Holy Eucharist

28 July 2013 Ninth Sunday after Trinity 10.30 am

Welcome to St Philips

From 10.20 am the altar party will be observing a time of silence and prayer in the vestry. We encourage you to spend this time preparing quietly for the service.

THE GATHERING Stand At the name of Jesus Caroline Noel (1817-77) NEH 338 At the name of Jesus Every knee shall bow, Every tongue confess him King of glory now; Tis the Fathers pleasure We should call him Lord, Who from the beginning Was the mighty Word. At his voice creation Sprang at once to sight, All the angel faces, All the hosts of light, Thrones and dominations, Stars upon their way, All the heavenly orders, In their great array. Humbled for a season, To receive a name From the lips of sinners Unto whom he came, Faithfully he bore it Spotless to the last, Brought it back victorious When from death he passed.

Bore it up triumphant With its human light, Through all ranks of creatures, To the central height, To the throne of Godhead, To the Fathers breast; Filled it with the glory Of that perfect rest. In your hearts enthrone him; There let him subdue All that is not holy, All that is not true: He is God the Saviour, He is Christ the Lord, Ever to be worshipped, Trusted and adored. Brothers, this Lord Jesus Shall return again, With the Fathers glory, With his angel train; For all wreaths of empire Meet upon his brow, And our hearts confess him King of glory now. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. The presiding Priest says: Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Sit Reading Genesis 18.20-32 Then the LORD said, How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their sin! I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know. So the men turned from there, and went towards Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the LORD. Then Abraham came near and said, Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just? And the LORD said, If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive the whole place for their sake. Abraham answered, Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there. Again he spoke to him, Suppose forty are found there. He answered, For the sake of forty I will not do it. Then he said, Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there. He answered, I will not do it, if I find thirty there. He said, Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord. 8

Suppose twenty are found there. He answered, For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it. Then he said, Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there. He answered, For the sake of ten I will not destroy it. All This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading Luke 11.1-13 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him. And he answers from within, Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything. I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs. So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 10

Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy
Spirit to those who ask him!

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Revd David Walsh We keep silence.

The Creed Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

All

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. 11

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A collection will be taken during this hymn. If you are a UK taxpayer, your gift will go further if you use one of the Gift Aid envelopes provided. All O Thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray that all thy Church might be for ever one, Grant us at every Eucharist to say With longing heart and soul, Thy will be done. Oh, may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. For all thy Church, O Lord, we intercede; Make thou our sad divisions soon to cease; Draw us the nearer each to each, we plead, By drawing all to thee, O Prince of Peace: Thus may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. 14

We pray thee too for wanderers from thy fold; O bring them back, good Shepherd of the sheep, Back to the faith which saints believed of old, Back to the Church which still that faith doth keep: Soon may we all one Bread, one Body be, One through this Sacrament of unity. So, Lord, at length when sacraments shall cease, May we be one with all thy Church above, One with thy saints in one unbroken peace, One with thy saints in one unbounded love: More blessd still, in peace and love to be One with the Trinity in Unity. Preparation of the Table Taking of the Bread and Wine Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this bread to set before you, which earth has given and human hands have made. it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this wine to set before you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. it will become for us the cup of salvation. Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and our salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise: All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again. 17

All

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. Bring us at the last with Mary, Philip and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.
