Fiji Airways Appoints Stefan Pichler As The New CEO

After an extensive global search, the Fiji Airways board has appointed Stefan Pichler as our national airlines new managing director and chief executive. Mr Pichler is currently finishing off his term as the chief executive of Middle-Eastern Kuwait-based Jazeera Airways. His appointment comes into effect from September 1 and until then, Aubrey Swift will continue acting as chief executive. Mr Pichler is said to have led Jazeera Airways in the last four years to a remarkable turnaround, achieving the highest operating profit margins in the industry in 2011 and 2012. He was recently awarded the Personal Achievement of the Year Award 2012 by Business Aviation for the Jazeera Airways turnaround. Mr Patel, in a statement, said Mr Pichler is a proven chief executive with a strong track record in turning businesses around and growing them to new levels. He has extensive global experience not only in all airline business models, but also in the tourism industry, he said. Mr Pichler said he was excited to join Fiji Airways on the road ahead to build a bright future based on a strong brand and a dedicated team. Together, we will build a company which every Fijian can be proud of, he said. Other achievements Mr Pichler was also responsible for Virgin Blues transformation from a low cost carrier to a network airline and served as their chief commercial officer. He also launched Virgin Blue s long haul carrier V Australia in 2008 and served as its chairman.

Mr Pichler was also formerly the chairman and chief executive of Thomas Cook AG, where he built the company from a national German tour operator to the worlds second largest leisure group. He has also held senior and executive board roles with Lufthansa AG. Getting the right person The Attorney-General and Minister for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, labelled the appointment as a remarkable confluence of the right person in the right place at the right time. Mr Pichlers distinctive career experience and outstanding accomplishments established him as

the best possible fit for chief executive of Fiji Airways, he said. We are confident that under his leadership, Fiji Airways will continue to modernise, grow and prosper as we move forward into the future in this significant new chapter in the history of Fiji Airways. Mr Pichler is taking charge as the momentum for progress is already in placea solid partnership among all the staff of the airline, all interested in the same thingthe continued success of Fiji Airways. Mr Patel assured Mr Pichler of the full support of the board and experienced management team and also thanked Mr Swift for acting as the interim chief

executive. Benchmark by Pflieger Under the leadership and guidance of the former chief executive, Dave Pflieger, our national airline saw a big turnaround having reported an operating profit of $16.5 million for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012. This is in comparison to an operating loss of $3.7 million for the March 31, 2011 financial year and its biggest ever operating loss of $91.8 million three years ago. Mr Pflieger has therefore set a benchmark with this and the successful restructure, rebranding and fleet upgrade and replacement. About the new chief Mr Pichler joined Jazeera Airways K.S.C., a public-listed airline on the Kuwait Stock Exchange, in June 2009 as the chief executive. He launched a successful turnaround programme in the same year and since July 2010 the company has returned to sustainable profitability with 12 consecutive quarters of record profits until today. The company achieved the highest operating profit margins in the global industry with 25 per cent in 2011 and 30 per cent in 2012. Mr Pichler was responsible for the turnaround and of the future growth strategy of one of the few profitable and privately-owned regional airline groups. Since 2004, Mr Pichler was part of Richard Bransons senior management team. He was responsible for Virgin Blues transformation from a low cost carrier to a new world network airline. Virgin Blue became one of the most profitable global airlines in 2006 and 2007 with a double digit profit after tax margin.

Fiji Born Man Delivers Royal Message

Tearful Farewell For Krishna

Family and friends gathered for the final rites at the 41-year-old's funeral. Mr Naidu, director of Capture Fiji, and his worker Ella Blakelock, 44, were reported missing one month ago after failing to return home from a business trip to the West. Bodies of both individuals were retrieved from the car they were travelling in that was found submerged in a swampy waterway between Nasasa and Vakabalea in Navua. Krishna Naidu's father, Narayan Murthi Naidu said they were still trying to come to terms with their son's death. "We had seen him a week before he went missing as he came home for some prayers and here, he met the whole family before he left on Monday morning and he returned to the West on Wednesday for work-related activities," Mr Naidu said. "While he was presumed missing, we had lived with the hope that Krishna was alive and would come back to us. "He was very close to his family and when we spoke to him last, he said he was a free man because he had cleared all his debts with the bank he had taken a loan to finance his business." Unable to stop his tears, an emotional Mr Naidu said he was able to go through the pain, but his wife still had not come to terms with her son's death. "She is a mother after all, and she will be unable to see him for the last time because Krishna's body has decomposed." Elder sister of the deceased Vijay Reshmi had travelled to Fiji from Australia in the hope of finding her younger brother after he had gone missing, but she, like other members of the Naidu family, had to face a grim reality. "Through these hard times, we would just like to thank everyone who had helped us in our search from the bottom of our hearts. We are very grateful for their help," she said. "My daughter-in-law will be staying with us and we will look to move past this tragedy and as for Krishna's business, we will see what is to be done once the funeral is finished." About 150 family members and friends gathered at the funeral.

A Fiji born man played an important role in the announcement of the news of Prince William and Kates baby boy. The Fiji born man who cannot be named due to protocol delivered the official notification of the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridges baby boy from St Marys hospital in London to Buckingham Palace where thousands of people were waiting outside. The message delivered by him was then displayed outside Buckingham Palace for the waiting crowds to see. The British High Commission in Fiji confirmed that the Fiji born man is a driver for Prince William and Kate

Middleton and is thought of very highly to have been chosen to be part of the royal staff. The Duchess of Cambridge delivered a boy at 5.24 this morning, and the Duke of Cambridge was present. Prince William said he and his wife Catherine could not be happier to welcome their first child. The mother and her child are both doing well. The baby is third in line for the British throne after his grandfather Prince Charles and father Prince William. The babys name has not yet been announced but he will be known as the Prince of Cambridge.

Voter Registration To Continue: PM

The Fiji Elections Office will continue its electronic voter registration. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during the Heads of Missions consultation said: We plan to keep registering voters until the election writs are issued. The Fiji Elections Office is tipped to soon begin another phase of voter registration. Any Fijian over the age of 18 or who turns 18 before the election writs are issued is entitled to register to vote in the 2014 elections. The public have been encouraged to register themselves in order to vote. So far, the Elections Office has recorded a total of 533,553 registered voters. Commodore Bainimarama said this figure represents more than 80 per cent of eligible voters. Overseas voter registration In the pipeline are plans to register Fijians living overseas. Prime Minister Bainimarama said they will require the assistance of the 17 Heads of Missions overseas to get the job done. He said that government had embarked on a massive drive of voter registration using biometric technology that will help eliminate vote fraud and identity theft. New constitution Commodore Bainimarama also highlighted that Fijis new constitution will introduce overdue democratic principles for the first time. For the first time, an electoral system that removes the legal enforcement of ethnic voting, enshrines one person, one vote, one value and helps voters focus on the merits of the policies the respective political parties are offering. It will introduce an entirely new regime of accountability and transparency, he said. While plans for overseas registrations are still being finalised, Fijians living abroad are eager to register themselves. Response Attorney General and Minister Responsible for the Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum after Phase III of voter registration said government was delighted by the high turnout. Fijians continue to respond eagerly to the opportunity to register, which clearly demonstrates how enthusiastic they are to take part in the elections next year, he said. In Phase III, Fijians who were immobile or faced genuine difficulty in reaching their nearest registration centre were visited at their homes by a voter registration team. Those who have registered are advised to check their entries and have them corrected if necessary. Meanwhile, a report by visiting elections experts is expected to be finalised soon. The three member team carried out a Gap Analysis/Needs Assessment to identify the capacity needs of the Elections Office. Their final report will help the international community identify how best to contribute to the elections process.

Bad weather in Mumbai India has shut down public services, schools and colleges. This after high tides of up to 4 to 4.5 metres and a continuous downpour began hitting Indias film capital since Monday. All railway services were halted as waters flooded the railway tracks. Being the only Fijian student along with two other foreign students at a hostel in the West of Mumbai, we remained calm in our college hostel premises as we are taken care of by our warden who keeps us informed on the situation. For now, our classes at Patkar College

in Goregaon West Mumbai, have not been held because of the closure of railway services. Our hostel security personnel have also remained at the hostel because of the difficulties in transport. According to the weather forecast, heavy rain warnings remain throughout the week together with high tides of around 4 metres. We students are concerned about the homeless who remain without shelter in the streets of Mumbai. Our warden Ashmita Devi has attributed the recent adverse weather in Mumbai to the monsoon season. We remain safe.

FEA Records $75.3M Net Profit

The Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) rose above the challenges of last year performing admirably recording a financial net profit of $75.3 million after tax last year. This was a big leap as in comparison, a net profit after tax of $51.9 million was recorded in 2011. Attorney-General and Minister for Public Enterprises, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum said this was an enormous improvement from the previous records. FEA has had a lot of contribution from a very good management and a reduction of expenses, he said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum attributed the key factors of the increased profit to three things: - The good rate of energy production by Monosavu Hydro; - The commissioning of the Nadarivatu Hydro Dam; and, - The conversion of diesel generators from industrial engine oil to heavy fuel oil that has reduced cost. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the key challenge was to keep up achieving this result for the years to come. This is as there obviously has been some requirements of the financial output in terms of meeting debts requirement that FEA has, he said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also acknowledged that the electricity tariff rates had been reduced by five per cent stating Fiji had the lowest tariff rates till today in the Pacific Where will profits go? Fiji Electricity Authority chairman, Nizam-ud-Dean, people might be wondering where all the money from the profit goes to. All this money goes to two things; first to the capital works we have to do to ensure that the system grows and of course secondly to maintain its reliability, he said. The common problem in this country is that when things are made they are left there until they fall out before they do the repair work. Large amount of cost has been put in place to ensure the maintenance of the machines and equipment. Monasavu refurbishment Mr Nizam-ud-Dean revealed the authority is currently refurbishing the entire Monosavu Hydro Scheme. This year we have $12million of works worth to do and the total of the works is $44 to 45 million, he said. Debt portfolio Mr Nizam-ud-Dean said their total debt portfolio is $330million. In order to pay for that, we have to make at least $40 million profit per annum, he said. Unfortunately all the money doesnt stay with us and we have to borrow and borrowings has its limits. All our borrowings need to be cleared by Government and we have to pay all our debts and also have a certain margin of profit to cover the loans from banks.

Fiji Pilots Breadfruit

FIJI has been chosen to pilot a climate adaptation agriculture project, which if successful could be mirrored in other parts of the Pacific. The Pacific Breadfruit Project that began in the Western Division earlier this month is seen as the answer to addressing the expected global decrease of overall rice production in tropical countries because of climate change. According to the first collaborating corporate bodies piloting the project, Natures Way Ltd and Kokosiga Company, the first breadfruit orchards would be established in Nadi. Kokosiga Company manager Livai Tora said the main objective of PBP was the establishment of breadfruit as a commercial small holder based orchard crop. "Specifically to achieve this objective, the PBP has embarked on a number of applied research activities," Mr Tora said. "These are being implemented in the Western Division and include setting up trials to determine best propagation practices for mass production of breadfruit seedlings of marketpreferred varieties, including the evaluation of tissue cultured breadfruit using a bioreactor system. "In collaboration with a private sector partner, a model commercial scale breadfruit nursery is being established to produce large volumes of high quality seedlings for the field trials and orchard establishment. "Despite the abundance of breadfruit trees around Fiji, and in other Pacific Islands, no nursery facility currently produces large quantities of the preferred breadfruit varieties. This lack of planting material is a factor that has precluded farmers from planting breadfruit orchards. "Other key areas that would be implemented in the project include establishing field trials to determine best agronomic practices for commercial breadfruit orchards, economic analysis to support identification of best practices for a commercial breadfruit orchard, and information dissemination that promote best practices for commercial breadfruit production."

Fiji Airways Continues To Soar

Air Pacific Limited, which recently rebranded to Fiji Airways, has recorded another record-breaking year in terms of its revenue and passenger numbers. Fiji Airways announced its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013. The national airline reported a profit before income tax of $18 million compared to a profit before income tax of $16.5 million for the previous financial year. Excluding prior period adjustments, Fiji Airways delivered an underlying profit before income tax of $9.5 million. Meanwhile, the Air Pacific Group reported a profit before income tax of $22.4 million, compared to a profit before income tax of $14.2 million for 2011/12. Excluding prior period adjustments, Air Pacific Group delivered a profit before income tax of $13.4 million. The group includes Fiji Airways, its wholly-owned subsidiary Pacific Sun and a 38.75 per cent stake in Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau Island in Nadi. On a net basis, Fiji Airways reported an after tax profit of $14.1 million and Air Pacific Group reported an after tax profit of $17.8 million (versus after tax profits of $11.4 million and $10.7 million respectively for 2011/12). In addition, and before any further increase in the size of its fleet, Fiji Airways increased annual revenue by $13.8 million compared to 2011/2012, and by $104.3 million compared to FY2010/2011. The airline also carried 14,167 more passengers than in 2011/12, and 99,649 more passengers than in 2010/2011. The results mark a second year of sustained operating profit, just three short years after the airline experienced the biggest loss in its history. Decreased underlying profit explained Fiji Airways chairman, Nalin Patel, attributed the airlines decrease in underlying operating profit this year to a number of events. He said the floods in April 2012, Cyclone Evan in December 2012, expenditures related to rebranding the airline, and costs related to preparation for induction of its airlines new fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft all affected this. Given that we initially expected to make a loss during this transition year, wherein we are exiting our older B747s and inducting our first ever owned A330 wide-body aircraft, Im quite pleased with our results for 2012/13, Mr Patel said. These results handily beat our business plan, and I continue to be thrilled with the successful turnaround of Fijis national airline. Credit for this must be given to our dedicated and hard-working employees. Focus now Mr Patel said their focus now was on inducting the new Airbus A330s and expediting efficiencies in its fleet and schedule this year. We have consistently stated that our restructure and turnaround plan is an on-going process, and we are still not done yet, he said. Our team knows there is a lot of hard work and commitment required to see the changes through to completion. Our plan is to build a platform to be sustainably profitable and to allow our staff, shareholders and the entire country to benefit from our success. We remain ever mindful of the possible challenges posed by market uncertainty, a slowdown of major world economies, and the ever-present threat of further volatility in oil prices. A national success The Attorney-General and Minister for Civil Aviation, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, described Fiji Airways as a national success story. The dramatic turnaround of Fiji Airways is an accomplishment by a focused management team and dedicated workers all pulling in the same direction, he said. We are very proud of our national airline and grateful for the vision, the steady leadership and hard work that put Fiji Airways solidly in the black and restored the Fiji Airways brand. And we are undergoing a seamless transition to a solid new leadership team that will continue this upward trend.

