The growing technological world has impacted our generation in a tremendous way.

The digital world has now hit the next level of social interaction with the access and development of social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter to all population. Other than just the sole purpose of communication, we now find social life on these websites as important as our daily routine life. This has indeed transformed the face of the interacting social world along with the changing behaviour patterns of the young population. Though, these websites are very useful in terms of sharing information, keeping updates on all events which are happening around the world, meeting new people, sharing ideas, gaming and so on. It has also many demerits. As being a Facebook user for almost four years now, I chose this topic to learn more about the negative side of it whichI will be talking about with the support of few researches articles, statistics etc.

Online social networking has become extremely popular with adolescents and young adults. Research provides evidence that young people use online social networking to maintain already form ed friendships and build communities. So are social networking websites simply giving adolescents a new outlet for something they were traditionally focused on in this stage of their life or is the distance the Internet provides detrimental tothe development of young peoples face to face social skills.Online social networking and Internet communication is becoming wildly popular wi th adolescents and young adults. (Education Acedemics, n.d) In this period teens learn to form and maintain intimate friendships and other essential social skills. T hese skills become vital in young adulthood when peer groups become the primary resource for emoti onal support. (Education Acedemics, n.d) In contrast, early adolescents who reported more positive intimate friendships were more liable to pos sess a webpage. DeGroot et al. (2011) conducted an extensive study on young peoples feelings towards socially conn ecting online and selfdisclosure as predictors of communication on facebook as well as the level of in timacy in relationships. The researchers ask if onlinesocialconnection (OSC) has a positive relationshi p Online Social Networkings Effect on Adolescent Social Development with the frequency of faceto face communication with facebook friends and if communicating on facebook is positively correlated with personal interactions with facebook friends. After analysis, the results showed that OSC has a p ositive relationship with communication via facebook when onlineself-disclosure is low. (Education Acedemics, n.d)

Teens who communicated through social networks and selfdisclosed via Internet communication wer e more likely to have intimate relationships with their peers. Since the massive popularity of social ne tworking sites come about until the early 2000s, research in this field is obviously incredibly young an d there is still much to be done. (Education Acedemics, n.d) Internet communication is an outlet for both extroverted and introverted youths. Traditional social dev elopment does not seem to have been impacted since social networking patterns seems to follow the n orms in this area. Teens most often use social networking sites to connect with friends and build com munities, something they are also doing offline. Nevertheless, risks lie in communication with danger

ous strangers, lack of facetoface interaction, and the weakening of family ties.

The research explores the effect of social networking wbesites such as Facebook, Orkut and Myspace on the education of teenagers. As pointed out in the abstract, the research argues that these websites have a negative impact on the education of students. However, if used in the right way, with sound pedagogic principles and right supervision, they can be useful. The research also argues that social networking sites can have both positive and negative effects based on the kind of usage. (Sunitha Kuppuswam, 2010) The authors of the essay begin by explaining the changes in internet trends. Social networking is a relatively new phenomenon and has grasped the attention of a lot of teenagers. They then ask what it is that drive so many youngsters to spend time on these websites. A social network is defined as a set of people and the relationship between them. They help people build and maintain relationships online with a host of features. People use these features to share videos, images and ideas in order to maintain their relationships. (Sunitha Kuppuswam, 2010) The authors then ask if these sites only help maintain social activities or whether there could be any educational purpose that can be served by it Social networking sites help youngsters discover their identity by taking their friendship to a new level, and by extensive sharing of ideas and information about oneself. However, these sites can pose danger to a students privacy and health. The authors of the research suggest that schools and universities should look into it and advise their students on the matter. Nicola Cavalli, Elisabetta Ida Costa, Paolo Ferri, Andrea Mangiatordi, Marina Micheli, Andrea Pozzali, Francesca Scenini and Fabio Serenelli, 2008 and 2009, conducted a two year survey on the influence of Facebook among Italian undergraduate students. The data they collected in 2008 (N=1088) and 2009 (N=1123) allowed them to define profiles of media use based on indicators such as time spent online, consumption or creation of content, and familiarity with digital technologies as compared to analog media. 30 semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students were analysed. Quantitative data show that majority of students were not informed about the existence of web 2.0 services such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Slideshare, etc. and that only a very small percentage of them upload content online. This is in line with trends identified in others developed countries, such us the US (Lenhart, 2010). It was also observed that students disliked theonline"exhibitionism",content futility, superficial communications or relationships and matters of privacy management. It i was noticed that many of these complaints had led students to dis-engage with the social network. In particular, to set themselves against those bad reputation practices (such as over-self exposure and superficiality), students stated to prefer not participate too much in the social network. Therefore, in contradiction to the Web 2.0 philosophy, on Facebook students tend to limit their sharing or (public) communication activities. Thus, it was tentatively concluded that Facebook adoption did not seem to have had large consequences on the students' Internet use habits. Notwithstanding, it does have changed rituals of interpersonal communications and it has redefined other media or formats uses (such us cellphone and e-mail). (Cavalli, n.d)

