Looks into purchase of used

By NICK COHEN
The Tabernacle Sun
For one week of the year, the
darkness and quiet of the Pine
Barrens are replaced with the
sounds of carousels, carnival
games and the aroma of home
cooked goodies. That week was
last week as the Pine Barrens Fes-
tival celebrated 25 years.
Its been a great success, an-
other great community-building
event, Father Andrew Jamieson
of Church of the Holy Eucharist
said on the opening night of the
festival. We just want everyone to
turn out and enjoy a great time
with their families and children,
enjoy great food and great enter-
tainment. Its a great time.
The annual festival takes place
on the Church of The Holy Eu-
charists property and continues
to be the biggest event on the re-
gions calendar. Between 35,000
and 40,000 visitors were expected
to visit this year and enjoy the
family friendly atmosphere, while
supporting a good cause.
The money goes directly to the
parish and its upkeep for the year.
Its our biggest fundraiser for the
church, Jamieson said. We need
a new roof, with the project begin-
ning in September, and $70,000 is
slated for that so were hoping the
festival can go a long way in rais-
ing that.

Committee
looks into
buying used
fire truck
By NICK COHEN
The Tabernacle Sun
The Tabernacle township com-
mittee announced plans to look
into the purchase of a used fire
truck from the Moorestown Fire
Department at its most recent
meeting on July 22.
Committeeman Joseph Barton
received word that Moorestown
was putting the truck up for pub-
lic auction, so he reached out to
them in hopes of seeing it before
that process started.
Along with township adminis-
trator Doug Cramer, he met with
the Moorestown Fire Department
and got the opportunity to tour as
well as learn more about the
truck.
The truck is a 1998 model with
approximately 32,000 miles on it,
but, according Barton, the engine
had been rebuilt recently so the
vehicle is in better condition
than its age would imply. Barton
felt the truck could be purchased
from Moorestown in the range of
$50,000 to $75,000.
The townships ability to pur-
chase a new truck at all, though,
is laced with potential road-
blocks.
The Tabernacle Board of Fire
Commissioners, a separate entity
from the township, has tried in
recent years to purchase a new
truck but the public always has
voted down the referendum.
Their most recent election on
the issue scheduled for July 5 was
cancelled due to a clerical error
and rescheduled for Oct. 12.
Since the referendum had been
voted down in the past, concerns
were raised at the meeting about
the township potentially cir-
cumventing voters if they pur-
chased the truck without includ-
ing the fire commissioners.
Certainly we dont want to
circumvent the residents at all,
and it is vital that we work with

On Saturday, July 20, Kirsten
Jeansson, sophomore at Seneca
High School, was named 2013-
2014 Burlington County Senior
Equestrian of the Year at the
Burlington County Farm Fair.
Kirsten was the 2011-2012 Jun-
ior Equestrian of the Year.
The Equestrian of the Year
contest is a countywide 4-H com-
petition in which candidates are
judged on their community and
4-H involvement, essay submis-
sion, interview skills and public
speech presentation.
Kirsten has been a member of
4-H for four years and is a mem-
ber of Tri-Boro 4-H Riders club,
equine science team, teen council
club, and girl scouts.
She has held numerous leader-
ship positions in her 4-H club,
and has won multiple sportsman-
ship awards.
At Seneca, Kirsten partici-
pates in student government and
newspaper, among other activi-
ties. She is an honor roll student
and recently was one of several 4-
Hers chosen to represent New
Jersey in Washington, D.C., at a
citizenship and leadership week-
long workshop.
She works and rides at Gle-
neayre Farm in Lumberton,
where she rides her assigned
horse, Virgil. She trains with Ali-
son and Jason Newman.
Later this summer, Kirsten
will ride Virgil in the New Jersey
State 4-H Horse Show in Mon-
mouth County.
As Equestrian of the Year, she
will hold a voting seat on the
Horse Advisory Board, alongside
adult members, speak at multiple
events over the course of the
year, and represent New Jersey at
the New Jersey Equestrian of the
Year contest next August.

This year they are running their sixth
annual summer food drive and have raised
nearly $300 and approximately 530 pounds
so far. Murphy's Markets in Tabernacle al-