Rapist Gets 5 Years

A 74-YEAR-OLD man will spend the next five years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to raping a five-year-old girl in Lautoka in 2011. The High Court in Lautoka sentenced the man who confessed to raping his step granddaughter. According to the court, the accused was alone with the victim in her parents' bedroom when the incident happened. The incident was reported to the police by the victim's elder brother who witnessed the offence. While sentencing the accused, Justice Paul Madigan said the offence was a serious breach of trust in a domestic context and the age difference of 67 years. He said the court would take into account the psychological harm that had almost certainly been occasioned to the young victim. Justice Madigan ordered that the accused spend five years in prison and would be eligible for parole after serving four years of his term.

She was last seen at Field 40 in Lautoka on the night of June 19 with her boss Krishna Swamy Naidu, 44, of Capture Fiji in Samabula, Suva. They were reported missing on June 21 after checks by the two families with relatives and friends proved negative. Their bodies were retrieved last Friday from the yellow Hyundai car registration FG762 that plunged into the Busa river in Navua. In her eulogy, Ms Blakelock's sister Maryanne Ah Sam said Ella came into their family when she was three months old. "She had a beautiful smile, she loved her life and she had an artistic flair. She had her share of highs and lows in life," she said. "I was amazed with her physical strength and gentle caring nature. We remember her as a free spirit who enjoyed life. "She had so much love to give and she always looked at the bright side of life. She had nothing negative to say about anyone," said Ms Ah Sam. Ella's mother Charlotte Blakelock was visibly shocked at the funeral service, shedding tears as the pastor shared some words of hope. About 100 family members and friends bid their final farewell to Ella in a dignified way. Police said the post-mortem examination revealed injuries suffered by Mr Naidu and Ms Blakelock were consistent to that from a motor vehicle accident. Their bodies were decomposed after being in the water for one month.

FNPF And FRCA To Release Joint Id Cards

Start Your Own Business!

The Fiji National Provident Fund and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority will issue their Joint Identity Card to members of the public from Monday, next week. The collaboration initiative is an extension and enhancement to the Memorandum of Understanding reached on September 12, 2011 which is aimed at maximising revenue and contributions through effective and efficient information sharing. The two institutions would endeavor to explore opportunities that arise from the synergy and in particular adding value to the Joint ID for the convenience and benefit of members and customers alike. The card will be rolled out in phases and by locations as the process will affect over 700,000 taxpayers. The card will be issued first to 250,000 FNPF members, who also have a Tax Identification Number (TIN). Both organisations have identified Suva as the first location for the card rollout as it has a majority of the countrys workers. The rollout to the rest of the country will be announced in due course. In recent weeks, FNPF and FRCA have been testing the new system with the pilot phases conducted for internal and external parties. Both organisations share a common database, which contains only the necessary details for the issuance of the card. All the other details such as members balances or taxpayer details are not shared by the two parties. The issuance of the Joint ID Card is also an opportunity for the two organisations to cleanse their data for consistency in records. For this reason, the Birth Certificate has

been made a primary document for the validation of names. The Birth Certificate must be a full extract and should contain the birth registration number. The verification of names is very important to prevent identity thefts and to also ensure that the names recorded with both institutions are consistent with the records kept by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. FRCA Chief Executive, Mr Jitoko Tikolevu said there have been identity thefts as well as people holding numerous TINs. FNPF Chief Executive Mr Aisake Taito said the new cards would enhance members & taxpayers experience in obtaining services that require these key identifiers. To obtain a joint ID card, the following is required: 1. Completion of the joint card request form to register and obtain the new FRCA/FNPF Identification (ID) card. 2. Submission of the full extract of Birth Certificate, which has the birth registration number. Birth certificates that were issued prior to 2000, do not contain this 3. Submission of the FNPF card. 4. In the absence of the above, a photo ID such as the Electronic Voter Registration (EVR) card, Driving License, Passport, employee ID. The photo must be easily recognisable as a true likeness of the person. In the absence of a photo ID, members of the public may submit a passport sized photo certified by a Justice of Peace, Provincial Administrator, Commissioner or Oaths or by FNPF/ FRCA Customer Service Counter Officers. Women who wish to use their marriage name will have to also submit their marriage certificates. The existing FNPF card has to be returned when the new FRCA/FNPF ID card is issued. Those who have a Tax Identification Number only will be issued with the Joint ID Card later in the year. They may use their TIN letters until then.

Golan Duty
THE Republic of Fiji Military Forces will boost its numbers to 500 military personnel on duty at the Golan Heights by the end of this week, says Fiji's permanent representative to the United Nations Peter Thomson. Last month 182 Fijians left the country and an additional troop of 318 with 10 staff officers, who have completed their training, are expected to leave Thursday and Saturday. Mr Thomson, who is in the country for the heads of missions consultations, said these troops would replace the Austrian Battalion which had withdrawn. "We are going there as the Northern Infantry Battalion," he said. "As the permanent representative to the United Nations, I make sure I am present in all meetings and look after Fiji's interests which ranges from oceanic issues, seabed matters and climate change." He said Fiji's biggest interest was, of course, the peacekeeping mission where his office in New York was interacting with governments that were on peacekeeping missions as part of the UN Disengagement Observer Force. Mr Thomson said the UN office in New York managed the entire peacekeeping mission around the world. He said the role of Fijian soldiers was to monitor the border of Syria and Israel. He said at this stage, this was the number that would be deployed. Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama earlier said Fiji's soldiers were putting their lives on the line on the other side of the world, not waging war but keeping the peace and ensuring the safety of others. The troop of 318 will join the 182-member troop already there. Croatian, Japanese and Austrian peacekeepers in the Golan Heights left after facing escalating violence spilling over from the Syrian civil conflict.

The Fiji regime leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says the Corrections Service must adhere and uphold international standards and best practices. The prime minister made the comment at the opening of a new remand and detention centre. The comment comes after he defended last years videotaped abuse of recaptured remand prisoners.

Fiji PM Says Corrections Must Adhere To International Standards

Neither the polices nor the regimes investigation into the beating has been completed, but Commodore Bainimarama said he would stand by the police officers or anyone else who would be named. At the opening of the remand centre, he said a bottom line is a commitment that all Fijians human dignity remains intact.

THREE Fijian Scouts left to attend the 30th Asia Pacific Regional Jamboree in Yamaguchi, Japan to be held next month. Team leader Petero Delainauluvatu, 47, has been a member of the Scout Movement for 17 years and is the assistant district commissioner in Lomaiviti for the Fiji Scouts Association. Emosi Waqabaca, 15, and Asenaca Daucakacaka, 13, of Queen Victoria School and Dudley Intermediate School, respectively, are the other two Scouts chosen. Waqabaca, a senior Scout who has been in the movement for three years, says he is looking forward to the trip and learning about Japanese culture. Daucakacaka, a patrol leader who has been a member of the Fiji Scouts

Trip Of A Lifetime For Three Scouts

Association for two years, was visibly excited about the trip. "I'm so excited and so happy about this trip," she said. This will be the first overseas trip for all three, who are sponsored by the Scouts Association of Japan. Mr Delainauluvatu said he was grateful to the Scouts Association of Japan for the opportunity. "We'll be learning about the life and culture in Japan before the jamboree starts on the first of August," he said. Fiji Scouts Association president Abhay Nand said the association's 8000 members were recognised for their hard work in recent years. "Fiji Scouts is 99 years old and next year, we are looking forward to holding the centenary event," Mr Nand said.

350 student cadets that passed out from Xavier Colleges parade at Govind Park in Ba this week were reminded on the significance of pass out parades. Officiating at the event, the Minister for Defense and Guest of Honour, Joketani Cokanasiga told the students that the event moulds discipline and courage. Continue to strive for excellence in whatever you do. A nation is not great because of its Government. A nation is great because of its people. Be leaders of your nation. The Government has a vision of achieving a better Fiji for all however this vision cannot be achieved and sustained unless there is commitment to this vision.

This commitment must come from, not only the current generation, but more so, from the next generation that is you Cadets. The Minister urged the teenagers not to be swayed by peer pressure and other degrading activities. Most of you are reaching an age where you are in the process of finding yourself a place in our society, in a peer group, finding lifelong friends and making choices that will define the rest of your life, Minister Cokanasiga said. "By adhering to the principles of exemplary speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, I believe that wherever you find yourself, you will be able to provide leadership to those around you.

University Doctor Honoured

Tears flowed as students, colleagues and members of the medical fraternity paid tribute to the late Dr Umanand Prasad, founder of the University of Fijis medical school. Considered a visionary and Fijis biggest individual philanthropist, the Labasa native made a tearful pledge of $1 million in 2006. It was for the construction of the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine. It was money he did not possess but his strong will saw funds raised over four years and the establishment of a flourishing school where he committed $45,000 worth of scholarships for students. He was killed in a car accident two weeks ago. Speaking at the memorial service, the Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma, said it would have been a befitting and proud moment in December this year for the late Dr Prasad see his first crop of graduating students. That will not be, but you can be reassured that his spirit will live on, the Minister said. He said Dr Prasads legacy would be hard to emulate. Also paying tribute on behalf of the medical student body was Adi Motea

The Ministry of Health is encouraging families around the country to contact dietitians at their nearest health facilities to get in dept information on nutrition and balanced diet. Minister Dr Neil Sharma made this call after noticing a need for dietitians to train families including women on ways to have a proper diet. The Health Minister said that this will greatly assist authorities in combating non communicable diseases which accounts for 80 per cent of deaths in Fiji. Our dietitians can hold cooking demos for mothers as well as those organizations that need it. The cooking demonstration will include ways to prepare healthy meals using local produce with less sugar and salt content, Dr Sharma said. The Ministry will also demonstrate how to eat same meals but in a much healthier way. Public need to know the amount of oil, salt and sugar they have to use during cooking to decrease risks of Cardiovascular disease, High blood pressure, Diabetics and Kidney

failure, he added. We also need to ensure that children are nurtured in such a manner that when they grow up they are disease free and live a healthier life. Mothers should see that their children go to school with lunch box and with healthier foods inside. Dr Sharma also called on parents to avoid giving money to children to buy junk food from canteens. Parents should play an active role in ensuring that children dont eat junk food or drink sugary drinks which will have a long term effect on their health. We should act now to ensure our children are NCD free, he said. Meanwhile, the Second Steps survey by World Health Organization in 2011 revealed that one out of every three Fijians has Diabetes. Previously it was one out of five. The Ministry has also called upon relevant stakeholders, NGOs, faith based organizations and individuals to work with government to avoid premature deaths from NCDs.

Government Agencies Meet To Teachers Cannot Serve On School Improve National Security Policies Committees
The Ministry of Education has issued a stern reminder to all teachers not to serve in school committees. Permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal pointed this out at a meeting of the Western Division School Management Board during the opening of the Nadi Special School this week. Dr Lal also highlighted the need to revise school constitution by management every five years. The school constitution must be reviewed every five years and it must be functional. Schools with outdated constitution must do some immediate

work, Dr Lal said. Dr. Brij Lal said the district and divisional education officers have been delegated powers to attend to cases from within their district as well as have the authority over transfer of teachers. Education officers at the district offices have been delegated the powers to deal with cases and that of transferring teachers within their districts. These services have been brought closer to the community. Now, you do not have to go to Suva for these services, Dr Lal said.

Representatives from various government agencies met the department security liaison officers workshop to look at ways of strengthening Fijis national security policies and propose recommendations for emerging challenges. The Ministry of Defence acting permanent secretary Mr Osea Cawaru highlighted that National Security arrangements in past years have been based on loose-policy making arrangements characterised by a lack of coordination and duplication of effort. The Ministry of Defence, National Security and Immigration in an effort to address this capability shortfalls has over the last three years gradually developed the requisite policy and legal frameworks needed to revitalise and reorient the national security machinery of government for current and emerging challenges for the future, Mr Cawaru said. This has resulted in the first ever National Security Strategy and counter terrorism strategy endorsed by cabinet

on March 30th, 2010, the Critical Infrastructure Protection Policy and the National Information sharing framework in 2012, culminating in the signing of the National Combined Law and Security agencies MOU April 10th, 2013, he added, Mr Cawaru emphasised to senior government officials that through this workshop, the Ministry will ensure that government officials are provided the necessary tools to develop a supportive culture to strengthen the flow of information between government agencies and relevant stakeholders. The myriad of threats that we face as a country points to the fact that no-one agency is able to deal with, contain and respond to these threats, Mr Cawaru said. Areas that have been tabled for discussions for the next two days focus on building capacity within government to respond quickly and effectively to emerging issues and future crisis, enhancing government engagements with communities and proactively manage security risks.

been told that an expanded diplomatic presence offshore is testament to our growing influence and diverse interests in a dynamic and evolving global landscape. The comment came from Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, while opening a three-day consultation for Fijis envoys based overseas. Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji was becoming a cohesive, unified force that was truly independent.

destiny and carving out our own niche in the world. We dont see ourselves as beholden to anyone. We will act in our own interests, not the interests of those who attempt to impose their will on us. The days of us being dictated to by outsiders are over, he said. Commodore Bainimarama said this year Fiji demonstrated its leadership credentials in the Pacific region and the world.

