availableat University HealthcareBerkeley
Medical Center offers longtime smokers
the opportunity to undergo a lung
screening that research shows can help
detect cancer earlier.
Low dose CT lung screenings for lung
cancer will be offered at a discounted rate
beginning in August. The first screening
clinic isscheduled for Saturday, August 10
from 8am until noon in the radiology
department at Berkeley Medical Center.
The exam is $99 and includes the CT
Screening with interpretation by a
radiologist. Another screening clinic is
scheduled for August 24.
Thescan takesonly afew minutesand no
medications are necessary, stated Selwyn
Persad, radiology manager. During the
exam, spiral CT scans create 3-D images
by rotating thescanner around thebody to
check for abnormalities in the lungs.
Patients are permitted to eat before and
after the exam. We are pleased to offer
this potentially life-saving service here in
theEastern Panhandle, Persad added.
A major study of heavy smokers, called the
National Lung Screening Trial (NLST),
compared lung CT scans and chest x-rays
and found that getting a lung CT scan
lowered the risk of dying of lung cancer.
The trial involved 50,000 current and
former heavy smokers people who
smoked the equivalent of a pack of
cigarettes a day for 30 years ages 55 to
74.
West Virginia has among the highest
smoking rates in the country, and the
Eastern Panhandle has among the highest
lung cancer and smoking rates in the
state, said Eric Bonnem, MD,
hematologist/oncologist with University
HealthcarePhysicians(UHP) and medical
director of the University Healthcare
Regional Cancer Program. Its important
for peopleto realizethat regardlessof how
long they have smoked, quitting still
provides immediate and measureable
health benefits, headded.
The CT lung screening is only open to
patients who meet certain criteria
current or former smoker, age 55 74,
smoking history of at last one pack a day
for 30 years, and no history of lung cancer.
Thescreening isadecision that should be
made in consultation with a physician.
Patientsmust obtain an order for thelung
screen from aprimary carephysician. Dr.
Bonnem will providean order for patients
without aprimary carephysician.
An appointment is required for the
discounted CT lung screening. The $99
fee may be paid by cash, check or credit
card. Insurancewill not bebilled. For an

MARTINSBURG James McDaniel, a
four-year nurse and manager with
Hospice of the Panhandle, has been
named the agencys first inpatient facility
director.
McDaniel, who holds a masters degree
in nursing, also currently teaches at
Shepherd University while he pursues his
doctorate degree. Before joining the
Hospicenursing team in 2009, McDaniel
worked at Berkeley Medical Center.
Over the past four years at Hospice,
McDaniel hasbeen anursing team leader,
assistant clinical director and interim
clinical director. A lifelong resident of
Berkeley County, McDaniel is excited to
takeon thisnew challenge.
The14-bed inpatient unit, set to open in
early 2014, will offer short-term stays for
about fiveto seven daysfor patientswhose
pain is unmanageable at home. The unit
will also offer respite care for patients
whosecaregiverswho areoverwhelmed by
the demands of caring for a loved one
with a life-limiting illness. Currently
under construction, thefacility sitson the
Berkeley-Jefferson County line, about a
mile from the VA Center. McDaniel will
oversee the opening of the unit, and will
be responsible for hiring staff, setting
policy and general operations.

James will serve as our first inpatient
facility director, said Hospice of the
Panhandle CEO Margaret Cogswell. He
is an extremely hard worker, is dedicated
to serving Hospice patients, and we are
very confident that hewill do asuperb job
leading theeffort to offer thisnew level of
care.

The historic town of
S h e p h e r d s t o w n s
downtown area from
10:00am-4:00pm both
days. It will include a
wide variety of activities
for dogs, their owners,
and dog lovers, as well as
activities that everybody
can enjoy. All activities
will be free and everyone
will be welcome.
Activities specifically
tailored for dogs and
owners will include a
blessing of the dogs; a
dog show; dog
competitions and games;
and exhibits and demonstrations by trainers, rescue organizations and others.
Activities for everyone will include a hot-dog eating contest, childrens activities
and music. Through the weekend, many restaurants will offer dog-friendly
sidewalk dining. In addition, many shops and restaurants will be offering
special dog-themed items for sale. Pools and misters will be set up so dogs can
cool down in the August heat.
The DogFest weekend is being sponsored by the Shepherdstown Visitors Center,
the Shepherdstown Business Association, and the Jefferson County Convention
and Visitors Bureau. Visitors Center will post a detailed schedule of events on
its website at www.shepherdstownvisitorscenter.com
