1 Whats New In Togo?

World Bank approves funds to support Togos efforts to rehabilitate roads and drainage systems damaged by flooding th The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today (5 June 2013) approved a US$14 million IDA* grant to suppor t the Government of Togos efforts to rehabilitate roads, drains and other infrastructure, to scale-up urban services, and strengthen the capacity of institutions. Togo, together with most countries in West Africa, suffered from heavy precipitation and f looding during the fall of 2010 rainy season, said Madani M. Tall, World Bank Country Director for Togo. The proposed rehabilitation works will improve access to basic services and contribute to creating jobs and supporting the Government in its efforts to build resiliency to future flooding impacts. The funds will support the on-going Emergency Infrastructure Rehabilitation and Energy Project (EIREP). The project has two components: the first, rehabilitating infrastructure such as drains, canals and gutters, is aimed at reducing the number of people affected by periodic flooding in low-lying poor neighborhoods of the capital city, Lom. The second component is designed to strengthen the capacity of the institutions involved in the management and implementation of the project and those responsible for delivering urban services. Over 86,000 people were affected throughout the country, many of whom lived mainly in low -lying pockets of Lom, said Jamal Saghir the World Bank's Director of Sustainable Devel opment for the Africa Region. This funding will enable the government of Togo to further expand the rehabilitation of the drainage system and roads while reducing the disruption of urban services. These funds will support the rebuilding some 10 kms of drainage infrastructure in Lome and of about five kilometers of secondary roads. The drainage works are expected to benefit some 48,000 people while the road upgrades will benefit as many as 27,500 people with all-season transport access. The labor-intensive methods for drain rehabilitation to be used under the project will clearly contribute to the livelihoods of local residents in the project neighborhoods. Moreover, the road rehabilitation efforts supported by these funds will improve and lower the cost of transportation in low-income neighborhoods located far from job opportunities, saidKwabena Amankwah -Ayeh, World Bank Task Team Leader for the project. I am pleased to continue supporting this project and the jobs and benefits it brings to the people living in and near Togos capital city.

Business as Usual

Over the last month, PDH has hosted many community meetings for adults and children. One of the adult classes was on HIV prevention with existing HIV patients. The class focused on how to prevent them spreading the disease within the local communities and the use of safe sex methods.

Togos school children, like many abroad, are currently preparing for their exams which are set to take place at the end of June. PDH has been helping and education local children on the Importance and techniques for revision, so to help the children be better prepared for the exams ahead.

3 Good News
Ismael (4-63)
Ismael is a 7 month old baby boy from the town of Sotouboua in the Central region of Togo. his parents are young local farmers in the region, who are only able to provide basic food and housing for their 1st newly born child. At birth Ismael was born without an anus and the local hospital was unable to treat her due to the complicated procedures involved. At the age of 1 month he was moved to the Central Hospital in the capital Lome after a sack like mass started growing out of his back. Now at the age of 7 months, following three operations, the doctors have been able to remove the growing mass from his back. In addition, following a forth operation on the 10th June, the doctors have been able to surgically correct his condition; allowing his body to operate correctly by creating a functioning anus. PDH in collaboration with the Religious Congregation of Sisters of Providence of St. Gaetan and two of the Surgical Doctors treating Ismael have paid for the medication and operations to give Ismael a normal life. He has now recovered fully and been given the all clear by the hospital and has returned with his parents back to Sotouboua.

Grace 04 69 Grace is a fourteen year old girl, from an impoverished local family. She is the eldest of six, and has been fortunate to receive the support of Carolin, a former PDH volunteer, through the sponsorship program. Grace is an extremely intelligent girl, and with the recent release of her school results, PDH is happy to report that Grace received a mention of Assez Bien. This means that Grace managed to maintain an overall average of between 12 and 14 out of 20. This is a truly excellent result given the difficult circumstances her family faces everyday just to survive. When asked what she was going to do during her holidays, she told us that she was going to use some of her sponsorship money to start a small holiday job of selling peanuts to try and help her family and contribute towards her costs for the next school year. Congratulations Grace!