A FOUR-MONTH-OLD baby girl died after her father allegedly slept on top of her at a village in Nadroga. Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said the father of the baby was in police custody and was being interviewed over the cause of death. "Police received a report whereby a four-month-old baby girl died after her father allegedly, while intoxicated, slept on top of her resulting in her death," Ms Naisoro said. The suspect is in custody while the body of the baby is at the Sigatoka Sub-divisional Hospital as investigations continue. "Investigations will explore the line of parental negligence and both parents will be questioned," Ms Naisoro said. She said adults needed to be more responsible and parents and guardians must prioritise the safety of their children. "We will continue to stress this as accidents can occur at any time and the issue of supervision is extremely important. "Social activities should never take

precedence over the welfare of your child, knowing the cost of leaving them unsupervised could result in injury or in a worst-case scenario, the loss of life. "This is the reason why the police continue to reiterate the need for people to weigh out the pros and cons of doing something and consider its value to you and your loved ones. "The family is now mourning the loss of their child, something that no one would ever want to go through. "However, knowing the tragic incident could have been avoided is why police will always repeat this advice." Ms Naisoro said better decision-making was the key and could ultimately save a family from suffering the loss of a loved one. "Everything starts from home and as is in the above case, losing a child in one's very own home is devastating. "This is why we will continue to plead for parents and guardians to better supervise and monitor their children."

More than 200,000 Fijians have been assisted through Governments cyclone rehabilitation programme since December last year. Following hurricane Evan late last year, major parts of the country sustained damages including homes to various Fijians and households. Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki says the rebuilding process is still continuing with homes and schools still being built. The assistance have been in various forms such as agriculture, education, homes and other forms but this is just a small way of assisting our fellow Fijians to put their lives back in order, he said. Work is continuing in the outer islands especially in the Yasawa Group which was the worst affected and we have recently handed over 10 homes

bringing the total number of homes built in the western division to 72, Cdr Cawaki said. However, this is not the end. Soldiers are still working on dormitories, dining halls and nursing stations in the rural areas to put services back to normal. The Agriculture department which had provided seedlings and cuttings immediately after the cyclone is also doing follow up checks to ensure that the seedlings have been put to good use. The Divisional Planning Officer Western (Luke Moroivalu) returned from the islands over the weekend where he visited the villages to see if assistance have been put to good use and we are happy to report that the villages have made inroads with the small assistance provided. Phase 3 of the rehabilitation programme is still ongoing.

His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau highlighted the need to remove the stigma associated with HIV & AIDS when he met with students of Sigatoka Valley High School. He was at the Sigatoka School to discuss the importance of safe sex and the need to talk about AIDS - something he said should no longer be a taboo. His inaugural visit to the school was an opportunity to point out various mechanisms put in place to promote HIV & AIDS awareness. "The Fijian government continues to

assist those that are HIV positive or have AIDS," he told the school of 235 students. The head of state was also pleased to note the reception from the students included a series of questions posed to him as Fijis ambassador on HIV & AIDS. "This is the 94th secondary school that I have visited and I am happy to note that the students are coming out to ask questions," HE Ratu Epeli said. "Continue to be role models for Fiji in the fight against HIV and AIDS."

2000 Sugar Workers To Receive 5.3 Percent Pay Rise

More than 2000 mill workers at the Fiji Sugar Corporation are getting a 5.3% pay increase, equal access to health insurance and access to the special welfare fund. Health insurance will now be available to all workers with FSC paying for 50% of the premium said the Fiji Sugar Corporation Chairman Abdul Khan. The pay raise had been in the works for more than two weeks. On July 8th, for the first time in more than two years, workers began to get

paid overtime for extra hours; and FSC Chairman Abdul Khan traveled to all four mills to meet with the staffs to thank them for their hard work and listen to their input. Khan said, We are all one family. We discuss the issues with each other, resolve them, and support each other. From the beginning, it was made clear that this would be a team effort, that we all had to work together, and that Governments top priority was to make sure that not a single job be lost. When I took this post, FSC was in bad shape, Khan continued. People were saying the sugar industry was dead and our workers were demoralized. Now, two and a half years later, FSC is in financial good health, the staff is motivated and full of confidence, and everyone is sharing the benefits of our success. The pay raise and leveling of benefits come as a result of improved performance, lowering costs and increasing output. The pay raise will be retrospective to June 1st, and applies to all workers except company executives. Weve come a long way in the past two and a half years, said Khan. Its because of the financial reforms instituted by the Bainimarama Government and the hard work being done by everyone to make FSC a more efficient and financially healthy. Everyone is pulling in the same direction.

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is urging farmers to continue the momentum of cane supply to mills around the country as the crushing season enters its second month of crushing. FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan says so far the four mills have crushed a total of 275, 000 tonnes of cane and produced in excess of 26, 200 tonnes of raw sugar in the first month of crushing. The mills are going well and we have picked up crushing especially after a few niggling breaks but we are hopeful of meeting our targets, he said. However, I still would like to urge farmers to continue supplying cane to the mills on a timely basis so that there is no more standing cane at the end of the crushing season. He added that the cane to sugar ratio had also improved compared to last

The workers knew that a pay rise was on its way and the rise had nothing to do with the unions.

The purchasing of land in Vanua Levu, Fiji by the government of Kiribati does not mean the whole population of the island nation will migrate to Fiji. That's the clarification by the Kiribati High Commissioner to Fiji, Reteta Rimon, according to reports on state media Fiji Broadcasting Corporation on Monday. Six thousand acres of land is being surveyed in Fiji's Northern Division and the purchase is close to being finalised. The land, in Savusavu, belongs to the Anglican Church of Fiji and is being sought after by the Kiribati government as rising sea levels continue to threaten their livelihood. Rimon said migrating to Fiji wasn't their priority for now. "One of the issues, maybe immediate one would be to develop the land, maybe agriculture production and maybe other economic activities but

Not All Kiribati People Will Migrate to Fiji

of course I wouldn't want to pre-empt government's decision because nothing is being finalised yet." Speaking about the effects of climate change in Kiribati wasn't easy for Rimon, but she agrees that eventually, the rising sea levels will force them out of their land, and Fiji could become home to some. "In the long term, when our land is no longer inhabitable, those who have the means and wish to move, perhaps there's somewhere they could go to, but of course my government will be talking to the Fijian government. We're not going to just have a lot of people coming over to settle as reported by the media." Rimon said the feedback from the Fijian government has been very positive, at the same time praising the support shown towards the people of Kiribati. The population of Kiribati stands at 101,093.

A few disappointments this week as some of the people you invited to spend your vacation time with you tells you they are unable to go. Even though you are disappointed why not ask some long lost relatives? They may be more than happy to go along with you on your journey home. Keep an ear open to the children to find out what they need to make their universe ideal. Listen to your dreams this week as they could be prophetic; may even tell you when and where the next earthquake will be!

to be as entertainment only as even meditation does not clear them up.

direction so meditate on them for help. The cat is out of the bag as a trusted confident tells your loved one of the big night you spent out on the town with your friends when he/she was away. Don't worry, you are not likely to be the cheating kind and your spouse knows this so when it is laughed off, the friend will be in mild shock. There is nothing you like better than a challenge, unless of course, it is overcoming a problem. You will find a few in the workplace this week where you manage to use that logic you are so famous for to win out. Dreams are cloudy and not too informative, seemingly unrelated to things going on in your life right now. A scorpion may be able to eventually apologize but not before everyone around him or her has been battle scarred or otherwise wounded. Be careful how you verbalize your feelings this week as others will be sensitive but not to your own particular personal problems, and why add loss of friendships to your burden. Things begin to turn around for you by the end of the week and you begin to see some solutions. Your dreams are clear and to the point, quite helpful if you will meditate and listen to them.

Cancer

Libra

Taurus

Gemini

You who have spent a lifetime helping and caring for others find that you are the one in need of help this week but you are not the type that will ask for it. A very intuitive friend sees your problem and puts forth the effort on your behalf that is necessary to solve it. Be very sure that you express your appreciation in terms that are readily understandable and do it with a smile. Your dreams may be a little confusing this week so there is not much need in paying them any mind.

At this late date, the issue of move, not move should be put on the shelf until after the final employment issue is decided; just to be sure the move will not do you in financially. Make preparations for either visitors that will be traveling to see you or, your own travel to see them. Make your decisions now concerning your vacation as time is running out. Your dreams could be prophetic this week and may even be global in nature. Meditate on them and you may just come up with a surprise.

at home. Your dreams can help you on this score as they can give you clues about things to expect and how to react.

Capricorn

This is not a good week for investments of any kind that involve risk taking in all of its forms. Keep informed about the progress of a child to whom you may have more than the usual interest in, especially a handicapped one. Your job is secure so any thought going out and finding another should be dropped, at least until after summer has passed. Your dreams are not really clear this week so don't expect help from that area. The family draws closer together in your time of sorrow and despair, with all the supportive people around you, you are not likely to stay in this depressing state of affairs for very long. A ray of hope and sunshine enters your life in the next few days. Friends may appear to be distant and unfeeling when they are only at a loss to know what to say. Your dreams will help you through this time as they are highly sensitive and prophetic.

Leo

Aquarius

A quarrelsome, disagreeable person may not be simply rude, he or she may have some deep seated personal problems that they cannot talk out and this expresses itself as frustrated anger at the world and not just you in particular. Best to avoid this person for most of the week or until the head is back on straight. Family plans are all important to you this week and you make it a week of family discussions in an effort to please as many of them as you can. Your dreams are not too clear on these points and would appear

Getting acclimated in a new area or on a new job will take some time so don't expect miracles right off the bat. An employee may be having some difficulties at this time and even though you wish to help, you are only able to point this person to the right agencies that address the type of problem he or she may be experiencing. Your dreams may be very clear and concise as they will point to certain areas or aspects of your life that may be causing you some trouble along with ways to overcome.

Scorpio

Pisces

Virgo

Getting a child taken care of, gift wise, has taken you out of the uncertainty of remembering and forgetting at the last minute. This would be a good week to put your spare time to some good use and do some volunteer work with groups who are busily putting together food for the guests from overseas. This is a very satisfying activity and you find that it serves to fill the empty place in your life that you have been feeling. Dreams may also be pointing you in this

Sagittarius

Finishing up projects or chores one at a time in the evening may be the thing that keeps you out of hot water at home. Use your sensitivity and your intuition to help someone this week. Time to clean up your act before the chickens come home to roost and you find yourself in divorce court. Put some spice in your romantic life by adding some romantic touches to the evenings

A very busy week for you as you catch up the loose ends and get ready to prepare for your vacation. Don't let yourself become aggravated with someone this week because in your state of tiredness and nerves you will not be able to control some harsh words that you will both regret. Midweek will find you slowing down a little and your nerves leveling out. Pay close attention to your dreams as they can be counted on to let you know when it is time to put on the brakes in a certain affair.

75 Dead, 459 Injured In China Earthquake

Dubai Rape Case Norwegian Woman 'Free To Go'

14 people still missing after shallow quake in rural Gansu province

A strong earthquake that shook an arid, hilly farming area in northwest China sparked landslides and destroyed or damaged thousands of brick-and-mud homes Monday, killing at least 75 people and injuring more than 450, the government said. The quake near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province toppled brick walls and telephone lines, shattered mud-and-tileroofed houses and sent cascades of dirt and rock down hillsides that blocked roads and slowed rescue efforts by crews trying to reach remote areas. Hospitals set up aid stations in parking lots to accommodate large numbers of injured, while hundreds of paramilitary People's Armed Police fanned out to search for victims in the region of terraced farmland where the quake struck about 1,200 kilometres west of Beijing. I saw the bulb hanging from the ceiling start swinging wildly around. I woke my two friends and we ran into the bathroom to hide," said arts student Li Jingui, 21, who was on the fourth floor of a school dormitory in Dingxi when the shaking started. "After the strongest tremors were over, we were worried that there would be aftershocks so we packed our stuff and ran out into a large clearing," Li said in a telephone interview.

Marte Deborah Dalelv: "It's a very, very good day."

