Summer 2013

30 degrees and rising! At last we have a summer and, while it is glorious, it has its hazards. Please remember to drink enough, and not all at once. Try to keep some water with you at all times if possible; it will keep your energy up, and stop you getting fed-up with the heat. You also need to look after your back in the hot weather. Not as much gardening perhaps, but the temptation to get out and enjoy the sun means that you may be doing more than usual. Remember that the team we have can provide a range of treatments and advice, so call us on 01225 862140 or visit our website: www.dixon-health.co.uk to find out more. We have a couple of personnel changes that I need to tell you about: Firstly, my son Joshua has now finished his studies at Chiropractic College and is joining us as a fully qualified Chiropractor at the beginning of August. This makes me very proud as his father, and also thrilled to welcome him to the team; he is very motivated and excited. He will be following me for the first couple of weeks so that he can meet some of the patients, and then he will be running his own patient list in all three of the practices. The other change is that Sally Hobbs, who has been working in Devizes for 7 years, is starting her own practice in her hometown of Swindon. We wish her every success with her new venture, and Elizabeth James, who is already working in both Batheaston and Bradford on Avon, will take her place in Devizes. This will mean that there will be a female chiropractor in all three practices for those who have a preference to be seen by a woman, and it will also provide a nice balance across the group. I hope that now we can provide an even better service to you all. The College of Chiropractors has now received its Royal Charter, as I reported in November, and has now produced some Quality Care Standards which we are adhering to and may be of interest for those who want more detail. We are also very proud to have been awarded the Royal College of Chiropractors Patient Partnership Quality Mark for the sixth year running, and this is in recognition of the service that we provide to our patients. I would like to congratulate the whole team for this achievement, and we will continue to try to improve the service we offer. A final thought...Our lifestyles now mean that we spend a vast amount of our times sitting down living a rather sedentary lifestyle, our bodies however are designed for a lot of physical activity. It important therefore to EXERCISE! Exercise not only helps our cardiovascular system but it also helps our joints by keeping them mobile. Yoga is a total body workout which incorporates both cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility. We are now running Yoga Classes at our Batheaston Clinic starting Wednesday 3rd September from 9.30-10.30 am. There are limited spaces available so contact the clinic on the number below to book your space. The classes are payable by term (7 weeks). Here is what Pam has to say about her classes: This is a general class for beginners and improvers intended to gently but firmly stretch the body and mind into a place of harmony and stillness. A variety of different asanas (poses) can be worked with to specifically strengthen areas of weakness and create better health and well being, (some poses can be quite challenging so wont be suitable for those with very limited mobility.) The format of the class is usually a meditation at the beginning and end of each class then a range of different sequences of asanas gradually building up to deeper levels of practise. The aim is to do yoga with a sense of depth and also have some fun! Pam has been teaching yoga for over twenty five years she is also a counsellor and body therapist. For more details please go to my website at www.yogaandmassage.co.uk We are pleased to tell you that Lynne Rayner is also joining the team in Bradford on Avon to do Keep Fit Classes for Ladies Over 60 and these will begin on Monday 2nd September at 14:30. For more information, please contact Jane on 01225 862140 .

This issue features Erika Wiesenmueller-Potter, Counsellor...

Nothing in life is permanent but change. (L Boerne) I have been working as a Counsellor for individuals since 2001 in a wide range of settings, in Higher Education, in GP General Practice, for Employee Assistance Programmes and have run my Private Practice now for more than ten years since 2003. Prior to becoming a counsellor I taught for nearly 20 years in Secondary and in Higher Education in Germany and in the UK. I hold a first degree (1982), MA (1991), Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling (Dip HIC, 2004). I am professionally accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy since 2008. Counselling individuals is fascinating work as people bring their very personal world to sessions. I engage with my clients on the basis that a deeper understanding of their emotional self and how they relate to others and lifes challenges gives them a mu ch better sense of what in their life works well and why. Indeed, often more important is that they discover self-defeating behaviours and beliefs that hold them back. This kind of constructive exploration develops emotional resilience and helps people to construct a positive inner dialogue. Psychology has long held that one of the significant sources of personal success and wellbeing, if not the most, is the way we think and feel about ourselves. The sum of these thoughts profoundly influences our sense of self-worth and how we deal with life. The fields of Psychology and Talking Therapies, of which Counselling is one type, are changing rapidly based on neuroscience research that offers fascinating and profound new insights into our emotional behaviour and a better understanding of how and why we react to life the way we do. I follow this research with a keen interest and integrate the latest thinking into my work. Modern life presents all of us with many challenges and continuous change. People typically come for support in Counselling when they feel in a crisis following family or personal breakdown, bereavement, health or work-related difficulties or when they suffer from recurring personal problems. Unresolved personal issues and stress often result in emotional and social withdrawal and in physical symptoms like anxiety, panic, irritability, disordered eating, insomnia, excessive worrying, depression, obsessive behaviours, loss of confidence and general physical unwellness. I offer long-term or time-limited counselling as well as one-off consultations to adults, students and counselling students in training to address any of those issues.