5 Sad News
Yasmine (04-61)
Yasmine is a four year old little Muslim girl; whose father divorced her mother 2 years ago after converting to Christianity. She is the only daughter of four children. In May 2011 when she was a year old, she drank caustic soda in the middle of the night while her parents were sleeping. Immediately after the incident, she was driven to the Hospital in downtown Bassar, before being transferred to the University Hospital Center in the city of Kara, where she was treated for 3 months. After originally being released from hospital, she was often readmitted due to repeated problems of losing consciousness. Two or so years after the incident, Yasmine became unable to swallow solid food and medical tests revealed she suffers from dysphagia to solid foods. She was then transferred to the University Hospital Center of Lome where she has now been hospitalized in the Pediatric Surgery centre since January 29, 2013. Yasmine has already undergone five surgeries on her esophagus, the fifth having taken th place on Wednesday 10 July. Unfortunately due to her age this is the only surgery doctors are willing to perform, and it will have to be continually repeated until she is old enough for the scarred part of the esophagus to be removed and then rejoined. Her mothers lack of funds after the divorce and supporting three other children, means they are unable to afford the continual medical bills as each operation costs 50,000 CFA, leaving little Yasmine to an uncertain fate.

Jeannette (01-264)
Jeannette is a 45 year old, mother of three children who was abandoned by her family. After feeling excruciating pain in her left breast in 2012; she visited the hospital in Afangnan and then the Central Hospital in Tsvi and finally Sylvanus Olympio Hospital Lome for treatment. After her last visit to the Central Hospital Sylvanus Olympio in November 2012, examinations and assessments revealed that she suffers from a cancerous tumor in the left breast the dimension being 10 cm. Jeannette must undergo surgery and chemotherapy at the total cost of 3,000,000 CFA. After the results of the examinations, Jeannette sold all her possessions to help pay for the treatments. Jeannette as a poor patient was referred to PDH by Sister Veronica of the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence of St. Gatan Kouv. With no financial means to pay for her surgery and chemotherapy they have enlisted the help of PDH.

In that time I felt a little prepared for what Lome would be like and what volunteering in an African country would involve. I was wrong! Volunteering at PDH gives you a unique insight into communities, people and aspects you would not normally see through the travelling eyes. Moving away from the town centre and meeting local people you start to understand the true poverty behind Africa, the destitution and helplessness they experience day to day that is completely incomprehensible to many visitors and travelers. PDH and the local volunteers do amazing work to help these communities; whether by providing money for medication/operations for struggling families, educating and helping young people at school or counseling HIV patients.

I have just completed my stay at PDH, and what an experience! Even though, before coming, I thought I had prepared myself for what was in store, I am afraid I was wrong. The suffering that I have witnessed here is tragic. But I think what is more tragic is if people continue to remain unaware. I would encourage everyone to come to Togo and experience their reality. When I first arrived I had decided to keep a travel journal, after my first visit to the hospital I was unable to write another word as words were inadequate to convey my feelings. However, these sad times were tempered with lovely times, and I will cherish Emily John the memories I have of the wonderful people I met and Student th 147 International Volunteer at worked with at PDH. Their dedication and hard work is PDH beyond compare, and I applaud their efforts. I wish I could st th 1 to 23 July 2013 have done more but I think the important lesson I learned is everybody can do something; it is not acceptable to sit back and remain ignorant.

Join Us!

PDH warmly welcomes international interest in our volunteer program. We have hosted a diverse crowd in Lom over the last decade from solo travellers, to groups of friends, to one motherdaughter pairing all of whom fit into the organisation equally. Regardless of your age (we have seen 19 through to 67) or your profession, volunteer work in Togo can be a profound experience.