A Norwegian woman at the centre of a Dubai rape case dispute has been pardoned and is free to leave Dubai, she has said. Interior designer Marte Deborah Dalelv, 24, was on a business trip in Dubai when she says she was raped in March. She reported the attack to the police, but was charged with perjury, having extramarital sex and drinking alcohol, receiving a 16-month prison sentence. The case has angered rights groups and the Norwegian authorities. Ms Dalelv has had her passport returned and was free to leave the country, a Norwegian official told the BBC. She was not being deported, and was expected to return to Norway in the next few days. The designer, who has been staying at the Norwegian Seamen's Centre in Dubai since she was sentenced last week, told the BBC she found out she was to be freed earlier on Monday during a meeting with public prosecutors. "We came in and we sat down and they told us 'You've been pardoned'. It's from the ruler of Dubai. It's from him personally so that's - it just feels unbelievable - it's a very, very good day." Her travel documents had now been returned to her and she was preparing to leave Dubai as soon as possible, Ms Dalelv said. In Norway, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tweeted: "Marte is released! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help." The Norwegian government said it had been in daily contact with the Dubai authorities through diplomatic and official channels since Ms Dalelv was sentenced - arguing the jail term represented a human rights violation. Ms Dalelv went public about the sentence last week in a series of interviews. Night out Ms Dalelv says she was on a night out with colleagues on March 6 when the rape took place. She reported it to the police, who proceeded to confiscate her passport and seize her money. She was charged four days later on three counts, including having sex outside marriage. Her alleged attacker, she said, received a 13-month sentence for extramarital sex and alcohol consumption. The man she accused of raping her - a colleague - has also been pardoned, a Norwegian official has said. Despite developing fast as a cosmopolitan tourism destination in recent years, Dubai remains deeply conservative, and its strict laws have caught out foreigners in the past. Public displays of affection and drunkenness are frowned upon.

A man convicted of possessing another man's winning $5 million lottery ticket has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. The prosecutor's office says Andy Ashkar, who is of Palestinian descent, was sentenced Tuesday morning to 8 1/3 to 25 years for having the ticket that was stolen at his parents' convenience store in Syracuse in October 2006.

US Man Gets Maximum For Stolen $5M Lottery Ticket

The same judge who convicted Ashkar in May of criminal possession of stolen property handed down the sentence, citing his "rapacious greed." Prosecutors say Ashkar had stolen the winning scratch-off ticket from the real winner, Robert Miles. Lottery officials say they're close to determining whether the ticket belongs to Miles. Ashkar's brother was cleared of conspiracy charges.

India's School Meals Program Flight's Nose Gear Collapses As It Praised Despite Poisoning Deaths Lands At New York's Laguardia
Ten people were left with minor injuries after a plane's nose wheel collapsed when it landed at New York's LaGuardia Airport, officials say. Six of the casualties were taken to hospital after Southwest Airlines Flight 345 skidded off the runway, said airport general manager Tom Bosco. Emergency vehicles surrounded the Boeing 737 from Nashville, which had 143 passengers and six crew on board. The airport was shut temporarily, but later opened. In an evening news conference, Mr Bosco said the plane's front wheel had collapsed when it landed on runway four at 17:45 (21:45 GMT) on Monday. He said the aircraft skidded on its nose

before coming to rest in a grassy patch about half way down the runway. "We are assessing physical damage to the runway caused by the incident and we hope to have everything open by [Tuesday] morning," Mr Bosco said. The passengers were taken to the main terminal to be reunited with their families, he added. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating. Four people reportedly suffered anxiety attacks, according to the Associated Press news agency. Southwest Airlines said in a statement: "All customers have been deplaned and transferred to the terminal. Southwest is cooperating with local authorities."

While the deaths of 23 children in the northern state of Bihar have raised concerns over the program, even critics agree it deserves credit for helping to raise enrolment and attendance in the country's schools. India's midday meal scheme is the world's most ambitious free school feeding program, providing hot lunch to more than 120 million children in over a million schools across the country. Every school day since the program's launch in 2001, in the early morning rush in Vrindavan town, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, a local kitchen prepares food for 165,000 students. Insulated and dust-free delivery vans ferry 40,000 rotis, lentil curry and rice to over 1,600 schools in the district, part of the what is perhaps the largest intervention against hunger. Sunil Sharma, an administrator overseeing the distribution in a district in north India, says the scale of the project provides a challenge. "It is very big and scattered and we have to manage it in a good manner so that we can provide good-quality and better meals to the students," he said. "This is helpful because in India nutrition is a problem... due to poverty and poor food supply." At a dilapidated government school building, children are hard at work in their classrooms. Almost everyone has come to attend school on empty stomachs. Principal Om Vir Singh says the government school boasts an attendance of more than 100 students from Class 3 to Class 8. "This scheme is a big blessing for children, especially the poor kids who never get to eat a hot and healthy

meal," he said. "They can only concentrate on their studies when they have nutritious food, and for many children this is the only meal they have through the day." After the ritual prayer that normally precedes lunch, the students line up enthusiastically to pick up their plates and sit in neat rows for their sumptuous meal. Rajvati is a year 8 student, whose father is a daily wage labourer. "I think it is good," she said. "For those who come hungry like me, this lunch is a blessing - I love the sweet dish at the end." Another student, Suraj, has been enjoying the scheme for the past four years. "The spices are less in these meals and that makes it tasty," he said. "We never get to eat such food at home and that's why this is a treat. "This meal gives us energy and helps us concentrate." The scheme has also helped in a more modest way in tackling malnutrition. The latest UN Human Development Report states that 47 per cent of Indian children under the age of five are undernourished. Narasimha Dasa, who oversees the network in Uttar Pradesh, says the meal program is making other changes too. "When we started this program in the rural areas, teachers would call the children and segregate the upper and lower-caste students - that used to be the thing," he said. "Over a period of time what we have seen is that all the children sit together - all caste barriers are broken. "This is an intangible yet important contribution of a midday meal scheme served for children at one time."

Doctors at a state-run children's hospital in the European nation of Moldova have been filmed using household tools, including an electric drill and pliers, to perform surgery. The footage, recorded at the hospital in the capital Chisinau and shown repeatedly on local television and leaked online, has prompted outrage among the public and government officials. Prime minister Iurie Leance has ordered healthcare minister Andrei Usatii to investigate the incident. Mr Usatii told local television that while the use of household tools was

allowed in certain circumstances, the hospital in question had adequate specialised equipment. "The hospital had been given three new drilling machines, I don't understand why they had to use a construction drill," he said. Nicolae Starciuc, head physician at the hospital, told local media he suspected disgruntled doctors had leaked the video to discredit him. Moldova, a former Soviet republic of 4 million people, is one of the poorest nations in Europe with an average monthly wage of about $320.

Royal Baby Named Prince George Alexander Louis

Prime Minister David Cameron "It is wonderful news from St Mary's Paddington, and I am sure right across the country and right across the Commonwealth people will be celebrating and wishing the royal couple well. It is an important moment in the life of our nation, but I suppose above all it is an important moment for a warm and loving couple who have got a brand new baby boy. "It has been a remarkable few years for our Royal Family. A Royal wedding that captured peoples' hearts. That extraordinary and magnificent jubilee and now this royal birth, all from a a family that have given this nation so much incredible service. And they can know that a proud nation is celebrating with a very proud and happy couple tonight." Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby "I am delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the arrival of their baby boy. "Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time. May God bless this family with love, health and happiness in their shared life ahead." US President Barack Obama "Michelle and I are so pleased to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child. "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings. The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. "Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince."

Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have named their new son George Alexander Louis, a day after the infant prince had his debut to the world when his mother emerged with him in her arms from St. Mary's Hospital in London. Prince William's wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to a baby boy, Monday, Kensington Palace has announced. The baby was born at 4:24pm London time (1:24am AEST) and weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," the palace said in a statement. People in the UK and around the world react to the news that the Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, who is now third in line to the British throne. Buckingham Palace "The Queen and Prince Philip are delighted at the news of the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby." Duke of Cambridge "We could not be happier." Prince Charles "Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy. "Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.''

In Line To The Throne: Royal Children Worldwide

Here is a list of children in line to thrones around the world. Britain Catherine and William's baby will be third in line to succeed its great grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, the head of state of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms, including Australia and Canada. The baby will follow its grandfather Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and its father Prince William, the eldest child of Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Once all the realms have passed the legislation, male primacy will be brought to an end, backdated to October 2011. Royal family: House of Windsor. Belgium Princess Elisabeth, aged 11, is the heir to the throne. Her father King Philippe - who is married to Princess Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz - became king after his father Albert II abdicated this month. After Philippe's eldest daughter, who could become the first queen of the Belgians, their three other children follow: Gabriel, nine, seven-year-old Emmanuel, and Eleonore, five. The law excluding women from becoming the monarch was repealed in 1991. Royal family: House of Belgium. Denmark Prince Christian, seven, is second in line to the throne after his father, Crown Prince Frederik, the eldest son of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Consort Henrik. He comes before his sister Isabella, six, the third in line to the throne. The law which excluded women from the succession was repealed in 1953. Royal family: House of Oldenburg. Japan Prince Hisahito, six, the only son of Prince Akishino (the younger brother of Crown Prince Naruhito), is third in line to the throne after his uncle and father, the children of Emperor Akihito. Aiko, Princess Toshi, the 12-year-old only child of Naruhito and his wife Michiko, is not in line to inherit the throne, as females were excluded in 1889. Royal family: Yamato Dynasty Morocco Prince Moulay Hassan, 10, the son of King Mohammed VI and Princess Lalla Salma, is the kingdom's crown prince. He has a sister, six-year-old Lalla Khadija, who is ruled out of the succession as a girl. Royal family: Alawi Dynasty The Netherlands Princess Catharina-Amalia, nine, the oldest child of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, is first in line to the throne. She is followed by her sisters Alexia, eight, and Ariane, six. Under a 1983 law the eldest son or daughter becomes heir. Royal family: House of OrangeNassau. Norway Princess Ingrid Alexandra, nine, the first daughter of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is second in line to the throne. She is followed by her seven-year-old brother Sverre Magnus. Since 1990, the eldest child assumes succession, whether a boy or a girl. Royal family: House of Oldenburg. Spain Seven-year-old Leonor de Borbon, is second in line to succeed King Juan Carlos of Spain, after her father, Crown Prince Felipe. The Spanish constitution currently allows a female heir to the throne only if she has no brothers. If she does not have a brother, Leonor could become the first female Spanish head of state since Isabelle II (1833-1868). Her six-year-old sister Sofia is third in line to the throne. Royal family: House of Bourbon. Sweden Princess Estelle, the daughter of Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, who is 17 months old on Tuesday, is second in line to the throne, after her mother, the daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf. New Zealand Earthquake Damages Wellington Parliament

A minute-long earthquake has shaken New Zealand, halting trains and damaging Wellington's parliament building. The 6.5-magnitude tremor was centered 35 miles (57 km) off the coast south of the capital at a depth of 6.3 miles, said the US Geological Survey. But while some structural damage and power cuts were reported, officials said there was no risk of a tsunami. The quake hit at 17:09 (05:09 GMT) and was felt as far north as Auckland. It smashed windows, knocked stock off shop shelves and burst some water pipes, but there have been no reports of serious casualties. Wellington resident James Mclaren said the earthquake had caused power cuts in the city suburbs and prompted the temporary closure of its airport.

Paleontologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a 72-millionyear-old dinosaur tail in a desert in northern Mexico. Apart from being unusually well preserved, the five-meter tail was the first found in Mexico, National Institute for Anthropology and History (INAH) director Francisco Aguilar said in the border state of Coahuila. The dig team, made up of paleontologists

and students from INAH and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), identified the fossil as a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur. The tail, found near the small town of General Cepeda, likely made up half the dinosaur's length, Mr Aguilar said. Paleontologists found the 50 vertebrae of the tail completely intact after spending 20 days in the desert slowly lifting a sedimentary rock covering the creature's bones. Strewn around the tail were other fossilized bones, including one of the dinosaur's hips, INAH said. Dinosaur tail finds are relatively rare, according to INAH. The discovery could further the understanding of the hadrosaur family and aid research on diseases that afflicted dinosaur bones, which resembled those of humans, Mr Aguilar said. Scientists, for example, have already determined that dinosaurs suffered from tumours and arthritis. Dinosaur remains have been found in many parts of the state of Coahuila in addition to Mexico's other northern

"There's been a bit of structural damage, lots of shattered glass everywhere," he told the BBC. "Initially there were a few screams and panic, people thought it was another Christchurch." A 6.3-magnitude earthquake centered near Christchurch in February 2011 killed 185 people. Sunday's tremor was the latest in a series that have shaken the lower half of New Zealand's North Island in recent days. New Zealand lies on the notorious Ring of Fire, the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim. The country experiences more than 14,000 earthquakes a year, of which only around 20 have a magnitude in excess of 5.0.

Migrants and temporary visa holders have been warned to be wary of scammers who say they must pay money or they will be deported from Australia. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Immigration Department say scammers impersonating government officials are calling migrants. The scammers are claiming there a problem with a fictitious number, which they are calling the "citizenship and immigration services alien" (CISA) number. The victim is told to pay an up-front fee of about $900 in cash or through a bank wire service, or risk being deported. ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard says there has been 60 reports of the scam so far this year. "This is a really nasty scam that plays upon the vulnerabilities and fears of migrants and people who are here on temporary visas," she said. "Basically someone contacts them out of the blue and claims there's something wrong with their visa which could lead to them being deported. "The current variation that's happening is they're saying there's a problem with their citizenship and immigration service alien number or card - this is a number or card that doesn't exist." Ms Rickard says the scammers are collecting personal data through websites and social networking forums. "There are all sorts of ways that ID theft and ID fraud is happening these days," she said. "But basically social media, the internet, it's actually quite easy to get

access to people's personal data, a name and address, a birth date - enough to convince the person that you might be a government department, that you do know something about them. "And that adds to their air of legitimacy." Ms Rickard says the actual number of people who have been scammed in this manner is likely to be far higher than the 60 that has been reported. "I'm sure it's language and communication issues, it's a lack of familiarity with who the correct government departments are here," she said. "People should know that all visa issues in Australia will be dealt with through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, these scammers use a whole range of different names when they're trying to scam people." A Department of Immigration and Citizenship spokesman said it was a well-organised ruse to con migrants into transferring an "unpaid government fee", when the purported CISA number does not exist. "Immigration has received information from a number of clients who have been approached for their CISA number, demanding that a fee is paid and threatening deportation if it is not," the spokesman said. "The Australian Government will never call you to demand a payment in relation to your visa so if you receive this call, hang up." DIAC and the ACCC say it is important to report such incidents to the relevant state or territory police and to the Immigration Dob-In Line on 1800 009 623.

desert states. "We have a very rich history of palaeontology," Mr Aguilar said. He noted that during the cretaceous period, which ended about 65 million years ago, much of what is now central northern Mexico was on the coast. This has enabled researchers to unearth remains of both marine and land-based dinosaurs. The presence of the remains was reported to INAH by locals in June last year, and after initial inspections excavation began earlier this month. The remains of the tail will be transferred to General Cepeda for cleaning and further investigation.

