may have been in the minority but I never looked forward to when my girls returned to school at the end of summer. Some parents dread the last day of school because it means that the kids are home for a couple of months. I, however, loved having the girls home for that time. It meant we could take day trips, hang out with friends and give us a break from the routine. Regardless of whether parents love having the kids home for the summer or if they enjoy when school starts, I don't know any parent who looks for-

ward to the struggles of getting kids prepared for the new school year, getting them up every morning or the battles that sometimes accompany homework. One aspect of summertime that kids love is that bedtime is usually a lot more lax. When I was a kid, there was always a Sunday morning (a couple of weeks before school started) that my parents spoke the dreaded sentence: Starting tonight, youre going to go to bed early so that you can get back in the habit of school. That was always the first sign that the paradise of summer was going to just end up being another

childhood memory. Whether that trick of my parents worked, they knew that getting their four kids to wake up on time for the first day of school might be as problematic as having snow on the first day of school. Parents can opt to cut the kids off cold turkey from the all-night playtime or they can transition their offspring by bumping up the bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night until the proper bedtime is achieved. Regardless of the method, their teachers will appreciate the supportive home atmosphere of getting children to take school seriously. Unless you have a student who loves everything about school, parents have to find ways to excite their children about school. When the kids are younger, that can sometimes mean taking them to buy a special lunchbox, binder or backpack. When my niece was in elementary school, we would go to her house to watch her fashion show with all the school clothes she had just purchased. If you have older students, school can often be viewed very differently than when they were younger. The stress level of older kids is something that can affect their schoolwork, desire to study or even their behavior in class. Giving them an activity to alleviate that stress is important. Marching band, sports, theater and extracurricular clubs are ways to keep the kids motivated about school, while giving them a safe outlet to relieve stress. Balance is something that every human needs to learn the value of to fulfill their obligations as well as make life more enjoyable. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Isn't that a proverb that many of us grew up with? Teachers will agree that they dont expect each of their students to go home and study continually until bedtime. Homework is important, but by giving your student extracurricular activities to pursue, you teach them the value of time management, social interaction and being part of a group. If there's not an activity that

SCHOOL: Values taught to young children are the same ones employers look for in new hires
continued from 3 your child wants to be involved in at school, then community participation is a wonderful way to teach them valuable lessons. Your student's education is a collaborative effort. Students always succeed the most when they have a supportive home environment. Parents may feel that theyve done their time in school and that whatever happens with the student and teacher is between them and that parents shouldnt help with homework. That couldnt be further from the truth. Parents shouldnt do their child's homework. However, teachers
it's because they forget to turn in their homework, behavioral issues in class or just struggling with a particular subject, dont hesitate to get in contact with the teacher. Your childs teacher wants them to succeed and is very willing to come up with a system that will allow the two of you to work to help your child achieve that success. Sometimes, all it takes is a daily agenda checklist or a weekly progress report to help bridge the communication gap that sometimes forms between home and the classroom. If you have an opportunity to be involved in your childs school or classroom, this is a great subliminal way to get your children to understand the importance of school. If a child sees that their parents view school importantly enough to be involved, the student will value their education. Providing a comfortable work area at home is also a more inviting way to have homework time become less of a chore. Regardless of your childrens ages, the habits they learn in school will last them the rest of their lives. Even preschoolaged children can understand the importance of being on time, respect in the classroom, always doing their best and treating others the way they would want to be treated. If you ask any employer, they will say these are attributes they value in all employees. As the saying goes, Old habits die hard. Why not get your child to practice good habits that will take them through life and what better place to begin than in their home and school?

Soap hobby turned into a successful business

BY DEBBIE BROWN

ith the recession and subsequent slow economy, many residents have turned to making their hobbies into a profitable career. However, a poor economic time is not always the catalyst for hobbyturned business. Jane Leebeck, Janes Rustic Ranch Soap owner, took the lead from her mother in making soaps. Approximately 40 years ago, her mother began creating soaps as a way of using the tallow (rendered-down beef fat) from their family cattle ranch. The now 150-acre ranch is still a working-

cattle ranch and has been in the family since 1869. Those early soaps sometimes burned the skin, Leebeck said. Thats because the lye added to the tallow is a very caustic substance and, if not measured properly, the resulting soap can burn the skin. Saponification (the process of making soap) is so much more than what it was in the pioneer days. In addition to colors, various oils and fragrances, the process is more precise. Leebeck has learned much since she made her first soaps 15 years ago, but most crucial learning was how important accurate measuring is. I don't remember my

mom measuring anything. Her way of testing whether or not the soap was good was to use the feather test, said the experienced soap maker. Leebeck explained that her mother knew when the soap was good if the feather came out intact, when a feather was inserted and then pulled out of the mixture. There would be too much lye if the feather was shriveled or had vanes missing. Although Leebecks mother had been making soaps for years, it wasnt until Leebeck and a friend fell across a soap store that she took up the hobby. She recalls walking out of the store with a book,