F
inally, nine months after Super-
storm Sandy touched ground,
New Jerseys economy is gain-
ing momentum.
A report released last week by Wells
Fargo, the states second largest bank
by deposits, says that federal and in-
surance money flowing into the state
to aid in the Sandy recovery started to
pay dividends in the first half of 2013,
and should continue to propel the
economy for the rest of this year.
According to the report, the state
added 4,200 construction jobs from
January to June of this year. The
same time last year, the industry lost
4,500 jobs.
Its a great sign for the state. Gov.
Christie estimated New Jersey suf-
fered $37 billion in damage from the
storm. Approximately 22,000 homes
were left uninhabitable and 325,000
others were significantly damaged.
Now, in the dead of the summer,
with the start of hurricane season ap-
proaching again, construction is heat-
ing up, fueling the states overall eco-
nomic recovery.
The Wells Fargo report wasnt all
peachy, though. While New Jerseys
economy was significantly better in
the first half of this year compared to
last, it still lags behind national aver-
ages. Six percent of all mortgages are
in foreclosure, the second-highest rate
in the country behind only Florida.
Housing prices grew only 2.9 percent
year over year, while the national aver-
age stood at 12.2 percent. New Jerseys
unemployment rate dropped almost a
point in the last year, and that trend is
expected to continue, but it still sits at
8.7 percent compared to the national
average of 7.6 percent.
These stats beg the questions:
Should we compare New Jersey to the
rest of the country? Or should we just
compare the Garden State to itself ?
New Jersey is a very unique state in
that its economy is fueled strongly by
two major metropolitan regions whose
city is in another state. The economy
works differently here. Employment
works differently here. Elections work
differently here. So why, then, if we
are an outlier, must we compare our-
selves to others?
For once, we need to focus on our
own recovery, and ensure we are
adding as many jobs as we can, no
matter what our stats look like com-
pared to every other state.
Recovery finally catching a break
Considerable momentum gained in first half of 2013, report says
Your thoughts
Should we rejoice in the positive outlook
for New Jerseys economy? Or should
we be worried that we lag behind the
rest of the country? Let your voice be
heard through a letter to the editor.

nate their time to the event from
both within and outside the
parish.
The parish maintains all the
booths, and the only part of the
event run by an outside source is
the rides.
Majestic Midways continues
to be great in providing the rides,
and they draw a lot of people to
the festival, Jamieson said.
For the first time a classic car
show was part of the celebration.
We had more than 70 cars and
15 monster trucks, Jamieson
said. We hoped it would bring
more people, come see the cars
then check out the festival or get
something to eat. Were definitely
happy about it being a part of the
event.
Its not all funnel cakes and
games as each night of the festival
is dedicated to honoring a Volun-
teer of the Year from the different
Pineland towns in the area.
Each town nominates two peo-
ple and the festival committee
makes the selection of who is Vol-
unteer of the Year, said Mary Fis-
chl, chairperson of the Culture
and History and Nature Re-
sources tent at the festival, in ad-
dition to organizing Volunteers of
the Year.
The award is given to someone
who has made an outstanding
contribution to the culture, histo-
ry and natural resource of the
Pine Barrens, Fischl said.
The family of Anthony Jr. and
Mildred Russo was recognized for
Tabernacle.
This award is being given to
the Russo Family in recognition
of more than 70 years of outstand-
ing community service through
several generations. Anthony Jr.
and Mildred have passed several
years ago, but their children, An-
thony III, Madeline Capelli and
Natalie Casano, continue the lega-
cy of hard work, citizenship and
volunteerism which began with
their parents many years ago.
Today, the Russo family has many
branches, including but not limit-
ed to the Capelli, Casano, An-
toniewicz, Gsell and Lehner fami-
lies, who are the children, grand-
children and great-grandchildren
of Mildred and Anthony Jr. With-
out question, the Russo family as
a whole continues to work to
make Tabernacle a great place to
live, Fischl said in a statement.

If you've been wearing
dentures for a long time,
you know what the den-
ture look means. Not
everyone who wears den-
tures is old, but when den-
tures get old, they make you
look that way. Thin lips,
deep creases at the corners
of the mouth, a more
prominent chin these are
all signs of the denture
look.
Facelift Dentures is a
new technique. Mt. Holly
Family Dentistry is one of a
very few dental offices in
the US trained in this
process. It utilizes the prin-
ciples of neuromuscular
dentistry that we have, for
many years, used to help pa-
tients who suffer from
headaches and TMJ prob-
lems. We start with relaxed
facial muscles to determine
the most comfortable bite
position and the optimum
facial aesthetics. We build
the denture from that as a
starting point and with
those goals in mind.
Mt. Holly Family Den-
tistry has a lot of experi-
ence creating new smiles
for our patients. Dental
makeovers have been a cor-
nerstone of our practice for
many years. Now we can ex-
tend that service to denture
patients. We frequently get
notes and letters from
spouses and children of our
patients telling us what a
difference the new dentures
have made. Its an exciting
and gratifying process for
doctor and patient. For
more information, contact
us at 609-267-3230 or on line

tistry.com.

Before
After
Members of fire district
not consulted about truck
the commissioners board to in-
vestigate the truck and the poten-
tial purchase, Mayor Stephen
Lee said.
There is still a lot of informa-
tion that needs to be had before
any decisions are made.
Several members of the fire
district were in attendance at the
meeting and appeared stunned
that the township had been look-
ing into this without consulting
them.
Im disappointed we were not
approached about this or even
kept in the loop, said a visibly
upset Nancy Freeman, who
serves as treasurer on the board
of fire commissioners.
Previously, both the fire dis-
trict and the township have dis-
cussed keeping a truck in the
new emergency services building
for a quicker response to emer-
gencies in the eastern part of the
township, and this new truck
could potentially serve that pur-
pose.
No official decisions were
made at the meeting other than
Lee instructing Barton to make
sure the fire district was kept ap-
prised as the process moved for-
ward.
Moorestown has already
phased the truck out of regular
use, so the sale could be made at
any time.