There are numerous advantages to holding Canadian citizenship. Becoming a Canadian citizen comes with benefits that are not available to permanent residents, such as: access to restricted jobs; the right to vote and run for political office; and the ability to travel with a Canadian passport. Canadian citizens also have the security of holding a status that is not easy to lose or relinquish. Canadian Citizens Are Eligible for More Jobs Canadian citizens are eligible for certain unelected government jobs that require citizenship as well as jobs requiring security clearances. Permanent residents, on the other hand, may find themselves with employment choices that are limited by their status.

Canadian Citizens Can Vote and Run for Political Office With Canadian citizenship comes the right to vote in provincial and national elections. By voting, Canadian citizens play an important role in influencing provincial and federal politics. In addition, Canadian citizens may hold political office, and represent Canadian constituents on issues like taxes, education, and foreign policy. Canadian Citizens Can Travel on a Canadian Passport For many naturalized citizens, a Canadian passport is a more useful passport than a passport issued by the country of birth, since many countries allow Canadians to enter without a visa for certain approved purposes. Canada recognizes dual citizenship, so if your country of birth also

Benefits Of Canadian Citizenship

recognizes dual citizenship, then you may find yourself in the privileged position of holding two passports. If your home country does not permit dual citizenship, then you may want to take some time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of travel documents issued by both Canada and your home country. Canadian Citizens Never Have to Worry About Losing Status Unlike permanent residents, who must comply with certain residency requirements, Canadians citizens can spend as much time as they like outside of Canada with no immigration consequences. In addition, Canadian citizens will not ordinarily lose citizenship if convicted of a crime, while permanent residents will face deportation if the crime is

considered serious enough to merit this consequence. Canadian Citizens Don't Need to Renew Their Immigration Documentation Permanent Resident Cards are valid for only five years. The cards are required for international travel and may be requested as proof of permanent resident status by employers or other government agencies. Therefore, permanent residents are in the unenviable position of needing to file a new application for a Permanent Resident Card, and pay a new fee, every five years. Citizens have no similar obligation. A Citizenship Certificate is valid indefinitely and Canadian citizens who wish to travel internationally need only renew their passports every ten years.

B.C. Teacher Disciplined For Swearing, Sexual Jokes

Some bottles of Molson Canadian Cider are being recalled because they may contain fragments of glass. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says the bottles, in the 341 millilitre size, are sold in Ontario and Nova Scotia. The agency says there are no reported injuries linked to the affected beverage.

Some Molson Canadian Cider Recalled Due To Glass Fragments

The distributor, Toronto-based Molson Coors Canada, is voluntarily recalling the product and the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall. The affected cider is sold in individual bottles with a UPC code of 0-5632700866-3 and in a six-pack with a UPC code of 0-56327-00824-3.

B.C.s Teacher Regulation Branch has published its latest set of disciplinary decisions including the case of a Dease Lake teacher who used profanity and showed inappropriate movies in class. According to the disciplinary decision posted on the branchs website, K-12 teacher David Ringlever agreed to resign from the Stikine school district in 2011 following a review. The Teacher Regulation Branch says Ringlever made inappropriate sexual jokes in class, often in an attempt to address homophobic comments and attitudes expressed by students. Ringlever also used profanity on occasion, and several times showed inappropriate movies like the Trailer Park Boys, which is rated 18A. The branch says Ringlever failed to set appropriate professional boundaries, allowing students to come to his home

to watch movies and use his computer. He didn't teach major portions of the curriculum or adequately plan lessons, and left students unsupervised in the classroom. Ringlever also instructed elementary school students to play a game he called "tap out, which had no rules and encouraged students to hold, squeeze, trip, or twist another child into submission until they tapped out. According to the disciplinary decision, district staff tried to help Ringlever implement effective teaching practices several times between September 2009 and June 2010, but Ringlever and the district staff had conflicting views on how to handle his students. Ringlever resigned from the district on Sept. 6, 2011. Its not clear if he is teaching elsewhere.

Scammers Using Name Of Surrey Lottery Winner

Some paramedics in BC say theyre not getting paid since a new payroll system was put into place last month. Bronwyn Barter with The Ambulance Paramedics of British Columbia says The BC Ambulance Service integrated the payroll and scheduling system with the Provincial Health Services Authority on June 21st. She says shift work and usual pay issues has made it difficult to enter payroll information into the new system. The calculations were wrong, the input was wrong, and they werent familiar with our collective agreement. We have very different schedules as paramedics with shift work, different idiosyncrasies with our pay and with our job. With the transition into Provincial Health Services Authority

payroll, our idiosyncrasies and our different pay issues didnt fit into the system, she explains. Barter says theyve met with the employer but it doesnt appear they have a process in place to fix it. Thats become even more frustrating. A lot of these things you think they have recognized the problem and will fix it, thats not whats happening. Weve basically been told this could carry on until the end of August. During this time we have people that have mortgage payments, issues with creditors and banks because things are being bounced. She says theyre looking at all their options, including legal. Barter says the majority of BCs 3,700 paramedics are having issues with their pay.

A Surrey man who recently won two lotteries is having his name used as part of an international scam. In April, Harry Black, 66, won Lotto 649 with two winning tickets worth a total of $31.7 million. The part-time film industry worker and self-proclaimed workaholic said he wouldn't quit his job, but would likely take a holiday, which he's never done. Now his name is being used to chisel people out of their hard-earned savings. Virginia resident Michelle Gantzer told the reporter that she was emailed by a man who claimed to represent Black. Gantzer was told Black had picked a handful of lucky strangers to share his fortune with. She was told she was chosen to receive $2 million, as long as she donated some of the money. Of course I thought it was a scam, but

my curiosity was up so I went along with it, Gantzer said. She played along until he asked her for her social security number or a cash deposit. Then she was asked to provide a $450 deposit to open up an account for her $2 million. She declined. The Better Business Bureau says the scam is particularly clever because it uses the real name of a real lottery winner and an actual bank in the United Kingdom. BBB spokesman Mark Fernandes said advance-fee scammers were still using the couples name as recently as March. Anyone who believes theyre being targeted by scammers is advised to contact the Better Business Bureau and police.

Former RCMP officer Keith Wiens has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his common-law wife, Lynn Kalmring two years ago. The jury delivered their verdict to B.C. Supreme Court Justice Geoff Barrow on Tuesday night, after only six hours of deliberations. Wiens was charged after police found the body of 55-year-old Kalmring in the couple's Penticton home in 2011. Police say she had been shot in the face. During the trial, Wiens sat quietly, staring straight ahead, as a crown lawyer told the jury Wiens deliberately

Wiens pleaded not guilty, his lawyer insisting Wiens did shoot Kalmring in self-defence. He painted a picture of a woman, hysterical over the fear her husband was going to leave her. The defence said Kalmring wanted to kill herself, but only after she had ended Wiens' life with the knife. Wiens spent 20 years with the RCMP in Summerland.

A Kamloops nursing student has been fined $1,500 for leaving her puppy in a sweltering car for hours while she was in the West Edmonton Mall. Nineteen-year-old Brittany Wiebe pleaded guilty in Edmonton provincial court to one count of causing an animal to be in distress. Crown prosecutor Christian Lim says security staff noticed the puppy, named Franklin, in obvious distress locked

away in the vehicle. As temperatures reached 33 degrees outside that day last August, Wiebe was inside with friends at the malls water park. Wiebes lawyer says his clients actions werent malicious, but she didnt understand the dangers, and the judge agreed. The woman has also been banned from owning animals for 10 years but is allowed to keep Franklin.

Lululemon Says See-Through Pants Being Worn Too Small

Retailer Lululemon Athletica Inc. says customers could still be sporting see-through Luon yoga pants because they're buying sizes that are too small for them. The Vancouver-based company said Wednesday there are still "a few negative comments" circulating on the Internet from shoppers who it believes are buying the wrong size. The problem may be that "guests don't have the benefit of doing an in-store fit session with one of our educators to make sure the fit is right for them," the company said in a Frequently Asked Questions section of its website. "The majority of feedback about the return of our black luon bottoms has been positive," it noted. Lululemon says it has made "big changes" to its product development process since the see-through pants first grabbed attention in March. But the troubles persist, and that might begin to cause problems for Lululemon's reputation, said Macquarie Capital analyst Liz Dunn who is a self-proclaimed "heavy user" of the company's products. "We see a narrow window of opportunity for Lululemon to really fix quality," she said in a note. "Otherwise, customers may jump ship to competing brands." Dunn said she's concerned with Lululemon's decision to tell customers to buy bigger sizes or that certain clothes aren't made for sweating in while others aren't made for running. She said not only does that create confusion but it also makes it inconvenient for customers who hurry from one exercise class to the next in the same pants. "We believe consumers expect to be able to both bend and sweat in Lululemon's premium-priced athletic product," she said. Dunn also pointed out that clothes once manufactured in Canada have now been outsourced to Asia to boost product margins. She acknowledged that customers may be paying more attention to product quality after hearing about the recall earlier this year. Reviews on Lululemon's website have pointed out some of the flaws with the company's relaunch of its Luon pants. "I was told by a sales associate that after the fabric was changed, most people had to go up a size for the sheerness to go away," wrote DCRunner16. "Confused that just one size smaller would cause so much trouble with the fabric, I tried an eight. The eight was not only too big, but still sheer when I bent over!" Numerous other reviews on the website outlined similar experiences with the pants. "Did some bend-over tests and you could see my underwear and the tag on the pants," wrote a user called ILoveSun. However not all of the recent reviews were negative and some customers questioned why so many others were still claiming their pants were seethrough. The quality of the Luon fabric has become a significant problem in recent months, resulting in several lawsuits accusing the company of disclosure shortcomings that artificially inflated the stock price of the company. Lululemon pulled its black Luon pants from stores mid-March, which meant removing 17 per cent of its woman's pants inventory. Since then, the company has said that the fabric used in the pants did not meet their standards. In April, chief product officer Sheree Waterson left the company. The company then said it began testing and assessing all Luon products to ensure they meet "revised specifications for modulus (stretch), weight and tolerances." It has also stationed employees at factories to ensure that the new standards were being met. Last month, Lululemon chief executive Christine Day announced her plans to leave the company once a successor was found. The company also recently delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange. Shares of the company were 15 cents lower at $65.54 in after-hours trading on the New York Stock Exchange, as of 5:53 p.m. ET. The company's stock ended 24 cents higher to $65.69 in the regular trading session.

Coho Ferry Crashes Into Victoria Seaplane Dock

There were no injuries, and no boats or planes were damaged
Investigators are trying to determine why the Coho Ferry collided with a float plane dock in Victoria's Inner Harbour Wednesday night. The ferry, which crosses the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Victoria and Port Angeles, Wash., crushed the dock as it backed out of its berth in front of the Regent Hotel around 7:30 p.m. PT Wednesday night. Ryan Burles, the president of Black Ball Ferries, the company that runs the MV Coho, says it was unsafe to stop in the harbour, so the ferry continued on to Port Angeles. Burles said the Coho Ferry captain is a 15-year veteran and the crew is very experienced. "We've done this a lot obviously. We have a veteran crew, there was nobody new," he said. "The vessel did not respond when it should have and that's the issue at this stage. Transport Canada, Harbour Control is there. We've contacted the U.S. Coast Guard." Reports say it was windy at the time of the incident. There were no injuries and no boats or planes were damaged, but the seaplane dock is now shattered and floating upside down. The 104-metre MV Coho, meanwhile, continues to chug in and out of the busy port today and has maintained its four scheduled crossings of the strait.

Continued From Last Week If your child tells you about a bully, focus on offering comfort and support, no matter how upset you are. Kids are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying because they feel embarrassed and ashamed that it's happening, or worry that their parents will be disappointed. Sometimes kids feel like it's their own fault, that if they looked or acted differently it wouldn't be happening. Sometimes they're scared that if the bully finds out that they told, it will get worse. Others are worried that their parents won't believe them or do anything about it. Or kids worry that their parents will urge them to fight back when they're scared to. Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it. Remind your child that he or she isn't alone a lot of people get bullied at some point. Emphasize that it's the bully who is behaving badly not your child. Reassure your child that you will figure out what to do about it together. Sometimes an older sibling or friend can help deal with the situation. It may help your daughter to hear how the older sister she idolizes was teased about her braces and how she dealt with it. An older sibling or friend also might be able to give you some perspective on what's happening at school, or wherever the bullying is happening, and help you figure out the best solution. Take it seriously if your hear that the bullying will get worse if the bully finds out that your child told. Sometimes it's useful to approach the bully's parents. In other cases, teachers or counselors are the best ones to contact first. If you've tried those methods and still want to speak to the bullying child's parents, it's best to do so in a context where a school official, such as a counselor, can mediate. Many provinces have bullying laws and policies. Find out about the laws in your community. In certain cases, if you have serious concerns about your child's safety, you may need to contact legal authorities.