SOAP: Using various oils, Leebeck creates and sells approximately 35 different varieties of soap
continued from 5 some coconut oil and suggestions from the store owner to purchase shortening and the very cheapest olive oil she could buy. Fast forward to 2013 and her hobby has turned into a business. Leebeck proudly states that she makes approximately 35 varieties of soap. Her best seller changes all the time but her current top seller is the lemon grass and sage variety. Within the 35 varieties, Leebeck produces soaps made from various oils. Every oil brings different properties to the soap, Leebeck said. For instance, coconut oil offers "big fat lather, good cleaning and a hard bar of soap, while soaps made with olive oil are mild and moisturizing, and good for babies and people with allergies, according to Leebeck. An added benefit to Janes Rustic Ranch Soap is that all her soaps contain glycerin. This ingredient, not always found in commercial soaps, helps with moisturizing and lather. During the majority of Leebecks soap production, a cold process is

used. With a cold-process soap, the water used as a solvent must evaporate before the soap is usable. Leebeck uses a hot process when she does soap parties. She creates the soap in a Crockpot, and within 15 to 30 minutes, you have soup and every participant goes home with a soap bar. Leebeck explained that the hot process does not have to be measured and is much faster than the cold process where the water has to spend weeks evaporating. Additionally, during the cold process, the mixture is very caustic. In case of any contact with skin, a container of vinegar (used to counteract the caustic effects of the lye) is always kept nearby, even when cleaning the pots used to mix the soap. Even with the cold process, heat is involved. Because of the natural chemical reaction between the sodium hydroxide (lye) and water, the mixture can reach more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot and cold processes also offer a different look to the soap. The hot process lends a rougher appearance, while the cold process produces a smootherlooking soap. Mixing the soaps is just part of the process. Once the mixture is poured

Each bar of soap is put on a drying rack to complete the curing process. The process is complete when the soap no longer loses any weight. Leebeck weighs the soaps about once a week and keeps record of each bar's weight on a score card.
into the wooden trays, it's cured for a couple of weeks, cut and then placed on a drying rack. Once on the drying rack, the soap will continue to cure. Its curing stage is complete when the soap bars no longer lose water weight. After the curing phase, the soaps are bagged, labeled and ready to sell. Leebeck is selling her product at Farmers Markets, craft fairs and Harvest Festivals. To get specific dates of where Leebeck will be located or to find out more about having a soap party, visit her website at janesrusticranchsoap.com or call 645-7111.

not everyone's idea of relaxation, so if you're looking for a more active way to enjoy the lake, then take a ride on a peddle boat, a paddle board or even a kayak. The beaches of Lake Tahoe are dotted with rental businesses that can set you up with life jackets and the water sports equipment that suits your fancy. Visitors often say that Lake Tahoe is frigid all year round, but this time of year, the water is quite refreshing and can be a wonderful way to stay cool. Last month, I spent a week in Tahoe and it was the perfect way to clear my mind, enjoy the incredible scenery and appreciate this extraordinary area that is known all over the world. Wading ankle-deep in the water as I walked toward the sun setting behind the Sierras, witnessing a young family of ducks as they made their way to shore and reflecting on the wonderful

If you haven't had an opportunity for a vacation, take a day away from the computer, the office phones or just your hectic life and take some time to rejuvenate your weary soul.
day that I had just spent with my family gave me the opportunity to realize that I did not want to be anywhere else in the world. If getting to Lake Tahoe is not a possibility but you'd like to get out and enjoy the sunshine, fresh air and maybe even some activity, then there are several places in our area that are worth investigating. For instance, Sac State Aquatic Center is a 45-minute drive from Lincoln and is at the site of the Nimbus Dam. Rentals of kayaks, hydro bikes, paddle boards and a multitude of other possibilities will allow you to meander your way down this part of the American River. In the rental fee of the equipment, a life jacket is provided and must be worn at all times while on the river. I took my 15-year-old niece out for a kayaking trip last week and we had such a great time. However, it made me question how we tend to view activities. I asked her at what age getting outside and doing what we love (playing basketball, swimming, kayaking and so forth) quits being having fun and becomes exercise. A trip like this is also perfect for someone who can't take a full day off of

