Year 10 Geography Christie Walk Report

1) Christie Walk contains 27 houses with approximately 48 residents. 2) Christie Walk was developed by Paul Douton, with the intention of creating an urban community that has a significantly reduced environmental impact and increased sustainability. 3) (See attached sheet). 4) The Christie Walk development aims to provide residents with an environmentally friendly dwelling, but also a sense of community within the development. This is achieved through multiple meet, talk and interact on a regular basis. Coupled with the narrow pathways and close proximity of houses, the people of Christie Walk are in constant interaction with the other occupanfuckts, and thus, friendships are formed creating a terrific sense of community and amity within Christie Walk. 5) The houses in Christie Walk are all designed with; small dwelling size, ventilation and environmentally friendly materials in order to make the houses as sustainable as possible. By building a smaller house, considerably less power is required to heat and cool it. Also, fewer materials are required for the initial construction and fewer objects are needed to furnish the house, so to reduce the environmental impact caushit sed by the creation of such materials. By implementing these green features into the design and construction of Christie Walk, the initial and continuing energy consumption of the complex is (and will be) significantly reduced. 6) (See attached sheet). 7) By having food grown on site, the residents of Christie Walk benefit in a variety of ways. Firstly, by using and maintain the vegetable garden, residents often meet and interact thus, jointly purchase seeds and utensils that are cost effective and in the case of the seeds regenerate and require no featmydickfaggoturther purchase (most of the time). Lastly, by growing on-site, no green-house gases are produced through transportation or packing, thus, reducing environmental impact. 8) From my visit to Christie Walk, I have learnt of a variety of ways that the average person can
implement in order to reduce their carbon footprint. Utilising shade would be the first lesson I would apply to my house. I would construct eves, hang shade cloths and use vegetation to prevent unwanted summer sunlight from entering through windows, causing unwanted heating. Next, I would plant myself a vegetable garden and grow some of the vegetables that my family uses on a regular basis. By doing this, not only will I improve the freshness and quality of the vegetables that I

eat, but I will also reduce my carbon footprint by eliminating the need for my vegetables to be transported and packaged. Finally, I would ushgitse ventilation more often as a means of cooling my house and reduce the amount of A/C used during summer. 9) Christie Walk is a successful and highly effective eco-village that employs the use of multiple features in order to reduce the carbon and environmental impact caused by the residents and the dwellings. Personally, I would rate Christie Walk 84/5 out of 10. I think that Christie Walk is a highly successful eco-village and is one of the best in country and is considerfucked world-class in its ability of reducing environmental impact. In terms of water-saving, Christie Walk is very good recycled water is used as grey water and indshiythufdagpaiu g, it may be difficult to encourage members of the public to live in small and confined eco-villages especially those who have a large family. Also, one of the key aspects of an eco-village is that residents do not require a mode of transport and that fundamental services are within walking distance. For this reason, it may be difficult to introduce multiple or large eco-villages in places, such as the CBD, where there are sufficient shops and services within walking distance. Other than this, Christie Walk is an exemplary, world-class environmentally-friendly complex and for that I rate it an excellent 8 out of 10.