Helping Kids

Advice for Kids

The key to helping kids is providing strategies that deal with bullying on an everyday basis and also help restore their self-esteem and regain a sense of dignity. It may be tempting to tell a kid to fight back. After all, you're angry that your child is suffering and maybe you were told to "stand up for yourself" when you were young. And you may worry that your child will continue to suffer at the hands of the bully. But it's important to advise kids not to respond to bullying by fighting or bullying back. It can quickly escalate into violence, trouble, and someone

getting injured. Instead, it's best to walk away from the situation, hang out with others, and tell an adult. Here are some other strategies to discuss with kids that can help improve the situation and make them feel better: Avoid the bully and use the buddy system. Use a different bathroom if a bully is nearby and don't go to your locker when there is nobody around. Make sure you have someone with you so that you're not alone with the bully. Buddy up with a friend on the bus, in the hallways, or at recess wherever the bully is. Offer to do the same for a friend. Hold the anger. It's natural to get upset by the bully, but that's what bullies thrive on. It makes them feel more powerful. Practice not reacting by crying or looking red or upset. It takes a lot of practice, but it's a useful skill for keeping off of a bully's radar. Sometimes kids find it useful to practice "cool down" strategies such as counting to 10, writing down their angry words, taking deep breaths or walking away. Sometimes the best thing to do is to teach kids to wear a "poker face" until they are clear of any danger (smiling or laughing may provoke the bully). Act brave, walk away, and ignore the bully. Firmly and clearly tell the bully to stop, then walk away. Practice ways to ignore the hurtful remarks, like acting uninterested or texting someone on your cell phone. By ignoring the bully, you're showing that you don't care. Eventually, the bully will probably get bored with trying to bother you. Tell an adult. Teachers, principals, parents, and lunchroom personnel at school can all help stop bullying Talk about it. Talk to someone you trust, such as a guidance counselor, teacher, sibling, or friend. They may offer some helpful suggestions, and even if they can't fix the situation, it may help you feel a little less alone. Remove the incentives. If the bully is demanding your lunch money, start bringing your lunch. If he's trying to get your music player, don't bring it to school.

Reaching Out

At home you can lessen the impact of the bullying. Encourage your kids to get together with friends that help build their confidence. Help them meet other kids by joining clubs or sports programs. And find activities that can help a child feel confident and strong. Maybe it's a self-defense class like karate or a movement or other gym class. And just remember: as upsetting as bullying can be for you and your family, lots of people and resources are available to help

Drinking excessive amounts of cola and eating honey made from the pollen of Rhododendrons can cause unusual syncope (fainting) and symptoms of arrhythmia, a new study has found. The findings were reported in two case studies presented as abstracts at the EHRA EUROPACE 2013 meeting, in Athens. "Both these studies underline the importance of clinicians taking detailed medical histories for patients with unexplained arrhythmias and including questions about their dietary intakes," Professor Andreas Goette, the EHRA Scientific Programme Committee chairperson, said. In the first abstract Dr. Naima Zarqane and Prof. Nadir Saoudi, from the Princess Grace Hospital Centre, Monaco, reported how excessive consumption of cola drinks can result in marked potassium loss (hypokalemia), QT prolongation on ECGs and potentially life threatening arrhythmias. In the abstract the team describe the case of a 31 year old woman admitted to hospital for traumatic syncope. Once other problems had been excluded (including a family history of sudden death, digestive symptoms, and metabolic or hormonal abnormalities), tests revealed the patient had blood potassium levels of 2.4 mmol/L, and a QTc (The QT interval on the ECG corrected for heart rate) of 610 ms. Normal blood potassium levels range between 3.5 to 5.1 mmol/L; while the normal QTc for women is less than or equal to 450 ms.

Excessive Consumption Of Cola Or Red Wine Compound Counteracts Honey Can Cause Unusual Fainting Exercise Benefits In Older Men
In the second abstract Dr. Ugur Turk, from Central Hospital, Izmir, Turkey, reported on the cases of a 68 year old father and 27 year old son who were both admitted to the Izmir emergency department at the same time with symptoms of vomiting and dizziness. Surface ECGs revealed both patients to have complete atrioventricular block and atrial flutter with slow ventricular responses. When a history was taken both father and son reported that their breakfasts over the past three mornings had included high amounts of honey from the Black sea region of Turkey. This information immediately triggered Turk and colleagues to consider that their patients could be suffering from `mad honey poisoning`. Mad honey poisoning occurs after people consume honey contaminated with grayanotoxin, a chemical contained in nectar from the Rhododendron species ponticum and luteum. Grayanotoxin is a neurotoxin that binds to the sodium channels in the cell membrane, maintaining them in an open state and prolonging depolarisation. Mad honey poisoning generally lasts no more than 24 hours, with symptoms of the mild form including dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, excessive perspiration, hypersalivation and paraesthesia. Symptoms of the more severe form include syncope, seizures, complete atrioventricular block and even fatal tachy arrhythmia s (due to oscillatory after potentials). A natural antioxidant compound found in red grapes and other plants - called resveratrol - blocks many cardiovascular benefits of exercise in older men, new research has suggested. Resveratrol has received widespread attention as a possible anti-aging compound and is now widely available as a dietary supplement; much has been made of its role in explaining the cardiovascular health benefits of red wine, and other foods. But now, new research at The University of Copenhagen surprisingly suggests that eating a diet rich in antioxidants may actually counteract many of the health benefits of exercise, including reduced blood pressure and cholesterol. In contrast to earlier studies in animals in which resveratrol improved the cardiovascular benefits of exercise, this study in humans has provided surprising and strong evidence that in older men, resveratrol has the opposite effect. Lasse Gliemann, a PhD student who worked on the study at The University of Copenhagen, said that they studied

27 healthy, physically inactive men around 65 years old for 8 weeks. He said that during the 8 weeks all of the men performed high-intensity exercise training and half of the group received 250 mg of resveratrol daily, whereas the other group received a placebo pill. The study design was double-blinded, thus neither the subjects nor the investigators knew which participant that received either resveratrol or placebo. He asserted that they found that exercise training was highly effective in improving cardiovascular health parameters, but resveratrol supplementation attenuated the positive effects of training on several parameters including blood pressure, plasma lipid concentrations and maximal oxygen uptake. Ylva Hellsten, the leader of the project, said that they were surprised to find that resveratrol supplementation in aged men blunted the positive effects of exercise training on cardiovascular health parameters, in part because our results contradict findings in animal studies.

Clear Earwax To Protect Ears

Heading out of town for some leisure time? Before travelling in a flight or taking a dip in water, make sure you clean your ears to avoid any kind of damage. "Ear wax absorbs water and then expands, causing a blockage and hearing problems," femalefirst.co.uk quoted Mary Kelly from the Clear Ear Clinic as saying. "We see a lot of patients who jump into the pool on the first day of their holiday, which washes ear wax deep into the ear canal, and they then end up spending the rest of their precious holiday deaf or looking for a way or a person to remove the earwax," she added. Ear wax specialist Kelly is part of a team, which removes more than 100 liters of ear wax every year. Here are few tips from her to keep your ears safe: - Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears. This includes hair pins, pens, and pen tips. They may temporarily relieve the irritation, but they push the ear wax further into your ears. - During flight, if you suffer from ear pain and you know your ears are clear of wax, try ear planes' earplugs, which slow down the change in air pressure on ascent and landing. - We can comfortably manage with our ears 95 percent full of ear wax, but once it's more than this, the problem arises. If you have regular ear wax build up, consult a doctor and have the earwax removed, before going on holiday. - For earwax removal, try microsuction. Derived from ear surgery, it uses a binocular operating microscope to see right into the ear canal and a very fine sterile suction device at low pressure to remove the wax. - Use ear drops. If nothing is available in vicinity, try to unblock ears with ear drops such as olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops. But stay away ear drops containing hydrogen peroxide. They can damage your ears. - Use soft towel to dry the outer part of your ear. The inside will dry on its own. Never use a hair dryer, as this may burn your ear. - If you're going to a night club where loud music is being played, wear protection.

How To Get Kids To Eat Veggies

Teaching kids about food and its nutrients encourages children to understand why eating a variety of foods is ideal and also drives them to eat more vegetables by choice, a new research has suggested. Psychological scientists Sarah Gripshover and Ellen Markman of Stanford University hypothesized that preschoolers would be capable of understanding a more conceptual approach to nutrition, despite their young age. They explained that kids have natural curiosity - they want to understand why and how things work. The scientists said that they need to simplify materials for kids, but oversimplification robs them of the opportunity to learn and advance their thinking. Gripshover and Markman developed five storybooks aimed at revising and elaborating on what children already know about different nutrition-related themes, including dietary variety, digestion, food categories, microscopic nutrients, and nutrients as fuel for biological functions. The researchers assigned some preschool classrooms to read nutrition books during snack time for about 3 months, while other classrooms were assigned to conduct snack time as usual. Later, the preschoolers were asked questions about nutrition. The children who had been read the nutrition books were more likely to understand that food had nutrients, and that different kinds of nutrients were important for various bodily functions. They were also more knowledgeable about digestive processes, understanding, for example, that the stomach breaks down food and blood carries nutrients. These children also more than doubled their voluntary intake of vegetables during snack time after the three-month intervention, whereas the amount that the control group ate stayed about the same.

A new study suggests that it is not about how much you bite off, but how much you chew, to retain more energy from the food that we consume. "Particle size has bioaccessibility of the energy of the food that is being consumed," Dr. Richard Mattes (CQ), professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, said. "The more you chew, the less is lost and more is retained in the body," he

The study found with fewer chews, the larger particles were eliminated by the body. With more chews, the smaller particles were more readily absorbed into the system.

Fitter and healthier men are at lower risks of losing the ability to achieve erection, a new study has revealed. According to new research, which shows sex, drugs and rock and roll is an oxymoron, though men will start experiencing erectile dysfunction as they get older, following a healthy lifestyle can lower the risk, as reported. Researchers have revealed that the likelihood of erectile dysfunction increases by 11.3 per cent every year once men hit the age of 45, but smoking, heavy drinking, sedentary lifestyle and conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and depression dramatically

increase the risk. Associate Professor David Smith from Cancer Council NSW said that currently heavy smokers are 86 per cent more likely to have erectile problems than other men and being obese doubles the risk. The researchers used data on 101,674 men with no previous diagnosis of prostate cancer from the '45 and Up Study'. They found 39.3 per cent reported no dysfunction, while 25 per cent had mild issues, 19 per cent had moderate issues and 17 per cent had complete dysfunction.

15-Minute Walk After Meals Could Help Cut Type 2 Diabetes Risk
A fifteen minute walk after each meal may help older people regulate blood sugar levels and could reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a new study has claimed. The study by researchers at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS), found that three short post-meal walks were as effective at reducing blood sugar over 24 hours as a 45-minute walk of the same easy-tomoderate pace. Moreover, post-meal walking was significantly more effective than a sustained walk at lowering blood sugar for up to three hours following the evening meal. Lead study author Loretta DiPietro, PhD, MPH, chair of the SPHHS Department of Exercise Science, said that these findings are good news for people in their 70s and 80s who may feel more capable of engaging in intermittent physical activity on a daily basis, especially if the short walks can be combined with running errands or walking the dog. She said that the muscle contractions connected with short walks were immediately effective in blunting the potentially damaging elevations in post-meal blood sugar commonly observed in older people. DiPietro and her colleagues recruited ten people age 60 and older who were otherwise healthy but at risk of developing type 2 diabetes due to higher-than-normal levels of fasting blood sugar and to insufficient levels of physical activity. Participants completed three randomlyordered exercise protocols spaced four weeks apart. Each protocol comprised a 48-hour stay in a whole-room calorimeter, with the first day serving as a control period. On the second day, participants engaged in either post-meal walking for 15 minutes after each meal or 45 minutes of sustained walking performed at 10:30 in the morning or at 4:30 in the afternoon. DiPietro said that the team observed that the most effective time to go for a post-meal walk was after the evening meal. The exaggerated rise in blood sugar after this meal-often the largest of the day-often lasts well into the night and early morning and this was curbed significantly as soon as the participants started to walk on the treadmill.

Not many know that sweet and tangy, red coloured, tiny seasonal fruit cherry contains plenty of health benefits. Experts say cherry not only helps reduce blood uric-acid levels, but also cures muscle pain. It also slows down the process of ageing and reduces skin problems like acne and vulgaris. Health benefits of the fruit: 1. Aid muscle recovery: According to a research, cherries contain antiinflammatory properties, which help reduce muscle pain, following rigorous exercise. A study by the Oregon Health and Science University in America also showed that athletes who drank cherry juice before a long-distance relay, experienced less muscle pain after the race than those who drank another fruit drink. 2. Help you sleep: Cherries contain melatonin, a chemical our brain needs to regulate sleep, aid with jet lag, prevent memory loss and delay the ageing process. Scientists at the Northumbria University in Britain revealed that volunteers who drank cherry juice received a significant boost to their levels of melatonin. 3: Reduce gout: Cherry juice helps reduce blood uric-acid levels and gout pain. The chemicals called anthocyanins in cherries reduce inflammation to ease joint pain as well as the effects of

osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Research by the Human Nutrition Research Center at the University of California showed that women who consumed 280 grams of tart cherries showed an overnight 15 percent reduction in uric acid levels. 4: Good skin: Scientists from the Michigan State University in the US say that drinking just one glass of tart cherry juice every day slows down the ageing process. They have discovered that cherry has the highest antioxidant level of any fruit with 17 different antioxidant compounds present. Antioxidants help the body fight free radicals, which make us look old. Cherry juice is also recommended as an alternative treatment for other skin conditions including acne, rosacea and vulgaris. The juice is rich in vitamin A and its antibacterial properties remove toxins from the blood and fight bacteria trapped under the skin. 5: A useful diuretic: Cherries are an extremely effective diuretic. Cherries have a reasonable potassium content and virtually no sodium. 6: Sex booster: Cherry juice contains vitamins A and C, which boost libido in men and women. Vitamin A increases testosterone and oestrogen levels, while vitamin C boosts sexual appetite and increases men's semen volume.