work (of if you have a teen with a part-time job) but still needs a break from the office or life's daily stresses. Since school is just around the corner, why not take an opportunity to bury a little history lesson in a day of fun? Placer County is rich in Gold Rush history and still offers a number of areas when one can pan for gold. The Gold Country Museum in Auburn makes the Gold Rush history come alive and offers lessons in gold panning. If you have a fourth-grader, California history will be part of the curriculum. There are lots of day trips that give the kids a first-hand experience to spark their enthusiasm for the coming school year and teach them a little about California history.Traveling to one of the 21 missions (some within just a couple hours of Lincoln), visiting Sutter's Fort, seeing the State Capitol, or even

a trip to the old schoolhouse in Old Sac. And then theres always the Lincoln Area Archives Museum off Fifth Street in Beermann Plaza that offers history of our own area. Young or old, student or business person, August means that summer is coming to a close. If you haven't had an opportunity for a vacation, take a day away from the computer, the office phones or just your hectic life and take some time to rejuvenate your weary soul. It wasn't until I was able to get away for a few days that I realized I can't function at my fullest if I'm running on all cylinders all the time. If taking a vacation isn't in the financial or time budget, spend an afternoon doing something you love. You'll be surprised at how good you'll feel and how it will breathe new life into your soul!

f youve lived in Lincoln for any length of time, then you know that this town is all about community. Moving here from San Jose 12 years ago, I quickly learned that this town rallies around its citizens, causes, the schools and anything else that will better the community. To be honest, its one of the reasons that makes me love this town so much and to brag to outsiders about how

goal is to bring everyone together in the community of Lincoln and kick off the school year. We are Lincoln-Building GREATNESS within, one student at a time! is in its second year and encourages students to give their very best effort in the classroom, playing field, school campus, band, theater and so forth. Berns said that he and the other program creators want our students/children to practice empathy and inclusion and stamp out bullying. We want to encourage our students/children to not practice indifference and be bystanders, we want them to step up and Do the Right Thing! The principal wants this to be a springboard from which the community, and especially students, can gain momentum and be elevated into success and greatness. The program was created last year because of the desire to combat bullying issues and help prevent suicides that seem to be an epidemic in todays society, according to Berns. Berns said, though, that this program cant teach GREATNESS without the communitys involvement. It takes teachers, staff, coaches, club advis-

ers, students, parents and community members. Berns wanted to publicly thank Dawn Wareham and Robin Peach for helping to manage, plan and oversee the Family Night Out the past two years. A program such as this is not something that comes inexpensively but the results are invaluable. Last years event helped to begin raising funds so that inspirational speakers Kevin Bracy and Jason Harper could deliver motivational messages to the students, faculty and community. For the 2013-2014 school year, the goal is to raise funds for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)/Character Education, with a special emphasis to fund positive extrinsic rewards/motivators at Lincoln High School. According to Berns, The funds will be used to purchase gift cards, pay for luncheons/breakfasts/parties and so forth as rewards for students making good choices and doing the right thing! For those who wonder if the program provided any benefits over the last year, Berns proudly stated, As for successes, we have seen improvements in all areas at Lincoln

High School. The CAHSEE passing rate increased last year, the number of seniors completing their A-G requirements increased last year, the number of students taking AP exams and classes increased last year, our athletics teams and student athletes were extremely successful making the section playoffs ... The programs success is because it is a school-wide message that comes from a unified front of teachers, counselors, faculty and parents, according to Berns. In the words of our high school principal, Students + parents + school = success. What a great formula for success!

Dog Parks 101

n the last 10 years or so, many communities across the country have embraced the concept of a community dog park. It is a relatively safe place for local folks to take their pets to get exercise and be able to interact with other dogs, enhancing socialization. As the concept has evolved, many dog parks have added double gating or airlocks to help prevent runaways and water features. There are now divided big dog and little dog areas, fecal (poop) bags and disposal containers, trees, chairs and so forth. Many avid pet owners meet regularly at the dog park for play sessions. When using dog parks, it is imperative to understand the following basic recommendations and rules. Most puppies under 6 months of age should not be in the dog park. Their socialization needs are better served in a relatively calm, controlled environment, such as a puppy class or play date with one or two other puppies of like size and temperament. He or she may