How long can I stay? There are no minimum or maximum stays at PDH, we are willing to work with your schedule to find something that works for both of us. How much does the program cost? Volunteers are asked to make a 100,000f CFA (150 EUR / 200 USD) donation on arrival. Full board accommodation is then provided at a rate of 25,000 (37.5 EUR / 50 USD) per week. Ie 12 weeks would total to 400,000f CFA (600 EUR / 800 USD). What is the accommodation like? You will be accommodated with a host either at the centre or with a partnering family in a comfortable room with basic amenities. Please keep in mind that conditions in Togo may not meet what you are used to at home however we work to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Let your host know of any dietary preferences so they can tailor meals to you! What does a typical work day look like? On a typical Monday to Friday, you will attend our daily meeting at 07:30 before accompanying one of our agents on a case visit. From 13:00 to 14:45 you are encouraged to take a long lunch with your host, before returning to document your visit in the afternoon and assist with activities at the centre until 17:30.

Some finer points to consider: Access to Money: VISA Bankcards Only! Please note that only VISA bankcards work in Togo. Mastercard, Maestro and American Express are not accepted anywhere. Funding your Flights While living expenses are low, we know getting her can be a financial challenge. Research flights on sites such as http://skycanner.com, http://hipmunk.com or http://matrix.itasoftware.com to find your cheapest option. You may then consider fundraising through friends and family, or researching organisations that offer volunteer grants, such as: http://go-volunteerabroad.com/volunteer-abroad-scholarship

Please carefully read the Essential guidelines for volunteering at PDH which we forward to all prospective volunteers.

Express your interest today by sending an email to pdh_volontaires@yahoo.fr though please allow up to one week for our reply, we work with a very limited internet connection!

Help With Closed Pockets

We at PDH are aware that many of you who would like to help our cause here in Togo simply cannot, due to your own financial limits. There are, however, various alternatives to sending money that can greatly benefit the humanitarian work of PDH. Spread the word Our website features a Download Depot, which stores posters and desktop images. You can download and/or print these items in order to promote our organization in relevant locations around your town or city eg. cafs, churches and universities. Promote PDH Help us to promote our cause and international profile by telling your friends and family about us. The more people that know about PDH, the greater our support network - it's that simple. You may also know somebody who is in a position that can greatly aid us by promoting our cause; a university lecturer who could throw us up on a slide, a local priest who could speak to his congregation, or even a travel agent. You could provide them with a copy of this newsletter to distribute. Like us on facebook! Every acknowledgement of our work means a lot to the local volunteers, so consider liking us today! http://www.facebook.com/PDHTogo Pray For those of you who are religious, you will know the value of prayer that money simply cannot buy. Please remember us in your prayers, as everyone's spiritual faith is integral to the work that we carry out here. Fundraise You can help PDH raise funds by conducting your own fundraising event. For example, auctioning off old belongings on Ebay or hosting a dinner with a silent auction.

10 Reflections on Donations

We often get questions about what people can send to us to help. Over the last couple of years more and more things that we need such as school books, stationery and condoms are available here to buy. Monetary donations are the most liquid, and thus most effective donation that we can receive. We avoid postal costs, and often prices are cheaper here so we can gain the maximum value from your money. Another positive outcome from doing it this way is that it helps the local economy here in Togo. On the other hand if there is something in particular that you would like to send over (e.g. clothes, puzzles, board games) then feel free to do so; we know sometimes it is nice to send over products that you have chosen, so we will always be happy to accept any packages we receive. We are also very grateful for supplies that volunteers bring with them from their families and friends.

11 How to Donate
Very often at PDH, we are forced to turn away people that we, quite simply, cannot help. This is due to the extremely limited nature of our financial and material resources as we are 100% dependant on donations and volunteers.

We believe that PDH is an excellent choice for those of you who are willing to donate money to a small non-government, non-profit aid organization. This is because our administration costs are very low and we guarantee that your donation - in its entirety - will provide relief that is desperately required by those in need. To send a cheque direct to Lom (in either , $US or ): Payable to: Centre Social PDH Address: 02 B.P. 20832 Lom, Togo, West Africa If writing a cheque please be aware that it might take several weeks to arrive because the post can be quite slow.

For amounts less than 50 we recommend either using cheques or contacting us to avoid unnecessary fees charged by the Togolese bank.