"If this film does well then I'll definitely strip for my fans as disappointing anybody is not in my nature," the model told a newspaper. Poonam Pandeys bare poster has irked the people of Mahim area in Mumbai. A group of protesters pull out her poster and tore it into pieces and put fire. This incident took place just a day after the residents of Seemapuri in northwest Delhi burned the posters of the bold film. Reacting to the incident, Poonam said that she is ready to apologize if her fans annoyed with her in any ways. Nasha is about love and sex between 25 year-old girl and a 18-year-old teenage boy. The movie will also see Poonam Pandey doing pole dance. Poonam is feeling nervous as only few days left for her debut film release. Tweethearts! Yaar Tenssion aa gaya ...

Bollywood star Salman Khan has been charged with culpable homicide by a court in the Indian city of Mumbai for a hit-and-run incident 10 years ago. The actor pleaded not guilty - if convicted, he faces 10 years in prison. The trial will begin on August 19. In September 2002, he allegedly drove his car into a bakery in Mumbai, killing a man sleeping on the street. So far, he has been tried for the lesser offence of "death caused by negligence". Khan is one of Bollywood's biggest stars and has starred in more than 80 Hindi-language films, including Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aap Ke Hain Kaun. Late on the night of September 28, 2002, Khan's Toyota Land Cruiser rammed into the American Express bakery in the Bandra area of Mumbai, authorities say. The vehicle ran over five people sleeping on the streets, killing 38-yearold Noor Ullah Khan and seriously injuring three others. Another person received minor injuries. Trial delays On Wednesday, the actor appeared before the sessions court, dressed in a grey shirt and black trousers. The judge exempted the actor from being present in court during the trial, although he will have to appear if

asked to. Khan was initially charged with culpable homicide. But he successfully challenged that charge in court and it was reduced to "causing death by negligence". The trial finally began at the Bandra Magistrate Court in 2006. The court heard several witnesses between 2006 and 2011 but in March 2011 the prosecution asked for the more serious charge to be reinstated. In February this year, the court ruled that the actor could be tried for the more serious charge of "culpable homicide not amounting to murder". Khan challenged the ruling in the Bombay High Court, which rejected his petition last month. There have been several complaints about delays to the trial - the case has stretched on for more than a decade. Mumbai police deny causing deliberate delays. Correspondents say it is not unusual in India for cases to go on for many years, even decades, and there have long been complaints about the laborious nature and slow pace of the country's judicial system. Khan is a hugely popular and successful actor. He has often been described as a "bad boy" heart-throb. In 2006, he was sentenced to five years in prison for hunting a protected deer, but he was released on bail after spending less than a week in jail.

couldnt sleep Last night. .. Just just 3 days to go 26th July, Poonam shared her anxiety with her fans on Twitter. Speaking about the story of Nasha, Poonam Pandey said: The movies story is about an 18-year-old boy and a 25-year-old woman. The boy falls in love with the woman and crosses all his limits, that is the story. It is something new and something fresh to watch. When Poonam Pandey was asked if she would like to work in a Tollywood film, she replied: If there is a script that suits me, I will act in Telugu films. Directed by Amit Saxena of Jism fame, Nasha promises high dose of sex and emotions. The trailer of the film was a hit and Poonams fans liked her in bare-dare role. Poonam said that her film has a strong content and it does not carry only skin shows. Poonam added that she hated as people were comparing her to Sunny Leone, the Indian-Canadian porn starturned-Bollywood actress. She said her debut movie 'Nasha' has dialogues instead of "just ooh-aah".

Ekta Kapoor Observes Rozas For Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara

It is a known fact that Ekta Kapoor visits the Balaji shrine in South India or Ajmer Sharief before her film releases,

to pray. In the years gone by, she has also observed a roza (fast) during Ramadan. While every year she fasts for one day, this time she is keeping multiple rozas. As the keenly awaited Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara is up for a release on August 15, Kapoor is fasting on all the important days during Ramadan. She even plans to visit Mumbai's Mohamed Ali Road to celebrate iftaari and feed the poor. She has been observing rozas strictly, despite her hectic schedule, and every evening breaks the fast in her office with juice and dinner.

Big B has apparently requested the makers of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' to reduce the episodes of the upcoming season as well as change the venue.

'KBC' To Have Lesser Episodes This Season?

Luxury Of Films Not Available For TV Actors

He might be one of the busiest actors around but he, too, takes caution when needed. As per Amitabh Bachchan's request, the upcoming season of Kaun Banega Crorepati will have limited episodes and will be shot in Yash Raj Studios instead of Film City. A unit hand says, `Last year it was hectic for Big B as well as for the crew as two episodes had to be shot in a day. This time around, he has asked us to slow down because of his health.` After his stomach surgery last year and early this year, Bachchan has not taken up too much work. He's keeping a check on his health as he recently complained of backache and opted for endoscopy too. `We have decided to do only 36 episodes and for his convenience we are going to change the location of the shoot, ` the source adds. Says Bachchan, `Yes, I believe that the set is now at Yash Raj. It is convenient for everyone to travel as Film City is very far.` However, Sneha Rajani, business head of the channel, maintains, `We are going to shoot in Yash Raj Studios not due to his health as he does not say no to anything nor does he interfere in anything. We are shooting in Yash Raj for better facilities. We wanted to shift the location for the past two years but it was not available.`

Kavita Kaushik, who has recently made a comeback to comedy show "F.I.R.", believes a TV actor's life is tougher than that of a film actor. "There are so many problems in a TV actor's life. There is no choreographer, so we have to do everything ourselves and that too in just a few minutes. This is the beauty of TV," the 32-year-old said here on location of "F.I.R." "People hold films higher (in higher regard) than TV. But I would say that TV actors do things in a few minutes, catch characters quickly and do scenes in minutes... and that too eight to nine scenes daily. The luxury of films is not available here. So we do everything ourselves in very little time," she added.

Kavita became popular with the role of Inspector Chandramukhi Chautala in "F.I.R.". She had quit the show in January, and featured in a new show "Tota Weds Maina", which went off air April. Now she is back on "F.I.R.". The actress hopes to play a journalist on screen someday. "I haven't played a journalist. I also want to ask 'Kaisa lag raha hai' (How are you feeling)... so I haven't played a journalist which I might play soon. There are a lot of other roles also which I haven't done," Kavita said. Kavita will be seen in an item number in the upcoming remake of 1973 film "Zanjeer".

Manoj Kumar's Surgery Successful

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar underwent successful gall bladder surgery Wednesday morning, which also happened to be his birthday, at the

Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, a doctor said. "The surgery went for an hour and it went off well. He is back in the room," Ram Narain, executive director at the hospital, said. The actor complained of pain and was admitted to the hospital July 17. Manoj Kumar, star of successful films like "Hariyali Aur Raasta", "Woh Kaun Thi?" and "Do Badan", turned 76 on Wednesday. He worked actively as an actor and filmmaker for about 30 years and also earned the title of "Bharat Kumar" for directing patriotic films like "Purab Aur Paschim" and "Upkar", which performed well at the box office.

At The Movies The Hunt (G) * * * * Innocence Lost!

by ROBERT WALDMAN
False accusations are hard to swallow. Told with tact and precision is the plight of an innocent man in The Hunt, the latest new film from Mongrel Media. Made in Denmark this jarring tale of child abuse is now scoring positive results at The Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Even English subtitles wont help numb the pain we witness first hand when a teacher is accused of bad things by a small child. Man on the hot seat is Lucas, a teacher adored by his charges. Top flight Danish acting ace Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) pulls off a breathtaking turn as a mild mannered kindergarten teacher loved by all who decide. Cute as a button Annika Wedderkopp plays Klara, a small girl with a vivid imagination that goes a bit too far. When Klara accuses Lucas of something bad it doesnt take long for the entire community to turn against him. Left with few if any friends The Hunt explores the harrowing plight of a man having to come to terms with his own inner demons. Members of the community quickly develop a hatred over the allegations and director Thomas Vinterberg succeeds in presenting the riveting decline of a once proud man. Disturbing on a variety of levels The Hunt is a masterful tale of emotional upheavals that affect all who come into contact with this troubled man. Watch how fast friends turn against one another as a viscous out of control mob mentality sets in. Few people know the real truth about what really happened and its horrific to see how the results unfold. Full of surprises The Hunt is a truly harrowing experience that boasts outstanding performances. Each person in this small village is expertly defined and the tension builds with palpating results. One of the best films of the year, The Hunt is a superb and shocking drama that will make all feel a bit dirty after seeing all that lead character Lucas has gone through.

Lisa Kudrow Feels 'Too Old' For Friends Reunion

Lisa Kudrow believes she's "too old" for a 'Friends' reunion. The 49-year-old actress played Pheobe Buffay in the TV sit-com for 10 years but she doesn't want to revisit her character for new episodes because she thinks the cast have all aged too much and she doesn't think there are any interesting stories for them. Speaking to HuffPost Live, she said: "I'm too old. I wouldn't even have an interest in seeing what those people are doing 10 years later as parents that have to be

responsible ... It would be so different that it wouldn't be 'Friends' anymore." However, the blonde beauty hasn't ruled out collaborating with her former co-stars David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and Courteney Cox ever again and would probably do a reunion show if everyone else was keen to. She explained: "Of course I would do it if everyone wanted to do it. And everyone isn't the six of us - it's David Crane and Marta Kauffman who created the show." Matt - who played Joey Tribbiani in the program - previously revealed he wouldn't support the cast getting back together for more episodes or a movie. He said: "Yeah, that probably won't happen. There's no plans for anything like that. Everyone seems to be talking about that these days, but nope, no irons in the fire there." On the subject of a film, he continued: "I think it's a bit of a case of 'the book is better than the movie'. "Everyone identifies with those characters in their own way and everyone in their own mind imagines what has become of those characters. I just think it's best to leave it at that."

DID your expenses spiral out of control on your last holiday, forcing you to eat baked beans on toast for a month to bounce back? Find out how to avoid a budget blowout. It should go without saying that overseas trips are expensive, but what must be said is that some of these costs are unnecessary. Mainly the fees and charges that come with accessing your money overseas. Whether it's at the point of sale, the ATM or at the currency exchange office, intelligent travellers can save hundreds, if not thousands on fees and charges when they're abroad. The key is knowing the fees you can avoid and how to minimise the cost of the ones you can't. Credit cards Anyone who uses a standard credit card to pay for their day to day expenses while they're abroad is going to get smacked with fees when they use their card to make a purchase or withdraw cash. The main culprit is the currency conversion fee. This fee goes by a couple of names, foreign currency conversion fee, foreign transaction fee and cross currency conversion fee to name a few, and is charged when a lender converts Australian dollars into a foreign currency so a transaction can take place. Commonly, a lender will pocket two or three percent of the total value of the transaction for providing the currency exchange service. The easiest way to avoid this charge is to use a card that has no conversion fee. Cards like the GEM 28 Degrees MasterCard, the Bankwest Platinum range of credit cards and the Aussie Platinum Low Rate Card all waive this fee and come with a range of travel friendly features like complimentary international travel insurance, which is another couple of hundred saved - even before you've left the country. Anatomy of an international cash advance Local ATM operator fee: $2 International ATM fee: $5 Cash advance fee: 1.50 per cent Cross currency conversion fee: 3 per cent Interest charges: 20 per cent Cash advance fees can also be an irksome point for overseas travellers. Each time you use your credit card to withdraw cash from an ATM, there's a host of fees you're likely to incur. There's the cash advance fee, local ATM operator fee, international ATM fee and interest, which is charged from the day you withdraw cash. A good option is to load money onto your credit card so your account is in surplus. This way, you can use your card at an ATM and avoid cash advance interest rates of approximately 20 per cent, but there will still be a cash advance fee and local and international ATM operator fee. Using your credit card is not a smart option for the frugal traveller, but if you must do it, use your own money, not the banks. Travel money cards Travel money cards are an interesting way of managing cash while overseas. They are a great option for the security conscious, although the trade-off is that many of the products on the market have more in fees than a stray dog has in fleas. There's the cross currency conversion fee, which ranges from 2 5.45 per cent, reload fees of 1 per cent and in some instances, transaction fees for purchases. Reload fees are unavoidable. The nature of these cards require you to deposit funds in order to use them. Once again, the cross currency conversion fee is the main charge to watch out for. These cards work by allowing people to pre-load "currency buckets" onto the card. For instance, US currency is one bucket and Euros are another. If you don't have the available funds in one particular currency, the card will automatically convert another bucket into the currency you wish to use, and charge you a cross currency conversion fee in doing so. This fee can be avoided with a little planning. If you know you're going to be in the Euro-Zone, make sure you have Euros on your card. If it means loading more currency onto the card and paying the reload fee, it's still approximately 2 per cent less than what you would have paid had you converted the funds from a different currency bucket. Transaction accounts General transaction accounts can be a good way of accessing your money while abroad, but be warned, just like credit cards and travel money cards, transaction accounts can also be an expensive form of holiday finance. There is a cross currency conversion fee and ATM operator fees. The good news is you can avoid some, or all of these fees with a little planning. Anatomy of an ATM withdrawal Foreign ATM fee (charged by Australian institution): Approx. $5. Local ATM operator fee: you will be notified at the time of the transaction. Cross currency conversion fee: 3 per cent If you're looking to cut back on local ATM operator fees, use an ATM that is part of your bank's global ATM alliance. Many leading Australian banks have alliances with major overseas retail banks. Westpac, for instance, has an alliance with Deutsche and Barclay's Bank, which provides free ATM services in countries such as the United Kingdom through to Zimbabwe. Saving $5 on an ATM transaction is not a reason for dramatically altering your travel plans; however, with a little foresight, you can plan your withdrawals at your bank's alliance ATMs and save yourself the sometimes exorbitant cost of accessing your money overseas. The Citibank Plus Transaction Account makes it easy to access your money overseas. You can save on the cross currency conversion fee, international ATM fee, but local ATM operator fees may still apply if you're using an ATM outside of the Citibank Network. The easiest tourist trap to avoid starts here at home with your choice of how to get cash and make purchases overseas. Fees that come with standard products start to add up and can whittle away your holiday funds faster than you can down a cocktail. If you want to extend the good times, make your money go further by being smart about how you choose to access your funds when overseas.