be ready for the dog park once fully vaccinated and trained to reliably come when called. Respect the big dog and little dog designations. Large dogs, when in groups can pack and attack a smaller dog, even if a big dog has not shown signs of it before. Some dogs have innate and intense prey drive tendencies that are dangerous and can mean the life or death of a smaller dog. Many a small dog pet owner can attest to this. Know your dog and

respect the size limitations. If you have a dog, large or small, with aggressive tendencies toward other dogs, do not bring them to the dog park. It will only result in injury to an unsuspecting pet. There are other forms of exercise that aggressive pets can benefit from without endangering others. Use a lease to get from your car to the play area. Many dog parks are near busy streets, have areas of potential rattlesnake exposure and are in adjoining neighborhoods. These local folks do not need their lawn used for elimination and your dog is less likely to harass others, if leashed. Unleash your pet in the airlock. Dogs on leashes can be aggressive to others, and while on leash, can be harassed by

others, causing the development of bad habits. Avoid this problem by unleashing in the airlock and then releasing the pet into their designated area. Pick up your poop. It is very common for most dogs to need to eliminate as soon as they get to the park. To reduce contamination and flies, pick up stool right away and deposit it in the appropriate receptacle. If one is not provided, pack it out with you when you leave. This rule seems pretty basic but there are always some owners who feel this does not apply to them. It does! You are your pets guardian. There are bullies at the dog park, just like at school. If your dog is constantly running, rather than alternating running, playing and chasing others, chances are that he/she is being harassed. Call your pet to you. Wait a minute or two. Let your pet go again. If he/she seeks out the other dog and is reciprocated, they are playing. Otherwise, the other dog is harassing yours. Avoid packs. If you arrive at the dog park and a group has packed up, go slow in releasing your pet into that situation. If you are nervous at all, come back another day. Constant boxing is a bad sign. Grisha Stewart at Ashima Dog Training reported rearing up on hind legs to engage other dogs may escalate into aggression and may teach your dog the same bad habit. If it begins to happen, call your dog to you. Many parks have been built on donated land that is wet or unusable during certain times of the year. As with any intensivelyused location, remember that there will be a higher incident of contagious diseases. Have all pets up to date on vaccinations, submit a stool sample for parasite check every six to 12 months, and contact your local veterinarian if your pet feels under the weather. Be sure to mention to your veterinarian that you frequent the dog park so that contagious disease consideration can be on their list. Some of these points and additional training tips are covered in: Visiting the Dog Park-Having Fun, Staying Safe, by Cheryl S. Smith.

While dog parks are a great way to socialize your pet, you must be watching for signs that your dog is being harrassed by the others. There are bullies at the dog parks, too.

Many women are attracted to the all-natural quality of mineral makeup. The best mineral makeup companies, such as jane iredale Mineral Cosmetics, uses ingredients that are composed of pharmaceutical grade antioxidants, natural preservatives, ant-inflammatory ingredients and are pulverized into a powder so you dont feel it or see the minerals on the skin. Consumers should look for makeup that does not contain chemicals, parabens, synthetic perfumes, dyes, talc, and petroleum (which our bodies cant absorb). Many of these irritants are a common cause of irritation and inflammation in the skin. You should look for mineral makeup that is recommended for daily use by the Skin Cancer Foundation for its UVA/UVB protection.

mineral cosmetics is the look they get from the makeup. Specifically, mineral makeup is soft and provides the skin with a natural glow. Rarely will women who use mineral makeup get a heavy, overdone look to their skin. Often, it appears they arent wearing makeup at all. Long-term benefits
Using mineral makeup can provide long-term benefits to the wearer not only for sun protection but for all-around health. Remember, our largest organ on our body is our skin. What we put on it absorbs into our system and can remain there for a lifetime. There are many benefits to using mineral makeup beyond looking pretty; its a lifetime commitment to health! Taking your supplements internally every day and nurturing your skin with minerals could be your key to optimal health. Article source: Skin Care Foundation/skincancer.org

Simplicity
Applying mineral and natural makeup is generally easier than applying other makeup. There is no line of demarcation to worry about and applying the makeup is as simple as applying the makeup to a brush and applying to the face. Many women like that they can mix a few shades to get the perfect shade for their skin. And if its summer, they can add a slightly darker makeup to the mix and get the right shade. In winter, they can keep it lighter, all without having to change makeup for the seasons.

Skin care
Mineral makeup doesnt clog pores or dry skin out; it can actually seal in your own moisture so your skin remains pH balanced all day and allow the skin to breath by the way they lay on the skin surface. Unlike traditional makeup, minerals are suitable for all skin types. A good mineral makeup line would have ingredients that
