the driving effect of the secondary motor which takes over part of the conveyor screw drive power, load is taken off the main drive motor. The 2-gear drive is recommended if: the discharged solids from the decanter are to have the lowest possible residual moisture the decanter is to be run at the smallest possible differential speeds with maximum solids discharge volumes the discharged solids are to have a uniform DS content despite fluctuating production conditions the capacity is to be increased as compared to the decanters with standard drive.

Operating principles of the 2-gear drive

The height of the torque between the bowl and the conveyor screw depends on the nature of the solids, the solids level in the bowl, the bowl speed and other factors. The power consumption of the secondary motor 7 depends on the torque between the conveyor screw and bowl. The basic differential speed remains constant as long as the torque does not exceed the control begin. If the torque exceeds this value, the controller increases continuously the frequency-controlled motor speed and hence the differential speed. The increased differential speed accelerates the conveyance of the solids in the bowl. Reduction in the solids volume results in corresponding reduction of the torque at the conveyor screw. Consequently, the controller reacts to the decreasing torque by reducing the speed of the secondary motor, which results in a drop in the differential speed. If, in spite of the increase in differential speed, the torque does not drop, the product supply is closed upon reaching the torque step 1. If, however, the torque continues to increase then the decanter is switched off via torque step 2. The secondary motor remains in operation for a preset period. By this means, the solids are normally removed from the bowl. After the bowl has come to a standstill, immediate restarting is possible.

Advantages
Torque-dependent differential speed control The basic differential speed can be altered by exchanging the belt pulleys (1,9). Differential speed control range Analogue torque indicator Reliable overload protection (electrical, without shear pin); the machine can be re-started immediately. Improved officiency due to internal feedback Available for installation in explosive surroundings Low space requirement Maintenance-free and environment-friendly

Design of motor control

The motor control comprises: control unit tor adjusting the control begin control gradient torque step 1 torque step 2 digital display of bowl and differential speed motor temperature protection during start-up and operation safety interlocking of feed (premature opening of valve or starting of pump in product feed is prevented) indication of current for main and secondary motor hour counter

BowI and conveyor screw drive

As in case of the gear drive in the standard decanter version the bowl (9) is driven by the main motor (3) via clutch and V-belts. To change the bowl speed both belt pulleys of this drive must be exchanged. The primary gear (8) whose housing is firmly connected to the bowl and rotates at the same speed, drives the conveyor screw (10) via the driven shaft. The secondary gear (5) is driven by the secondary motor (7). In addition the driven shaft of the secondary gear is connected to the drive shaft of the primary gear on which the housing of the secondary gear (5) rotates. Due to an internal power feedback to the bowl drive (3) the housing of the secondary gear (5) is braked via the variable-speed drive (6). To change the basic differential speed both belt pulleys of the variable speed drive (6) must be exchanged. With analogue control this basic differential speed can be raised.