The VW Passat was redesigned in 2012, and and it's a larger, more affordable car than Passats of the past. Where it once could hit the $40,000 mark with options, the Passat now competes with other mid-size sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata. It was time for a reboot, and reboot it did in a massive way. Today's Passat is bigger, less complex, and it's built in Tennessee, all in the name of bringing it closer in line with the mass market here, in terms of price and interior space and fuel economy. Now selling strongly, the Passat has added a new dimension to the VW reputation for engineering--this time, for engineering it into something more pocketbookfriendly. It's grown longer and wider in the process, and that's a key virtue of the latest Passat that's immediately apparent in its look. It's pure Volkswagen, and tame by almost any standard, but attractive and refined in a way that some of the more bawdy four-doors are not. It's big but not bulky, especially at the front end where a delicately rendered grille might be its best detail. The cabin's pure throwback to the VWs of the 1980s, with a horizontal layout that leaves everything to the imagination, and makes the last Passat look like an orgy of curves. It's a bluntly appealing place to work, even if it's only roughly the equal of the cabin in a Fusion or an Altima or a Legacy, and nothing like the outgoing Passat's tightly grained, rich-feeling environment. Work is what the base five-cylinder engine has to do to win over fans. It's free of flair, and delivers its 170 understated horsepower in an unenthusiastic way through either a manual or automatic transmission to the front wheels. No worries--it's the turbodiesel you want anyway, as much for its eager off-the-line torque as for its 43-mpg highway rating with the

safety technology. It remains shy of some infotainment and luxury features, either altogether or specifically on some models and combinations. Want a base Passat TDI with cloth seats, satellite radio and a USB port? It doesn't exist. The Passat S doesn't have rear-seat air vents. Only the V-6 SEL has an option for real leather seats, though the synthetic stuff on most other models does a tough, convincing job. We're sold on the packaging, but when it comes to a specific Passat, the TDI is the hands-down choice. For about $25,000 base, you'll get a sedan with about 700 miles of driving in each tank of fuel, limousine-like rear-seat room, with a dash of the handling brio you'd expect from a Volkswagen. If those attributes top your shopping list for a new family sedan, the Passat rules-knowing there may be better values, better lookers and better straightline performers out there.

manual, though we'd always opt for the dual-clutch automatic unless we lived, ate, and breathed hypermiling. There's a V-6 option with 280 horsepower and a more muscular attitude, but it seems opulent and indulgent in such a bare, restrained car. Road manners are as close to the outgoing Passat as they possibly can be, given the stretch in wheelbase, with minor differences in steering feel in the TDI's partly electrified system, and due to tire sizes. Still, the Passat is a large car, so it's not nimble in the strictest sense of the word--it just carries its size well. The Passat's gained its family-sedan status in one big way. The rear seat is tremendous, bigger than the bench in an Azera or an Avalon, with the kind of ease of entry and exit we're used to getting in a minivan. The trunk's also pretty vast. But it's also earned excellent safety scores, and adds a rearview camera on some models this year, addressing a real dearth of useful

Summer Safety Tips For Drivers

Summer is off to a beautiful start. The sun is out, neighborhood pools are open, baseball is on, and the sounds of kids playing in the yard echo late into the evening. Its easy to relax during these months and be distracted by thoughts of vacation, but as a driver, these momentary lapses can be dangerous for fellow patrons of the road. Here are some summer tips for staying safe: Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is a primary reason for sluggishness. Instead of chugging caffeinated beverages, which will dehydrate you more, sip on some refreshing water to boost energy and clarity of mind. SLOW DOWN near schools, churches, and parks. Even though school is out, many children still frequent their schools for summer sports, including baseball and swimming. Summer school is also in session. That yellow warning light may not be flashing, but its still best to slow down to a manageable speed that will enable you to brake quickly if necessary. Be vigilant in work zones. Roadwork is frequently done during the warm summer months. Work zones will pop up suddenly, and tired construction workers are less aware of where they step. Pay close attention to speed limits (and remember: Fines are often doubled or tripled in work zones) and keep your distance from the shoulder to avoid clipping a worker. Watch for the summer road warriors. This summer, thousands of families will pack into their cars and hit the pavement for vacation time. Many of these vehicles have children in the back, so safety is extremely important. Allow for extra room when passing, dont follow too closely, and watch for bikers when making left or right turns. Inspect, inspect, inspect. Are your tires inflated properly? What are your fluid levels? Equipment can fail under soaring temperatures, leaving you in precarious situations on the road. Inspect your truck thoroughly and at regular intervals. Check your brakes. Here is what we recommend: Build the air pressure to maximum (120 psi) and then charge the trailers air system. Next, release the parking brake and apply the service (foot) brake. The initial drop of pressure must not drop further with the engine idling, and the pressure should begin to build. Slow build up of pressure may indicate a bad compressor. Then turn off the engine and rapidly apply and release the brakes. The low air warning must activate before the gauge reads 60 psi. Continue to fan down the air pressure. The trailer brakes automatically apply when the gauge is between 45 and 20 psi. The Trailer Air Supply knob will pop out. Build the air pressure back up again (120 psi) and turn off the engine. Press and hold the service (foot) brake and listen for air leaks by rolling down your window. In addition, watch your tank air gauges to ensure the needles do not move, which would indicate an air leak (visually). Finally, make a test stop before leaving the yard. Watch for sudden changes in weather. Summer can be as unpredictable as winter. Clouds can roll in and drop hail or torrential rain within seconds, and, as we all know, people dont drive very well when its wet outside. While truckers are used to going the normal speed, they may need to adjust according to those driving ahead and behind their rigs. Again, allow plenty of room for passing and dont follow too closely.

Roberto Luongo enters the 2013-14 season as the Canucks' number-one netminder. It's a position he did not enjoy entering the lockout-shortened 2013 season. Embroiled in a long battle for playing time with fellow netminder Cory Schneider that dates back to before the Canucks' 2011 Stanley Cup Final run, Luongo spent the better part of the past 12 months addressing trade speculation. However, at last month's NHL Draft, Canucks general manager Mike Gillis would make a shocking move - dealing Schneider instead of Luongo. The deal netted the Canucks the ninth overall pick - which they would use to select Bo Horvat - and handed the net firmly back over to Luongo for the foreseeable future. Speaking at the Vancouver Canucks' Summer Summit - an event organized by the Canucks for its fans to update them on team business and news Gillis was asked immediately about his decision to deal Schneider. What happened could have been the result all the way through, Gillis said of the decision to deal Schneider. At the end of the day we had to make a choice and we made the choice to go to Roberto. The choice was a surprise to many, so much so that Gillis travelled to Florida to have a face-to-face visit with Luongo at his home to discuss his role moving forward. Gillis' recount of that conversation was one of a changed Luongo, the same player that has become a loose and candid person with the media and fans alike. It's been a remarkable transformation, Gillis said of Luongo's shift from the end of 2011 to now. He felt that after that [2011 Stanley Cup Final] series happened he was blamed more than others or that he was held accountable more than others. However, Gillis would reiterate that he's comfortable with Luongo as his starter and also stated his belief that his goaltender would also be representing

FIJI Football Association and the Oceania Football Confederation have reacted strongly to the ongoing racist remarks on the football pitch involving former Fiji nationals in New Zealand. According to a report on the Manawatu Standard "racist remarks have been blight on Palmerston North football pitches". "Members of the Manawatu Fijian Football Club, who play for Palmerston North's North End AFC Blues team, a side made up of predominantly FijianIndian players, say they've had their share of difficulties during the years." Players told the Manawatu Standard they had been verbally abused by opposition supporters and been the target of on-field, off-ball attacks which has resulted in some quitting the game. OFC head of media and communications Daniel Markham said they could not comment "directly" because none of these incidents took place during OFC tournaments. "But we can say that OFC is fully supportive of FIFA's campaign against discrimination and aims to assist in the abolishment of all forms of discrimination in football in any way possible," Markham told Times Sport via email. Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said New Zealand Football Association should solve the issue before it gets out of control. "There is no place for racism in football. FIFA has taken a strong stance on it and so is Fiji FA, we will not tolerate any racism in football," he said. "What's happening in New Zealand is the duty of New Zealand Football Association to curb and I think they need to nip it in the bud right now before it gets out of hand. "If there is any help needed from the Fiji FA side we will take it up with the Oceania and then to FIFA too. "New Zealand Football Association has to be very mindful of what is happening under their nose." A 'Kick Racism Out' program has been launched in New Zealand to fight discrimination and encourage inclusive practices on the pitch. Manawatu Fijian Football Club committee member Nathaniel Satya, who left Fiji 17 years ago, said there was a struggle for acceptance. "North End call themselves a family club, but I think they're a multicultural club they went out of their way to accept us when other clubs kicked us out or didn't want us, and we're thankful they've given us the opportunity to play," he told the Manawatu Standard. "And, we've had great success businesswise, and in the community we have no problems, but it's just football where there is problems. "We go there at the end of a hardworking week just to have some fun, but we end up leaving so depressed. And 90 per cent of the time it's fine, but there's one or two incidents that spoil it for everyone, and I'm sure there is something that can be done." North End president Rob Paewai told Manawatu Standard that "tonguein-cheek" comments at the club's members were often misconstrued. He added the club was trying to combat such remarks. "Maybe other clubs take offence to our teams and how they carry on sometimes, but they're very passionate and emotional people and if they score a goal, it's like the winning goal at the World Cup." Central Football chief executive John McGifford said they would not tolerate any racist remarks on the pitch. "Every sport is trying to eradicate any kind of abuse or offensive remarks, whether it be to other players, to referees or anyone participating in the sport, we're all trying our very best but it is something that is extremely hard to control," McGifford said. Hawke's Bay United which plays in the ASB Premiership banned a spectator who voiced a racist remark last year.

Canada at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. "Roberto will be our starting goalie," Gillis added. "I feel very optimistic about it." Other issues addressed at the summit included the hopes that the roof will be open at B.C. Place Stadium when the Vancouver Canucks host the Ottawa Senators in the Heritage Classic in March. "If worse comes to worse and it needs to be a covered facility, it'll be a covered facility," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "We hope that's not the case." Daly fielded questions ahead of Gillis and spoke of the Heritage Classic, amongst other league business like officiating, the health of the League and the possibility of an NHL franchise in Seattle. "I think there's a willingness to consider (expansion)," said Daly. Seattle was seen as a popular destination for the troubled Phoenix Coyotes, who faced a possibility of relocation ahead of a Glendale City Council vote last month. The vote, however, wound up a positive one for the Coyotes, with the City approving a lease deal that could pave the way for the sale of the team to the Renaissance Sports and Entertainment Group. New head coach John Tortorella gave Canucks fans some unexpected news, unveiling two new assistant coaches in the question and answer period. Tortorella revealed that the team has added Mike Sullivan - with whom he worked with the New York Rangers - as well as former Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan as assistant coaches. Gulutzan spent two years behind the bench in Dallas, posting a 64-579 record. The Stars would miss the playoffs both years under Gulutzan, who was replaced last month by former Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff. The team also announced at the summer summit that they would be honouring Canucks great Pavel Bure, by retiring his number 10 in a ceremony during this upcoming season.

Canucks Retiring Pavel Bures No. 10 Jersey

The Vancouver Canucks are retiring Pavel Bures No. 10 jersey and hanging it from the rafters at Rogers Arena, the team announced Tuesday. The Russian Rocket will become only the fourth player in franchise history to receive the honour, joining former captains Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden and Markus Naslund. Its a huge honour. Im just really proud and happy to be next to Stan Smyl, who I just saw today and we were talking [about] how we start together, Bure said at a news conference Tuesday. He played with the Canucks from 1991 to 1999, and still holds team records for most points scored by a rookie and most career shorthanded goals. The 42-year-old also became the first player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Vancouver Canuck last year. The team has not yet announced a date for the retirement ceremony.

the host team. Damian who stands only at approximately five feet tall plays scrum half for the team. With his speed and quick thinking, Damian makes the plays. In a recent 2 day tournament held in Kamloops BC, Damian was also honoured as Man Of The Match.

Besides rugby, Damian is also an excellent soccer player. Being born and raised in Canada, it's nice to see a young man take interest in sports that is in the roots of all Fijians. Damian will travel to Wales in 2015 for rugby matches which will be hosted by the Wales teams.
