2012 Bay Mills Indian Community American Indian Adult Tobacco Survey (AI-ATS)

Specific Aims
To empower the BMIC to effectively engage in surveillance and monitoring of attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs related to tobacco use among tribal members.
To provide representative and tribally specific data that can be used in the development of tobacco prevention and cessation initiatives that best address the needs of tribal members. To provide data that will allow tribes to set health priorities and substantiate the need for continued tobacco control resources. To provide data to inform the development of tribal policies that aim to reduce the consumption of tobacco products, and the publics exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.

Methodology
Study participants were randomly sampled from enrollment list.

Participants were limited to adult enrolled tribal members residing


within BMIC service area at the time of the survey. Survey questionnaire administered face-to-face. Data cleaned and analyzed using SPSS software 70 total participants completed the survey 95% Confidence Interval 11.0%

Study Team
Data from this study was collected by Bay Mills tribal college students.

Of these current smokers, 3.1% are someday smokers (Those respondents who indicated smoking less than everyday of the week are classified as someday smokers) and 96.9% are everyday smokers.

The mean number of cigarettes smoked per day by males was (13.5) which was not statistically different than females (13.3). The mean number of cigarettes smoked by all smokers was (13.4) in 2012.
