Change of Paradigm throughout the world ignites new and different Use Cases Main Motivations and Messages:
Nordic Market is deregulated and fully dynamic in pricing and tariffs. North America mainly uses CPP (Critical Peak Pricing) in conjunction with Demand Response (DR) and Demand Side Management to unload and protect the grid infrastructure from outages. Europe aims to increase efficiency, reduce CO2 and follow EU legislation. Europe prevents and detects fraud by measuring consumption instead of yearly/monthly estimations as typically meter installations are in-house. APAC can gain advantage by supplying energy to new customer segments and build-up of new state of the art smart grid infrastructure.

Monthly bundle rates (e.g. 150kWh/Month at 25 Euro) ToU discounts (100kWh off peak usage results in 5kWh free usage) Churn Prevention (3% discount for a limited time period) PIA (payment in advance) result in better tariff or discount Cross selling (purchasing Gas, Water + Electric from the same supplier)
Smart Meter seen as pre-requisite to offer 2 tiered tariffs Identification of energy loss and reduction thereof (some regions >20%) Achieve 20/20/20 goal set by EU legislation
Multi tiered Tariff depending on renewable energy generation Dynamic Tariff forecast, here: based on prognosis of renewable energy generation for the upcoming day Monthly Bill with automatic monthly payment / bank collection option

Smart meters store the tariff table locally and rate the events Separate tariff registers for collecting on peak / off peak consumption
Backend processes perform billing by aggregation of rated events (similar to manual meter reading)
27.03.2012
Page: 28
No-frills smart meters only deliver counter readings and time stamps Remote interval readings provide consumption profiles (every 15 mins) Meter events are rated centrally by a backend process
Impacts Moderate investments in smart meter infrastructure provide savings in meter reading process Moderate investments in backend rating and pre-billing provide competitive advantages by direct consumption and cost feedback to consumers Gain of flexibility for competitive tariffs and customer segmentation No complex provisioning process for tariffs in the meter

_ save 10% on the overall meter investments by central realization in backend, in a scenario of 1.0 million connections - save around 20 million USD without even mentioning the reduction in labor force
