MASTER OF SCIENCE

By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions. McKinsey Global Institute

MS in Business Intelligence & Analytics: A New Breed of Business School Student

The dynamics of business and industry have changed and todays marketplace demands a new breed of professionals who are innovative, entrepreneurial and analytical thinkers. To remain competitive, corporations in all industries must rely on the strategic analysis and interpretation of large volumes of data to grow their business. Yet, a lack of skilled talent is available to meet the demands of industry. The traditional foundation for managing and interpreting big data focuses on courses such as database management, data warehousing, business intelligence and data/text mining. However, these analytical skill sets in and of themselves are no longer sufficient to satisfy the burgeoning demand for data analysts and BI specialists. Todays professionals are also expected to understand how to interpret and effectively communicate how to apply these concepts and techniques to realworld business problems. The Stevens MS-BI&A curriculum was created based on input from industry advisors, executives and key research leaders across industries. The input gathered emphasized industrys need for analysts who understand the business implications of their analyses, and most importantly, possess the ability to effectively communicate their findings to management. The Stevens MS-BI&A program was developed to meet these needs. Students of the BI&A program will immediately be able to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to transform big data into business intelligence that can be used to: drive efficiency, maximize investments, strengthen consumer and market data and leverage overall knowledge for effective decision making.

Both theoretical and applied, the BI&A program blends courses in databases, data warehousing, data mining, social networking, and risk modeling. The program culminates in a practicum course that applies the concepts and techniques learned in prior courses to real-world problems with a business mentor from industry. Oral and written communications skills, analytical thinking, and ethical reasoning are also emphasized throughout the curriculum.