Mr.Madhur Raj Jain, Ms.Palak Gupta and Ms.Palak Gupta conducted a study on the IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES IN THE CHANGING MINDSET OF YOUTH ON SOCIAL ISSUES. Social Networking sites provide a platform to discuss issues like violation of human rights, girls education, adverse effects of global warming, wrong deeds of political leaders, crime against women, corruption etc. as it is this media which majority mass rely on and extend warm support. One such burning issue that has been overlooked in todays scenario is the impact of social networking sites in the changing mind-set of the youth. The research was conducted on youths between age group of 18-30 years with a view to know the level of awareness on the social issues and how far social networking sites awakened the todays youth in expressing their views on current and burning issues like corruption, human rights, girl education etc. Study was conducted on 100 people mostly through email or sending link of questionnaire on various social sites. (Madhur Raj Jain, 2012) It was found that these social networking sites are acting as great medium for view mobilization. People are feeling free in sharing their thoughts on any issue and even youth is raising their voice against social acts like violation of Human Rights, corruption etc. These social networking sites are proving themselves a boon at least in bringing thoughts of people on these social issues. It was also

observed that from the information so obtained people were getting more aware about the social issues mainly from Facebook. But inspite of getting this knowledge people generally dont discuss them and if they do, they just sign off the sites after discussion and the issue just remains focused on web only. It was found that womens were spending less time on these sites mainly for 10-30 minutes yet they are more sensitive towards these social issues. Most of the people think that youth can play a positive role in changing our society which is represent in most of the responses to different queries. (Madhur Raj Jain, 2012)

Social networking, like brushing or bathing is a daily job. Be it on the mobile phone or your laptop/desktop, today's youth can't live without this major source of communication and information. Ruchi Sachdev, college of management studies, Kanpur, India has conducted a study in order to determine the boon and the bane of social networking sights. It all starts up with you setting up your profile picture, sharing your likes-dislikes, new ways of communication etc. It plays a major role in the reorganisation of internet geography. Like most studies, it has a good ands a bad side. The negative side includes excessive time consmption, Indian youth would waste a lot of time on only social networking sights. In considering the disadvantages, respondents identified a number of Indian youth admitting that they waste a lot of time on these sites.Concern about access to personal information by others, with almost half of the youth worried that non friends may Concern that information posted may be used against them.Social networking sights do not have a personified state here as they are static and constant. cultural differences also increase. judgement is made on the basis of a driver,So we should focus on the ethical use of these SNS so that it serves our society in a right way and the youth can play an important role because SNS is a boon and curse both for the Indian society .In one hand it provides away to connect our dear ones on the other side it gives a platform that become danger for Indian heritage and culture. This form of communication has entered into a technical and futuristic world made up of infinite possibilities. Therefore, Facebook, Myspace, IBIBO, are just another means to a never ending path. (Sachdev, n.d)

Conclusion

From past one decade, social media or the social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc have played a very important role in building up the lives of the youth. In the previous years, we can notice several notable reforms and revolutions taking place through social media as a platform. On the other side, it may be argued that social networking sites are just a waste of time because it is just seen as a medium to chat and keep in touch, with lack of productivity. The addiction of the social networking affects the hobbies such as sports, music, outdoors etc. The increasing popularity of cyber life has resulted in cyber crimes, due the ignorance of the users, posting personal details, photos in spite of to lack of privacy issues. Based on these researches we can also see that the youths instead of enjoying an event, they rather prefer updating and keeping in touch friends. None the less Social networking sites also keep the youth well informed and help them form an opinion on the current social, political or international issues.

There are both positive and negative e impacts of social networking websites among the youth. If utilized judiciously, these platforms can be used for something constructive which can be advantageous both personally as well as socially. On the other hand, the negative effects cannot be overlooked as well. Reference:
